I BOUGHT A GMC Envoy XUV: The FAILED Convertible SUV/Truck

  • It took one really good commercial for me to be hooked on the 2004 GMC Envoy XUV and for years I've searched for the right one at the right price. This one was perfect, an okay price, with okay miles, and just broken enough for it to be a fun project (bonus: it's all the common problems). GMC built this convertible SUV/truck to be the only vehicle you needed to own, it was supposed to do anything, go anywhere with it's 4wd, and still get reasonable gas mileage from the 4.2L Inline 6. Instead it was a dud, either the marketing didn't connect with anyone else or the price tag was a show stopper, but they only ended up selling 27,200 units. This brought huge downsides because it has tons of special parts and there is no reason for anyone to make or keep the parts on hand for them. I absolutely love it, so we're going to fix everything and kick it on down the road for the next person to enjoy.

I had a Trailblazer with the Atlas Series 4200 inline 6. The engine was ok, but since it's such a tall engine the front diff sits next to the oil pan and the half shaft runs through the oil pan. When that starts leaking its an s.o.b. to pull it all apart and get it fixed. Just aweful.

I have a Envoy XUV V8 SLT! I had to do the same fixes so contact me if you have any questions. In your scan tool you can get to a screen that shows current actuator values. Either of handles/switches that opens/closes is probably in the open state. This means it won't allow you to activate either because it still thinks its trying to open the door or tailgate. Once those are replaced you can hear it try to move the 3 actuators. They are unfortunately ~$110 each on eBay to replace BUT you can open them up and clean and re-grease the plastic gears. There is a spring that returns the latch to close and worm gear that opens them. Yours are currently stuck open as the spring can't return the latch to closed.

@@MiztahDizastaah so the midgate won't go up if it doesn't recognize that it's in the "closed" position. I believe there is a sensor to determine if it's resting flat or up so thhat you can't actuate the glass when it's down. I had to jump some sensors to troubleshoot my midgate. The rear glass won't go up for the same reason if it doesn't know what position the door is in. The rear glass also won't raise if the roof is forward. You may have to use a Tech 2 or equivalent scan tool to do a roof relearn procedure.

These things are tanks in the winter. Mine only has 92k, but most around my area are trashed by now, usually close to or over 200k, and super rusty and not taken care of, which is sad. I love these vehicles, they're capable, simple, reliable, and tough. There's an Envoy XUV I see driving around my area, and I always stare as I go by, but sadly it's pretty rough, like the rest of them.

I theorized that the car's computer had to know the position of the back glass, so with only a screwdriver, I removed the interior trim panel from the tailgate. Reaching into the recesses of the tailgate, by feel, I found two optical sensors with plastic lenses - about the size of a penny. I wiped them clean, reassembled the trim, and then the tailgate operated normally in all modes.

God I love this thing. I have one of these fully optioned out except for air ride, with the V8, and only 66k miles. Everything works mint on mine, hurts to see the condition of this one. It’s the absolute best all around SUV/truck I could ever imagine owning. Did 3k miles a couple of months ago through the mountains and it ate those miles for breakfast. If you’ve ever seen buy this not that videos.... buy the XUV not a Chevy avalanche

I own a black 2004 Envoy XUV with the Denali package. Chrome everything, chrome perforated grill, touch screen, both headrests have video screens, only 123k miles in 2024. The tailgate & roof have become a nightmare! The key grab anti theft feature is also a nightmare. I had to pay a mechanic to teach me how to repo my truck because OnStar refused to unlock the key grab! I've had to figure out alot of quirks with this thing over the years. Also the condenser leaks- pours- water inside the passenger side behind the glove box and floods the floor when defrost or A/C is on. Thanks for the videos! You're very helpful!

Hey JR, I had a Buick one of those. Great engines but they tend to SLUDGE up, even with routine maintenance. Switch to Full Synthetic and run motor flush for 20 minutes thru it before the change. The VVT gets all weird if there are oil problems and the gage will tell you "reduced power". The oil sludges in the pickup tube and causes problems. With it being 4wd, it is 20 hours labor to drop the oil pan ( the front axle runs thru the pan ) I let a gallon of parts cleaner sit in mine ( drained all the oil first ) for 48 hours , to break up the pickup sludge. Drained it, then put new cleaner in for another 24 hours before I drained it again and put in new Mobile 1 Synthetic oil. Try to use the Stock GM filter as it handles the oil pressure better than all of the others. A Wix filter is second best and STP is third. The trans in these tend to die also. There was a recall where water got in from the dipstick tube seal. Change the fluid often and it should be ok. I really liked my Rainier but had to sell it when I couldn't find a buyer for my other car and couldn't keep both. 16.0 seconds in the 1/4. Not bad for a truck.

Search Studebaker Wagonaire and you'll find a station wagon built from '63-'66, with a retractable roof to allow for carrying tall items. I saw one in Auburn Indiana in the National Auto and Truck Museum, with a refrigerator standing upright in the rear. What a great idea. This could be a feature on a pickup truck shell, both to allow carrying tall objects without removing the shell, and for loading things like motorcycles.

Wait until you see the cost of parts for one of these. I know someone had one. He called it the HUGE MISTAKE. Rear shocks were $1,200 Canadian each. The air suspension was standard on them here, and it was an expensive nightmare. So much for the ownership.
On the engineering front, the made the gate swing the wrong way for left hand drive traffic. As for innovation, the borrowed an idea from the 1965 Ford Country Squire/Country Sedan for the gate and the 1964 Studebaker Wagonaire for the roof and added the midgate from the Avalanche. They just made it so complicated that keeping it all working is a nightmare. My former boss' wife had an Envoy, and the electrical system was a joke. Light bulbs were bought in bulk. It was usual to change turn signal and brake light bulbs every 2-3 months and headlamps every 6 months. The one good thing is that the tailgate glass on yours is less likely to spontaneously shatter in cold weather, unlike the normal Envoy.

I own one of these, best truck I have ever owned. I have the V8 model with 200k miles. With the 4.2, be aware, the oil pressure gauge is not accurate, or even real. The PCM only tells the gauge to reflect what it thinks it should read. Even if the PSI is almost nothing, it will read 40psi. The end gate latches are rebuildable, take em out, clean them, clean contacts, use a non oil based lubricant (graphite), and put it back together. The mid gate regulator is available from autozone and others, pretty easy to replace. Yours is an 05, first year of the power pedals. Fuel filter is in tank with the fuel pump. Would not be surprised if the CEL is for a CPAS, or a VVT.
