When I need to pick up speed on the freeway in my MK6, for instance, to overtake another car, I downshift to generate extra power. When I need to change lanes or pass another vehicle, I prefer to do so swiftly, without lingering.

You can downshift while on throttle, as long as you don't quickly double tap and bang the redline. Even if it's not in Manual mode, D and S mode always downshift when you floor it naturally

Only certain aftermarket software with such settings can let you hit the bapbapbap line in manual mode. My APR TCU Software allows it but overall not a fan of the software for other reasons. You cannot hit the bapbapbap with stock software.

Btw the tcu will not let you overrev the dsg. The "money shift is not possible. It will not let you downshift if the requested gear will be above redline. Same with upshifts. It will not let you shift into a gear putting you below idle speeds. When you "manually shift" what your actrually doing is "requesting" the tcu too do these things. The computer has the control. If it thinks your asking it to do something stupid it can and will say no fuck off😂. Atleast i think it will. Theres no way it lets you overrev. I know it wont let you underrev as ive tried too upshift at 1500rpms before and it wont so. U cannot stall nor blow a dsg...

That’s facts I have Mk6 Golf and I tried to downshift quickly just to see if it will redline and it didn’t. Only went from 5th gear to 4Th but wouldn’t go to 3rd gear unless I slow down more. Samething with upshifting I can change from 1-3 gear at 2000rpm but 4th needs to be Atleast 3500rpm before I can shift

@@ghettouchiha364 assumingly you have a dsg. I didnt know this for along time but you can actrually skip gears (atleast with the 7spd). I did it accidently double clicking the paddles. Say your in 6th you can go straight too 4th by tapping it quickly twice. Im guessing you can prolly do it triple but not alot of situations for that. I typically only downshift up too 3k rpms as these things make plenty of torque specially tuned.

Not only have i not launched my mk7 gli in over but i havent even done a first gear pull in over a year. The gear difference between 1st and 2nd makes for alot less wear and tear on everything. And with mine struggling to even put down power on 2nd gear pulls i mostly do 3rd gear and up pulls. I have a feeling that will pay off in thousands down the line.
Also if you are tuned you may have the option too launch your car with traction control on (stock you have too have it off for a reason; a good reason) launching your car is very hard on it; but launching your car with traction control engaged is even worse. Spinning the wheels while yes wasting power also is protecting your drivetrain. Particularly the axles, lsd/differential and transmission. The lsd in the cars cant even handle the full factory power outputs which is why you need traction control off. The gti/gli had very strong axles but if you repeatedly launch your tuned car with tsc on you are likely too suffer from some serious problems later on. Think about it- youve got all that energy and your trapping it so where does it go? Starts slightly twisting and moving drivetrain components which wears them down then boom. You just launched your car the tires chirped tac kicked in and your axle snapped before the car even moved an inch.

  • @dailydrivensedans4875

I always downshift when i put the throttle down?? It is iffy though obviously dont down shift if your in the higher revs as well duh😂. But downshiftin the dsg is different from a manual. It downshifts smoother when slowing obviously but it can also downshift just a smooth at certain throttle positions. If you can kinda picture preset shift points based on throttle and rpms then you can basically replicate it manually. If your at 2k rpms and 5th gear and want to downshift to 4th youve got too picture how much throttle you would need for the computer too autodownshift. Too much and youll be looking at 3rd gear throttle at 4th gear rpms. So dropping one gear from say 2k to 2300 rpms you need to be barely touching the gas. Too mcuh and you get a really rough slow unpleasant shift( bad for dsg) to little and it might have been expecting too just coast or keep a steady speed and also be bad. Now say your downshifting from 5th at 2k too 3rd at maybe around 3k. Then downshift too 4th like before holding the throttle steady then increase throttle the same proportions (its just like a manual you want too match the rpms but its completely different then a true manual. Much harder too get right as your trying too think like the computer. Idk how to explain this well tbh. It took me a really long time too get the smoothest shifts in my dsg. I still get bad shifts tbh. Its almost like its inconsistent but its not. Theres just some variable somewhere your not noticing. Like ill go full throttle and shortshift at 4k rpms and get a super clean shift but do the same at 5k rpms and get a super rough slow shift. I still dont have it mastered but its because its the computer.

Thanks for your advice/help man, I’ve just bought a 2013 Audi A5 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic. I love it but it’s really taking some getting used to as I’ve never driven a DSG before, thought I’d get the hang of it pretty quickly as I’m a coach driver and drive coaches with automated manual transmissions. I’ve noticed it’s very smooth and fast when driving but sometimes it throws a fit at me when manoeuvring as I like to do my manoeuvres quickly so I’m out of ppl’s way it’s hard to get used to taking things a lot slower to allow the clutch chance to feed in properly. My driveway is also quite difficult to reverse into as there’s 2 trees in the entrance either side so if you don’t position yourself properly you’ll end going up the tree stump the transmission really does not like that and once you upset it takes a while to sort itself out I normally have to shift back into P and hold it there for a few seconds then continue. I need to keep remembering it’s not a torque converter and that it uses 2 clutches.

If it acts up like that somethings wrong. Its not supposed to. I got the same engine and tranny, both on stage 2, basically the dame car just that its an a4, and Im telling you its not supposed to act like that. There is no faster transmission than a dsg. You can try resetting the adaptation of the transmission, it often helps with weird shit like this.
      That goes:
(Car has to be at working temps and completely turned off)
      Get into car
Depress gas pedal fully for about 30s, do NOT LET OFF
      Start ignition (not engine)
Stay on the gas for another 30s or at least as long as you hear the gearbox work under your booty
      Turn off the ignition
Keep the gas pedal depressed for another 30s
      Release pedal.
      Leave car
      Lock
      Unlock
      Start
Testdrive for about 15mins in D(rive) and 15mins in S(port) mode.
If it works buttersmooth after that, youre welcome, I just saved you about 1500 bucks. If it don't, sorry, was worth a try.

@@ThaTraitor Oh no mate alls good that isn’t actually an issue this was from when I literally first got the car and now it’s extremely smooth and it’s fine when manoeuvring it’s because 1. I’ve been getting used to it and 2. It’s learning and adapting to how I drive this is usually how it is with automated manual transmissions which is why the coaches I drive sometimes misbehave and they don’t have a chance to adapt to a certain driver they are being driven differently all the time. The DSG reset is actually likely to be detrimental if performed because you’re essentially telling it to relearn everything.

    • @ThaTraitor
      @ThaTraitor Před 8 měsíci

@@Achannel_o the dsg reset does wonders believe me. If these issues wouldnt have gone away by now I assure you the reset would take care of it. The issue is that the learning process with these dsgs is not overwriting but additive. Meaning the data gets piled and piled until at some point it gets some funky data here and there and starts acting up. The reset clears all that and lets it relearn all adaptation. First thing one must do after buying a dsg car. Glad yours took care of itself in time though.

I do most of my own work but ended up finding a VW TDI specialist about an hour and half away. The dual mass flywheel was starting to chatter a bit so figured I better get that done and ordered a new set of clutches since the trans was out. I was surprised when he told me he doesn't see many DSG clutches go out and acted like it didn't need to be done. I figured since I didn't know how the previous driver took care of it I would replace it and with Hp increase. The Malone trans tune is around 350$ but is crazy worth it. The real reason why not to downshift when accellerating is because, lets say you're in 3rd gear and speeding up, the other clutch has 4th gear in standby (due to DSG software). Downshifting at that moment, makes the other clutch to switch from 4th gear to 2nd gear, which takes a lot of time to do. During that time your revs gone up for 1000rpm or more, creating a huge danger to downshift at that high rpm.
