Love this!! Is it silly that this is one of my more loved videos? I take homesteading so seriously, it's all about the food, baby! Not the trendy, oh it's cute, hobby farming stuff you see out there. Seeing the massive amounts of food stored away makes me more happy than any pretty scene of lovely areas. Silly, I know. But it makes my heart sing when I see my carefully stored foods I raised laboriously. And seeing yours makes my heart sing the same way. Thanks for sharing! ❤

Have you got CO2 meter in the cellar? Since carbon dioxide is heavier than air it can accumulate in secluded areas like cellars without ventilation. Stay safe. Stay Elliott Homestead.

Oh gee...now that I've found your channel and some of the other homesteaders I'm feeling equal parts inspired, embarrassed, overwhelmed, and encouraged. I struggle to get Kraft Dinner on the table for my three kids, and you just put a beautiful salad and DUCK on the table. I struggle to define whether I am just a different type of person and should enjoy the lifestyle we are living, or whether I need to make changes to get closer to what I see in your family. It doesn't help that my husband's MS holds him back and therefor seems to anchor our family in a bit of chaos and sometimes despair. But we've been going at this for 12.5 years and we love each other and our kids more today than yesterday. Maybe we'll get where we need to be or find the peace in where we are now along the way.

I keep watching your videos because I want to make subsistence farming a hobby of mine when I save up enough money to buy a property. It's a lot of work. I know it is. But not relying on the economy for my food, water, shelter, and sanitation has been a dream of mine since I was 14.
The next part of the comment is dreamy rambling. You don't have to read it.
I've talked to my little brother. He says he wouldn't be opposed to sharing a property. I could grow food, and he would have a lot of fun with some nice toys in the shop.
We both have an interest in sustainability and independence. But since it will be just a hobby, I don't expect to completely feed ourselves with the garden.
Hopefully our future wives will be okay with the hobby. I won't expect my wife to participate in my hobby, and I sure won't expect her to be domestic. She can be, if she wants- and if our financial situation allows. But I expect to be a careerwoman, and I don't want to be a mom, stay at home or otherwise. I like kids, but I don't want to be a parent.
I will spoil my brothers future children rotten though. My future wife and I will be the best aunties ever.
I sure hope I can save enough money for a large-ish property. A handful of acres. With the recession on the way, and me not even having my first job, I'm afraid that I'm getting ahead of myself. I probably won't ever have enough money to buy a property, especially one within an hour's commute of where I will likely work.
Ah well. Daydreams are better than reality anyway. Reality is suffering, daydreams are warm and comforting. So it may be for the best that my daydream will never come true. I'll still work for it though.
I hope your reality isn't suffering. I hope your life is warm and comforting, as daydreams are. Perhaps your life is just plain boring, with spots of hardship and spots of joy. That would be nice too.

Hi. Love your CZcams posts. I have a Shetland sheep farm in Maine. Would you mind posting an episode on how you built your walk in fridge?

That is so beautiful! We have a small cold room under our stairs, but I would love to have one as big as yours! We are actually in the process of looking for a new home, and a cold room is on the 'must' list.

@@theelliotthomestead: I was wondering the same thing. What temp do you try to maintain, & how long can meats remain fresh? How many sq feet is it? Did you use a motor / compressor from a fridge? I was thinking that you must have to seal the room somehow, so you can afford to keep everything chilled, then I remembered you just put in a new ceiling panel, & had mentioned there was a hole in the kitchen floor, & you didn't put in insulation before putting up the panel...so how do you retain the ideal temp & regulate moisture?
The weather has turned quite cold here, so I'm using a back hall & a big heavy duty plastic bin to store my food which can be frozen, or at least kept from in the 40s to the teens. I adapt what is stored outside as the weather changes.
Right now, my back hall is cool enough to keep the milk & dairy items fresh for a week, veggies that like to be kept cold, & . breads - for short term use, while extra breads are kept in the outside bin when I buy extras on sale, & are allowed to freeze.
Are mice or other critters ever a problem in your walk-in? Pill bugs, moths?
