I think I'm suffering from gear consolidation syndrome, probably something to do with getting older and not really liking heavy camera bags any more. I bailed all the Nikon DSLR gear recently for the Fuji X Pro3, and gotta say more than happy with its output. But in spite of how good that camera is, I actually find myself using an Olympus OMD EM10 iii more often (£250 in UK with 600 clicks on the shutter), mainly due to the super lightweight outfit with a 14-150 super zoom (not as bad as it sounds), which is incredibly liberating to pack around and frankly, it gets the shot as well as anything I've used. The Fuji is a better camera and it does get used, but mostly for low light or subjects where I particularly want the best IQ i can get. Medium format is an aspiration, for sure, maybe one day for some careful tripod work with landscapes and so forth.

That's a good price but it's still not cheap enough for me, but I know I would love a medium format. My whole collection of camera gear is about $1000 worth. Around the start of the pandemic, used camera gear was really abundant and cheap. I got my Rebel SL1 for under $150, and it had just under 10k shots if I remember correctly, plus it has the option to remove hot pixels. I was watching some reviews last year for medium format film cameras and they capture so much natural color range, so beautiful.

First. regarding the "the #1 camera system", I would think there are 4 #1 camera systems depending on your needs, capabilities, and personality. These are just tools. Second, I just had a bunch of 6x7 drum scans made from negatives taken with my Mamiya RB 67 Pro in the 90's. My D850 images, taken at any ISO, smokes them. On a recent trip, I accidentally took some images at ISO 64 on my D850. Unbelievable. I don't know how you would want anything more and the flexibility is awesome.

      @@gentrygarage main points:
      • Unbeatable image output in the Full Frame league thanks to:
      • Z lens lineup, which is magnificent (S line range)
      • Affordable prices
      • Versatility in lens adaptation.. its sensor stack thickness makes even some Leica M mount lenses very usable
I also have a GFX50R and yes, stills image output beats the full frame competiton, but the D850/Z7 is VERY close/on par when using the right lenses. The Gfx benefits a lot/mainly from the Gf lenses.
But overall I would still score the Nikon Z system higher due to wider field of usability for who it needs (video, sports, landscape). And for non tripod shooters you will always benefit from the faster lens lineup. Fuji will surely bring some faster primes for the Gfx, but I doubt it will have the same wide portfolio as Nikon …

      @artsilva Před 2 lety

I do that as well. For panos, higher res, and even portraits a la brenitzer method. But ultimately, too much time stitching we too many stitching errors or moving objects, huge files with the image layers to remove said errors, limitations on subjects due to above constraints (stitching beach panos with waves is a chore...), and after 10 years, all that led me to save for 2 years for fuji MF (was looking at one of the 50's but the 100s came out, so... anyways, I'm pretty sure that second kidney was not needed...).
All this to say, be careful, stitch enough panos and you'll go my way... ;-)

@@newnastyn As much as I wish I could afford a GFX100S for landscapes, I am doing the stitching thing.
Now I've been stitching for over a decade now, even before I heard of the Breniser Method, [funny how one person is taking credit for a technique that has been done before].
Anyways, with stitching you have to be very selective of your subjects for consistency as well as be very conscience of your overlapping skills, keeping the camera level throughout the pans and select a lens that will be low in distortion.
I'm glad adobe has improved this stitching feature from the old days of doing it manually.

I'm a dinosaur from analogue times and that's why "medium format" is always just a square photo for me, back then a 6x6cm film negative. All photos from the cameras with some kind of rectangular sensor or image result "out of the box" therefore have nothing to do with the classic medium format for me, as I imagine and above all wish. Cameras like this Fujifilm are just normal digital cameras with many megapixels, nothing more. Let's be honest, it was and is this special photographic challenge to creatively fill this square medium format with exciting and artistically appealing image content, that was the special photographic art and the unique point that made this square medium format so special. With this Fujifim camera you have the usual rectangular results, so no particular challenge, just more megapixels for a very high purchase price. @@Whatisright Yeah, still remember that one. That's one thing that most people don't get, FF was chosen as the "standard format" not because of its output quality, but because of its prevalence in the industry since film days. There were (and are) better quality formats, FF just have better balance between performance, size, and price (of the film, and the investment). Of course, until Fujifilm came with their GFXs.

Still gfx medium format is a pretty small MF and it has many drawbacks compared to FF as of today. On the other hand FF has the edge over apsc (about as much as small MF has over FF) but not really any drawback. That's why still is the most versatile sensor size as of now

What’s your opinion on the native lenses? From what I’ve seen they are among the best in regards to technical optical “perfection“.
Is mounting vintage 35mm lenses worthwhile? In a long ago video you mentioned Nikkor lenses mostly covered medium format with their image circle

So you are saying 99.9% of photographers don’t shoot sports, action or wildlife? While I’m sure you know this, it’s worth pointing out that the added weight of the system (mainly lenses) makes it impractical for a lot of run and gun stuff as well. Also, it’s not the best system for video. I agree it’s a great system, but it’s for more of a niche market and much less versatile than full frame.

Short answer, speed. I shoot birds in flight, I need shutter speeds of around 1/2000 and the more frames per second the better. Nikon D850 shoots 7 fps, anything less than that is going to be a real struggle.
