    Bear in mind this is a comparison against an anti-glare screen protector, it's not the same as the official etched glass used on the 1TB Steam Deck models. This video serves to prove that even a gloss screen with a matte screen protector is still beneficial and that the official etched 1TB models will give even better image clarity.
    I'll try to contact Valve to see if they want to provide a 1TB model for us to repeat this test with but I couldn't justify purchasing 2 Steam Decks!

    I own the steam deck limited edition OLED with etched glass and the standard OLED without etched glass. And I can tell you, it is NOT the same as using an antiglare screen protector. The etched glass OLED is much more pleasing to my eye than without. In a dark room you can hardly tell them apart. There is no loss in image quality like you get when you use a screen protector with a matte finish. I bought both versions of the OLED steam decks because I was concerned about the image quality taking a hit. Now, I’m sending back the standard OLED, and keeping the limited edition. It is glorious.

      Another thing to for etched glass owners. You can adjust the color calibration and just bumping it two clicks towards native (under display settings) I found I get much more of a pop while not over saturating the image on my 1tb. The 512 screen does provide a nice image. But the ambient lights passing by are easily distracting. I find myself using my steam deck on the go and no so much at home.

    matte screen protector is not quite the same, because the etched surface is further away from the pixels, it will blur the image more.
    the native etched screen does not blur the pixels at all, you can still take a macro shot of individual sub pixels in perfect rectangle.

      correct. Jsaux does not claim its an etched screen protector because its not and its clearly way more aggressive than the etched glass on a deck... i can see what he is doing, its somewhat informative to show the differences but its very exaggerated because the etching is nowhere near that level of diffuse... kinda doing valve a little dirty completely by accident but also putting a label on the screen protector that isn't representative of what it is.

    The reason it's such a heated argument is because both options are equally viable for different reasons. I think the most important distinction I don't see mentioned often is that the etched glass surface may be more prone to scratches (see JerryRig's scratch test). That said, if you own ANY of these new OLED models, you're probably gonna have a great time. :)

      Yeah, I went with the 512gb version BECAUSE it was glossy. I have always hated matte screens. It looks awful to me. It flattens the image and makes it lose so much of its believability and immersiveness.
      That said, I think Valve's etched screen is not nearly as aggressive as most matte PC monitors, for example, and looks much better.
      I'm fine with there being options for different tastes. I just hope PC gaming doesn't go back to the dark ages where all PC displays were matte and looked horrible. There should be both glossy and matte options to cater to different preferences.

    with respect, you cant throw a anti glare screen protector on a glossy steam deck and say that is going to be the experience you get from the etched glass, there is a very specific process to creating the etched glass involving acids which apply certain grains to the screen and its that which diffuses the light. You are calling it an Etched anti glare screen protector but jsaux does not call it an etched anti glare screen protector because its not etched... its a matte coating. I can tell you now, this is not the same experience you get with the Etched glass OLED deck because i have one, this screen protector is far more aggressive and may be contributing to the softer image. Thats not me just defending the etched glass because i have one, but its an important distinction to make, this gives a wrong impression of what the etched glass may look like and to me it looks way more aggressive, you can still see reflections quite well in the etched glass but the matte effect of the protector is way more aggressive.

    • @128KB
      @128KB  Před 6 měsíci +10

      100%, good point regarding the etched Vs coating, I hadn't actually considered that. I should have clarified that in the video.
      I wasn't trying to say it's exactly the same as the higher tier etched as it is just a screen protector, this was more to say how good the anti-glare is and how I didn't realise how good it was even with a screen protector! If anything this test shows the official etched glass will be much better again.
      Sadly, valve hasn't provided us with samples to do this test with the official etched and I couldn't afford or justify purchasing two steam decks to test this with the official etched!

    A glossy protector will totally change the etched glass to look glossy. I put one on my etched glass display and there's no way you would ever be able to tell it wasn't originally glossy by looking at it. It's pretty cool to watch it change from matte to glossy right before your eyes when applying it.

    • @IceBlueLugia
      @IceBlueLugia Před 6 měsíci +2

      Yes, it makes it glossy. What he’s saying is that it doesn’t change the fact that the etched panel underneath it still diffuses light more so the screen will still have the same decreased clarity as that etched panel but reflective instead

    • @cyberedge881
      @cyberedge881 Před 4 měsíci

      That works on the etched screen of the Steam Deck, but it doesn't work on most matte PC monitors. I've tried. I usually have to mod those by removing the matte film, or by polishing the whole thing out the way you would a car paint job. I haven't seen other people use that method. But I've done multiple displays that way.
      The etched screen of the Steam Deck is a different method and isn't as aggressive. This is why you can apply a screen protector over the top.

    I ended up grabbing the LE OLED and it’s been fantastic. Easily the best screen I’ve ever seen in a handheld. I had the glossy screen on my lcd model and was always annoyed by seeing my farce in every game I played. And also the light in my room would reflect off my glasses down to the screen and back to me which made it impossible to see parts of the screen. Etched glass is really hard to do without it having an effect on the image as well. Apple had to develop a nano-texturing for their pro level monitor and that's even a $1000 option. With a portable device though, there's rarely a time that you can't control the light (and angle) that hits the screen. The only exception is outdoor in the sunshine but how many of us are really doing that.

    Thanks for your great video! I honestly found your examples and opinion on the gloss and etched differnces the most helpful on CZcams I've seen so far. I had bought the 512gb OLED because there were such strong opinions out there that the etched would absolutely ruin the viewing experience. But now that I have it, I regret it since the reflections are so harsh, even in a dark room if there is even one small light behind me that happens to catch the screen, there is a sharp reflection of it. I was in the process of returning my 512 oled back to Valve for the 1tb, but I think I'll pick up that screen protector instead - I already have a 2tb ssd and prefer the original case design since I like to carry my earbuds and charger.

    My experience with the Limited Edition, the etched glass doesn't matter on dark scenes. On very contrasty stuff like a field of stars you get some haloing from the bright spots diffusing. You see it on white text on a black background. You also notice a bit with black text on pure white background. I definitely prefer the etched glass for daytime gaming.

      @@cyberedge881 It really depends on what you are used to and how much reflections bother you.
      I'm personally used to etched glass/matte screens (my TV is matte, my 2 PC monitors are matte, and the only glossy screens I have is my phone and OLED switch). I know I am losing a bit of clarity but I can't stand seeing reflections of my room and myself in darker areas of the screen. The OLED panel of the Switch is really good but I have immense trouble finding the correct angles to get rid of the reflection when playing in my room with natural daylight, so it's frustrating for me. I find myself obligated to play in almost complete darkness to not be distracted. Curiously it doesn't bother me with other Nintendo handhelds with glossy screens (like the DS and 3DS), I think it's because these screens are smaller. The bigger the screen, the more it bothers me because the reflection is more "irregular".
      But yes if reflections don't bother you then glossy screens are inherently better 🙂

  • @fiorin_rhiri
    @fiorin_rhiri Před 6 měsíci +6

    The issues I've had with the JSAUX screen protector weren't clarity. It was that it introduces these oily artifacts to the screen on bright flat colors.
    Any time you have a bright flat color on the screen, it looks smeared like I stamped my fingerprints on it. The blue and teal skies in a game like Super Mario World just look off. They are not flat like they should be. I do not know however if this was a defect with my screen protector, but I tried applying both that came in the package, both had the same issue despite a bubble/issue-less installation.
    I got both the 512GB and 1TB models to compare them. When comparing the 512 with the JSAUX protector installed, and the 1TB model, the 1TB model doesn't present this problem. Since I play a lot of retro games and a lot of games with bright colors, this bothered me a lot. The anti-glare is also far more effective/aggressive on the JSAUX protector than on the 1TB etched glass. I returned the 512 unit.

    Yea so I'm sitting in front of both the 1TB LE and the 512 Glossy. I bought both to compare (arrived last weekend), which is really the only way to do this comparison validly. No, adding a protector to simulate the experience is not equivalent. Sorry.
    To make a long story very, very short: they look exactly the same indoors under normal lighting, low lighting, or no lighting. Colors, black performance, clarity. Completely the same. The clarity issue the content creator is having is, thus, completely a function of the screen protector itself being an inexpensive (cheap), additional piece. It's not the same as an infused piece of glass and that should be obvious to anyone reading this. Reduced clarity is a problem the real eteched screen does not actually have, making that part of the comparison only marginally helpful at best. The etched screen also does not diffuse light as aggressively as this screen protector (for good or bad). While it absolutely diffused light, it doesn't turn a lap into nothing. Lamp is still there, but demonstrably softer and considerably less distracting.
    I'm fortunate to still have 20/20 vision (confirmed about 3 weeks ago) and in my purcahse I was absolutely looking for (1) lack of crispness in the edges of small text and (2) that lost color richness against bright lights or outside sunshine. I even picked up a 2TB model in anticipation of it simply being a coronation of the glossy panel given how many YT videos confidently say the glossy was a smidge better if not more. I'm sorry but it's just not. They are equal in every way indoors, with etched being easier to see / less distracting outdoors. Basically, outdoors trades a slight (5%? 10%?) amount of color vibrance for almost completely elminating the kinds of detailed reflections and glare that would make you want to reposition just to see better. In my experiences the glossy is never *impossible* to see against glare; it's completely playable but is extremely distracting and at times can be very difficult to see against in the spots where the light is shining agsinst it the brightest. With the eteched, there is just never a time where the background distracts once you start playing and you're just surprised you can see everything regardless of lighting condition. You can absolutely see and make out a bit of what's being reflected if you look hard enough at it on etched, but it's not an issue at all. Completely playability and satisfaction in exchange for a 5%-10% reduction in vibrance? It seems like a no-brainer for mobile gamers that actually play on the go. And again, the vibrance reduction is only when you're outside in sunshine or near bright windows or lights that you can't avoid pointing at you. In those times you get a playable, non-distracting experience...and any other time you get the exact same experience as the glossy in color, clarity, vibrance, and blackness. It's like having an extra feature that only appears when you actually need it.
    That's it.
    The question is whether getting a better experience outdoors / on the go is worth the price premium to you. Because they are 100% equivalent indoors (in both colors and clarity), if your use case is like 80%+ indoors, you can go for the less expensive model and enjoy pocketing the savings or put it towards a 1-2TB SSD replacement. If more travel is in the cards for you than that, it's probably worth the extra $100.

    I have a 1TB OLED. Look great to me. If I compare to a switch oled, it seems, well, more premium but to be fair, the switch OLED display isn’t exactly lacking. Have we reached the stage where we try to determine if something that is brilliant is ever so slightly more or less brilliant than something else that’s comparatively brilliant. Having said that, in a side by side game comparison using Ori, Will of the Wisp, the Etched OLED SD is far superior. Not entirely like for like but it does show how far handheld hardware has come😊

You did valve a bit dirty here, on accident ofcourse - by suggesting this is the experience you will get with the etched glass, its not, the etched glass does not even come close to how aggressive that screen protector is and that may have contributed to your findings on clarity under the macro.
      its a valid video to show what the differences might be but had you owned both decks you would have been able to better inform viewers that the screen protector is different and more aggressive, its also further away from the pixels of the display naturally so will blur just that bit more. • @randomcommenterurl

      correct, he is doing valve a little dirty in this video by presenting a matte screen protector as an ''etched'' screen protector and suggesting that would be the experience you get from the etched deck... its not etched and jsaux does not claim its etched because its not, the screen protector is very clearly way more aggressive at diffusing light than the etched glass which will contribute to diffusing the light coming from the display as well as from outside the display. Its an honest mistake on his part though im sure, its a close enough comparison to see how the etched glass might behave but its an exaggeration of that, most who have the etched glass oled including myself should be able to see that the screen protector in this video is way more aggressive.

    "That's not being washed out, that's just the way the light is being diffused over it at that angle."
    I hate to break it to you but that is basically the definition of being washed out. It's literally just more concentrated in smaller spaces or lesser across a much larger space.
    This is the classic matte vs glossy. Nothing new here. Like with TVs or laptop screens, tablets etc. If you have a reflection problem then a matte display can increase your visual experience greatly, if you don't really have a reflection problem then the matte display will in fact decrease your visual experience to some degree nearly all the time. Some people are more sensitive to this. Personally after say 25+ years of using computing devices with screens I can REALLY notice the difference in quality of matte screens. Especially when you go OLED. It really cuts the edge of some of the benefits of an OLED screen that extra contrast etc. Some people can hardly tell though. Pick what fits for you but it will make a difference. Just keep in mind just because YOU don't see it doesn't mean others.
    A good example of this is soap opera effect and motion interpolation artifacts on TVs. Some people don't notice it at all, but for others (like me) it drives us crazy. If my tv goes into a different mode with those settings I instantly see it but my wife can't really tell the difference.

    How is that screen protector compared to stock matte oled deck?

    • @jinx20001
      @jinx20001 Před 6 měsíci +4

      they are two very different things, the etched glass of the deck is etched glass and the screen protector isn't. etched glass goes through a specific process of acid dipping which applies grains to the glass which enable it to defuse light, the etched glass is a premium option because it no doubt costs more to make. the screen protector is not etched its just a matte film applied to the protector which is far more aggressive at diffusing the light, the etched glass will be more reflective and clear... but will still appear less clear than the gloss deck due to having those grains applied to the display.

    I completely disagree. I prefer glossy over matte finishes on any kind of display. Except perhaps a display for utilitarian purposes that is outside for commercial purposes or something.
    Matte just takes out all of the vibrancy, realism and three dimensional depth. I've modded multiple PC monitors to convert them from matte to glossy. I've also owned countless TVs and even modded a couple of those, which I've never seen anyone else do before. I've always preferred the glossy screens on CRTs, plasmas and most OLEDs. One of the reasons I hated LCDs so much is the fact that they usually had matte screens and looked completely flat and synthetic to me.
    To each their own, of course, and I'm glad there are different options. But glossy all the way for me.

    • @128KB
      @128KB  Před 4 měsíci

      Glossy is totally best overall but the matte can be useful for certain conditions, I myself am now likely to replace this matte protector with a gloss one soon as the clarity is my main issue. I've been playing the Switch with a glossy OLED more recently and going back to this Matte SD OLED I can see the loss in clarity. Vibrancy isn't an issue here really, not noticeable enough to be horrendous at least, although you're right when comparing monitors or TV's etc.
