    Makes me miss my homeland. Hilo is my hometown before relocating to the Midwest. Always a adventure with my cousins when I was growing up and visiting as an adult. But also love the down time and talking story with my family when I am home.

      Hilo has a wonderful town feel. You are fortunate to have grown up there. The country around Hilo would be a playground for adventurous kids. So much great history in those mountains too.

    As someone who has spent much time on the Big Island, I feel that anyone who goes from Kona to Hilo to Volcano Park in one day is really shorting themselves. You can see it all that way,
    but did you pause long enough to hear the native birds. It is hard to see them, but you can hear them around the Thurston Lava Tube and up the Mauna Lua Road. Did you get to the Green Sand Beaches at South Point? This island is so steeped in art and Hawaiian History that on our first visit, we went to Volcano Park & camped for a week. We hiked all over, went to the coast to watch the eruption, went down to Uncle Robert's place in Kaimu and so much more. If you only have a day, pick an area and dig in. Volcano House used to have their couches arranged so campers could meet hotel guests and hang out. No longer. Sorry to be critical, but I think you missed more than you saw.

  • @DonAndersEasyMoney

    Heading there today.
    Thanks for all of your tips - we were on Kauai last week, Big Island this week, and Maui next week.
    One thing you guys should do a short video on is the wait for rental cars. We waited almost 4 hours to pick up our car from Payless/Avis/Budget on the big island because they’ve consolidated their services and are under staffed.

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide
      @TheHawaiiVacationGuide  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for sharing the information on the wait time. That must have been a poor way to start your trip. We have done short videos on the rental situation, it is ever changing this summer and going into the fall.

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide
      @TheHawaiiVacationGuide  Před 2 lety

      There is a shortage on all the islands this past summer and into next year so prices have been high. Our car was expensive on the Big Island and we booked early as they were sold out the time we arrived. Rates start around $150 a day but depends on the car, time, and island.

    My wife and I are fully vaccinated and a big believer of wearing masks and social distancing. But we have paid and booked everything we need for a maui vacation months in advance for September 14. Should we try to get a refund and if we can go will it even be worth it with all the restrictions?

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide
      @TheHawaiiVacationGuide  Před 2 lety +1

      There are no new restrictions that impact visitors. Big Island Mayor has proposed closing beaches but that hasn't been approved yet. Keep an eye out for changes prior to September. Hospitals are full on the big island.

      @@TheHawaiiVacationGuide As mentioned under "Human history" there was a trail that over looked Pololu Valley from the north side. It exposed the Kohala Ditch in a couple of places but the highlight was where the trail passed behind a tall waterfall - very slippy. The trail's access was through a cow pasture and apparently no one is interested in rebuilding the trail, if even possible. Hawaii Forest & Trail was the commercial operator but we went a couple of time on our own.
