It's Valentines Day weekend - the biggest flower day of the year, with billions sold. But can we cash in on any of that money with our dried flowers? We are opening the roadside stand, promoting ourselves at the mall, and trying to bring in our first local flower sales of the year. But dried flowers might not be popular enough to catch the eye of the average consumer. Stay tuned to find out our grand total.

I think you have to make the dried bouquets bigger than the live ones and not count the stems the same as the live ones because they ARE dried and take up less space thus making them looke puny. I wouldn't pay the same price for the dried bouquets. Put two together so people feel like they're getting a bargain. Or do a buy one get one. And since they're in the same wrappers from last year, they look old and tired.

Or do them for like 15. 20 does feel a little bit steep. But either way this is a really good point from a marketing/sales perspective.

I think they key is to make the bouquets brighter, larger and more intentional looking.
Since some of the vibrancy is lost when dried for many types of flowers I’d try balancing that out with colorful wrapping papers if multiple hues (golden yellow, spring green, pink, etc.) and leaning hard into flowers that are sturdy/ structural looking when dried.
IMHO the dried black eyed Susan’s that were missing petals were not it. Not wild about grasses in with the flowers, but I know people buy bundles of grasses for decor so maybe try that with your grasses?
I also think some of the ideas of selling bunches by type for crafters is really smart and a great way to learn what varieties your customers prefer.
Finally, while I don’t think you can charge the same for the live vs dried bunches, I do think you could charge more for value added ideas like strawflower earrings or other value added items like your Christmas ornaments!
      Good luck

I am wondering about tapping into the crafty crowd and selling your dried flowers in bulk lots for those that want to create arrangements, wreaths, etc. Try places like Etsy etc. Then you can clear out your stock of current dried stuff and make room for your seed starting etc. This year maybe you can try playing around with silica sand to get higher-quality looking dried flowers too. I have been having fun seeing what dries best in that manner (but it wouldn't be easy to dry large batches at once due to expense and mess with silica). Maybe pressed flowers too, some people like embedding them in things. Just some ideas.:)

I think you're right about it not being the RIGHT flowers. Some of them are beautiful still, but some of them are dull & j8st look like "old bouquets" & not necessarily like a put together dried bouquet... esoecially the ones that include things like zinnias & things that aren't normally used for dried bouquets. Not trying to be mean, just giving you feedback!
I also wonder if maybe Valentine's Day just isn't the day for dried flowers, & most people want fresh in Valentine's? Or assume that other people want fresh for gifts.

My issue with dried flowers is the...crunchy (?) and dusty nature of them. It's one reason why your ornaments are a BRILLIANT idea - it protects them and makes them usable (at least to me!). I wonder if there is a way to translate that into a Valentine's aesthetic?

I'll be totally honest, as a grower of flowers living in a cold climate, I am very uninterested in dried flowers this time of year. I'm craving fresh things in the middle of winter. Have you thought of finding a way to sell bulk dried flowers of certain types and shipping them? I'm much more apt to purchase a large amount of one type of flower to use in a project than I am a bouquet of mixed items. Love watching you guys and you learn each year!

Some difficult reading for you in the comments today. I understand your theory behind charging the same amount for the flowers BUT, you shouldn't ignore the repeated comments from people about perceived value. Everyone thinks that they should cost less or be twice the size. (I agree) This is valuable marketing information. It's better to get something for the flowers, rather than composting them, you have them now so better to get a return on that time. I'm sure you will be more strategic with drying this year. Maybe sell your dried flowers to florists for Valentine's day? I'm sure they can make more Valentine's day themed arrangements and you can sell it to them early and market it as a way they can start prepping for Valentine's day early. They can also incorporate fresh and dried flowers together. I think the customer types on Valentine's day are different from the average customer and therefore the product has to be different. You can also make premade bud vase arrangements and market it as a "just need to buy a single rose and add it to the bouquet"/ "diy your own arrangement and save some money"... Idk, just some suggestions. The dried flowers are gorgeous 😍🥰

Create a HUGE bouquet of bright flowers and leave it next to the green sign. Cars approaching the stand will see them. Put big bunches next to the door. Hang them along the fence. Use up as many bright flowers as you can. You will have more space to move in the spring.
Remind people that you are their favorite flower farm. Get them back into the swing of stopping by.

The issue with the dried flowers is the way they look and the size for the 20$ price tag. Because you have such an abundance of dried flowers taking up space I'm not sure why you could not triple your bouquet size, do straight bunches and lower you price to maybe 10. A lot of the bouquets you had were misshaped and very small looking. This way it would be a little giving back / deal to your customers and they would appreciate it.

    Top notes to comments
    1) Selling dried flowers is the same as selling fresh flowers when it comes to pricing. Each stem has a specific value, and if you want to create a sustainable business then you have to sell them at that correct price. Yes, dried flowers are smaller then fresh. But we don't sell a 16 inch bouquet, we sell a $18 (plus tax) bouquet. Depending on what is used, the size will vary. This point is especially important to understand if you are trying to sell flowers yourself, and leads into
    2) Who is buying these dried flowers? CZcams shares some general details about viewers with creators, so I know that most of you are just like me - women from 30-50. I too hated dried flowers a few years ago. They reminded me of my grandma - she has a disgusting decade old grey dust catcher in her livingroom from the 80s. But the thing about the reemergence of the dried flower trend, is that it isn't for us - the customers for our dried flowers are Gen Z. And they really love the dried flowers! We sell them at the market when we have fresh available, we sell them in bulk in the summer for events, and I suspect we will be able to sell them to florists this coming summer. Just because I know that dried flowers are dead flowers, doesn't mean they aren't still valuable to someone who desires them. And so I stay focused on the fact I don't have to love trends to sell them at what someone is willing to pay.
    3) Colours! Not every colour is available in dried flowers. Specifically - red. Red dried to a brown or a purple tone. Green is also tricky. I would love to make rich red and green bouquets for Christmas. And I would love to have something that will mimic red roses for Valentines day. But more then that, I want to sell a natural undyed product. And so the colours are what they are. Also, the colours that actually have sold the best for us are in a more boho palate of whites, tans, browns. Some of the least visually spectacular bouquets on the camera are actually our best sellers. Brights sell well too, like a purple and orange combo.
    4) Wreaths. To make a small wreath I would need to use amount of flowers that are in 12 bouquets, which would be $240. And that's just flowers, that's not counting all the time to create the actual wreath. Wreaths are beautiful. And if my mom liked them, I'd make one for her. But I can't afford to make them on the farm to sell. Also, Gen Z doesn't want a wreath, they want a small bedside bouquet.
    5) Signs and display. It was raining. I can't place dried flowers out in the rain. I can't place chalk signs in the rain. It's winter, I'm doing my best, lol. But, definitely get on my case about improving signs this spring, because we want to increase the curb appeal of the stand this year!

I don't agree that selling dried flowers is the same as selling fresh in terms of pricing. Cost to grow is not the same as selling price, which is dictated by demand, which is not as great for dried flowers, because you don't have buy them so often. And a showy fresh dahlia sells for more than a fresh bachelor's button or foliage. For me, the dried flowers are the equivalent of foliage, not fresh flowers. If I remember right you started drying because you had bouquets left over that didn't sell, so they were already written-off stock. Charging full fresh price does not seem to take account of market forces. Also, your larger reworked dried bouquets for the mall showed more of the thought and care that you put into your fresh bouquets. Last year's leftovers need the same treatment, they need to be considered as raw materials that need to have value added, otherwise they just remain last year's leftovers. I love the way you create your fresh flower bouquets, and would love to see you create dried bouquets from scratch in the same way, going for colour and texture like you do with your fresh flowers. Back to fresh flowers, have you considered indoor forcing red or pink tulips for Valentine's day? You have the lights and crates already. B.A.R.E Flowers yt channel has some interesting videos on that. And definitely pink or red paper for Valentines.

Except you grew them to sell as live flowers. It's a sunk cost you are trying to recoup. That and it's literally a different product. Prices should always reflect both the tangible and the business costs of the product AND the value your customer would be willing to pay for them. Without both of those, there isn't sustainability from the outset. If it's not worth it to just rearrange the dried flowers without added value (because it IS a lower value product in the eyes of the consumer) or bulk sell to crafters/florists, just make it all compost for future flowers.

Dried flowers are a nice way to survive the winter season. I was looking for a bouquet a month ago. The ones that caught my eye were big and colorful. They looked as close to fresh as possible for dried flowers.... Maybe keep the stand open beyond Valentine's Day and see what might sell. The orange & purple combo was eye catching and those strawflowers are perfect for this application. Perfect! Good luck with your creations! :)

As a custumer who loves both fresh and dried flowers, I can say when, why and which dried flowers I buy,I hope this can be helpfull. I mostly buy dried flowers in the autumn, because feel like that is natural time for them to shine, and they look well with other autumn decor. I buy bunches of individual types od flowers, and then I make buqueys and wreaths by my own, because this way I can get the exact colors and style I am after.Already made dried buqueys are often to skinny, small and im random colors. I never buy dried flowers on occassion for someone, because I feel they are not every one favorites,I use them for home decor.Good luck with your business❤

I love the brown paper in the summertime. It doesn’t compete with the colorful flowers. But, for Valentines Day and Mothers Day you should really consider a more appealing and colorful wrapper. The brown wrappers cover up the colors and don’t add any pizzazz. Even just white would help. Since you have so many flowers and are getting ready to grow more, perhaps you can branch out into other uses? I like the Etsy/craft idea someone mentioned. Ornaments/Resin/Coasters would be a possibility. Some wilder ideas might be to used crushed petals to make wallpaper, similar to sea grass wallpaper. There used to be someone here in the states that made lampshades with dried flowers pressed into the handmade paper. I think she retired and had no one to continue her business. I could put you in touch. Also, dried flowers pressed between 2 pieces of glass to make something similar to stained glass might be fun and decorative. I’m imagining petals arranged in hearts and swirls. I really want you to succeed with the dried flowers! Hugs!

I have an idea??? How about when your tulips come in blend some fresh with the dried. It will create a fresh spin! Right now what's trending is vintage, boho and garden styles and shabby chic. Can you imagine doing a boho style with your dried whites and creams, than add in fresh white tulips!!! Maybe a lace tied around the paper?? It will add a romantic charm as well. Your colored dried ones, just add the same colored tulips in them. Makes a country garden theme. Pinks and white shabby chic theme. And just think of the ones you can do!!! You already have head start on the ones you have already made up. Make up more dried and just add the tulips in. Make up some all the same colors thank just add same fresh tulip in! Contrast textures will be appealing and unique compared to the traditional flower arrangements. Even as your summer flowers and greenery come in for summer do some of those for the farmers market! I think they would sell, you have everything you need. It's money to be made. You have tons of inventory!

I love dried flowers to a point. IMHO, I would have gone for quality over quantity and reduced the price (even to $5). You have such a vast inventory, but are all those dried flowers really worth saving if you can't sell them? Dried flowers have a shelf life and will eventually be tossed. These arrangements are accents that only last a year or so before they become dusty, tired and spent. If you want to go for quantity and reduce your inventory to make room for next year, maybe try selling them by genus and forget making arrangements...the DIY community would probably love it! Have been following your journey and always rooting for you both! (pun intended). Cheers!

Ok was just looking on Pinterest seems like putting the dried flower bouquets in a little glass mason jar (maybe tied with twine or some ribbon) might sell better, looks like a finished item someone can give as a gift whereas the dried flowers in a paper bundle feel a little confusing and unfinished. • @kele1264

I'm so sorry about the disappointing dried flower sale. The brightest colors and the white statice appeal to me. Maybe take some of the bouquets that were squished flat in storage and spruce them up, round them out? Showing them off at the mall was good idea! When I was young, we used tiny ceramic vases for little bouquets of dried flowers. That's the only context I remember them in. Just something to put on a shelf or windowsill. Maybe if you bought the small vases in bulk and made those little bouquets, with a folded tag attached with a brief description of your cut flower business and the approximate season dates? Perhaps not a large profit margin, but something to put your name out there for new customers, and keep your name on regular customers' minds.

And on your website people could sign up for a newsletter. People want to know their farmers so having some communication would be nice.

I think that since hardly anyone came in, the price was to steap and people had no idea what to expect with dried flowers. I would suggest to try an differentiate more from a regular bouket since that is the custom. Because you had loads of it I would have asked 10 dollars so people can see it as an additional gift. And i would have placed bouquets outside, so people have an idea what they would be stopping for and showing its actually a beautiful bouquet.
