    Never heard of the SnuggleBumms before, it's always interesting to hear you talk about the background information and reasearch you did on these vintage toys on top of the freat restorations you do! I wonder what they had in mind when they designed this little guy. The body is definatly a dino, but the face and expecially the nose? The face sorta reminds me of Alvin and the Chipmunks (the old cartoon not the new animation movies). Regardless it's a really cute little creature and you did a great job! The paintjob looks great and the darker colour gives it more contrast to the colour of the body.

      Thank you so much for your message 😊😊 I'm always surprised by the range of 80s toys. And some of the choices too! The face reminded me of old Disney dwarves! I'm glad you liked the result :)

      n@@RetroGeekCrafts I remember the SnuggleBumms from the commercials I saw when I was a kid in the 80s. I don't remember seeing the pet versions, and my mom wouldn't let me have a SnuggleBumm anyway because she thought they were for babies, they were made by Playskool after all. Which is odd since she let me have Mrs. Potato Head, who was also from Playskool. Ages 3 and up, it said on her box. Ages 3, and UP.🙂

    I think that Lucky feels VERY lucky to have such vibrant colors on them!
    I also think that if we can have a dog-like dinosaur on the Flintstones (Dino, of course), then we can have a dinosaur-like dog. Whatever they truly are, Lucky is a cutie and I'm glad they're looking fresh again.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  Před 2 lety +8

    I had SnuggleBumms growing up. I always called them Giggles, cause when you shook them they would make a giggly noise. I had have no memory of them having pets so this was a crazy find indeed.

  • @WhiteKitsuneKnight
    @WhiteKitsuneKnight Před 2 lety +41

    I'd still consider this a restoration; I know a lot of restoration artists who make the shade of fur or paint they add a little darker to account for the fact it'll fade in time.
    Gorgeous work as always!

    I’ve started restoring my old My Little Ponies thanks to watching you. Being able to fix the things that, as a child, I thought were unfixable has given me a tremendous amount of healing. Also, it’s like I get to play with my old friends again. So, thank you!! ❤️

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  Před 2 lety +5

      That's so great!!! It feels great to rescue the toys, especially if they were important to you growing up. Like you say, it's such a healing process. You can become friends again with the person you were and embrace some of the feelings you had as a child. At least that's how it feels in my case, like I'm "reclaiming" my time alive 😊😊

    Recently I did a good cleanup of my G2 ponies. I don't really have the means to fix the color changes the plastic went through over the years, but they are now all clean and their manes are so soft. Since I took good care of them since I was a kid, I only needed to properly wash it. Thank you so much for all your tips about that, especially for the styling! I never would have guessed the hot water then rolling it around the neck/leg technique by myself!
    Back to this vid though... I like the restoration a lot! But I must admit the toy itself scares me a bit!

    For the faux fur using an xacto knife to cut it helps prevent chopping the fibers (altho you did an impresive job with those scissors lol) also if you ever dont want to order a bunch of fur you can go to a fabric site and order swatches of colors. theyre usually a couple inches wide which would be plenty for the head of a critter! :3

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you so much 😊😊 Ahhh thanks for the tip, I will try the xacto knife for the next one! That's such a great idea about the swatches!! I live quite far from... civilization, so shopping in person is a bit difficult and I am a bit more restricted to what's available online. I will definitely try this!!

  • @MotherLover69
    @MotherLover69 Před 2 lety +10

    Beautifully restored!! Lucky is very lucky to have been found by you! XD also! I'm sure you didn't have much problem with cutting the barcelonetta, but a easier "safer" (to avoid triming the fibers) way to cut it is to use an Xacto knife on the back to only cut the backing. I know there are some people who use thread snippers like you use to cut manes and tails! c: though you were very skillful with those large scissors!!

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  Před 2 lety +3

    Its elements are all so cute, the body, the lil feets, the face mold (idk about the hair, but its the 80s so troll dolls i think were popular so hair may have been a popular trend), but adding them all together was..... definitely a choice..... i find it a little creepy ngl but i absolutely love the process of restoring these neat vintage toys while still respecting the individual toy's journey which is shown by stains and marks and personality by not completely repainting and covering up every single imperfection and getting an in depth background on the toy, especially neat with ones like this

    Your restoration is brilliant as always, glad to see that! Thank you for your videos, still calming and cozy.
    And I kinda wanted to tell a story. I've watched a lot of your videos and all that time wanted to try something like this myself. And I finally had the chance a couple of months ago. I was taking out the garbage bags and saw a ripped off one near the local trash can place (it's a thing where I'm from, I just don't know how it is called)) ) with something familiar in it. I checked and it was the G4 Rarity toy, "the cutiemark magic" one. She lost her accessories, her mane was really tangled and she didn't glow when I pushed the button. I took her home, cleaned, washed and untangled her hair just like you told and did in your videos. It worked perfectly! And more to it: she suddenly started glowing again! It's like she was happy to be clean and loved again and not being in the trash can)
    So... Thank you for the tips and inspiration. For the chance to find and save new toys we'll love like ours. And for the hero-like feeling. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but it meant a lot to me.
    Thank you again. And keep up the good work. :)

    a good tip for faux furs is to cut them with a craft knife only through the backing and not the hair fibres.

    TBH you say the color was lighter, and you darkened it, but I have known from observations of old toys is that the paint color always fades a bit in shades, so you may have made it more close to the original colors.

    Just a tip on cutting fur for the future cut from the back using a sharp exacto knife or box cutter so you don't cut the fur.

      I use faux fur and I’m strictly opposed to the craft knife method. Cutting from the back, use just the tip of the scissors, opening them only far enough to slide a few millimetres at a time. Your thread nipper, if it’s sharp, would also work well, the idea is to keep the blade on the fur side as close to the backing material as possible so that it parts the fur rather than catches up the strands.

      @@theGhostWolfe Yep this is how I was taught to cut fur. Slide your scissors between the fibres cutting only a small bit of the backing at a time. I can't do it with those big bulky scissors though. I use some with a much finer point to them.

    • @theGhostWolfe
      @theGhostWolfe Před 2 lety

      @@tej20001 I generally don’t recommend scissors as big as mine, but they are very sharp and are only used on fabric, so they’re in excellent condition. I just use them out of habit because they’re my “fabric scissors” >.>

    is there a reason you cant use the oxygen stuff with the soap? seems like an extra step to use the soap then soak it, couldnt you soak it then use the toothbrush with soap with the same water? oxyclean is usually marketed as a detergent booster it might even be more effective after soaking.

    I have a puppy who chewed the arms off of a Barbie to the first joint. Is there anyway to repair that?

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  Před 2 lety

      Oh no!! You can try to get replacements from another damaged doll, or you can make them yourself using epoxy putty. I create a little "bone structure" with metal, and then wrap that with milliput and sculpt it. It's not a super easy process but it's quite straightforward. If you use metal inside the arm, it won't break. Good luck!! 😊
