  • The collaboration between Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke gave birth to one of the greatest films in the history of cinema-2001: A Space Odyssey. But how did this brilliant collaboration come to pass? Well, we begin in New York City…

    Funny that Clarke had to stop Kubrick from bringing Poole back to life, but then he brought him back on the last book, 3001 the final odyssey as protagonist!

    I saw 2001 when it opened. I was quite baffled by the film like many of us. It was simply ahead of it's time. Kubrick had balls to shoot such a "non commercial" film during the late '60s. It eventually made over 10 times it's budget thus being a very profitable film for MGM studios.

    As an afficianado of all things Kubrick, I appreciate this series. We are lucky that Kubrick chose to work in the medium of film, the most complex and expensive, yet subversive and democratic, of mediums. Anyone can now see his amazing body of work, it is not confined to a museum or warehouse.
    Where else can one view stills as photographs with such perfect composition? Kubrick's eye and mind went 'way beyond Clarke's as he threw away the narration and chose a classical soundtrack over that of a Hollywood composer. The movie remains a triumph of the cinema, a film that affects you on an almost wholly visceral level, a science-fiction movie with some goddamn science in it and a stunning testament to the unspoken mystery and beauty of the cosmos.
    Stanley, we are all in your debt.

    Man, all the work in After Effects really shows. It certainly makes for a very interesting video to watch. Just the information about the movie is fascinating no matter how it's presented, but the extra effort put into animation gives it a lot more style.

      +Israel Storey Thanks! This one took an insane amount of work and some effects end up slipping by relatively unnoticed. At 2:44 I actually made the photo that is embedded in the web page 3-dimensional by cutting the people out from the background and painting them out of the background layer and then masking and parenting it to the webpage and tracked around it with a camera... and it is on screen for a few seconds. It was a good learning experience though.

    8:30 "March 8. Fighting hard to stop Stan from bringing Dr. Poole back from the dead." Fast-forward a few decades... and he comes out with 3001. Turned that idea into a whole book of its own, the 4th and final part of his continuity-challenged "series".
    Of course, Frank Poole just ended up speaking and acting and reacting pretty much exactly the same as Haywood Floyd did in the previous 2 books. He was fairly obviously just there to be Clarke's new self-insert, seeing as he couldn't plausibly use Floyd for that purpose anymore.

    @CinemaTyler, It's possible you may be mistaken about the exact location of Kubrick and Clarke's first meeting in April, 1964. It appears that Trader Vic's was then still at the Savoy-Plaza Hotel (perhaps then called the Savoy Hilton), which was just across the street from the Plaza Hotel. Trader Vic's apparently operated in the Savoy-Plaza Hotel until 1965, and then re-opened in the Plaza Hotel's basement in 1965.

    I was really fascinated to learn how concerned Kubrick was regarding his attentiin to the focus of every shot of 2001.
    It has always made me think: Kubrick made 2001 with such attention to detail that no other SF film maker ever had.
    All of Kubrick's movies were insanely well made.
    He redefined what "good" movies were.
    And he movied across so much material from movie to movie.
    He did not cover the same ground again when moving on to his next movie, he learned from one movie to the next, though.
    In this regard, he kind of came close to 2001 with A.I.
    So close, he had to let Speilberg take it over (or, he may may have known he was coming near the end and had better let someone else take over).
    Kubrick was as good as it got to movies...

    It was a difficult collaboration for Clarke. He spent so long on rewrites and revisions that he had to turn down a lot of other work for a few years and eventually got into fairly tight financial circumstances, while Kubrick was so consumed with the pre-production, filming and post-production that he didn't 'sign-off' on Clarke's novel until very, very late in the process. If Clarke had worked with any other director (I believe) much more of Clarke's writing would have been retained in the final version of the film. '2010' is a more faithful version of Clarke's style than '2001'.

    I'm starting to believe it is Hollywood that started all the mean rumors about Kubrick, because of his decamping and move to England. Bitter studio heads and producers started all the myths and gossip about him. I saw another documentary in which he said one of the many reasons he left was he felt like everyone wanted him to fail. Someone would ask him: "Hey, Stanley. How's the new picture coming along?" And he would smile and say "Great!" And they would visibly be annoyed or disappointed to hear it. Apparently they would be jealous or hoping to hear some story that his project was dead.
    If all of this is true, Hollywood must be a terrible place to live and work in. No friends and little support. I could never live there.

    Actually, Kubrick's involvement with Clarke begins with his attempt to get the film rights to "Childhood's End" but failed to do so. Kubrick then got the rights to another science fiction novel, "A Case of Conscience" by James Blish, but failed to get any financial backing for a film.

    oh, i did not know how involved clarke was in the film. its really a very accurate portrayal of the philosophical approach clarke had to SF tropes, overlaid with kubricks intense cinematic style. perfect marriage. clarke could get too rational and talky, taking away from the grandeur, and of course the ONLY way to make a good SF movie is to have a good SF writers ideas act as a control on the less disciplined imagination of a filmmaker. wish they hired more sf writers, maybe wed have something more than 2001 and andromeda strain and contact to point to.

    Hey Tyler, i love your videos on Kubrick. I would be amazed if you would make a video on eyes wide shut. Greetings from Germany

    good video, except: too fast paced and the music is extremely distracting.
    If you want to pass on information both things are not helping.

    Hey man, I'm loving the videos. Are you working on any new short films?

    • @CinemaTyler
      @CinemaTyler  Před 8 lety +2

      +Zach Sutton I really want to. I just got a new lens recently that I'm really excited to try out. I've been thinking of just making a bunch of super short shorts to put some of these interesting concepts I come across into practice.

    Is that a goof at the end? "This is what it looks like today"? It seemed the end-card was supposed to dissolve to an image of Trader Vic's current location.

    • @CinemaTyler
      @CinemaTyler  Před 8 lety +1

      +Geahk Burchill I probably should have explained further-- in 1989, Trump bought the Plaza Hotel and closed Trader Vic's at the objection of many (including former President Nixon) because it was "tacky." What you're looking at in the end card is the location it once was.

    great content! but what's with the music, Arthur c. Clark speech at the end is interesting and rythmic enough not to edit it with this boring stock music.but you know good job anyway, peace.

    Now that you've done an episode on 2 great minds working in unison how about a video about 1 great mind and one jealous twat. I'm speaking of course about Kubrick and Stephen King's contention over "The Shining"

    • @CinemaTyler
      @CinemaTyler  Před 8 lety +7

      +Zeke Payne Hehe, such a shame that Stephen King couldn't recognize the brilliance of the film.

    • @lucasbookfield4000
      @lucasbookfield4000 Před 8 lety

      I used to think the book was worse than the film, but it also has the advantage of focusing on Jack's teaching career, which he takes far more seriously than he does in the film. One student in particular means a great deal to Jack's character, and this was jettisoned in order to tell a more familial story.
