Sturgill Simpson threw trad and pop country a major curve when he arrived on the scene with his sophomore album, 'Metamodern Sounds in Country Music' in 2014. His debut a year previous had wonderful idiosyncrasies, with the twangadelic "Turtles All The Way Down," Simpson was plowing a new row for sure. "There's a gateway in our minds that leads somewhere out there, far beyond this plane," he sings, "where reptile aliens made of light, cut you open and pull out all your pain." The transcendence of tripping (on philosophical ideas) was in good hands with Mr S. That was a decade ago, and to celebrate its 10-year anniversary, we had Sturgill explain a few things about "Turtles." Like how he slipped and hit his head on the toilet after jumping from the shower to jot down the song's main idea, and like how Electric Sheep screensaver graphics came to the rescue when it was time to clock the video. The majority of people who consider themselves fans of real music can recall the first time they heard The Beatles. Similarly, I will always recall the first time I heard this album and this song. Still blows my mind to this day. Thank you, Sturgill.

I met Sturgill a couple years ago. He made a visit to Thule AB, Greenland. He blew my mind when I was heading home and he was outside. I said to him "thanks for coming" and he replied by saying my name and said to have a good night.
I’ll be listening to this song for my days to try and make sense of it in my mind. I wrote down the authors of I assume books that I will read. I bought the CD but didn’t know how great it was until I saw this video. No doubt he is the best right now telling us what he thinks.
