    I didn't include this since it's only semi-relevant, but I found an interesting page on polyphenols in plant protein. That dirty taste many pea proteins have? Polyphenols! So the better tasting and looking the plant protein, the less healthy it is lol www.nizo.com/blog/polyphenols/

      It's like the case with various veggies.
      The better they are for your body, the more terrible they'll taste...
      Raw kale being the absolute worst among them.
      Reminds me also of the root which Neelix had offered Comander Chakotay.

      @kenhaze5230 Před 5 měsíci

      Everything is contingent and contextual, so surely, polyphenol content in pea protein "matters." But if using it specifically to reach protein targets, palatability might be a concern to the extent that "the healthiest pea protein is the one you actually eat."

    Beyond meat really helps elevate my meals, but I try to think of it like red meat and limit how much I have. And honestly, it's pricey. I find mixing it with beans and cheaper proteins is both cost effective, potentially healthier, and just as delicious!

    This caused me to walk down memory lane. 1980’s Southern California had quite a few stores and restaurants that were vegan/vegetarian. There were a lot of tofu/soy products as well as rice milk and rice milk ‘ice cream’ which was terrible. One of my favorite stores/cafe was called Mothers Kitchen. Ten year later in Texas there was a lot less available although they did have Whole Foods. It was really expensive though. I remember the Seventh Day Adventist who tend to be vegan or vegetarian ate a lot of unappetizing looking canned stuff back then. Things are a lot better now.😂

    Completely agree that meat substitutes using studies that don't have anything to do with their specific product is complete BS. Also, I just have a lot of problems with studies like EPIC that rely heavily on nutritional data that comes from nutritional questionnaires. I don't blame them for setting up studies like this, because the data is just naturally very hard to collect, but nutritional questionnaires are just really bad data. Relying on somebody to remember and self-report their own food intake over some period of time has way too high of a margin of error. On top of that, these types of studies are REALLY susceptible to healthy user bias. I don't know how trustworthy the data can possibly be considering the error margins that are not helped by scale.

    It was bread and beer that made early civilizations. Many grains were used but wheat was the foundation. The difference between then and now is in the milling and baking. Historically, milling and baking were local activities. Only recently has milling and baking been commercialize on a mass production basis. Stone ground whole wheat gave way to steel milled white bread that was mass marketed. The fact is that milled flour losses it's nutrition after a short time, thus for best nutrition, milling and baking need to be local. Remember the local bakeries? (big box store may have bakeries, but their bread comes in frozen and contains additives.)

    Super interesting content. Is it possible that Beyond Meat is considered UPF ?
    I’m going on 4 years vegan.
    I tried Beyond Meat a couple times- but it’s too meaty. Definitely too fatty to eat regularly. Very happy with Whole food - all the way - plus the occasional chocolate bar.
    Tonight : Steamed kale and potatoes 🥬 🥔 - a feast !

    As a committed omnivore, switching to processed meat substitute because you're worried about how processed your sausage is is like switching to smoking lots of weed because you're worried cigarettes were going to give you lung cancer. The fact they have to add a ton of synthetic vitamins to mock meat to get it to properly mimic the nutritional profile of meat should be a dead giveaway. Focus on eating whole foods, the more "natural" (i.e. less selectively bred for calories over nutrition) the better. Of course, there's processing for more nutrient density instead of less, like fermentation, but that's something you figure out on a case by case basis. I just focus on micronutrient density and getting more than the DRI of each micronutrient and essential amino acids and essential fatty acids, which naturally leads to both eating meat and vegetables, especially organ meat and green leafy vegetables. Lots and lots of stews in my diet.

    I am vegan. Veganism is not a diet. It’s recognition that all animals lives are sacred and don’t exist as commodities in all forms. As far as ‘food’, as a vegan, my diet is plant based.
    Please don’t worry about the food I put in my mouth. Healthy or not.

    I'm convinced beyond meat is lab meat and can technically be throbbed of as vegan meat, ask me how real fat that spark fire under your grill is plant based?

      It is not fake meat from a lab. It is just a bunch of processes plants, and chemicals to try an mimic meat. Fake meat from a lab is expensive and will always be expensive.
