- The Authority On All Things R&B !
This week on The R&B Money Podcast, Tank and J Valentine sit down with massively influential R&B icon Johnny Gill for a wide-ranging, in-depth conversation about his decades-spanning music career. From getting his start singing gospel in DC-area church groups as a talented kid to landing a record deal and charting his first single while still a teenager, Johnny takes us through the origins of his meteoric rise in the industry.
He shares behind-the-scenes stories from his time dating a young Stacy Lattisaw, becoming an integral member of New Edition after Bobby Brown's departure, and scoring smash solo hits like "Rub You the Right Way" and "My, My, My." Johnny opens up about his experiences in the R&B supergroup LSG alongside Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat, naming artists like Jeffrey Osborne, Luther Vandross and Donny Hathaway as inspirations and friends who helped shape his approach to singing and storytelling.
While he's lived an extraordinary life in the spotlight, Johnny explains his philosophy of keeping his personal relationships private from the public, protecting his inner circle and maintaining balance. Now, over 40 years into his iconic career, the universally-admired vocalist joins the show to trace his evolution from gospel prodigy to a veritable living legend who helped define generations of R&B music. Enjoy an in-depth look at Johnny's incredible journey, Now on The R&B Money Podcast.

I done f’d around and found out about the real Johnny Gill😂 One of the best interviews EVERRRRR! Playa Playa🕺🏿
So true
Yesssssss this was definitely a great great interview
Right! Cause them other interviewers want to talk about drama the whole time. He was having fun on here
I laughed with them the whole time. This interview is epic.
@@tracetess 💜Yes! We need more interviews and people like Johnny🤣
This one was golden, Johnny Gill literally had an “I ain’t saying no names” story after every other question 😂
😂❤
I want to see a Ralph Tresvant episode now, that story needs to be told.
Who knew Johnny Gill was this funny 😂😂
Hanging around Eddie and Arsenio all them years had to rub off
And DC has a lot of funny guys! I’ve been around many
Right lol
FRFR. 👍🏽
We all knew!😍
Two of my favorite things about this podcast is Tank being fully committed to Stevie being able to see and whenever Tyrese randomly catches a stray outta nowhere! I be dying! 😂
Lmfao. And IS 😂😂😂😂
HILARIOUS 😂 😂
@lulunatural89 You never know when it's coming, but you know it's coming and that's the fun part. I love these guys!
I was waiting for he and J to say Ty Reeeeeeese 😆😆
@@DesiLu4Life I can hear this comment 😆
I just love seeing that black man laugh and smile from the heart especially hearing he lost his mom. Another legendary episode. Thank you Tank and J !
I lost it when Tank said “you hear that Tyrese” SCREAMING 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ikr 🤣🤣🤣
I haven’t stopped laughing I never knew Johnny was this funny, crazy and cool! 😂😂😂
Sure was, I was laughing the whole time.😂😂
I mean had me cracking up!!!!😂😂😂😂
He’s a Gemini 💓
@@rhondarosoboro7874 me too😂😂😂😂 That’s probably why I was laughing too
Hanging around Eddie Murphy he became funny
We need a Teddy Riley episode and a Jam & Lewis episode. I know I'm asking for a lot 😂 #Legends
Babyface one too
@@TheReal_E.IRIZARRYbabyface been done
I’d love the Jimmy and Lewis episode. I could do without a Teddy episode I’ve seen some of his interviews before and they were just dull
Trust and believe it’s coming
We need these stories 😂makes us appreciate their music on another level
GREAT INTERVIEW: So i started playing guitar for Levert 1985ish, met Johnny after a show we did in DC, I remember him driving that Cresida (silver i think), he complimented my playing, didn't know he played guitar at that time. years later, 11-10-06 Gerald passed & Johnny did a show filling for G's spot opening up for the Ojays, Like in the interview looking out for folks in need, he added some of Gerald's band/singers to that & future show's over the next couple of years. he's been a blessing to many. I currently still do 3/4 fill in shows a year with him (some with Ralph on the show was well & he performs the hell out of 'boys to men' still). Great dude, Great job gentlemen.
❤
OHHHHHHH COOL!!!!! SO U ACCOMPANY THEM WHEN THEY DO THEIR CASINO SHOWS?!!!! SOOO MUCH GOD-GIVEN TALENT…AND THEY SEEM SOOO HUMBLE!!!
Wow! You're the guitarist who played during the recording of the Levert song "Me N You" from the For Real Tho album back in 93
JG is a hoot…I just love how he cracks his self up…pure gold 😂😂😂
My exact thoughts!!!! Johnny is a wild man 🤣🤣🤣🤣 didn’t see it coming but I loved every minute of this episode and laughed just as hard 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They way he appreciated his mom,,losing a parent is hard, grief is a monster..he is a beautiful human, a legend.
Definitely. I lost my mother first than years later I lost my father. I miss them and will always love them dearly
😭
Facts ❤ 💯 %
He laughs like Tommy from Martin 😂 I love it!!
You shole right 😂😂😂😂
Johnny has a contagious magnetic energy. I can see why everyone is his friend in the industry.
He is entertaining! 😂
You can tell Johnny was an old pimp..all them old cats clap their knees together when they laugh. 😂 😂😂😂😂 This was awesome! So good to know a different side of him and learn things we never knew. He’s definitely part of all of our teen years into adulthood. The music is timeless!
They shole do! Lol😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hearing how Johnny joined the group without conflict was refreshing. He played his position and it never took anything away from his light. Reminds me of how Tank moves. He’ll do whatever and all it does is make his light shine brighter.
Johnny’s episode was an instant classic. Nothing more to say! Thank you @R&B Money Podcast. See you next week 💸🫶🏾
I loved this episode. And me some Johnny Gill. I'm watching Sunday at @5:30 pm Eastern time.
Instant!💯🤎
Yes!!! The balance of Ralph and Johnny on Can you stand the Rain was so perfect and will go down in history and was a genius move, love NE- Fan for life!!!! 🥰😍🤩
I love how J keeps the interview on track .....
He tries but sometimes he gets sucked in and Tank gets it back .... Well, near the track🤣
@@BloodbrotherAshyes because Tank is persistent with his foolishness. 😂😂😂 I love it here. They’re a great duo.
I can’t wait to see J. Valentines story now I’m so looking forward to it🙌🏾❤️
@@Brwnsuga1215 did you see "The Valentine" story?? That had me laughing and in tears... It's my favorite
@@BloodbrotherAsh yes I had to keep doing a double take J. Valentine and his brother looks so much alike but his life story needs to be made into a movie especially when talking about their childhood life and his father..🤣🙌🏾❤️
We've never seen this side of Johnny Gill & we love it!! Thank y'all for this. Now everytime I see Johnny I'm gonna say he's a crooner & a pimp🥰🤣
Hilarious
Jean jumpsuit and no shirt is so R&B. Shout out to Mr My My My!!! 😂😂💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
This was a feel good episode.
It’s like an uncle taking to his nephews. The admiration ,
The laughter And love
For music .
I am now convinced that Johnny Gill was the inspiration for Pinky from Next Friday and y’all can’t tell me otherwise😆
😂😂 you ain't lyin!! I didn't know he was so funny.
Yay!! I felt so LOST yesterday. I wasn’t balanced not getting my dose of RnB money. Lol
ME TOO!!! THATS CRAZY!
I did too!!!! I was like what happened to my show
Facts… dust in the wind smh
Okay, because I thought I was tripping.
Same here . Since i watched all the previous episodes, i had to look for J and Tank’s interviews at the breakfast club .
Johnny was feeling real good during this interview! 😂😂😅 “why, why, why…” Hilarious!
As soon as Johnny mentioned Stevie, I was like 'oh Lawd here Tank go' 😂😂😂😂😂 great episode!
I was an assistant at Johnny’s old distributor, and when I tell you he was my favorite artist to visit us! So personable and hilarious all the time to everyone, not just the execs. And although we didn’t distro NE, the rest of the guys would always join him coming to the office just in support of him. I love their brotherhood
Not all of us like some crack fiends waitin' IMPATIENTLY for this ep! Tank & J had us losin' it!😂
This!!
Me too
Ikr!! I thought it was taken down due to some legalities cause they posted stories of the clips but didn’t post the video.
They are some fools omg 😂😂😂😂😂
Jay and Tank is crazy as hell...."I opened, he didnt open" ... " He warmed up my crowd .... Tank this is what you 've been doing". They are too funny
LALAH is a beast! She harmonizes with herself! They need to have her on here.
“I’m Still Waiting” from the New Jack City Soundtrack is my favorite Johnny Gill song. His vocal is timeless!
One of my absolute favorite songs ever. 🙌🏾
YESSSSSS!!!!😍😍😍
Yes🔥🔥🔥
I still play that song to death on repeat! I know every riff, ad-lib, growl, etc.😂
Yessss I love that song a lot.
Johnny a fool "whatcha need" 😂😂😂
J Valentine wearing that shirt and he asks questions that delve into the guests’ history. Johnny Gill speaking the truth about respect, life, and death. Tank has a vivid memory of music moments. It’s the laughter for me😂😂😂! Those Brothers are wrapped and sealed in that R&B Life!
Can you stand the rain is a timeless, masterpiece
That's the key thing: respecting each other and allowing each other to be heard, not dismissive. Great nuggets!
Who knew Johnny was a mediator? That Rev card turned out to be useful 😆❤️
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE BOBBY BROWN ON HERE! 🔥🔥🔥
Girl I would pass out! Lol
They laughin from they bellies 😂😂😂😂😂 love it
Who knew that Mr. Gill was a pimp. 😂 The entire episode was absolutely a treat. 💘 ya'll for keeping R & B alive.
Please get Stevie Wonder on the show! 😍😍😍
This was an excellent episode!! I'm a faithful watcher and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I got to see the real Johnny Gill without paying the $200 for the meet and greet after the concert. Thank you for fulfilling a dream of mine.
🤣😂
Perfect combination with Johnny n Stacey Lattisaw is still one of my favorite duets. Luv this interview🤎👌🏾🫶🏾
Johnny definitely will be down to earth at the cookout. His energy is amazing ❤
Where do
We go from here is my favorite by them
I felt when Johnny talked about his mother I just lost my mother in August this year to cancer, she fought for four long years, her body gave up before she did, but it was hard watching her decline, especially when I had to leave her to get back to my family which she wanted because I lived hundreds of miles away and I have two brothers and a sister with her, but it's one of the hardest lost I've ever experienced 😢 R.I.P to his mother.
Condolences 🙏. The 17th this month will be 8 years since my Mother transitioned. Johnny honored his Mother well through the pain you never get over. Just a little easier with a Lot of time.
I know how you feel lost my mom in 04 may your mom rip
When I lost my mom it felt as if a literal hole had been ripped through my heart ❤️. I left for work our last conversation she reassured me she was okay. I arrived home that morning about 3:00 a.m. from work and she wad gone. My solace came in my knowledge that she had a relationship with God. My mother was fortunate throughout her battle with cancer (lung) to look at her you would have never known she had cancer. Prior to that diagnosis she lost part of a foot to melanoma. Not once did she ever complain, cry or throw up her hands in despair. In my moments of weakness with life I’m reminded of her strength. ❤❤❤❤❤ she is with me .
Damn I love Johnny. I have never laughed so much. Please bring Johnny back. Luuuuuuuuv you Johnny.
For Johnny gill, to hate boys to men is mind blowing! That’s my favourite song of heartbreak album! Happy 35 anniversary to that masterpiece!
Did you watch the whole thing cause he definitely gave love to that experience
@@n.desiree1300 and did ma’am.
One more thing, please, please, please, you two have to have the O'Jays on here!
Johnny seems like a cool guy. I know his brother, and he's a stand-up guy, down to Earth, never made a big deal about Johnny being his brother. Their mother clearly raised them well.
Johnny had J. At a loss for words on that “I ain’t saying no names” part…. “Why, why, why??” 😂😂
I'm so glad they brought up the Boomerang soundtrack!! My absolute favorite song by Johnny Gill is "There U go" Within the first ten seconds of that song you on grown folk time!! ❤❤ Absolutely loved this episode! Johnny Gill is nothing short of a true Legend!!
I forgot about that cut. I was listening yesterday to I'm Still Waiting from the New Jack City Soundtrack.
Another great interview, Johnny's personality, is definitely different from his on-stage persona and image... it was nice to see "him."
Couldn't agree more!
@@RnBMoneyPodcast I am looking forward to the next episode! Keep up the great work! 😊
Hella lol 😹❤️
Y’all had me searching high and low for this interview yesterday
My Saturday was completely thrown off. This podcast got me in a chokehold. Don't do this again ya'll ., my poor heart. I'm so glad that you are back. 😍
OK that part
Right!
Everytime this podcast was not found the poor heart was not still. As JG's🎵
I didnt think anyone on earth appreciated the conglomeration (yes its a word today😂) of Johnny and Ralph on "Can You Stand the Rain"
🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
Tank impersonating Keith Sweat is hilarious🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes I was going through withdrawals. I am glad it's back in the original studio ❤
Im a mail carrier and EVERY SAT THIS #1 podcast gets me through the rt ...and i was lost yesterday lol .......Lets go happy to see the GOAT Johnny FYI MY MONMA LOVE YOU JOHNN😂
Air Willie Nelson’s completely took me out. I’m wheezing 😂😂😂
You can that this is one of the BEST interviews Johnny Gill has had in a LONG time . He is truly himself. His laughter, body language and energy is on 💯 for real for real!
Johnny came OUT THE GATE with the tea!
Tank’s description of the first time Johnny Drop Rub You The Right Way was hella on point😂😂 Big Salute Uncle Gill😎👊🏾
5:08 Wow Tyler was so right. It’s took me 10 years & I’m still fighting it daily. It turned my entire life upside down. Having to take care of her while she was declining from breast cancer so young it took my breath away. I can’t explain the hurt but I now understand how you can die from grieving. ❤
Boys 2 Men will always be my favorite song! I always thought as a kid that the song was called growing pains and was for all of us but no, it for boys…to men 🤣 While I want us ladies to have an anthem, this song is still my favorite coming of age song ☺️ I be just singing my little girlish heart out 😆 Whenever I’m feeling down like adulthood is the ghetto (cause it is😆) I play that song (which means I play it regularly 😆) I LOVE that song! Johnny and Ralph are a special combination. Johnny looks amazing and like everyone said man, it warms my heart to see grown men laughing and smiling like this. R&B money is bringing back that sense of timeless when it comes music and I am sooo here for it! Love this podcast!
Keith Sweat R and B money interview would be a great interview if possible
Yo I had to pause the video to listen to “can you stand the rain “ like I don’t listen to it everyday lol 😂
I had to do the same thing😅😂
We all need Johnny to speak too and bring back the group Troop
This has to be the purest, most transparent episode….
Johnny Gill, Thank you for showing us that celebrities have normal lives too.
Why is Tank reminding me of Marvin Gaye so much right now! ❤️🔥 #nostalgic
Hearing Johnny Gill's laugh here has after 30+ years, revealed to me that he was the one laughing at Michael Bivens singing 😂😂
Real NE fans know what I'm talking about 😊
Hit it Mike....Doon Doon Doon diddie doody doooo lol
Always knew! Great throwback!
Skit # 2 lol
OMG does Johnny Gill have the best laugh in R&B?!?! He’s SOOOOOO SILLY it’s SUPER endearing!
God bless your mother, Johnny Gill. My mom passed away in 2018, and I realized she is at peace with my sisters and father and somehow I am at peace with that as well although I am sad😢. But God has a lot of plans for us.
Great interview. R & B Money killed it again!! Johnny Gill is a legend. Love how humble he is. He deserves all the flowers he has been given!
We need Ralph on the pod!
Wow 😮 Tank looking Sharp as always !!
Johhny Gill’s voice is sensational ❤❤❤ he’s been my favorite since 1990 “rub you the right way” 👌🏾 🖤
Just got the opportunity to tune into Johnny Gill's episode of RNB Money and I was so thoroughly pleased. Johnny is a one of kind, warm, honorable, charasmatic, loving, humble, and funny as hell gentlemen and entertainer. He was cutting up fr!!!😂😂😂😂 Pimpin Johnny!
Wonderful episode.💯🙏🏾🔥💪🏾
I don't know if he will tell it here, but I loved the story about the song, Boys To Men. He said he hated it, and he was going to show them by tearing the song up. He damned sure did that. He sang the hell out of that song!
I was sure looking for this yesterday. Today is even better. Church service is over. Grocery shopping done. Lunch will be done shortly.
Johnny laughs like Big Red from The Five Heartbeats! 😂
That's why we know he was a real pimp😂😂
People just want to be heard.....#wisdom, #Johnny Gill is the glue to that truly brought New Edition from Boyz II Men. Love it!!!! Great Interview.❣
This by far might be one of the funniest episodes!!!!!
Oh Jonny was comfortable comfortable in this one lol I never saw him so laxed !
Johnny Gill is definitely one of the R&B OG’s! He’s a whole clown with his jokes 😂😂😂😂
OMG, when Tank said "You hear that Tyrese?". I let out the biggest laugh. Sir, dont get me fired.
No way in my mind did I think this interview was going in this direction 😂😂😂 I said Oh my God all the way thru this interview WOW! And I love Johnny!
Thanks for inviting Johnny Gill. I debated with my assistant about the best singer in LSG. I played Door -#1 and once Johnny started to ad-lib it was over. So powerful love Johnny Gill.
The Velvet Teddy Bear Gerald Levert ❤
I’ll rub you the right way..Make you say my, my, my, mymymymy…
@@shannonpatrice8358Yeah, it’s always gonna be Gerald for me. That man was just…….❤
Johnny is nice, but Uncle G was that dude!!
Yeah JG but ummm Gerald tho❤
Johnny We Care how you’re doing! Don’t ever think that there aren’t people out here who care how you’re doing- There are genuine people out here who love you and care how you’re doing! I care and I pray that you’re doing well. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your Mommy! God Bless You and your entire family!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾😘😘😘🤎🤎🤎🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
😂 I’m screaming! Tank acting like he don’t know how Johnny Gill got in New Edition when Tank was in the damn New Edition movie 😂
Great interview. Every once in a while can we get a top 5 “ain’t saying no names “? Johnny got some stories to tell 😂😂😂😂😂 Tank and J are masterful at this. Absolutely love it ❤ R&B Money
He said I'm so excited, tomorrow I'm going to have curly hair...lol
Listen... Johnny needed this interview as much as we did ❤ Great interview!!!
Am I the only one who stopped the video to listen to the song each time a song was brought up???
If I'm not mistaken Stevie Wonder has been the most mentioned artist in guest top 5 r&b singers. and its not a surprise. Great show with the legend. I watched the VLAD TV interview but its nothing like listening to an R&B artist on the home podcast R&B MONEY🔥🔥🔥
And Brandy
I agree! It appears that Johnny was able to be himself because he’s among other R&B artists that can relate. This episode was beyond hilarious and worth watching.
Marvin Gaye, MJ, Brandy, Stevie I feel like has been in these top 5
Stevie is the king of R&B, period!
“I’m a Crooner and a Pimp” T-shirt asap!!
I had NO IDEA that Johnny Gill was that funny, that "slick", that giving and that humble ALONG with his INCREDIBLE talent!!! So much love and respect for Johnny. Please keep them coming, Tank and Jay. Love you guys!!!
Ok I think this will be my last comment but that Johnny Gill album was EVERYTHANG! Lady Dujour! MyMyMy! Fair Weather! Rub you the right way! TIMELESS and BOOMERANG SOUNDTRACK “THERE YOU GO”! Johnny Gill is the truth!
Whew Lady Dujour 🔥 1:43:08
I’ve never seen Johnny this candid, it was great
Yeeeeeeessss 🙌🏾
One my fav my him
This was so amazing. Johnny's laugh is everything. Johnny is so funny.
I love that he’s tickled by his own jokes. 😂
Giving My All To (Johnny) You...❤❤
Johnnie is arguably the best male vocalist alive.
I seen New Edition in concert last year, and let me tell you Johnny Gill went off on stage! Ateeeeee ❤ love J Gill
