Thanks for doing this series, Blackie. When you started emptying your gear onto the table it took me straight back to eight years old cleaning rifles, checking gear, and prepping quickloads with my father the night before opening day. I can still smell the Hoppes No. 9, powder, and "de-scented" hunting gear. Dad passed in 2019 but he instilled in me a love of the outdoors, and I'm so happy to see others out and teaching like this. Please continue this series. Even for me with many years of hunting behind me I'm learning and growing my appreciation for the knowledge you bring to your viewers. Take care and God bless.

Thanks, Blackie! I recently obtained the same gun - a CVA 50 caliber Mountain gun. Looks the same, but it appears to have had a much easier life. I'm not so sure that it has ever been shot. "Made in the USA" is engraved on the barrel. I was told that'd be made back in 1977 to 1979. The Serial Number is in the low 20,000s. thanks again! Jay in the Black Hills of South Dakota

Loved seeing you doing some ML rifle videos. I was a 4-H ML instructor for 30 years, teaching both kids and adult instructors from all over Indiana. The only little piece I didn't go along with was blowing down the barrel. "Never let the muzzle cross anything you don't plan to destroy." Everything else was spot on. I wish we had videos this good to assign as homework. You are the best!

I've got one of those Mountain Rifles. First BP rifle I ever bought. It was 1982 and I bought it used at a gun show in San Angelo. The hammer spring was worn out so replaced that. Decided after a year or two to give it to my father. He lived in VA and hunted the big woods and mountains so I cut the barrel back to 22 inches. Made a heck of a nice carbine. Might also add that they were making those stocks out of Birds Eye maple and I got a pretty nice one. Great rifle. Dad has passed and when he did the guy went to my little brother. He has passed and I have the rifle now. Did I say great rifle?
That rifle will hold all it's shots on a playing card at 50 yards, no problem. That is a 1:66 inch twist and that's fine for round balls, works to stabilizer maxi-balls but not really optimal. It is a ball rifle not a bullet rifle.

I really love Hawken rifles. Super versatile. But lately I have been woods walking with a percussion 28 gauge and I am really starting to love it. EXTREMELY light, compact, and even more versatile. Comes to the shoulder so quick and smooth it’s like magic. It shoots small shot shot very well, up to and including a stack of 5 .36 caliber balls in a single long patch. Shoots a .53 caliber patched round ball so well that I added a rear sight. I completely understand why most fur trade/Indian trade guns were smoothies. My tastes change often, but right now I will be walking with the 28. Good video!

Good afternoon from Syracuse NY brother and you forgot to fire 2 or 3 percussion caps to make sure the muzzleloader will shoot. Blackie… like your show. Just wanted to mention a restoration process for rust. If you remove the barrel from the gun and boil it in water for an hour or so it will convert the rust from red rust to black rust which stops the red rust process and the black rust is easily wiped off the good iron wiped of the iron in one cleaning. Then cover it in KROIL and let it soak overnight which will loosen any remaining debris and is easily wiped away in one more cleaning.
Good luck and enjoy your rifle.
    Regards,
    Mike Z

I recently bought a used CVA Squirrel Rifle. One of the rare, left handed models.
It had been put away dirty so the bore looked very bad.
I thought that I might have to rebarrel it.
But I thought that I might see if it could be salvaged. I had nothing to lose but a little time and elbow grease.
So, I removed the nipple and put a metric screw in its place. Then using a small plastic funnel, I filled the bore with white vinegar and stood the rifle in a corner overnight.
The next day I poured out the rusty vinegar and scrubbed out the bore with hot, soapy water.
Then I worked over the bore with 4/0 steel wool followed by hot soapy water again
Then finally I polished the bore with patches cut from a red 3m metal finishing pad .Then I oiled the bore for storage.
I haven't had time to shoot it yet but I ran a oily patch through it a week ago and it came out clean.
Things are not always as bad as they seem.
    Thanks for all you do.

As I told you in part one that I haven't had my rifle that long when I finally found you some powder it was the substitute powder which was Triple 7 and I bought a mess of it. After I had done that I found out it's not good to use substitute powder in a Flintlock. Now I've seen it done on the everything black powder Channel and it fired off okay but I finally came across some Swiss and some schuetzen black powder and I got what I could afford at the time so when I do get to shoot it I will have black powder real black powder. I've been watching all types of videos about shooting black powder and flintlocks and percussion rifles and I'm glad that I got a Flintlock because caps are a little tight right now and you have explained it the simplest so far. The only thing I can add to this is, I was taught over 40 + yrs ago, if you have time inbetween shots, is to run a brush down the bore. Whether its plastic, brass or another type of brush, do it, for more consistency shot to shot. Now obviously after a shot while hunting, you don't have time to do this, unless you do. It takes alot of the fouling out of the bore for your next load. It works for me, as I've used this for yrs now. An heck yeah, bring on the rifle vids. Thx for the vid Blackie

Blackie , I'm really enjoying this series it's right on the money. One thing that you might tell new shooters is when loading the rifle after powder is in the barrel and the patched ball is being rammed down the bore is to seat the ball tightly on the powder charge. Leave NO air cap between the ball and powder. Serious damage to the gun and shooter can happen.

The whole thing about 50 cal and smaller = 3F powder and larger caliber use 2F powder is a myth! It really comes down to personal preference and the particular muzzleloader. I use 3F in .36 caliber, .775 caliber (10 gauge) and everything in between with excellent results. It ignites easier, fouls less, gives the same punch as 2F using less powder, and I use it to prime the pan as well.

Thanks for the muzzleloader rifle video Blackie! Last year was my first year hunting with one after all these years hunting and I really enjoyed it. Mine is a modern inline muzzleloader but I really would like to get into traditional muzzleloading. I tried casting some muzzleloader bullets with a Lee 50-320-REAL mold but they wouldn't group worth a darn in my CVA Optima v2. I believe the problem is the 1-28 twist barrel. Have you ever tried those in yours? Do you know the twist on that barrel? I believe traditional muzzleloaders have a much slower twist but I'm not sure on that.

My 50 caliber flintlock will shoot six inches high, with a clean barrel, at 100 yards. After the barrel has some fouling, it is dead on at one hundred yards. I don't shoot it at more than 125 yards. This is my personal limit and I believe it could shoot accurately out to 175 to 200 hundred yards. I just won't try to stretch it that far. I have taken deer and antelope with this flintlock using a .490 ball, prelubed patches, and 90 grains of FFF black powder wit FFFF in the pan. Have not shot anything other than black powder and Pyrodex and get less fouling with the Pyrodex, but do love the smell of black powder. Looking forward to more rifle info.

What about getting the right size ball for the bore and using a "wading" likes sheeps wool, to keep the ball and powder from rolling out the barrell when pointed down? Did you run patch through the barrell after each shot or did you let it ride for all 5 shots? Would you reccomend using "peletised" powder in 50 grain incraments?
