Something's wrong with the Flagrant Podcast

  • In this podcast review I'm pointing out the main issue with the Flagrant podcast which is the lack of push back against the lead contributor Andrew Schulz. I've got a few clips from episodes with Whitney Cummings, Shane Gillis and Logan Paul to help back up my point. Ofcourse this is all just my opinion :)

He gaslit her. He’s a narcissist. As I began to explore the comedy podcast world, it’s blown my mind the last year as Ive seen more of Andrew just how horrible he is in plain sight and people in general will douche on the people he fucks with more than him. Like the Steiny thing. Legit got dicked on by Andrew but Andrew has the bigger following so people ignored reason and sided with him. I’ve never seen that Whitney Cummings pod but god damn that was brutal and like she said, she definitely shouldn’t go back in that trap house again. And holy shit Shane was visibly angry about their bullshit. How anybody wants to continue to fuel Schultz’ career by watching this shit is beyond me.

To me, it's an ego problem. The very first time I saw the new studio I felt weird, all previous studios had this humble 'hanging out with friends' vibe. Nobody took themselves too seriously and that was the best part, in fact the reason why I watched the show. Now Andrew takes himself too seriously, his "psychoanalysis" is the truth and you're being defensive if you're denying it. Andrew holds Patrice O'Neal in high regards, but I feel like Patrice would roast and dismantle Andrew's ego if he was here right now.

Schulz got propped up by some other podcasters and comedians, and thinks he is better than he really is because he became famous too early. It's not quite Brandon Schaub levels of bad, but his talent-to-fame ratio isn't good and this is the result.
He needs to grow as a comic. He needs to go through the gauntlet. If he popped off 5 years after he did he would be absolutely unstoppable. But sadly, he cut the line and now we get insecurity, ego, and anti-funny.

    | known of Andrew since mtv guy code. saw him advance thru the alley oop from Charlamagne. He is funny. as always, a few things are happening at the same time but imho the main bits are these...
as commonly happens, Andrew is trapped between his persona and who he actually is at the moment. that's the subtext of whats happening in most of his worst moments and especially in the Whitney ep. via both of them, they are(were?) friends. he knows that she knows. she saw the oddish semi-inappropriate vibe he was on & tolerated it for a bit, tried to pivot, but ultimately then countered with quips that we caught & some that were just for him and some combination of his admitted crippling insecurities flared and he locked in on trying to make her cry. as one does.
As for the pod itself, if we assume wat the pod has turned into is peak trolling and it’s an iykyk nod and wink to the fans whove seen all iterations of the pod and "get it", then the reality is that this comes at the expense of the funny. the pod is objectively no where near as funny as it was or as it could be. If the objective is money and success, then there's no issue, but once the funny is diminished, the clock has started.

I think that might be different to watching people with downs dancing and making fun of them for it. He genuinely seemed annoyed. Even Mark, quietly said sorry after so I think they also thought he was serious. But I could be wrong.

You missed the point. Shane said it’s okay for him to make fun of HIMSELF in that way, a man who looks goofy in nature and doesn’t actually have Down syndrome. But it’s not cool when you start pulling up videos of people who ACTUALLY have down syndrome to be mean. That’s where the line was drawn for him.

I think you're right in that, for the most part they dropped the ball a few times with a handful of guests (typically by trying to go for/control a different tone than the guest is comfortable with). As well as, more often than not they try to bring out the best of their guests which can just come across as them pandering - trying to be a good PR machine for the guests; esp ones that are controversial in that moment - theres an argument there in that this is probably to attract more controversial figures in the future at some expense of their authenticity.
That being said, they are an entertaining listen, the group dynamic does shine: sharing fun stories, quips and energy but this shows at its best when it's just them - I think this sentiment also often reflects in the comments

I hate when comics say "It's comedy" for mocking someone, or making jokes about deaths...
Like find some other way to be funny, be a human. If you are making fun of people with down syndrome, and people say it's awful, why are they in the wrong for not laughing at the your morbid jokes.
Bill Burr is my GOAT, he attacks groups with his comedy, but never dead and disabled people.
(Yall should find a clip from couple of years ago when someone made a good joke about Andrew's mom and dude went nuts)

Dude everytime I see the Whitney episode I just think that Andrew was fighting with his wife or Whitney was reminding him of his mom that he just wasn’t able to let her talk about anything that he didn’t lead the conversation into. It was like he lost control with the women in his life so he felt the need to control her that episode. That or the adderall withdrawals were hitting

I remember when he hopped on bad friends, and it was a good episode, but he told rudy to make fun of him even though she didn't want to and when she did he just shat on her and it was still kinda funny at first but he then kept throwing shade and remarks at her as the podcast continued despite obviously having her go quiet from the start, he would talk bad about her and who she is to the guys without even looking at her. I had considered him funny but that was so weird and it made me lose some respect for him
