- In today's video I talk about where I feel a lot of guitarists go wrong in their approach to getting better at improvising! If you have any questions or thoughts of your own on the matter I'd love to hear from you in the comments. Links to everything I do can be found below!

I love improvising. Most of the learning I do has become aimed at it. Mainly because I play by myself 99% of the time. And dude...that's a killer Strat!
Thank you! A while lotta mods on this one, the only thing that’s been untouched is the bridge!
Improvising for me is the most rewarding thing about learning to play any instrument. The “no set rules” part is what at first appealed the most. But of course it helps to have some basic understanding of keys and scales and what works better and how to get it going consistently. Practice and training wheels in the form of visualized backing track that hints at what chord is currently playing was a huge turning point for me, after which I realized that internalizing the melody of the backing track first is required to proceed. Mentally it is very difficult in the beginning to keep track of the music while thinking about what to play next, while playing something already. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement to not give up when it’s not going smoothly. It does get better with practice for sure!
Great comment, can relate. I'm at that point where if I concentrate on the chord changes and try and remember to do that everything else goes out the window. The layers of intuition and technique etc that all need to progress are coming along but there are moment of doubt when it sounds like I've never held a guitar before hahah. A well timed video and comment to keep me 'leaning into' the discomfort 😅😊
So glad you’re having break through a and starting to be more comfortable with all the information one must take in when improvising! Good luck continuing your journey!
Thanks! The chasing inversions/musicality part of the practice routine you gave me is where I'm getting the wins from. I do an occasional 'fill the canvas' as well while saying the position number (not the cage shape in my head (that's been hard, I'll admit).
