- In this photography tip we're going to help you keep your camera up to date. Your camera has lots of little tiny digital elves and pixies inside called Firmware which it needs to make it work. Every now and then camera manufacturers update their camera firmware and all you have to do is update your camera's firmware to have the best your digital SLR can offer.
It's pretty simple to do (even I can update my digital SLR firmware) and it's certainly worth checking to make sure you have the latest update in order to keep your camera working well and your photos looking their best.
To update your firmware you'll need an internet connection, a couple of memory cards and/or a USB to connect your camera to the computer.

You are brave soul, updating your firmware for the first time and filming yourself doing it right away ;-)
Thanks Mike,Not been that nervous since my driving test 30 yrs ago.Now got a nice updated Canon 50D.
Thank you soooooooooooo much! I've always been wanting to upgrade my firmware but too scared to do it cause I figured, if it works, why try to fix it? But seeing a pro-photographer like you, being 'human' and actually having fears in doing the same too makes a hobbyist like me feel consoled that it's alright and fun to try and risk stuff as I learn more and more about my passion. Thanks again!
wish you get well soon Mike.

Excellent Mike! You explained this very well. I had no problems following your instructions.
Thanx for your vid! Yes, that´s what I´ve expierienced with myself too: Firmware-Updates do have a psychological side to them also! A new up-to-date Firmware adds something new and fresh to a camera you´ve already been using for a while! :-)
Thanks - I had to film because once it's done it's done. I did forget to film the back of the right camera though as you probably noticed. DOH!
Thank you - I'm on the mend
I have a Pentax K-r that I never updated cause it scares me too lol But just bought the Pentax K-5 and will definitely update it when it comes in. And even though you are using a Nikon, it still has put my mind to ease with the whole process and how easy it actually is haha
First! Thanks for the video Mike and Lorna (I assume). This is a great tip as the cameras sometimes have software bugs and they are fixed in the new firmware updates :)
good idea. thanks..
My Pleasure :-) delighted it helped....
how did you know i needed to put my glasses on? lol, great video thank you!
thanks
Thanks Tom no worries - I'd never have known that :-)
No it didn't change what was available in the menu. It did improve the in camera processing a bit and i think the colours captured in RAW were a bit more vibrant.
cheers mike !
Thanks - I didn't know that. I'll still keep it on there though just in case.... :-)
Thank you :-)
Perfect!!!

Hi Mike just purchased a Canon SX50HS only to find on the Canon Website i have to return it due to a fault on the viewfinder , i am not pleased as i was looking forward to your tutorials which are excellent btw , now i have to take the camera back to have this fault fixed please advise your followers if they are thinking of buying this otherwise excellent camera .
Groovy :-)
Lots of digital elves and pixies on my camera?! I always suspected that!
Pleasure :-)
No - but I don't often do it.
So did your firmware upgrade give you anything useful or snazzy? I've yet to even think about doing it on my D90 (which is 2nd hand so maybe has had an upgrade).
Hi hope u don't mind me answering your question. I also have a 600d and on canon.co.uk site only update is Firm 1.0.2 and information states. Only change AF does not function and no shutter release on live view, with speed light 270ex, So I have just left mine as it was. Hope this help's. Mike sorry for Answering your Question , hope u don't mind :-) Tom
Have you ever problem with upgrading? Like that upgrade fail and camera became stuck and unusable?
If you shoot Raw then the Adobe RGB setting is irrelevant.
OOOO - that one's way too controversial and scary for me. ;-)
HELP! I updated my canon firmware and now when i press the AF Point button nothing happens - before all worked well, pressed AF button, all points showed up in viewfinder and I could change positions etc. now viewfinder goes blank. Looked in manual (that was fun) and reset all menus still no joy ????? Can you go back to old firmware? Any other ideas?
Hi Eden - Yikes! So long as the camera wasn't turned off during the update it should all be fine. Were you using the rear af button before or the shutter button to focus/ If it was the rear one you may need to re-set it in the af menu. I don't know why it is stuck in manual mode though. I don't think you can go back to old firmware. I'd try re downloading the new firmware from the manufacturers website and doing it again.

panic over - all day with manual and on forums eventually someone told me - reset factory settings three times in row (once didn't work) and hey preso all back - now for a beer and set it all up how I like it - happy days.
Phew Eden Burberry :-)
