Julien Baker with an absolutely beautiful cover of Accident Prone from 90s punkrock band Jawbreaker. Live at the Botanique in Brussels/Bruxelles, Belgium on 22-05-2016
My favorite part about this is it really highlights just how brilliant of a songwriter and lyricist Blake Schwarzenbach is, and how great of a musician Julien is.
How could someone born the same year Jawbreaker broke up sound like they invented the 90's on a piano? As a ghost of such times, I'd like to say thanks for carrying a breath of lost air to our long-emptied lungs.
Carpe Imodiem I have children older than her and I raised them up listening to my music I loved. They also taught me their new music . I learned from them and they learned from me. My oldest is 27!
Katherine Adair That's awesome. I have friends who have similar music influences with their kids. But I still have no idea how any of them could do what Julien Baker does. It really makes a great case for reincarnation. Like she was a 20-something who tragically died in a car accident in 1995, listening to Dear You, on the way to band practice. And the shit just echoed...
every time i share Julien w/ anyone, i always comment on how unbelievable it is for someone of her age to be as remarkable as she has proven herself to be. both intoxicating and daunting.
The maniscus didn't break, but got blinked away twice. As solid as this was, I still think the omission of, perhaps, the greatesr guitar slide ever recorded is worth noting -- climb in there a rake a few strings, eh?
Julien Baker is truly an inspiration in all she does. She is not only a next level, fucking LEGEND of an artist, but such a spectacular person as well. She is one of the best musicians of the modern age, as evident in this cover of a Jawbreaker song. If you think this is good, listen to her solo stuff.
For over a year I have come back to this vid countless times, I think it may well be the best thing I have ever seen. It devastates yet heals in equal measures. Every time. I could watch JB all night every night. She is saving everything.
It's something else to see one of your favourite artists cover another one of your favourite artists, and to do it so perfectly. This video is a miracle.
This is what happens when you get a truly talented person who just so happens to have gotten into really awesome music instead of all the really mainstream stuff! So good!
This is still phenomenal. Met Julien in Sept. 2016 after the show-- wore my Jawbreaker "Dear You" shirt to the show-- she complimented it and was extremely cool... we had a nice convo. Asked her to take a pic with me and she happily obliged. She is utterly brilliant, and so is Blake Schwarzenbach (duh).
I just got out of 40 days of solitary confinement in county jail. 10 days of which they took my mattress and left me like a dog on the floor without my our out. This song in these words and this version is what kept me from harming myself and for that I'm eternally grateful.
t hasn't been my day for a couple years What's a couple more? And if I go, don't forget the one good thing I almost did I learned your name without words I used my eyes, not my hands [Verse 2] What's the closest you can come to an almost total wreck And still walk away, all limbs intact? And when I go, you'll be there Crying out, begging me I won't hear I'll just go fast into this night on broken legs [Chorus] A near miss or a close call? I keep a room at the hospital I scratch my accidents into the wall I couldn't wait to breathe your breath I cut in line, I bled to death I got to you, there was nothing left Verse 3] What's the meanest you can be to the one you claim to love And still smile to your new found friends? In the same confusing breath You pull away and draw me in I wanted you, you wanted more I built this life and now it's mine [Chorus] A near miss or a close call? I keep a room at the hospital I scratch my accidents into the wall I couldn't wait to breathe your breath I cut in line, I bled to death I got to you, there was nothing left [Instrumental passage] [Chorus] A near miss or a close call? I keep a room at the hospital I scratch my accidents into the wall I couldn't wait to breathe your breath I cut in line, I bled to death I got to you, there was nothing left
Pretty much every sentiment shared by every other person who has commented...I've been watching this over and over again for the last week. It's so overwhelming I just didn't even know how to compartmentalize it. I've never commented on a CZcams video. I rarely comment on any internet conversations but this? Man this is just to good. And this person should be complimented over and over for the performance. Just fucking stunned. Another middle aged skateboarder that grew up on Jawbreaker and the like. Blake in my opinion has penned some of the best songs ever no doubt. And having seen them on the Dear You tour and also 21 years later at Riot Fest a couple of months ago (such a great surprise) I can say that the band has not lost a bit of what I've loved about them for the 30 last years but this kid. Absolutely insanely well done rendition. Maybe I'm just getting old and soft but I just might dare say I like this better than the original. And I now want to punch myself in the face for saying that. Seriously on the fence! End of the day both are amazing. Love Jawbreaker, Jets, Thorns, Forgetters, basically everything Blake puts his voice to but good goddamn Ms. Baker. Mad respect and you just gained yet another new fan. The best to you and your career. Thanks for making me cry more than I care to admit. It's great to get it out and you definitely opened the waterworks with this!
Yeah this is just amazing. I'm 13 and I absolutely love music like this, mineral and knapsack are bands I really like as well. But this performance is just breathtaking. Like its absolutely amazing how well she covered an already beautiful song
Same here man, she pulls out every inch of my soul. Blake had that effect on me as well but she brought it to another leavel. Feels like she ownes it and not just trying to do a cover of a killer song.
I’m right there with you... feel like I can’t remember the last time I was stunned... each time I watch I think I can hold it together and by the last minute or so the waterworks just start flowing
Was there a Dear You tour? Kinda doubt that, seeing as how they were essentially broken up before the album was even finished being recorded, let alone released.
I recently got divorced...23 years with the same person. I've been crushed for a couple of years now since it was a process. This sums up how it feels when you know the relationship isn't good for you anymore, but how it's so hard to just leave.
Brilliant. Beautiful. And Haunting. I agree with the earlier sentiments. Thank you for posting this. It truly is a salve for the forgotton lot of us, stuck in a limbo world where we were too young for hair rock, but too old to be Gen-X. This music was our identity. This was our voice. These were our songs that we cherished and took hold of in our souls. Some of us never forgot that feeling. While we all grow older and more disillusioned with the world around us, it is a comfort to know that in the world there is still young people out there that take the time to reach out to us, even if just for a song.
The last two years have been extremely complicated for everyone. To hear such a lovely and perfect cover of an already amazing song brought tears and feelings that I thought were forgotten. Thank you. We all need this right now.
This is magnificent! Jawbreaker are one of the greatest bands ever and it's great to see someone who is so young breathing new life into a classic track.
Nicely arranged. Didn't do the tempo changes in the original and the light piano and her higher register really gives this a great feel. I think this might be my favorite performance of hers.
I love how after she's done, she kinda wakes up with a look that says, "where did I go"? Luckily wherever that is she transports us with her. Never seen such a self effacing performer - so refreshing.
Frank Iero sent me here months ago. I cry every time I hear this song. It is so beautifully redone! I became a fan instantly!! Her other stuff is great as well!
Awesome cover of an awesome song. Jawbreaker continue to inspire so many people so many years after they stopped writing these wonderful songs! Piano skills are insane.
Seeing…. Feeling another person , like, get THIS song… I feel less alone. None of us are, but you know? It’s special. It’s that song that does that thing. They do a very, VERY good representation of this song.
Goddamn! That made me cry of how well she played my favorite jawbreaker song! I’m so happy she even attempted that. Born the same day as Dear You. WTF is going on? Never stop girl... you got this!!!
What's the furthest place from here? It hasn't been my day for a couple years. What's a couple more? And if I go, don't forget the one good thing I almost did. I learned your name without words. I used my eyes, not my hands. What's the closest you can come to an almost total wreck and still walk away, All limbs intact? And when I go, you'll be there crying out, begging me. I won't hear. I think blake would be really proud of this version... Now... If she does sea anemone... I can play it in my head already.
I heard of jawbreaker recently and love them more because of this cover..this is the only video i saved in my phone..how she sang and played this song is beyond words..
Wow this has to be one of the greatest covers ever. Funny thing is I am not even a huge fan of Jawbreaker nor of Julien Baker. Don't get me wrong I respect both and think both are great artists, just have never listened to either very much. "I got to you there was nothing left"
Great cover. The original is amazing but this version is fresh and I would say equal in emotional impact. This is how covers should be executed, finding a different voice in the song that still captures the original. Brilliant.
Seriously, this needs to be on the next record...This can't just exist as a live CZcams video...I need this in my life with piano...I love Jawbreaker but you are just simply a better singer than Blake...Sorry but it's true...
Absolutely beautiful rendition and very true to the original. She has a great voice and I hope she has a lovely career doing whatever she likes to do. Unfortunately, I now have an unrealistic desire to hear her cover every one of my favorite punk and old-school rock songs. I'd like to hear JB Chesterfield king, and maybe some bands like no knife, Thursday, samiam, thrice (beltsville crucible) etc. Again, nicely done.
Dr. Beau Diehl if she did beltsville crucible I would die. She does an amazing job with all of the songs she does but thrice being my favorite band, I would eat it up if she did anything in that sort.
Out of all the covers I've heard of Jawbreaker songs by bands , in my opinion this is the only cover that does justice to their songs. Love Jawbreaker since I first heard Want from the Unfun record back in 91'
Every time I come back to this, I'm more convinced that it is one of the greatest covers I've ever heard.
I completely agree. She took a sad emo punk song and made it utterly heartbreaking, spellbinding and completely gorgeous.
czcams.com/video/fpT4p8nzor4/video.html if you haven't yet. This is also an amazing cover.
Totally. The way she uses the piano to encompass all the instruments of the song and just the raw emotion is phenomenal.
It is, indeed
phenomenal
My favorite part about this is it really highlights just how brilliant of a songwriter and lyricist Blake Schwarzenbach is, and how great of a musician Julien is.
Absolutely.
Oh my fawkin gawd YES!!! He wasn't an English major for nothing.
@@DSPHistoricalSociety or an English professor for nothing!
Yeah his lyrics are ace.
Predictably heartbreaking musician plays a predictably heartbreaking song and I still couldn't brace myself for the impact.
William Lim well put
Wow, I felt nauseated while listening. Not much hits me like this when I'm on my meds. I'd like to hear her play "In sadding around"
Getting Sodas. Woooo!
Well said
That face she makes at the end is like "Oh god, they hated that didn't they?" and then the relief when everyone claps haha adorable.
"It hasn't been my day for a couple years. What's a couple more?"
best line
Holy shit. She really unlocked something in this song. Stunning.
I would kill for a studio version of this.
Life isn't just.
Same!
@@user-zz5rk7xc4w so... we should kill?? Lol
I would kill just cause
"I would kill for more/I haven't killed before"

Holy shit, my dog just came over to comfort me. 40 year old man weeping like it was the first time I heard this tune when I was 16. Gorgeous.
Im weeping too. I have no shame anyway. Hapiness or a close call? I wouldnt.
Amen!
I cried through the entire song. I'm a 41 year old man. This hit me hard
David Leyh me too 34 yr old woman
David Leyh Especially the ending though Jesus.. That hits me hard every time I listen..

Thank you Blake for writing this. And Julien thank you for playing it in the most beautiful way.

This is the best Jawbreaker cover I have ever heard over 15 years of listening to JB covers. Absolutely floored.
cause JB covers JB :)) may be
I'm back, eight years later. I finally saw her perform last summer with boygenius and all I could think was ROCK GOD. THE RANGE. What a talent!
It must be so damn hard to become good enough to make things look this damn easy.

To me, this is the equivalent of watching Jeff Buckley play Hallelujah. It's that good.
yesss
Absolutely!
I dare say 'better'!
Something about the power of JBs to cover songs like they're new.
why can you only like it once
this changed my life
I have never heard anything more beautiful in my life.

But it couldn't possibly be better than this.

My favorite solo artist covering my favorite song by my favorite band. I will never get over how beautiful this cover is

Blessed up the moment this girl decided to start to sing.
honestly, 4:45 is where shit starts getting real. she made this some Westworld shit.

Gave me goosebumps. Jawbreaker is one of my all-time favs
Julian Baker reminds me of Tom Waits. The sadder they get with their music, the better it gets.
Amazing. How lucky are we to know this masterpiece.

Erica Jane Impossible...

I lasted about 30 seconds. Story of my life really
You owe me ten bucks

They do a very, VERY good representation of this song.

Goddamn! That made me cry of how well she played my favorite jawbreaker song! I’m so happy she even attempted that. Born the same day as Dear You. WTF is going on? Never stop girl... you got this!!!
God how do she cover the most random songs I’ve always loved? She’s such a weirdo and I love it!

This is insanely good to the point it gives me goosebumps.
I got late to the party... I just got to know Julien yesterday because a.v club uploaded her cover of dcfc's photobooth (one of my favorite bands and one of my favorite songs) and she blew my mind... I fell in love with her as a whole (her voice, her sound, her quirkiness) i've listen her album non stop and now i see this cover from another of my favorite bands... My heart just melts... I think blake would be really proud of this version...

The same for me ... exactly... with the Photobooth and the rest :-)
Jawbreaker put a bit of this video at the end of their documentary 'Don't Break Down' so they have all heard it and liked it.
i like to revisit this cover whenever i'm sad. probably my favourite julien baker cover
The most impactful song from my high school lessons in the early 90's, seemingly upgraded, and I came upon by this version by chance.
If this song didn’t make me wanna cry before, it does now.
What I like about it, is the way she uses the piano to play the bass and guitar parts.
this is the most beautiful thing i've ever heard.
Julien, you did a wonderful cover of this mythic Jawbreaker song. I am speechless ...
Wow just wow! This is probably the true testament to talent and song writing. Blake himself would be speechless by this performance.
I heard of jawbreaker recently and love them more because of this cover..this is the only video i saved in my phone..how she sang and played this song is beyond words..
Holy shit I love this. Can't stop watching
Such an unexpected cover of one of my fave songs by one a seriously talented musician I already was a fan of.
Incredible, your version brings tears to my eyes.
JawBaker! I love it.

Wow! This is gorgeous, thank you.
A beautiful cover of a song with gorgeous lyrics. "I learned your name without words" is one for the true hearts.
I opened for jawbreaker in 96. Chicago. Metro

i would die if she covered a Hum or Centaur song omfg
Absolutely beautiful rendition and very true to the original. She has a great voice and I hope she has a lovely career doing whatever she likes to do. Unfortunately, I now have an unrealistic desire to hear her cover every one of my favorite punk and old-school rock songs. I'd like to hear JB Chesterfield king, and maybe some bands like no knife, Thursday, samiam, thrice (beltsville crucible) etc. Again, nicely done.
Exactly!!
Cassino's cover of Chesterfield King = Fire
Dr. Beau Diehl if she did beltsville crucible I would die. She does an amazing job with all of the songs she does but thrice being my favorite band, I would eat it up if she did anything in that sort.
Samiam dull is my request.
Samiam stepson now that would be friggin awesome
Out of all the covers I've heard of Jawbreaker songs by bands , in my opinion this is the only cover that does justice to their songs. Love Jawbreaker since I first heard Want from the Unfun record back in 91'
Amazing! Julien taking up the piano and absorbing it oh so well. Love how at the end of the song she looks at the crowd, not sure if it was good.
Got any idea what she is saying in the beginning? "This song's for...???"
I hear "...my new friend Tom"
Hymnal27@ Seems to be the case. Context lacking, of course :'-(
GhostlyJorg She says "this song is for my new friend Tom" in the sweetest voice I've ever heard.. Just thought I'd throw that in there..
She has the voice of an angel.
Still as the power to bring a tear to my eye. A Beautiful cover of a brilliant song by a transformative band.

The best cover
The piano really emphasizes some of the cool compositional elements in this song.
there's a bit of this video at the end of the Jawbreaker documentary 'Don't break down'.
Thanks frank iero I LOVE IT!!!
This is amazing, beautiful and sublime
Tears...... Amazing!
