Shop Tour Dropping The 32 Roadster Off For Upholstery!!

- Matt's good friend Jim agreed to do the upholstery work on the Delorean roadster and our schedules has aligned to finally take the car to his shop. We did a video a few months ago digging into the old convertible top to see how it was created back in the 1940s. Between Jim and our own efforts we were able to track down the correct top material and headliner. Jim is also a huge Chevrolet guy and has some neat cars and engines stashed in his shop!!

My dad had an Austin-Healy like Jim’s. I was 8 or 9 at the time and I remember riding in in on a summer day with the top down, but, your feet would cook from the heat coming up from the engine and radiate through the trans tunnel and floorboard near it.

What a wealth of information and history this man has. I sure hope some younger guys will learn / apprentice under guys like this and especially learn the history of what men like this can pass on before they are gone.

The thing that amazes me is when Matt and crew puts together a car with the flathead engines, most of the time these cars start as if they have a modern day fuel injected engine.

Matt I went to high school in 63-66 in a sleepy Southern California town of Fallbrook. A gas station guy was always working on his 58 Healey with SBC. Right in front of the gas station was a rail road spur across Main Street. Sometimes At night I’d catch him going home and would do a “wheelie” over the track
I always thought the messagging of the panel for the rear license plate was way too cool on this car. But the forensic study of the top with a headliner is really incredible. Someone spent a lot of thought and money to make this roadster stand out from the crowd.

Oh Man, that is a tour I’ll never forget. I was collecting stuff before I shipped out during VN war. I called my Dad before my first flight to VN (USAF) I told my Dad to sell everything and pay the phone bills jr was getting from my phone calls. Very expensive in the 60’s. Ok I digress, I never sent back to collecting anything. God I wish someone had slapped me and said, don’t sell. Yeah tell that to Dad paying huge phone bills. Yeah Jim owns the car I have panted ever gif 60 years. A beautiful Healey!!!!!
Morning Matt and guys i watch all your videos as well as one other guy Brent at halfasscustom i know he has seen your videos to he commented on a few well he and his wife went on a road trip to Texas from Canada and as he was gone his whole shop burn to the ground he put out a video to show what it looks like now so as one hotroder to another is there and thing you can do to help him out a little he lost a killer ford truck 38 i think and a car he was making it was looking good maybe you could do a pick at his place to help some so thinks for reading love your videos on the flathead stuff and your builds keep up the good work
Just saw your old 39 Ford on an episode of Roadkill. I loved following the story on that car.

Jim is a true Hot Rodder. When he said tits to describe the top material I knew he had to be close to my age. I'm sure in another time we would be fast friends. My heart was thumpin when you were showing Mat your collection. I too have a therapy car it's a Vega with a 450 horse 350 for when I have gloomy days in the shop. Like you Jim the bad day melts away when I'm in it. Thanks for posting Mat loved it.

Morning Matt, your upstairs storage is really looking good, maybe sometime next summer (2024) I will do a road trip to Pa. In my 31 Coupe....you never know, my ex brother in law had a Austin Healy with a Big Block Chevrolet, it was a tube chassis drag car that was built in the 1970's... be safe!!! God Bless!!

The Delorian roadster is stunning. Reminds me of the Winfield roadster now owned by Rob Ida (especially the gas tank treatment cover, not many had that kind of fab work). Not a fender guy, but with the rake and set-up it is perfect on your car and is exactly they way it has to be! Jim's shop, cars, and collection is amazing! Great stuff and thank you. Go Iron Trap, keep moving forward!

I'm imagining the Healey with a guide coat on the steel panels. Kinda knock down the patch work a bit.
Jim could probably fabricate aluminum panels to match the center sections. Imagine the entire car fully polished aluminum.

Was good to see the Healey. I inherited a 60 Healey from my sister and I will always have a soft spot for them.
I worked on making reproduction aluminium panels for A/Healeys prior to retiring after forty plus years as a panel beater here in the UK. It's always a pleasure to see them being used and appreciated.

I had a 59 biscayne ! I had a 62 American Rambler 6cyl with 3 on the tree , 66 Ford 2 door hardtop Fairlane 289 with C4 transmission , 72 Camero , 69 Dodge Dart GT 2 door hardtop 318 , 57 Willys 4x4 station wagon with Super Hurricane , 54 International pickup and 50 Chevy pickup and 84 Chey 3/4 ton 4x4 !

Hey Matt, I always love it when you go to Jim's place, "The Orange Grove" because he loves to show off his toys and you smile like a Cheshire Cat and do a lot of giggling, ha ha. You're like a kid in a toy store, looky mom, I want this, looky mom, I love this! And Steve, he smiles a whole lot, especially around that 62 Biscane.... yeah, it has to be a great time for the both of you guys. I didn't hear or see Mike, is he OK? Or was he left behind to hold down the fort?

how is it that itg has not gained more subscriptions?! awesome channel and it's been stuck at 146k forever.
When your looking for a certain thing/material or what ever it maybe, it's almost impossible to find it. So when you see it and you "THINK" you may use it one day the time to buy it is when you see it. It's just a matter of having a place to store it for later date. I'm a crafter working on many different project's from metal to wood, plastics, paper, cardboard so I tend to have bins full of stuff to use.

Hey Matt, greetings from the UK. Jims a treasure, super knowledgeable. Just a heads up, to get rid of moths use eucalyptus leaves and/or sweet violet flowers (even together), they smell a lot nicer than camphor moth balls!!

Those Healeys are so low! I saw a six cylnder Healey once that had a reverse dent in the hood from hitting the oil pan on a speed bump pushed the engine up into the hood.

The Austin Healey bad ass and this is the type of guy you want doing shit on your car because you can hear how excited he is to do the work
One of my Customers has a Mercedes with a hood liner in the folding top. The outside is smooth and you cant see the hood bow shapes. It folds easily ,even with what looks like a big mattress under the top material. The interior lining sounds similar to the cloth you have got.

Being from the UK originally, that Austin Healey, is my absolute favourite of this episode, and although you like the 'perfectly shitty' look, personally, I would paint the steel parts silver, apart from that, it's perfect, and don't shoot me, but I'd also paint the engine silver, yes, I know, Chevy Orange, but I don't like Orange too well.
Originally that Austin Healey had the A90 Atlantic engine same engine used in smaller trucks the Chevy is a perfect upgrade

Twer it me I would put a mildly built "409" torque monster in the "63". Those scalloped valve covers signal "power" and go fast. Later on in the video I see he has a "409", and it's a "63", he could put that in the 2 dr. with a carter 4 holer and a 4 gear and have period perfect street/drag coupe.

You just "KNOW" instantly when you run into a man to respect. Jim, obviously, is one of those men !!! "Totally shitty" has its place, but, there's lots to learn from this guy !!! Pay attention and learn/grow !!! I'm sure that top he creates is going to be "frosting" on your car !!!
Those Camaro Z28- 302 motors were "factory hot rods" !!! Absolutely NO QUESTION !!! That hydraulic ground 265 horse cam is a great idea. I have a 283 that we had a custom ground 12/18 cam hydraulic ground in a 57 Chevy. Has the great idle sound, runs really strong and needs no periodic adjustment.
When I was a kid, those "padded" custom roadster tops were much more common. They were commonly known as "Carson" tops. Don't know the "origin" of that term but it was what they were know as. As I recall, they didn't fold. They were "lifted" off.
