About Julien Baker:
A Memphis, Tennessee-based singer/songwriter with a knack for finding the shaky ground between heart-wrenching and cathartic, Julien Baker's stark and soulful music invokes names like Bon Iver, Daughter, Birdy, and Natalie Prass. Baker honed her skills while playing in her high school band Forrister, with whom she continued to perform while attending college. After writing a batch of songs that didn't seem to fit the band's more rock-oriented vibe, Baker headed to Matthew E. White's Spacebomb Studios in Richmond, Virginia to begin recording what would eventually become her solo debut, 2015's critically acclaimed, 6131 Records-issued Sprained Ankle.

The first time I heard this song I cried uncontrollably. For an atheist, I sure do listen to a lot of music with religious overtones.
She reminds me, in a way, of Leonard Cohen. Not so much stylistically, but both of them make a lot of songs with this overarching vibe of "Lord I believe, but we're gonna have a real long talk about some of this shit when I get up there". They both display the apparently rare gift of being able to write spiritual music that doesn't preach at you and isn't filled with the same tired platitudes.

I'm in love. Honestly, had the album on repeat from 8 am to 8 pm while working. So much emotion in her lyrics, her playing, her expression. I haven't felt so close to an album in awhile. I don't think she understand how much all of this means; how hard it hits. Feels nice not being alone.

I wouldn't go that far. But it does shed a bit of light on the perceived darkness, sadness and self-loathing in her lyrics. I imagine it has to be difficult to reconcile her religious beliefs and her sexuality. I can never understand being a member of a group that hates you for who you are. :/ I feel terrible for her when I hear this song... and I hope she finds her way out of the fairy tale sooner than later.
@@ronnieeudey5994 She actually was embraced by both her family and church when she came out. Also, I think she's in the Episcopal church which is pro LGBT among other things. She's sung repeatedly about people assuming things about her and others, which is exactly what you're doing here.

The final 90 seconds Julien is not using her head voice nor her chest voice, but the voice from her soul. Stunning. Love this acoustic version (the electric guitar version from the Audiotree Sessions is awesome as well). I could watch this over and over (and I have).

Julien. I thought I loved you before when I saw you on NPR. Your songs are so good. But when I saw you in that jacket with the Spinal Tap patch just know that you've got a fan for life.
I love how every live performance is slightly different, as if they were different songs. Every time highlighting a different shade of emotion. This is pure emotional genius. Love Julien.
