Imagine going to Japan on Christmas holiday and you want to try some real Japanese food and then everyone just starts eating KFC
LOL
When in Rome, eat KFC 😁
Me who is a fan of kfc: I'll allow it
KFC = authentic Japanese cuisine
Well, KFC for Christmas in Japan is authentically Japanese food.
Japan celebrates Christmas more as a festival of foreign origin instead of a religious (or even secular) holiday. It's not surprising that a clever ad would combine Japan's love of chicken in general with their adoption of Christmas as a fun import.
If you are looking for a comparison:
Christmas in Japan is like Cinco de Mayo or St. Patrick's Day in the United States.
At least saying "Merry Christmas" doesn't offend them.
Dubuya Jay yeah, don’t know why some people get offended by it. Yeah, you might not believe in Jesus, but the phrase ‘merry Christmas’ is used as a greeting, y know, not to force religion on you
@@bigdickpornsuperstar the irish potato famine forced many off the island and the ones who who couldnt leave said 'dont forget where you come from' as a result america has more irish people than ireland.
@@dubuyajay9964 I think it's more that people generally get offended when not saying Merry Christmas. Maybe it's different in New York or something.
Thanks for this interesting video!
But as a Japanese, I just wanted to point out few things in here.
0:00 The bucket on thumbnail is Chinese.首推日 is not a Japanese word.
0:15 KFC in Japan don’t serve alcohol (except for two specific stores in Tokyo, “KFC Bar”). I think that wine and mashed potatoes showed in the TV commercial are just props. On the commercial, they are actually saying that you can get 5 original chickens, 5 W pepper chickens, and 10 nugges for ¥2300(≒$23).
1:26 Mitsubishi is “総合商社” which is pronounced SOGO shosha. Not sogA.
3:36 Japanese people don’t celebrate Christmas as a religious event, but quite few of us definatly enjoy Christmas as a fun activity. It is common for us to adopt foreign country’s religious event as just some fun activity (or as a big commercial opportunity) not realizing that they are religious events, such like Saint Valentine’s day, easter, or halloween.
In addition, in Japan we don’t eat whole chicken in daily meal, and since turkey is kind of uncommon in Japan, and they are too big for Japanese to handle, roasted whole chicken is enough special for us.
It’s kind of disappointing that these misunderstandings are so obvious for us that only if just one Japanese person had checked this before publishing!
Wow, I didn’t meant this to be so long, but I just wanted to correct the misunderstanding! Sorry for my broken english and thanks for reading till here!Overall, I enjoyed this video!! Keep it up:)
Great job explaining! +1
I don't see any broken English. Unless my English is broken. Then it might be
Mitsubishi DOES NOT MAKE MOTORCYCLES! they really messed up in this vid
Wow where I am from. Turkey was so cheap growing up we baked a turkey at least once a month. I think I ate more turkey then chicken. Which is why I always find it strange that people say it so hard to cook. Beef was our special dinner. Or fried chicken.
yes, those white people mess a lot of things
Wait a minute, was that the 'Plastic Love' lady?
Yes.

Mariya Takeuchi!
Nice memory
Yup.
I thought it was kind of weird when I was in Japan too. It also seemed to be more of a couple's thing (like Valentine's Day) instead of a family thing.
Now, my Japanese wife and I live in the US, and we still celebrate Christmas with KFC. People think we're weird but my wife views KFC like a special treat. When I ask her if she wants to order out sushi or KFC, she always picks KFC. I've got no problem with it. It tastes great and it's 5 times cheaper than sushi.
Why’s it gotta be sushi? Racist toward your own wife bro? Wow

Having a romantic dinner at KFC on Christmas Eve. Then going to Love Hotel to spend the long night. Waking up to Christmas morning bliss.
How hillarious! But worth the try to reincarnate as a Japanese in next life.
My husband and I used to watch foreign commercials for fun. There were these unhinged Japanese commercials advertising strawberry shortcakes from 7-11 and buckets of fried chicken from KFC for Christmas. That seemed to be the popular meal of choice for families in Japan around the holidays. We were tickled and confused! Thanks for explaining the whole KFC for Christmas situation 😂
Wait - I knew about the tradition but I didn't know they got wine too. Now I want some KFC wine; I'm just curious.
I’m sorry but the wine is just a prop for the TV commercial. Japanese KFC don’t serve alcohols😢

Am having KFC right now for my christmas eve dinner. And i could not be anymore happier. Merry Christmas y'all.
I remember living in Japan as a kid. Don’t know why my American family decided to go for the hours long wait for Christmas KFC when we coulda just done a standard Christmas meal.

Eating Japanese KFC is on my "bucket" list!
LOL!! Don't expect mashed potatoes. In Japan..they seem to think the appropriate side is tossed salad. UM..no. Not on my "bucket" list..unless I buy my bucket in the US..with extra mashed potatoes. YUM!!
@@budderkupp1282 Learn to read. What does mashed potatoes got anything to do here? We are talking about the chicken, not mashed potatoes. The OP didn't say anything about mashed potatoes and not everyone like them, or need them added to their KFC meal. My cousins hate it even though they ate KFC since they were children.
@@miyako1909 I hate KFC without mashed potatoes. The Japanese KFC meal is boring as hell to me and many others. I wouldn't buy it!! And..what the hell are you talking about..telling me to learn to read. The topic is the KFC tradition in Japan..and how great it is for some. But for others..like me..not so much. BORRRRRRRRRRING!!!!!! Plus..Japan got the idea of serving KFC from Western culture..as a replacement for turkey. In the US we eat turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy..not turkey, salad and gravy. Of course, such a thing is not without precedent. Look at Japanese imperialism, that was finally shut down at the end of WWII. Just ask the former Korean 'Comfort Women'. Or the citizens of Nanjing back then.

Not really.

Third of sales in Japan alone, not worldwide.

Saying "most of Japan doesn't even celebrate Christmas" isn't *exactly* true . While there are few Christians in Japan, the holiday is celebrated on a smaller scale. Christmas Eve, however, is a pretty big holiday, where it's treated a lot like the western Valentine's Day. They do celebrate Valentine's Day as well, but it's more like the American "Sweetest Day" (with a follow-up "White Day" one month later where the boys give gifts to girls).
Theres a Mitsubishi Chemical Plant in my town. Always thought it was weird.
They didn't mention mitsubishi built aircraft that fought us in WWII!!!

Sounds good to me, if the nearest KFC wasn't 50 miles away. If there was one close by I would tell the wife to forget the turkey, I'll just go get a few buckets of Sanders.
My closest of that was open for like 50 years closed down just before COVID. Now they're re opening it attached to a pizza hut and removing the pizza hut diner that has been there for 32 years... No more all you can eat pizza buffets...

First! To the Christmas party.
I’m confused about how you can say they don’t celebrate it and then say they buy KFC for their Christmas parties? Maybe they don’t celebrate the same as Americans and it’s obviously a bigger deal for us but it’s obviously ingrained into their culture now too. Obviously there is no religious connotation to it over there but it’ still seems like it’s a time to decorate eat and spend time with loved ones.

3:42 Calling Shintoism "no religion" isn't exactly correct. Shintoism is a broad term that includes various spiritual beliefs that have to do with spirits, luck, and ways of living. It can be considered a religion, depending on who you ask.
SAMC: Animator they weren’t saying Shinto is the same as no religion, they were just saying at least 50% practices either Shinto or no religion
The more incorrect thing would be that it wasn't mentioned that most of Japan identify as being both Shinto and Buddhist. It's a very common thing.
