Born in 1938, I was fortunate to have a Godfather who took his role seriously. An army Major, served in North Africa, he was a man of action and adventure. His birthday & Xmas gifts were books about discovery and adventure, one of those books was by Jacques Cousteau and underwater adventure, Edmund Hilary & Mt Everest was another. In 1968 I left the UK for a prime job opportunity in Hobart, Tasmania Australia. The new Clinical School was opposite a scuba diving centre!. It was not long before I had a wetsuit, new SeaBee regulator and a dive tank with a J reserve handle. Over the years many a time I have sucked the tank dry, coming home with enough Cary’s and abalone to feed us all week. At 85, I am forever indebted to my uncle & JC, for giving me the interest & equipment to achieve what my uncle had sown in a youngster’s mind. Greetings from Tasmania Australia.👍😁🇦🇺🦘
In grade school Jaques Cousteau was my hero. Most of my peers watched football, base ball or basketball. Nope i wanted to learn what was happening on the RV Calypso. And because of my fascination with mister Cousteau on my eighth grade gradation my father asked what i wanted for a present. I said i wanted to learn to scuba drive like Jaques Cousteau. So we all got to learn how. It became a family thing. Thank you mister Cousteau.
Ted Eldred’s development of the Porpoise single-hose Scuba regulator is a perfect example of the curiosity and resourcefulness of the human mind. As a Scuba instructor and diving enthusiast for forty years, I'm constantly striving to learn more about the pioneers who helped bring us the equipment we rely on to explore the underwater world. Although I already knew about Ted’s diving system, through some diligent research on the internet, you did a brilliant job of telling his story. I hope your video will help to spread to the Scuba diving community this obscure but significant bit of history. Thank you for taking the time to make your video.

I began diving sixty years ago because of watching Jacque Cousteau. Cousteau was and has been a inspiration to me.
I’ve been a recreational diver since 1967 when I took lessons at the YMCA at 11 years old. I’m now 67 years old and still diving, although not as much, and not as deep, but over my lifetime I was able to do most everything one can do in recreational diving including instructing and stage decompression diving. Double hose regs were still in use when I first took classes in ‘67, but I never used one. The class had both but they gave me the single hose reg, and I never used the double hose for the rest of my life, since they went out of use by the time I was diving frequently. The first reg I purchased was the U.S Divers (Aqualung) Calypso which I still have hanging in my garage. I’m basically familiar with regulators having worked in a dive shop helping to rebuild them as part of my Dive Master training, but I never knew that the double hose was due to pressure differential. I always assumed it was just an exhaust, which always made better sense to me than modern single hose regs which exhaust in your face. This was a fascinating video and you have my subscription. My Dad worked at U.S. Divers (now Aqua Lung) and worked with Jacques Cousteau on several occasions and even photographed him and the Cousteau Divers. He has some really cool stories.

DIFFERENT than the double hose, not necessarily "better." For some applications, such as underwater photography, many divers prefer double hose regulators because they keep the bubbles away from your face and your camera. For that reason, used double hose regulators are still sought after, and new ones come to market from time to time.

Great reminder! I still have my ol'n'battered single-stage twin-hose Mistral, just like the one you showed, 150 bar-rated; though completely outdated, it certainly breaths like nothing else except top-notch twin-stagers...
I was a commercial diver for many years and used both single hose systems for helmets from the KMB8 onwards, and twin hose regulators back in the day when SCUBA was a legitimate diving apparatus. Thankfully SCUBA is or should I say, is no longer a safe and viable means to conduct commercial diving operations. However, I recall clearly that in the early days I had a preference for the "Mistral' twin hose system until the Poseidon single hose regulators were adopted. That was a watershed in breathability and ease of use compared with anything else available at the time. ( Mid '70's) .

Back in the 60s my father was a plumber/ boilermaker in Sydney Australia. He was an avid spear fisherman in his spare time as well. Hearing about the newfangled diving apparatus he got hold of some plans for a regulator of the design Cousteau had invented and set about making it out of sheet brass etc. Apparently he sold the rig in the 60s but kept the plans, he passed them on to me before he passed away recently.

In the 1980s i was able to have chat with 2 crew members from the calypso they were dock at swanhunter chagaramas trinidad west indies.
I don't see Cousteau as an inventor,
The only thing that Emile Gagnan done was to repurpose something that was used for another activity, the rest is simply upgrading to resist the marine environment.
The best illustration of that was the repurpose of an aviation demand regulator as described in the Popular Science of july 1953.

My dad made one of these back in the 50's and I learned to use it as a kid about 10 years old. It used an aircraft demand regulator and oxygen bottle. He had previously made a diving helmet out of a small barrel with a long hose and surface air pump. He actually found an outboard motor and a Skidoo that had broken through the ice using it.

I'm a long time diver. So. california dive boat charters mostly. Unfortunately one trip we had a father die on a dive. His rebreather was the fault. Pour son had to motor for hours with his dad under a cover. It was sad for all of us.
