- Today’s guest is counterterrorism and intelligence expert, Matthew Levitt.
Matthew is a Fromer-Wexler Fellow at The Washington Institute and the director of its Jeanette and Eli Reinhard Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence. He previously worked as deputy assistant secretary for intelligence and analysis at the U.S. Department of the Treasury and as a counterterrorism intelligence analyst at the FBI.
He has also held fellowships with the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and with the Center for Cyber and Homeland Security at George Washington University. He is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves as a member of the international advisory board for both the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Israel and the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research in Singapore. Matthew serves on the advisory board of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies' Center on Sanctions and Illicit Finance and formerly served on the academic advisory board for the Emirati Center for Strategic Studies and Research.
Matthew’s writings on the Middle East, terrorism, illicit finance and sanctions have appeared in publications including The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Policy.
He is the author of Hamas: Politics, Charity, and Terrorism in the Service of Jihad, Negotiating Under Fire: Preserving Peace Talks in the Face of Terror Attacks, and Hezbollah: The Global Footprint of Lebanon's Party of God. He is also the host of the BREAKING HEZBOLLAH'S GOLDEN RULE podcast.

As a writer, you inspire me as well as educate, and your books are those I have to listen to over and over, and revisit to read after a few months. (I've got all my signed first editions, including a second copy of a shot title-page "Only The Dead," because you're a real hero to this retired Marine--an O-3 with 2ndRecon (PMOS-0277; SMOS-0370; which don't exist anymore) who was on a carrier off Beirut in 1983, and I got to volunteer to be overwatch from a couple clicks off-shore on the pitching/rolling deck of a fuel-barge/launch dispatched from the USS Independence strike force, and park a few .338 Lapua rounds in some kaffiyehs. I still wear my Quantico HOG tooth to this day. Your novels just put me RIGHT back in the action again--I can almost smell the cordite--and I truly need that fix. I'm grateful, brother. I was pawned off on Ground Branch after my first five USMC years, so at THAT point the teams: SEALS + Delta boys became my idols, always. But I was a diver, so it was you Navy boys, all the way, for ME

Hey Jack, I have been listening to your podacasts for a little while, only a few months and like them, you interview a lot of different people and get a lot of different viewpoints. I also have just gotten your first book Terminal List and really like it so far, only read a little so far, but your point I think you make about no accountability at senior levels in the military, or any organization is one I have been saying to a friend of mine who is a vet, retired Army Special Forces and I am a vet also. Which leads me to wonder more about you, I would like someone to do an interview of you. I wonder if you left the Seals right at 20 years because of this issue that you actually saw yourself while you were a Seal Team officer? Or did you just leave because your wife had enough, or maybe you wanted to begin your writing career and felt you had done all you could in the Seals and it was time to move on? I ask cuz I know that investing that much of yourself to get into the Seals, and especially be an officer in the Seals, and then leave right at 20? Anyway, thank you for your service

Jack - it would be great if you would focus your questions on the answers your viewers are seeking. This interview rambled and failed to cover the issue of the terrorist threat presently in the U.S. The key to a good interview is knowing what you need answers to and being deliberate about getting those answers. I spent my career in TV news - so that’s where this recommendation comes from. Perhaps this advice is helpful. Also, to enhance my cred - I’ve been to Thunder Ranch more than a dozen times and I do listen to your channel quite often.
