I'm always amazed by how a skilled person can take something most of us would call junk and create a vision of what it could be and show it the love it deserves to create an absolute masterpiece. It's a functional piece of art.
There are 2 things I really love about your work. First is the killer designs you come up with and second the finished products are absolutely beautiful. I would collect your work anytime. Very well done.
Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night czcams.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.
Never before have i seen ANY knife/cleaver video with so many comments from this many different languages. FINE Deadly Beauty is Universally Recognized.
As far as i am concerned, you did a good job by quenching the steel "although it did not need it"! Leaf spring steel is already hardened. I must say that you made a beautifully hand crafted blade. Thank you.
This technique is cool! it makes me think of a novel titled "Dies The Fire" by S.M. Stirling where some strange "supernatural" change in the natural law like electricity and thermodynamics without killing us which puts us back to medieval times because electricity can't power electronics or electric lights, nuclear fission beomes nuclear fizzle, and most importantly gunpowder won't burn fast enough to propel a bullet. They had to fashion bows and arrows, crossbows and swords and one source of spring steel available was leaf springs from all the abandoned cars on the highways.Pretty cool novel, or trilogy actually if you like science fiction. That is one stunning piece of workmanship! Beautiful!
A truly elegant design! Well done! A work of art! I don't understand your tempering process, though. Could you explain? The handfull of knives I've made, I've annealed the high carbon steel by heating to red, then cooling slowly in insulating ashes. Then I shaped the knife. When it was shaped, I heated it again to a dull red and quenched it in oil. This made the steel enormously hard, but brittle. I cleaned the blade so that I could see any color changes, then heated the blade gradualy in an oven untill it turned a straw color. This drew some of the temper but left it hard enough to hold a keen edge. Then, to draw more temper out of the back of the blade, to make it resilient like spring steel, I took a torch and carefully heated the spine of the blade until it turned a peacock blue--being careful not to let the heat run into the straw color of the edge. This is the only method I know. It works for simple high carbon steels. I know nothing about heat treating other types of steel. Is the steel in a truck spring a steel that requires a different process? I would like to know, as I have a project in mind for which a truck spring would be the ideal size and thickness. Were you able to--due to its thickness--work it to shape without affecting the original temper? What was the tempering process in the fire? Not red hot, I assume?
now we're talkin' - the absolute best cleavers I saw when working across the Caribbean & Central America decades ago were made out of scrap truck leaf springs

👍👌🔥 Impressive skills and craftsmanship! Creating a chopper knife from a truck leaf spring is not an easy task, but the end result is a true work of art. The attention to detail and precision in the process is admirable. Thank you for sharing this amazing video!
Very cool project. I've been wanting to do a project like that for a few years now. I'd probably use a thinner leaf spring though. @7:30, that's the part that I HATE doing.
