It’s sad seeing a panther platform rust out. Happened to my dads 04 Vic, rusted out. We miss the car. If it didn’t rust I’ll still be driving it. Thank you for the great video & giving me great memories.

Great vid sir. It does suck seeing old crown vics rust away. Glad I live in da south. My old 99 crown vic runs great and no rust issues. 170,000 miles and going strong. Daily driver and hope to be for years to come. Always like to see these old vics being repaired...helps me keep mine on the road!

Thanks Rich great job mate, glad it was a smooth repair for you and very well explained for any who have to tackle the job themselves. At least the Fire Station will be able to use it again for a while. Thanks Mate appreciate the videos as always.

Great video! You're the only one who explains how each part comes off and how to adjust the cable at the end. I wish you did this video last year when I helped my friend's Grandpa fix the shift cable on his '07 Grand Marquis. Took me extra time to figure out how everything came apart and some playing around till I was able to get the needle lined up on the dashboard.

  • @michaelchan8915

HA!!! We just had a Grand Marquis that came in on the hook as a no-start for this very issue! When we got the car pushed into the bay for the tech to diagnose, by the time he managed to get the car to start, the car moved forward while he was standing in front of it, pinning him by his legs to his toolbox (because it was in gear from the cable being broken and hence the no-start)! I never saw almost everyone in the shop run that quickly to the car to kill the engine, the way I did that day! Thankfully the tech wasn't hurt too badly. Ford should definitely issue a safety recall for this.

This bracket really needs to be aluminum... Every Panther up North WILL experience this issue. It's not a matter of if, but when.

Rich, I wish that my 2010 Town Car was as rusty underneath. I'm in Central New York state, where I think that the plow jockeys get a bonus for spreading salt in the winter. I've tried fluid film, but it's gone in 2-3 months. Electronic cathodic rust protection seems to slow the rust down. Surface shield seems to work the best, and is now available in bulk form. You need to try Free All penetrant. It's expensive, but you use it sparingly. Dissolves rust and lubricates.

If anyone reads this, save yourself the time. Using an impact to remove that nut.
As my arm is bent and the neutral safety switch won't clear it. My car had been down for a month now.
Don't even try to loosen that nut with hand tools. You're going to bend it.

Thanks for the video on how to setup the cable properly. I have the same car 2009 P71. I manually moved the shift lever forward into gear so I could rotate the driveshaft to remove the bolts for a pinion seal job. I didn’t remove anything just moved it forward and now the shifter in the car will go into gear pulling the gear shift down but it will not go back up, when I try to bring the shifter back up to N, R or P the shifter in the car is completely sloppy. Must go back under car to manually put in park. Any ideas? I didn’t hear anything break. I checked the cable and it will pull forward into gear but not push back into park.

Does this issue keep the vehicle from engaging in over drive? Mine is somewhat loose no where near what I see in the video but my overdrive has been flashing on and off ever since a 02 sensor got pulled on the wrong way . I got under and fiddled with this cable and it wasn’t too loose to be concerned but enough to ask a question or two for sure

I had a 2007 CVPI (Ex Ontario Provincial Police) about 7 or 8 years ago, that was not a patrol vehicle, so it had super low hours (less than 1000), and ran great. The paint job, however, was bad, with quarter size rust spots all over the roof (was a slick roof unit, so no light bar), and rust under the doors. Too bad, it ran great. Sold it after a couple of years. Rust is evil!

Close : 2008 was the last model year for retail sales.
Afrer that (2009-2011), it was Fleet-only
That said : Even though it was Fleet-only, they still sold the Crown Vic LX and the "base" trim for rental and government fleets. During 09-11, the Feds bought TONS of Crown Vics, and then around 2016-2017 you started to see tons of them getting dumped when they hit their 5 year lifecycle. Those 5-year ones were super clean. Now you're starting to see the 10-year lifecycle ones, and those are a bit rougher.
Even up until a few years ago, you'd still see what I always called the "Uncle Sam Trim" popping up on Autotrader, which was : White exterior, chrome trim, full wheel covers, the "civilian" plush bench seats front/rear, and the CD Player head unit with a vacuum florescent display (instead of the AM/FM only one with a backlit LCD on the PoPo cars)
Those "Uncle Sam Trim" ones usually demanded a premium, and these days they don't seem to pop up much anymore, or if they do they have a crapload of idle hours
