  • HOMESCHOOL MATH CURRICULUM FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL | Pick the Best Math Curriculum for Your Teen
    Today I'm sharing what I have learned about 7 popular math programs for pre-algebra and above in the homeschool world. My daughter will be starting pre-algebra next school year and I want to pick something that will work well for her as she finished up her middle school math and enters into high school.
    Since I was researching for myself, I decided to share all that I learned with you! Hopefully it's helpful to all of you who are trying to figure this out for your own homeschools.

    We just started using Denision Math about a month ago. So far, I really like the way he teaches and the set-up. I like that he works out every problem with them, that it has a book that the problems need to be written down in and he teaches them to circle their answers. Other online math, my kids have a tendency to try to solve all the problems in their head while Denision has you get in the habit of writing everything down. We used Nicole the Math Lady with Saxon the last two years. Although she does a great job explaining the lessons and I love the automatic grading, the lessons were long, and my kids complained about it. We did Teaching Texbooks for two years prior to Saxon, and I didn't feel they were retaining what they learned

      Hi! So, if you want to let me know exactly what you want an update on, I’d be happy to do it. But I’m going to assume on Thinkwell Math since that’s what my daughter picked. She has been doing it about 3 weeks at this point. It’s going fine :) She hasn’t said much about it and I haven’t asked because I just want her to get used to it. She does have questions that she needs to ask me and so far we have been able to figure out. I guess I do remember some pre-algebra 😊 Or I’m learning along the way. I feel like the amount of work is good and she might be struggling a bit just because we moved from Teaching Textbooks that is known for being less advanced. I will be creating a full review after she has used it solidly for a while. But we are definitely not there yet.

    I also have a child who dislikes maths. We are using Masterbooks Principles of Mathematics 1 at the moment and so far it is going well. There is an academy course that goes with it. We did the trial lessons and it was very good. The videos were about 10 minutes and covered what was in the text. For some reason my daughter decided not to have the videos. It has saved money and it seems to be fine without videos so far. But maybe for POM 2 we will use the videos. The books are about $60 and the academy course is about $60 so not as expensive as some options. I have also recently found out about Denison Algebra and it looks very good. We have a white board on the wall, and it is our best friend during math. We redo every wrong answer on the board together, and if still not mastered, gave him more examples. For geometry with my daughter, there were no videos, I sat dow with her, we read the lesson together and did the work together or sat down next to her and helped her when II saw she was getting frustrated. To limit her frustration, I told her to not stay more than 2-3 minutes on problem. If she is stuck, I tell her to stop and we do it together, then give her a similar one to do on her own. • @CalmintheChaosHomeschool
      @CalmintheChaosHomeschool  Před 8 měsíci

      Can you clarify what you mean "best with the application"? Do you mean which of these is the easiest to implement? If that is your question, really, there is no best. There is best for your family, your current stage of life, and your child. These things can change from year to year. For example, I'm a mom to 4 kids, and 3 of them tend to need me more one on one for math. With all the other things I am teaching them, I really can't do that. So I need something that will teach my kids math, and mark their work, and I can come along side to help when they get stuck on a question or two... This particular child I am researching for, is my most advanced math student and she does need as much help as my other students. So I need her to be taught, challenged a little bit (but not too much), and have her work marked (because I know that I will not get to regular marking of math work). Hope this helps.

      No… it goes up until at least pre-calculus. But, I choose teaching textbooks for her and I wanted her to have a chance to choose what she thinks would work best for herself in the pre-algebra and up.

    Mr D math offers a returning student and a sibling discount. It's $100 off.

    Denison has been on my radar for a while. Hope really dislikes math. When the time comes we will most likely be giving it a whirl.

    Do you know anything about these math programs? Or, any other people should consider for pre-algebra and up?

      My daughter likes unlock math. I’m thinking either unlock math, mrD or Denison for my son.

      Thanks for sharing! I honestly just heard about unlock math a few days ago. It is definitely on the more expensive end. Do you know of any sales or deals that might have throughout the year?

      @@CalmintheChaosHomeschool They do have some sales throughout the year, but I can't recall when. You might want to check out their referral program if you end up using it. I signed up for it, but I don't have a vlog or blog, etc, so I haven't benefited from it. I like their sibling discount plus their trial and guarantee. You can also switch a student back and forth between any of the courses. The student can also contact them for live math help during their open hours. I like their customer service as well. :)
