I remembered my Thai school year , I was on the bus with a Myanmar friend going to the north. On the way the bus stopped for gas at night and we both just woke up. My friend asked me where were we and I answered Ayuthaya, then she paused for a minute , looked at me and whispered "Sorry" then we both had bursted out laughing.

The 3 spiked chedis in a row can also be seen in the Mortal Kombat films and games. The reclining Buddha is in the Street Fighter 2 game. The grounds surrounding the head in the tree were in Jean Claude Van Damme's film Kickboxer, during his training sequence. There is also a massive white pyramid temple ten minutes away by tuk tuk, and a toy museum that boasts to have one of the largest action figure collections on earth. I suggest 2 days for Ayutthaya.

Most of the Buddha heads are missing because the Burmese who invaded Ayutthaya were looking for Golden Buddha statues. Apparently, the Thais would cover their golden Buddha statues in plater to hide them from invaders, but the Burmese discovered this. Most golden Buddha statues were looted and melted by the Burmese, but one actually survived and it is on display at Wat Traimit in Bangkok’s Chinatown.
    Golden Buddha information from Wikipedia.
    - The Golden Buddha, officially titled Phra Phuttha Maha Suwanna Patimakon (Thai: พระพุทธมหาสุวรรณปฏิมากร; Sanskrit: Buddhamahāsuvarṇapaṭimākara), commonly known in Thai as Phra Sukhothai Traimit (Thai: พระสุโขทัยไตรมิตร), is a gold Maravijaya Attitude seated Buddharupa statue, with a weight of 5.5 tonnes (5,500 kilograms). It is located in the temple of Wat Traimit, Bangkok, Thailand. At one point in its history the statue was covered with a layer of stucco and coloured glass to conceal its true value, and it remained in this condition for almost 200 years, ending up as what was then a pagoda of minor significance. During relocation of the statue in 1955, the plaster was chipped off and the gold was revealed.
    - The statue is 3 metres (9.8 ft) tall and weighs 5.5 tonnes (5.4 long tons; 6.1 short tons). (According to another account, the statue measures 3.91 meters from base to top, and 3.10 meters across the lap from knee to knee.) It can be disassembled into nine pieces.[7] The statue was housed in a wat in Ayutthaya until the mid 19th century, and its provenance from Ayutthaya excludes the possibility of it having been made after about 1750.

Hi Paddy, To answer your question: The Burmese army stole the Buddha heads when they invaded the old capital of Ayutthaya in about 1767. This was the ultimate insult to the Thais. Legend has it that the head surrounded by tree roots was dropped by a fleeing Burmese soldier. Cheers. Love Ayutthaya!

Historians estimate that by the time of the 17th century there were over 400 temples in Ayutthaya. Most were destroyed when Ayutthaya fell to the Burmese in 1767 with the invading armies blamed for cutting off the heads and arms of many of the Buddha images. But these acts of destruction also left behind one of Thailand’s most iconic images that is reproduced on artwork and postcards. Located by the walls of

I visited Ayutthaya in 1999. It looks so different now. I don't think I had to pay anything to view the temple's. I arrived by train and I remember being ferried across the river in a small boat to get to the town. One of the temple's had a stairway down into the centre where there were murals painted. I must go back again.

Paddy, definitely incredible place to visit. Thank you for putting this together and showing us what Ayutthaya has to offer away from the usual beaches and nightlife. The missing heads from the smaller statues, quite simply, the whole thing is too heavy to pick up and so over the hundreds of years, 'souvenir hunters' would have just taken what they could carry, thus the head.
Entry price of 50baht per site, even if more than Thai price, is very reasonable indeed.
Great video. Hope you're doing well and enjoying your travels. All the very best from a very chilly UK.

Hi. Loving your recent video tour of ayutthaya. Definitely will visit when I can leave London in May. Funny that I'm actually thai born but never been to ayutthaya. I c you mention about the heat of the sun. At least you have the heat and sun. Thanks again for a fabulous tour clip of ayutthaya can't wait 😀 😊.

Would you be so kind to show us more temples that look very similar? And, while your at it, some more hotels and restaurants? That would be invigorating and the ultimate mental stimulation. it would give us a great insight on the integrity of Thailand. Thanks bunches! 555

Great video, I was there back in 2019 but only did a day trip from Bangkok. Might have to go back and stay there a day or two so I can check it out at sunset from the river, awesome view

IMO concerning nature taking over, Ankor Wat is hard to beat. The size of the trees growing on some of the structures is just incredible.

Paddy, thanks for the great suggestions to hire a TukTuk for the day to move around the city and see all the sights. We went to the train station and as per you other suggestion to get an early start, arranged for a 7:45 pickup at our hotel to visit attractions before the heat and the crowds.

This is in top 5 highlights of my trip around Thailand! Highly recommended to go and explore these wonders. A half a day trip from Bangkok is enough. You will get tired because of the heat so don’t think you can do it all day let alone riding around on a bike.
Oh and about the missing heads the tour guide said its because they are easier to steal instead of the whole statue. Seems legit 😅

    • @spikefivefivefive

I thought the Assamese smashed the statues in an attempt to destroy the temples.

Good stuff! Super Vlog. I spent 2 nights in Ayutthaya back in May of 2000. Almost 22 years ago. I think the whole time I was there I only saw 2 other westerners and no Thai tourists. Very empty and quiet.
