The text below is captioned within the start of the video if you enable CC (subtitles).Hello and thank you for joining our early morning walk. It is 8:30 am. Today we are walking in Wiltshire, in the south-west of England. Our walk today takes us from the small village of Avoncliff to the hamlet of Turleigh… and back. We start at Avoncliff where the Kennet & Avon Canal crosses over the River Avon and the railway line via the Avoncliff Aqueduct. The aqueduct is Grade 2 listed and was constructed between 1797 and 1801. John Rennie was the Chief Architect and Engineer, he also designed Waterloo Bridge in London. Mr Rennie built the aqueduct to avoid using the more commonly known canal lock system for going up and down hills. The aqueduct has had a troubled history, with numerous leaks and petitions to close it during the 18th and 19th century. In 1954 after a major leak the aqueduct was drained. In 1956 a petition was presented to the Queen to re-open it. In 1980 restoration work began. The Kennet & Avon Canal Trust and British Waterways completed the work in 1998. In the 1840s Isambard Kingdom Brunel constructed the Great Western Railway between Bath and Westbury. It must have been a site to see here at Avoncliff as they had to bore (dig) under the canal to build the track. Avoncliff Halt station opened along the track in 1906, and was originally only a wood structure. We’ll visit the platform towards the end of the video. It is the only aqueduct to have it is own railway station. Trains from the platform go to Bradford-on-Avon, Trowbridge, Westbury, Weymouth, Bath Spa, Bristol and Gloucester. A train to London Paddington would take about two hours, changing at Bath Spa station. Originally you had to wave the trains down to stop for you on the platform, since 2011 it has become a regular stop. If you ever make it here the pub and tearoom are lovely. Do check the opening times before you make a trip though. In a while we will leave Avoncliff, walk down the road a little and head down a bridleway. Bridleways can be used on foot or on horseback, quite often the ground is a little more uneven than a normal footpath. The bridleway will take us to the hamlet of Turleigh. Traditionally in Britain hamlets are smaller than villages and do not have churches. Turleigh Manor was established in the 17th and 18th century and during this time prospered. People living in the hamlet would have been the likes of quarrymen, stonemasons and tanners. Turleigh is now residential only. The pub closed in 1952, the bakery in 1957 and the post office in 1970. There is however a library, see if you can spot it later on. For such a small area Turleigh has some lovely unique period buildings. If you were going to visit either Turleigh or Avoncliff I would recommend walking, cycling, canal or train the roads are very small, mostly single car width, with many tight bends. This was one of my favourite morning walks, I had never been to Turleigh or Avoncliff before. I felt a lightness and happiness in my step knowing that I was going to share this with you. I hope you enjoyed finding out some information about the area also. Please like the video and subscribe. Do leave a comment, it is lovely to hear from people all over the world. I feel fortunate to be making friends in lots of places. It gives me great pleasure to make places like this accessible to people. I hope you enjoy the rest of the walk.

A fantastic walk, but what particularly catches the attention is the first five minutes or so of this video - truly a work of art in terms of its composition. It takes what is beautiful and elevates it to something beyond. Great talent, absolutely mesmerising. Many thanks.

Thank you for watching! It its so nice to hear that you find these walks relaxing. I often wonder about adding more history facts in!
I did a bit of research on the mill and found this: A cloth mill built by c.1790 from roughly-dressed limestone, of two storeys with about four bays, with a detached two stoey range to the south. It stands at the south end of Avoncliff weir. It was converted into a dwelling by 1998. The pantiled roof has coped gables and the windows have been replaced. The mill was reputed to contain a late 19th-early 20th century turbine. To west of this is tall square chimney of brick with large ashlar quoins. There has been a mill on this site since at least the 16th century.
And this about the manor: House, late C17 to early C18, ashlar, with hipped stone slate roof and two square corniced ashlar stacks. Two storeys and attic, square plan with formal matching early C18 style fronts to south and east and late C17 style front to west. South and east fronts have modillion cornice and parapet, cornice with heavy pulvinated frieze over ground floor and moulded plinth. Twelve-pane sashes in moulded architraves with moulded sills, the heads of the ground floor windows breaking into the base of the moulded cornice above. Seven-window south front with centre windows closely spaced and panelled double doors in open-pedimented bolection moulded surround with urn in pediment. East front has similar four-window range and two segmental-headed small-paned dormers. Some ground floor windows on both fronts have been lowered. West front is of squared rubble with moulded dripcourse and eaves cornice, the eaves cornice continuing the bottom moulding of the main cornice of south front. Five-window range of chamfered recessed 2-light mullion-and-transom windows and centre door in bolection surround. l½ storey kitchen attached at north west angle. North front is irregular but with cornice carried round. Two ground floor C17 ovolo-moulded 2-light mullion windows and a large tripartite stairlight. A stone-fronted flat dormer has recessed chamfered 2-light mullion window. Interior: altered in C20 but said to have fine twisted baluster staircase and panelled rooms. Part of the pre-Reformation Bradford parsonage lands held by the Dean and Chapter of Bristol 1542-1861. Recorded as held by Barnes family c1548-1615, by the Dicke family, clothiers, 1615-70, J. Curll, clothier 1670-1707, John Daw 1707-27, John Thresher, clothier, 1727 and by descent to Sir Bourchier Wrey c1760, and by Ann Atwood 1811. During most of the C18 the house was tenanted, from 1733-47 by J. Baskerville, clothier, and was described in 1747 as 'a very compleat well built house, with all necessary and convenient out-houses, dye-house, wool-lofts....'. From 1775 the tenant was Richard Atwood, of the noted Bath family of builders and architects. He is recorded as a close friend of the statesman Edmund Burke who is said to have visited. The Rev W. Romaine is said to have written his 'Walk and Triumph of Faith' here 1771. (Information R. and B. Harvey; R.E.M. Peach Rambles about Bath 1876 408; N. Pevsner Wiltshire 1975 540)

no 10 tea house in Avoncliff has spectacular baked goods and savories - all made on the premises. check for open times before you go. also, i highly recommend walking the towpath towards Bath for a bit, crossing the elbow bridge, heading up the hill via either the road or the path off to the left. left will take you on a longer loop up through Winsley, past a spring system out of a rock wall, then back down around Turleigh and the wooded hill you walked up and down.

Thank you . That is a very kind comment. Somewhere like Bradford on Avon may be a good choice as there is train and buses. There are also nice walks along the canal, nice cafes and pubs too.

Actually, this is perfect. We've been searching for a few months now and this is exactly what we wanted. Thank you so much. May your days be full of happiness and good fortune.

Very nice. Have ever walked the white cliffs of Dover?

If the cars were absent from roadsides , one would feel like arriving in 15th or 16th century . It's beautiful no doubt but I wonder what made them to go out in the world & colonise other countries. Why weren't they satisfied with their calm , green beautiful surroundings ?

An interesting question and one that will tick over in my mind, it is a need to explore but also some urge to concur...

Brilliant!! this is part of my pre covid cycle route. I watched it as I walked on the treadmill. Any Chance of an unedited version?
Anyway, I loved this, thanks very much for posting.

Thanks Jake! The unedited video was about 1 hour long and a bit shaky in parts... maybe I will try for a continuous shot in on of my next walks. Keep up with the treadmill and cycling!
