Gremlins 2:The New Batch, Alternate Home Video Sequence. This is the VHS counterpart to the Hulk Hogan movie theater sequence which appears in the film version.
The movie version had Hulk Hogan, the VHS version had John Wayne, and the novelization had the Brain Gremlin lock the author out of his study and hijack the typewriter for a bit, only to flee when the author started breaking down the door with a fire ax.
A great movie, and the fact they literally made this entire sequence just for VHS shows how much work they put into the film. Even after the theatrical version was done.
apparently the reason current home versions use the Theater segment is because confused buyers of the VHS thought the VHS/Beta/Laserdisc was defective because it had this insted of the broken projector version.
@@JeffreyPiattHaha that’s hilarious if true! How anyone could convince themselves that this whole new sequence was in fact “defective” and not just a new insert is beyond me, but it’s a funny thought.
I remember when i saw it in the movie theater everybody thought the movie really was messed up and you heard a lot of people reacting till they saw the gremlin on the screen
I never saw this in the thatres. My mom thought it would be violent like its predecessor, but my Grandma got it on VHS for my that Christmas. I had never seen the Hulk version until somewhere around 2010. This version is still my favorite.
see it in Theater but when it came out in VHS WTF this was not what I see in a movie theater & Hulk was my wrestle hero form that time & hear they third version but never see it till now
I can see that with a buffering spinning circle at the same spot and words that say wifi signal lost or something like that. Or on a Blu ray just freeze the picture to make it look like it skipped
Never in any of the cable airings I've seen - they used the Hulk Hogan scene. The novelization had another variant - the Tony Randall-voiced gremlin crashes into the writer's home, subdues him and starts typing away. It was kind of funny when I was 11, although it's definitely a better visual gag.
I like Hulk Hogan and all, but I was upset when they did not include this sequence in the dvd release! Love this one better than the theatrical scene with Hulk Hogan, since it indeed makes it look as though Gremlins have taken over your home viewing experience, like its supposed to, that is, if youre watching this movie at home. Btw, the first time I saw this scene on vhs, I thought something was really wrong with our vcr, lol.
Actually it is on the DVD. Its kind of hidden somewhere on either the main or special features menu. I think Andrew Rae is referring to what I'm talking about.
I know, I looked for it myself, after the guy before you replied said it. So glad it was there, but it would have been nice, for it to be the other way around, since its a home viewing edition, and the tv interference by the gremlins, makes more sense.
I saw this movie in the theater upon release in 1990....I saw it twice actually and one of those times, they did include the part with the gremlins 'hijacking' the film, with them using hands and such to make birds etc...i recall one man stood up from the audience, turned around and yelled at the projection booth as he thought, as others, that someone in the booth had actually done that to the film reel LOL....it was pretty funny. But it lasted for only that part as i remember...the John Wayne sequence was not included in the theater releases I saw back then.
If there was an exclusive scene for digital release, there'd probably be platform specific glitches, like one for Amazon and one for CZcams movies, and one for Netflix
I know this movie was released in 1990, but I can't stop imagining a third alternative version of this scene, when distributed on a streaming service... LOL.
Thanks for posting this up - this was on a version of the film I taped off the television a long time ago, but they used the theatrical version when I bought the film proper... haven't seen this bit for years
Never saw this before! I prefer this to the Hulk Hogan scene in the theatrical version. Hulk Hogan was so over-the-top it just took me out of the movie. This one works better because it parodies other movies, rather than just have a wrestler pretending he's in the movie theater with you. And this one has more gremlin footage that seems to work pretty well and doesn't have them turning into lightning bolts.
That's the whole theme of gremlins brainlet The theme was to be as over the top as possible And Cram in so many references to people, sports, and movies And to break the 4th wall too making it seem like the gremlins are causing mischief in our world too
I prefer the theatrical one better then this but it is still good But in all honesty I think the book version is the one that got the most laughs from me
It feels like the twilight zone: watching gremlins simulate hijacking your tape and changing channels through the VHS which you remember as a kid but now your seeing that on a HD tv through your Blu ray. Wrap your head around that one lol
Joe Dante (director of both Gremlins movies) directed a segment of the infamous Twilight Zone movie in 1983. It was a remake of the classic episode It's A Good Life (the one with the kid with powers)
Abigsmurf on Hot UK Deals just reminded me about this scene... not seen it since I was probably a teenager and I’m 39 now! Definitely better that the Hulk Hogan version. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Then again, after I've thought about it, the joke with the gremlins doing shadow puppets on the screen works better as a theatrical gag. Still, this was the funniest scene of the movie.
if you have the dvd you have to look around to find this version. go to special features, then down to trailer, then go over to highlight the gremlins claw and hit enter.
While watching Gremlins 2 on HBO MAX tonight, I was pleasantly surprised to see the theatrical version of this scene (with Hulk Hogan) than this. It brought me back when I watched it in the theaters as a little kid.
Love this, not seen it since I had the vhs. All the versions of the film I've seen in the last 20 years only had the Hulk Hogan interlude. The one here is far funnier, with the cow and the really bad John Wayne voiceover.
Imagine if all home video releases of Gremlins 2 had a special scene depending on the media format you where veiwing it? The DVD/Blu-ray release would have it stutter and skip around making it seem as though the disk is scratched until you hear some Gremlins cackling until one of them says "But I wanna' sssee how it endsss!", the others moan and sigh before continuing the film and that one Gremlin goes "Yay!"
Now let's make version of this for streaming. It could first be buffering, then be different versions depending on the device you're watching on. Like your smartphone starting up Angry birds or calling your mother. Or the web browser going to Ebay and buy something expensive. Or your TV changing inputs or channels.
For a long time the only version of this movie I was familiar with was the VHS version (this movie first came out when I was 2 so I never saw it in theaters) so I wasn't even aware there was an alternate scene where Hulk Hogan yells at the gremlins until much later on in life
+Nolan Massey I had that cartoon on VHS, loved it, expecially when Bug's is about to hit the bomb with the sledgehammer and suddenly realises what he's about to do.

This was the only version I knew of before buying the DVD as my dad had the VHS. I was surprised when I watched the DVD and saw the alternative (to me) Hulk Hogan scene lol
I think they just threw logic/canon out the window in 2 because wtf is up with the bat gremlin turning into a gargoyle? It was broad daylight lol didn't even stop to think about that until I read this comment haha
Shouldn't the Gremlins melt when they met John Wayne considering that they were outside in direct sunlight? That said i don't mind this scene considering that it shows them interacting with John Wayne himself. Add to the fact that it ends with them getting into a shoot-out with Wayne (only for them to get shot by him) makes this scene even more funny and hilarious.
the projector gag would need to be updated for a reissue in theaters since digital projectors lack film it would likely look like a merger of this and the original
I remember seeing gremlins 2 in theaters at eight twice and noticed hulk hogan then at nine I saw this on video and noticed it’s a different version and hbo restored hulk hogan
