Your momma and I would get along great !! why...anyone who loves a ditch lily and plants them in their yard is a true resourceful gardener. Who appreciates all flowers ! I planted ditch lilies at our new build home over 43 years ago, because I couldn't afford anything, and I loved the wild, natural look of them. I still have some today, along with "refined" plants from the garden center. The history of the ditch lily is amazing, and I want to keep their story alive.🧡🧡🧡
I too have Ditch Lillies in my back border! They were dug up from my childhood home and brought to my yard before we had to sell it… they will forever be known as “Momma’s Lillies”❤️
Good Morning Jenny, how I love your Mimi! She’s an amazing woman with energy to burn 😂. It’s wonderful to hear she and Jackson share such a special relationship. Stay cool, this heatwave is no joke…❤
Thank you Jenny and Mimi for sharing this beautiful new garden with us! I love it!
I love Mimi's new butterfly garden
Wind sculptures are so fun to watch! A little pricey sometimes, but such a treat!
What a sweet garden I would call this a Mimi original. I look forward to updates inspiring me to start another garden. 🦋🐝
Aww, man. Now I NEED a butterfly garden in my yard!
What a fantastic gardening adventure for your Mama! I could tell by your voice how excited everyone is…a sun garden for Mimi! 🇨🇦🌞🇨🇦
Go Mimi! I have had a Monarch Waystation in my yard for many years and it brings me joy. I grow some varieties of milkweed from seeds and source some locally at our nurseries. Cosmos is a great flower for Monarchs too as well as bachelors buttons and so easy to grow from seed. I sow mine in the fall. They also love autumn sedum joy as they migrate in the fall. What a great area she has developed to help the Monarchs. Thanks for sharing her wonderful new garden!
I love the Monarch Waystation idea! I’ve had a certified waystation for about 9 years. Jenny, tell Mimi to plant Meadow Blazingstar (liatris ligulistylis) which at times attract dozens of Monarchs on a single day!! Also, Prairie Moon Nursery is a fabulous online native plant retailer. And they have several types of milkweed, including Whorled Milkweed, another great garden milkweed.
Will do!! Thank you❣️
You are so right! I've planted Liatris ligulistylis beside about four milkweed plants outside my bedroom window. Now there are at least 4 big beautiful Monarchs who just flitter and fly all around my window. They really love that Liatris! I also agree that Prairie Moon Nursery is a good place to order many native plants.
Thats a lovely little garden, and a wonderful project to help the monarchs. Well done, Mimi ! ❤
When I visited Biltmore, they had pots of the balloon flowers. They were covered with monarchs. Good choice.
I LOVE that wind sculpture! Beautiful garden! I am trying to create a butterfly/hummingbird garden too!
Thank you for Sharing your beautiful garden lovely collections happy planting 😎♥🌹🌹
Thanks, Jenny! So enjoyed learning about MiMi's Butterfly Garden!💞
What a fun project!!! I can't wait to see it when the plants grow some and fill in... it will be stunning!!!! I love how Mimi is taking this's and that's and using them to make her garden... wild flowers, unknown plants, mystery seeds!!! I have swamp milkweed-- Asclepias incarnata -- just coming into seed.... I would be honored to send her a pod or two.... NO sprays or chemicals of any kind loving grown in my back yard!!!
I started a wild flower garden that I too threw seeds in a prepared area, it is really beautiful !,
GO Mimi 🎉 looks great 👍
Mimi's new butterfly garden is wonderful! Some plants she may want to consider are parsley, dill and bronze fennel. Caterpillars love them!
Good morning, Jenny☕️ Your mom is a workhorse for sure! I love her whimsical ways🤩 I lost my mom when I was 14 so watching you two working on projects together makes me so happy and envious. Treasure your time together and, have a Blessed Day. 😊🐶
Well done Mimi! Looking forward to updates!
It's beautiful! A terrific master gardener!
What an inspiration! If I were a butterfly, I would be very happy fluttering into Mimi's butterfly garden.
Love it! The butterfly garden is going to be so pretty next summer!! The monarchs and other butterflies love my red cone flowers the most in my garden 😊 I love watching them every day.
I just love this! Bless her!
Hi Jenny, love Mimi's garden, just so natural. We have Swan Plants (Asclepias) in our garden. The Monarch caterpillars love it. Only problem with it is that they eat everything on the plant. Their only predators here that I've seen are wasps so we cover the plants with netting to protect the caterpillars. It's awesome to watch them emerge from their chrysalis and become Monarch butterflies. Thanks for showing us Mimi's sun garden. Jeanette, New Zealand
What a wonderful garden space! I don't know about Monarch butterfly attraction, but my Creekside superbena Pink Cashmere is literally covered in black swallowtail butterflies all day long!
Love Mimi's Garden, so inspiring.
I love Mimi! She is the best!
Interesting how MiMi's Garden is coming together with so many different types of flowers and some will even be surprises! Thank you for sharing!
Loved the video. You and your family are an inspiration. Thanks for sharing. Vicki
Good morning all. Have a great weekend. Mimi's garden is awesome!!
Mimi’s garden looks wonderful and the butterflies will love it.
Thank you for this video! I just love watching yours and a few others. i have learned so much from you. But this weekend i went to a small little master gardener event and they talked about monarch butterflies. So now I've decided creating a waystation next year is on my garden to do list. It's so encouraging to see this video right after I myself just learned about the monarch issues.
This is going to be so much fun for your sweet momma!! I full sun garden!!! On the edge of some shade perfect!! ❤❤
Lovely. I planted Tithonia for the first time this year and I love it. Really pretty in cut flower arrangements too. I also bought that at Hall County GA master gardener spring expo. Has she considered miss huff lantana or mountain mint. I am paranoid about my mountain mint taking over and have it potted. Gorgeous
I Love this garden!!! Southern Seed Exchange has a great native butterfly weed for the south. They are seeds but I am in central AL zone 8A mine have been amazing and have came back for the last 3 years.
This is so sweet. It will look amazing pretty soon. 👍👌😍
Your Momma needs a butterfly house like yours
We have a meadow with natural milkweed but neighbors recently planted a variety called Ice Ballet. I'm fairly certain it is from Proven Winners.
Up north in the Finger Lakes area of New York we have the orange “ditch” lilies as well, we call them tiger lilies ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I’m a Grandma now and I just love to hear stories about Mimi and Jackson doing things together ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Good Morning GWC FAMILY!😊
Good morning!
Drops of Jupiter oregano so pretty 😍
Hi again Jenny, my bronze fennel is covered with swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. I heard Monarchs like fennel as well.
Meant to also say, Joe Pye Weed would be a wonderful addition.
You definitely need some swamp milkweed. That’s what Monarch Butterflies lay their eggs on. I’m sure you can order it on line. It’s a beautiful plant. I live in Illinois so I buy mine from a local nursery.
Swamp milkweed is the preferred milkweed for the monarchs over where I live, St Louis, MO; butterflyweed is the next - they seem to completely ignore for all purposes common milkweed and purple milkweed.
Best plant for butterflies right now in my garden has been Phlox paniculata, regular old garden phlox. Should be available lots of places. If the area near the ditch stays a bit wet, swamp milkweed might do well. I find it dries out in my garden and doesn't frow well unless soil stays moist, but monarchs love it! Best of luck with the butterfly garden, is it looking great!
Joyful butterfly is great for all seeds/plants for monarch butterflies. Balloon milkweed is fun. Asclepius tuberosa or incarnata are great and fast to grow. They are perennial in central Illinois and readily available at our local nurseries. If you want to draw other butterflies, joyful butterfly has many other suggestions for host plants. I grow bronze fennel as a host plant for black swallowtails.
I have some pineapple sage/salvia that blooms late in the summer, bright red. The butterflies love it because it blooms well into fall up until a hard frost. It would do well in that full sun location if she can get her hands on it. I think Mimi is amazing!
Love Mimi!
I have 3 milkweed plants. It looks like the have seed pods on them now. If that is what they are I'll dry and share. I will have to get more. That plant is nick named the tooth ach plant. If Jackson wants to try it it can make your mouth numb. How fun! I am so excited for her!
Absolutely lovely! Great idea! I have grown feverfew before (zone 7 s.w. Virginia) it did really well and came back for me every year.
Hi Jenny! Plant Delights has several varieties of butterfly weed, and you are lucky enough to be able to drive there!
A second for liatris and if there’s a slightly more wet area along that area, Joe pye weed is awesome for necturing monarchs, as well as other butterflies.
Also Eupatorium perfoliatum is excellent. Its common name is Boneset and American Meadows carries I think. It is a magnet for Monarchs.
This was a GREAT video. Inspirational and informative! Love a new and exciting project. Thank you to you and Mimi!
We call them ditch witches. Lol.
Love this !!!thanks v. info.
Love this video ….. !
Our butterflies love pentas plus red yucca might be an interesting accent although the hummingbirds seem to be very protective of the flower spikes.
Good Morning! Love Mimi’s garden
A big Yay to Mimi
Thx for info on the wind structures. I’m on the way to Asheville and making a butterfly garden.
Not the hairy balls Ms.Jenny! 😮😮😮 we heard you chuckle after you said it lol
How wonderful! Mimi is the hero of the property!
Can she grow the milkweed from seed for next year?
Why is there no butterfly bush?
👏👏🥰
My suggestion is to plant spider plants my hummingbirds and all the bees love it. Maybe hostas in the shade area❤
Such a fun garden
Let be everything your mom does❤
Love this! So fun!
How exciting a new garden!!!!!! Where did she get her plant supports? 🌻🦋
Love Mimi's new garden! Seeing her original garden space and talking gardening with her were definite highlights for me at the June Signature Experience. Her energy and enthusiasm along with real grassroots creativity just puts a smile on my face. Having a similar piney space, I've added, moved and tweaked since I've seen her space. Enjoy every minute with your mom. Those years go fast! 🥰
Joe Pye weed is good for Monarchs too.
That is a darling setup of your mom’s little bed. I like her tags, but what kind of a pen is she using to Wright on it. I can’t find one what is permanent. I would like some help on it. And tell your mom how much we love what she is doing.
Hi 👋 Jenny
Good morning GWC. Since Monarchs won't be the only butterflies stopping by your resort how about some bronze fennel, dill, and parsley for the inevitable caterpillars to devour. More power to Mimi for braving the heat and humidity
Great idea! We have so many swallowtails here and I know they would love some parsley 🌿
I second the fennel and dill. I have had to expand my plantings from one to 8 plants in my yard as they can eat their weight in a day it seems. :)
Butterfly Milkweed seeds available at Eden Brothers.
She needs some dill, the monarch caterpillars are always on my dill plants.
Hello from Monarch Mama! Woohoo for milkweed! How can I help?!
I will put her in touch with you!!!!
😍
Go Red Sox (your hat). Have you been up to New England
We have! My souvenir of choice when traveling are baseball caps 😊
Very interesting to learn about this. What time of year do monarchs need to feed on these plants?
It all depends on your location and which generation of Monarchs visits your garden. Historically we don't see Monarchs until late summer/early fall.
...we ADORE Mimi! 🫶 This little oasis is already beautiful! I can't wait 'til next year. 🤗 A good source for native seeds and milkweed plants is Prairie Moon Nursery. They will be a perfect source from which to fill this space. (I think) to be a certified Monarch Waystation, you hafta have 3-4 varieties of milkweed. 👌🦋
👩🏼🌾💚 =^..^=
[MD, now 7a]
(correction: 10 plants total are required -- period. Several varieties will help to prolong the feeding season.) 😉
❤
I would like to know more of the plants needed to call it an officials monarch garden?
Check out this resource for more information 😊 www.monarchwatch.org/waystations/
Is that a Boston Red Sox hat...from cape cod
It is!
Tithonia.
👏🏼❤️
Still disappointed that I never received my fern. 7 months!
