- Sandy Petersen is a world class video game designer thats worked on iconic games like Doom, Quake, Civilization, Age of Empires Series and Halo Wars. We talked about his time working at id software with John Carmack and John Romero. We also about his time at Ensemble Studios and the downfall of the company. This is a clip from The Bored With Nelly Podcast where we talked about some of the newer mechanics in Age Of Empires 2.

I agree with Sandy on wonders, and I feel bad for his disappointment, finding out how effort they put on them.
Well, at least "king of the hill" is popular. And wonders are used for styling on your oponent when you're winning so
I know it doesn't represent the competitive scene, but I play vs AI with my family and use Wonders occasionally. It might be nice if Wonders had a weak passive bonus such as in AoE3, but it would be challenging to implement and balance
We just need a new game mode with wonders starting to build themselves at the start of the game or something like that
I play with standard rules online, wonders are awesome to fight against and to defend!
give the man more time to answer questions, you keep cutting him off to race to the next point
Literally my only goal was to let him talk. Looking at pure analytics of my audio in audecity. I talk for 10% of this podcast, sandy for 90%. The trade off is you have many different topics. Realistically each topic could be its own podcast and however you do it, you can please everyone. I'll bring sandy back.
@@BoredWithNelly Sure, and I didn't mean to sound too critical. Its always understandably a fight between width and depth when it comes to these things - but I think the best part was listening to him talk about the Lithuanians and the way monks were designed, and would have loved to see more of that when it came to the other topics. It just felt a little rushed through: topic introduces, he gives his gut reaction, and rather than dive into it or what changes he might have made (I would love to hear how he plans to fix the Khmer! Or more about the initial design plans for wonders?) instead of just immediately moving to the next topic very abruptly.
@@mnug-uo3vi I have zero problems with critical comments that are sincere. They actually do have value. I'm still learning how to host so i'm nowhere near perfect. it was an hour and a half podcast and we could have talked for another 10 hours tbh. Just giving you an alternative perspective as a host. its a balancing act. keep in mind there is delay in discord and that dead air is not good for podcast listening. 1 second of silence in a video is not the same as 1 second of silence in audio. So im trying to listen and reflect while never getting so far into the topic that i stumble to transition. this segment i do agree isn't my best work but most of this pod i think went really well.
So much this. He wanted to elaborate but no, host just jumped to next subject before the dev could properly think about the topic dropped on him. It looks like host was doing the video because he was forced, with no interest in the subject. 1:35 and 1:41 were especially bad.
@@BoredWithNelly bruh just dont rush as much, you need to learn how to let the conversation flow. Noone wants to watch a podcast where its stilted and unnatural, learn from joe rogan and follow up on his words
@T90Official Should get this guy to co-cast a hidden cup match. How epic would that be?
Sandy/T90 collab would break the internet

I like how Sandy has to relearn them after having a video about learning about the new Civs in the game months ago.
I think what's missing in this, and what gives the impression of interviwer cutting interviwed, is that none of Sandy's comments are actually followed up, the subject is just moved on like you're on some deadline to cover. Nice idea and homage, but lacking in the interview itself
good point for improvement
Interview was like it was a fast castle build.
"Age 3 was where we did the crazy stuff"
Well, some of this stuff has spilt over
Yeah, Age I's monks were nightmare material. Even now the terrifying sound is still "wolololo" and not that "bwaahh bwaahh" from Age II 😅
Aoe1 monks sometimes instantly convert something, I once tried to kill them with the catapult, but by the time that I unload from transport boat, the color of it is different and when I try to convert it, my monk ends up getting killed.
We need a real aoe2 caster interviewing this guy, maybe spirit of the law..
Yeah. You have this super interesting dev on a zoom interview and the interviewer seems like some average player and not a serious AoE nerd.
plus SotL knows a lot more about the game, hidden mechanics and stuff. my question to Sandy would be. Why you hide all these bonuses! haha
There were a few units with a charge attack in aoeo so it's not "the first time in age of empires", tho those also got a speed boost, so it's not exactly the same. And in AOM many heroes and Myth units had things along these lines. Usually it was something more elaborate than "+30" attack, but still
Honestly didn't even think about AOM. I was thinking it was relatively new concept for aoe2
Well AoM was also the first to come up with the Flemish revolution under the even more badass name of Ragnarok.
age of empires 3 has a few charge attack/cooldown type moves too... the explorers have special attacks with a cooldown for treasure guardians or against cavalry, and india has a wonder that gives all your troops an attack boost for a few seconds when you click the button. sort of similar i suppose.
Wicked cool that you interviewed him, kinda wish you asked inquisitive questions though instead of plowing through a list of civs and techs
Maybe next time!
I thought it was "hide the pain harold" for a sec and got worried there.
Cumans were steppen people fleing from the mongols. Later they settled down in the center of the Hungarian Kingdom, and morfed into them. Today modern cumans are considered as one of the hungarian ethnic groups. Their (our) ancestors language and culture fully morfed into the hungarian. Only the names of their former settlements, and hungarian legends preserves their memory.
AoE2 preserves their memory too. Also, all this talk of Hungarians is making me hungary.

Awesome reaction 😂
I was also going to comment this but you beat me to it xD
Said every one on Earth. Even people who have no idea what a computer even is.
1:12 Sandy : Our Wonders, our Wonders, our - NOOOO!!!!!!
Monks are very popular in high level AoE2 but the micro is quite difficult.
MbL: The micro is easy. Just assign each monk to one of the twelve hot keys on your mouse.
I wish this got more attention from AOE2 fans, these interviews are fun
Not that long ago I played a coop game with my brother (who hadn't played in a while) against the AI (I forget the difficulty), and it actually got pretty tense when the AI dropped a wonder. My brother was about ready to give up, but we pushed through and destroyed the wonder in time, eventually winning the game. The thing with wonders and relics is that it forces you to take the offensive, sometimes before you're ready, and the defenders can use different tactics designed to merely stall you and run out the clock instead of actually destroying your army.
"we nerfed monks TOO MUCH" wtf...
Monks in aoe2 today are a lot different from the monks I remember in aoe2 back in the early 2000's.
@@nathanielb3510 how different?
@@wnihaunter3943 They very effective contr unit for knight line and elephants.
Really wanna play a Wonder game right now haha. Bit sad how monks didnt turn out as strong as he wanted them. But I think they would have needed a big revamp if that should have worked, if they got a buff in their current state they'd be OP. It would be super cool if monks were used a lot more in Imperial age though, like spanish and saracens with their unique tech never gets used. But in general monks are at a good spot right now, you make a few to get relics and protect your base from early knights, then use them as a support unit for converts and heal. Also insane vs elephant units.
Well Cumans settled in Hungary and serve Hungarian kinds as mercenaries/raiders afterwards. It was also one of reason of Mongol invasion to central Europe if I remember, Mongolians consider them their vassals and went to hunt them down. But Mongolians went away after some pillaging, Cumans stayed and made a lot of historical missunderstanding between them and mongolians in Europe for couple of centuries.
AoE2 is one of my favorite games, I am very happy with the re-release.
Cumans are actually called Kipchaks, He probably knows them by that name
not really. The Kipchaks where most likely a separate tribe.
No he font know about them because he was raised during the iron curtain and cumans are one of the nations who shaped eastern europe
@@ilfedarkfairy It's the same tribe federation but a different name.
The Kipchak-Cuman federation is what the game represents. Cumans get to be the civ name while Kipchaks are represented by being the unique unit.
Wonder wars were actually really really fun and pretty popular in AoE: Rise of Rome. That used to be one of my favorite game modes after I learned from an opponent how to optimize your building spacing with batista towers and go all in on heavy batista.
It was played a little bit in Age 2 as well, just nowhere near as popular and you couldn't build your bases as OP as you could in RoR. But iirc I would mainly use the Chinese because of the villager bonus.
This person needs to see a Monk Rush XD
Hes got a good point about “scraping the bottom of the barrel”...theres so many civs now and they overlap so much, they’ve lost alot of what makes them unique and have to introduce increasingly over the top units and techs.
Spaniards include Celts and Goths (besides original Iberians like me).
Update: some comments saying i shoulda let sandy talk more. I don't disagree. I could always do better as a host. This segment coulda been better. I think the rest of the pod was much better. However some people writing asshole comments, expect to get asshole replies. I come from one the most toxic communities on the internet, fifa community 😂. Don't expect me to be a saint while you talk shit to me.
If anyone has any pull with our Lord and savior Daut, please please ask him to come on the podcast. Massive fan of his and would love to have him on. Id be forever in your debt.
From my notes:
- Burgundians Coustillier a unique cavalry unit with a charge up attack with a cool down.
Unique tech called Flemish Revolution which upgrades all villagers to Flemish Militia
- Cumans can build another town center in feudal age.
- Khmer don’t require mills to drop off food. Villagers can garrison in houses.
- Lithuanians get +1 attack to knights for each relic (max 4)
- Portuguese. Have something called Feitoria in Imp age that cost 20 pop but generate resources constantly.
- Sicilians have unique military unit called the Sargent Donjons (stronger version of a watch tower). It can also train more Sargents. Unique tech is called the First Crusade which will spawn a one time back of 7 Sargents for each town center (max 5).
- Tatars Units deal +25% damage when fighting from high elevation. Unique unit called the Keshik which generates a small amount of gold when its fighting other units.
What we talked about in the video (From my notes) didnt get to the Tatars sadly. I was hoping Sandy would got a bit deeper into the history but maybe he will one day on his channel. I passed that idea onto him
Sorry to see all the hate in the comments here, thanks for doing this and uploading it to youtube as well! My only critiscism would be that it is kind of difficult to hear what the other guy is saying, but that issue is on his end, I think! (And maybe Discord’s!)
ah dude let the man speak his mind why the rush :(
Actualluly they lowered conversion times on aoe2 definitive edition. So they are better.
Aztec monks ARE good and used often. But I think the random conversion time makes monks in general a very risky and unreliable strategy
WTF is this cut? What was he about to say about the sicilians?
I love how much historical knowledge Sandy has and how much ideas, creativity and actual real things were put into the game. Awesome!
I'd love to hear his thoughts on historical accuracy of new civs and bonuses
@@kevinvs757 I get the feeling the AOE3DE devs know Jack about history.
Been watching your vids a ton today and literally just noticed the Kramer in the background. Lmao! Nice! Hahaha.
Arambai is not for burmese , Arambai is used by Meitei warrior in Kangleipak kingdom now known as Manipur state in India , Burmese scared everytime when they saw arambai tenngol , tenggol means army armbai means weapon they use.
Wish i could talk to him about the historic and balance aspects of the game
Cumans were in Kingdom Come Deliverance, sided with Hungary
Monks have been considered good and used a lot for a long time now!
Considered good by who? the top AOE2 players like Hera and Viper...those guys never use monks in serious play, its all about archers, cavalry archers and knights.

They use them all the time as a counter to Knights lol
Lithwanians used to be an empire with poland. Kinda big deal in eastern europe
We had a huge and expanding empire before Poland. Then our rulers got the opportunity to govern Poland too, and later join both countries into a confederacy (past the game period) .That was great for the ruling dynasty, but basically ended Lithuania as an eastward expanding empire.
shoulda mentioned bulgarians, the krepost/konnik thing is crazy.
oh no 3:30 was downright offensive as a Lithuanian myself :D

Hey you need to talk with Spirit of the Law he is a notorious AOE YTer he would be stoked for a convo
would love to watch Petersen in a stream with t90. that would be content for hours
All they needed to do to make monks really good is to allow attack move with them, and not making them convert the same unit.
The last sentence, choice cut haha. Surprise surprise it looks like an age3 update.
As the Godfather said about Sonny, he talks when he suppose to listen.
This is one of Sonny's biggest weakness.
I love playing with Wonders 😞👌🏿
i wish wonders was a thing with competitive.
me wanting to hear what Sandy had to say about Sicilians
*video ends
Flemish revolution is just Ragnarok from Age of Mythology
Nice game collection!
Gotta add some Commands and Colors Medieval in there
This man's tone is so dismissive, that I feel like he doesn't actually give a lick about what Sandy has to say. Comes off awfully rude to me.
Wonder should have a useful things so yeah, definetly useless building in MP
Sometimes it seems that Sandy is talking about something with passion and I want to listen, it would be nice to not rush to the next questions. Or let Sandy guide the conversation instead of following a script or something.
Any conversation with this man should be absolutely awesome. He must have excellent general knowledge on historical topics.
I see that Cramer in the background
Wait. There was an AoE one? I thought they just started at AoE2 and stopped there. Why have any other AoEs? I'm so confused.
People saying you keep cutting him off but it definitely seems like an issue of lag. you both start a sentence at the same time but don't hear each other for a couple seconds after
Gotta let him speak more mate
I agree with Sandy’s reactions lol. Scraping the bottom of the barrel for Lithuanians is right.
Sorry this guys historical knowledge is horrible. Reducing central asian civs to illiterate nomads is just extremely stupid. Especially due to the influence these empires had on medieval europa.
This guys so cool - love AOE content
Wonders are fine in Age of Mythology, why not AoE2?
I would also like to see wonders :'(
When you do an interview, you are supposed to give the subject time to actually answer the questions, not just speedrun reading your script. This was a huge wasted opportunity due to very, very poor interview skills.
Aoe2 de should hire him, the game is a mess
this guy might be polish
Age 3 the best
Cumans are turkic tribes.
Umm... This guy made a historical strategy game and doesn't know Burgundians, Cumans and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth?
The game is about the medieval period, including medieval Lithuania, not PLC (that was renaissance already, and also not so much 'Lithuania' anymore). But AoE is not exactly historical (or realistic) game anyway. History, and (cultures+civilisations+countries- game developers saw no distinction and put them all together into one mess) are all just a nice flavor. So whatever holes in historical knowledge he has, that does not matter too much.
Wow
WHAT?!
Come on man Chinese still don't have gun powder units, talk about historically accurate.
Play Kingdom Come: Deliverance and learn to hate the damn Cumans
Turks automatically making villagers?
What kind of historian he's if he doesnt know what cumans are nor Lithuanians xD
cumins
I wish the guy conducting interviewing knew more about the game. you can tell he's never played it. like having to look up to check if Khmer was a navy civ? or even the order through which he went through the civs you know this guy doesn't play or hasn't spent anytime researching the game.
I have 200 hours on aoe2 on steam. Probably 1000 lifetime. Im 1400 elo actually. Feel free to look me up NellyGotBored on steam. But i don't have all the information of the world in my head tho.
I don't think every aoe2 player must know by heart every civilization tech tree and bonuses. And for the order, I think he just went by the order they came to his mind, no need to present him by release date of the respective expansion, or by alphabetical order, or whatever order you had in mind.
Sometimes the civ type is worthless to describe the civilization and the unique unit doesn't even match the civ type or relevant bonuses
Dude. Not everybody is SotL. We're not encyclopedias.
This sounds like that meme from last year
"Oh you're an Age of Empires II fan? Name every civ, their bonuses, and the type of civilization they are"
aoe2 is turning into aoe3 and i hate it
Me too
what you mean?
I love it
It adds variety, if you want to have new civs they need to have new bonuses so they don't feel repetitive and basically most of the basic unique things you can have for a civ is already part of an existent one. Is just flavor for the new civs, no need to actually play them
@@MrFacu809 but that breaks the balance of the game.
So glad this guy isn't involved anymore. If he had had his way Aoe2 would be garbage like AOE3.
