I just found this video and I think it's really helpful and well put together! For starting out, I'd also recommend a smaller airport with less traffic - the controllers there will have more time for you and may help you through some struggles. At a large, busy airport with dozens of aircraft on the ground and in the air they will probably rather expect you to get your stuff done quickly and won't have time to accommodate tips.
Also at 5:22 it was ATIS G, not metar G. Metar is a weather report independent of ATC. The controller gives ATIS which not only contains weather info but runways in operation etc.

Also for more realism most of us vatsimmers fly real life flights with their callsigns so we cant ‘come up’ with callsign and it adds realism
