      Quite agree. Love the 521, 620 and 720 series Datsun/Nissan trucks out there. Beautiful looks, small but mighty 4 cylinder engines in them that got really great gas mileage, and better looking than these ugly 4 door station wagon trucks with wagon wheels and thin tires on them that are on the road today.

      Yeah but look at the power and torque of modern Hybrids it is a HUGE difference in power and performance. I own a 1985 Nissan 720 4x4 believe me after driving these modern vehicles and then you get into one of these old vehicles it boggles your mind how weak and gutless they were. I would still buy one today if they still made them like that though. Those trucks were easily 300k mile engines if maintained and in some cases abused. I could care less about horsepower as long as it will do the speed limit, I just want cars and trucks that are reliable and last a long time. Back then you could buy a vehicle and easily have it paid for before a expensive repair shows up. Now I see 70k pick up trucks with engines failing before 100k miles and people still making payments replacing an engine for about 10 grand or more. GM is the worst with a 5.3l engine that was Bullet Proof in 2005 or older to a pos in 2022. Hell my 1985 Nissan 720 is more reliable today after 40+ years than my 2018 RAM 2500!

      A friend of mine has the Datsun 720 4x4, still runs and drives, needs new tires and an alignment though. Pulled it out of a field in non-running condition, had it running soon after getting it out of the field with just a little fuel and a battery and drove it up on the trailer and brought it home. Very simple trucks, but built to last unlike the cheap ass plastic shit being built today and sold for ridiculous prices because people are stupid enough to keep buying that shit.

    I love the little boxy compact cars of the 80s. Cars like the VW Rabbit, Dodge Omni, 1st gen Chevy Cavalier, Chevy Citation, and the 1st gen Ford Escort of course. I understand that cars like this had cheap build quality and were never intended to be considered "cool" but it is so sad to see such a tiny percentage have been preserved. The fact that these were built as "throw-away cars" has led to the near extinction of an entire era of automotive history. An effort must be made to preserve the few that remain. Whether considered desirable or not, a certain percentage of every car should stick around to be enjoyed and experienced. With time and scarcity, I believe even the most uncool cars become charming relics.

      Right, its the oil industry's fault we have safety tech like airbags and ABS and crumple zones and stability control, and on top of that, quiet interiors and comfortable seats and HP and torque figures that put 1980s super cars to shame. Go drag race your Hybrid with an Escort diesel. Try to merge on a freeway in that Escort where everyone is doin 70-80 in their 250 hp Accords and Fusions. Go pack your entire family into that Escort, I hope it's not more than 4 people or someone will have to sit in the cargo area. Stupid oil companies!

    They got 50 mpg in their test of that escort. I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist but I know that I have a diesel Sprinter van that will get 22 mpg with 3000 pounds of cargo and it's as aerodynamic as a barn. And diesel is quiet and clean. Someone should start putting 3 cylinder TDI diesels in small American passenger cars. I can't imagine they would get less than 50mpg.

      EPA is a friend of fuel companies. My 1996 full sized Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Recency Elite was 2 tons of American luxury. It had a 3800 series II v6 and got 24 mpg mix 27 on highway trip. I rented a new 2017 Charger with a 3.6L v6. It was loud, uncomfortable and got about 22 to 24 mpg. Highway (65-70mph) it got maybe 28 on flat ground.

    • @justbored9906
      @justbored9906 Před 4 lety

      Government regulations, better mpg, and increasing safety ratings are whats driving car prices up. Manufacturers put more time and money into research and development, which in turn have to increase sticker price to make a profit to stay in business. They don't want to, but need to. Cars would be a lot cheaper if these regulations weren't required

    Goes to show how more American the so called Foreign import vehicles are. Nissan and Toyota have been building vehicles here in the US since the 80's, but people just can't stand it that they're not so foreign and actually more American parts are used than the so called "American" automakers.

    The closest car to come to this efficiency right now is the Mitsubishi Mirage. Many report over 50 MPG. My pick is the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i miev.. just plug it in and pay 3.5 cents average per mile in electricity. The range is fine for 90% of the public and there is a lot of tax incentives too boot.
