- Driving down the road on a leisurely cruise, and suddenly it all went wrong. Never fear! Triangle Diagnostics is here! We take a hard look at this stall/ no start fault on this fine american automobile, and ultimately come to a diagnosis to get this thing back on the road. I cover relay testing in great detail in this video, and it should equip you with all the information you need to get out there and troubleshoot a power side switched relay circuit with confidence. Thanks for watching!
In all my years of working on cars I've never found a broken wire causing a problem. However, watching you work and diagnose problems like this gives me the confidence and information I need to do it myself should the occasion arise. Thanks!

Just got on to your site 3 years late. Im an instrument tech and found your trouble shooting skills Very Good! Despite what other people say I really liked how you methodically went through the process for the viewer. You Sir will be teaching in a tech college some day.
Good stuff. Great video quality, you keep things moving, and you explain things clearly. And I am glad I am not the only one in the world who breaks those brittle plastic electrical connectors no matter how hard I try not to!
Those covers get me every time 😂. Thanks for supporting my channel.
Got to keep an eye on them the other cars from GM also share that connector buicks olds they just fall of at times to age and heat.
This video is on the MONEY! However one slight error is the wire WE are looking for is the DRK-GRN/WHT wire. It is the wire that was coming from the PCM that was sending the control power to the fuel pump relay and it was one of the wires that was broken in the harness. I couldn't see clearly if there was a black with white or white with black wire. BUT I do know WE were ORIGINALLY looking for the DARK GREEN with WHITE WIRE coming from the PCM. And YOU found it in the clump of broken and rfayed wires. GREAT WORK, EXCELLENT DIAGNOSTICS!
I'm working on a 1999 Chevy Blazer that's having the same issues and MORE. I finally got the vehicle to start but I lost all instrument activity and no radio or a/c control. I don't have access to ANY wiring diagrams. I can't afford them right now. So I rely on you great people. I truly do thank you for ALL your work! Keep up the good work!
Hands down the best video explaining the P0230 and showing how to fix it you ran through every possibility and you ended up finding the problem my hat's off to you sir
I searched high and low for a video that covered 2094 Monte supercharged. Thank you man I had trouble convincing my customer that wiring a switched load control positive from an ignition controlled circuit to the load feed to pump with relay removed was safe. Time limited and money being tight, I thought that was fine for now. I lost his trust once a lil birdie got in his ear his father. Now IHOPe to get him back and smack the 150 labor on him still saving 4to5hundred out the shop he was heading towards. You saved me and thank you. Painter Chris... Aka jimbo
I watched your video & checked the wiring that was near to the serpentine belt. 4 wires were cut. 2 all the way through. Charging battery now. Confident it’ll work! Thank you
Subscribed!!!!! Because...... you saved me a lot of money. I have an 04 impala and I was having the same exact problem. I even had a certified mechanic look at it and told me I needed a new lock cylinder and ignition switch. I watched your video and I checked the wires as you did and bingo!!. I hooked the wires back together and the car started right up. Thank you so much for this video. You are very good at explaining things. I have learned a lot from watching your vids. If it wasn't for you my car would still be sitting and I would be walking back and forth to work. Again thank you, you are the man!!!
Really appreciate thorough diagnostic process. Use of the test light, positive and negative was perfect. Thanx again!!
Very common issue with uk Vauxhalls and Chevrolet. Joe noticed you said to be careful not touch ground with your test light connected to control wire, what I have done with my test light is run a length of heat shrink tubing test light probe leaving the last 10mm exposed. Another great video thanks.Joe
Great tip with the heatshrink. This test light actually came with an insulator installed on the tip, but I intentionally removed it to offer me more protection when using the test light to check for spark on waste spark and distributor ignitions. Nevertheless, someone else may want to do this for sure!
Thank you, fuel system was kicking my butt and this was a great help. If you are ever around Houston I owe you a beer or two. So nice to see a vid by someone who knows what they are talking about.
I had the exact same issue on the same gen Impala. The belt wore through the wiring conduit and chewed through the green/white wire. That car had a 3.4 though. That connector is supposed to be hooked the the brace bar over top of the battery, there's a hole in the underside of it. By the way, you called the green/white wire a white /black when your were taking the conduit off of it but I knew what you meant👍 Keep up the the great work Joe!!
Thanks for watching and sorry about cutting you off in your initial attempt to view. I tend to get in a rush and I have trouble getting what is in my mind out of my mouth sometimes. I am still learning to effectively communicate with all of you without little miscommunications like that. I also stated at one point that pin 87 wasn't used, and that is also incorrect. I'm glad you know what I meant though 😂
Triangle Diagnostics first off thank you for your videos, you have helped me multiple times. I have an 04 impala and I am having the exact same issue. The fuel pump will not kick on. I have no power to the power side of the relay circuit. I haven't checked the wires yet but if I do and the wires are good, can you tell me what else it would be. Had a mechanic take a look and he said I need a new key lock cylinder and ignition switch. Please give me your honest opinion. I have four kids and don't have much money, please help me...
@@therealheavymetal5476 Hi, I was wondering how you made out with your vehicle? Thank you
I've seen more than one person rip the fuel pump out only to find the same result as first started good lesson
Very good diagnostic ,well explained, I'll be following your work, keep it coming Thanks
Glad to hear it Jose, stay tuned!
Big thankyou JOE, for sharing.
Appreciate the narration as you work. Thanks for leaving all the video in. Also good camera work.
I usually watch ScannerDanner and South Main Auto videos. I came across your video and really enjoy this video especially when you were fumbling with the ECM cover. Glad you decided to keep this footage in. So I decided to subscribed. Keep the videos coming.
Both are awesome channels! I'm glad you found me and are enjoying what I have to offer. As for the ECM cover, that thing won the battle that day, but I won the war!
Another one is New Level Auto.Great job!
At 37:11, that "Ah Ha", moment 😄👍. 02 Monte Carlo SS same green with white wire broke. THANKS!!!
Awesome troubleshooting!! Thanks for sharing
Great video! Thanks for taking the time! 👍
Great Video.....Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

That's awesome, thanks so much for your subscription!
excellent video TD thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Good job. Great troubleshooting skill. I have subscribed. Thank for sharing.
Very good teacher -I got a lot of good information from it -Thank you -God Bless
Top notch Mr..ive been racking my brain on my 93 f150 4.9. And find its basically the same ..looked for damage found some but still no go ..after this found another by your break down and whommo..still doing without a scanner sucks....dont know how much would help on a 93 anyways but...gr8 vid
Very good Video. I beiieve this to be my exact problem I will check those wires. Thanks Joe.
GREAT VIDEO
Very nice troubleshooting!! Thanx!
awesome job, I learned a lot from your video
These cars have a list of defects that can cause it to die while driving or not restart.
1. Malfunctioning security system accessed through radio.
2. 50 amp main fuses that blows
3. loose ground wires connected to transmission.
4. Damaged fusible link to alternator.
5 Bad neutral safety switch.
6. Corroded micro relay near fuse box. And more ......
nothing to worry about opening the wiring harness from the ecu, when you have a camera on you- it does happen. Much respect to u.
Thanks for the video its nice to see some one who knows what there talking about the same thing hapened to my car 2002 malibu but i couldn't find any broken wires would liked to have seen you not find a broken wire and do further test for my benifit lol... but glad yours was an easy fix
cool stuff, subscribed!
Forgot to ask, did repairing all those wires also fix the AC clutch code?
Yes sir it did. The AC clutch relay control wire was broken in the same location.
You like the guy the first transformers movie 🎥 great job 👏
Hello. I have a question for you. I have a 2000 Impala that cranks but it does not start. It appears to be the fuel problem because when I sprayed starting fluid it started for a second or so then it died. I don't have the fancy fuel relay adaptor like yours, but I did a test on the fuel relay. Power Feed (Botton Left) is working because my test light turns on. Top left (ground) also works... light turns on. But I can't energize the pin side from the PCM (Top right). Should this happen when the the key is on the "On" or the "Start" position.? I can't get the Botton right pin to work either. It should be the 2nd ground? I think. Botton middle pin does not engage in anything. It goes into an empty hole.
The DRL RlY relay which I don't know what it is has 5 pins and all 5 pins engage when is fully inserted into the relay slot.
Hope you are able to help me.
Thank U for sharing I'm having the same problem and also have the same vehicle. .. Sure am subscribing. .
Christopher Cardoso, thank you so much!
Triangle Diagnostics Great Video My Guy, Hope I Found My Problem Here..
Excellent video thanks👍
Yeah I have an issue with a 2010 Buick Lacerne it’s overheating and burning out the relay for the fuel pump what are your suggestions
Very nice and Thank You!
A master class. Thumbs up.
To open the plastic connector place a shim under each tab and then pry.
this was very helpful ty so much,,, Greg Robbins.......
Excellent!
Yeah thanks Joe buh i really would prefer Mitchell's diagrams to alldata
What was the metallic grinding sound? Alternator bearing?
Awesome I have a 2002 impala 3.4 with the kinda same issues want start but will turn over batt went dead and all this happen all at once everything work perfect beforehand any pointers
Serpentine belt probably broke and cut into harness. You said it at the end.
At 12 min in, I don't see where the relay can be grounded since the 5th contact is not used. I can picture the switch closing when energized from the fuse, but I did not see the ground path for the relay when there is no signal. I might get cleared up by the end of the vid but at 12 min in I don't see it.
Thanks bro, major help...
I have exactly the same issue..and fault code P0231.....Ford Focus Flexifuel 2005
Ive had a customer replace Everything to end up using a fuel pump relay that was rated high enough, it was a 2002 chevy venture with the v6 and it simply needed a 35a fuel pump relay instead of the stock 25a Because the customer did diy repairs and added on lines the original relay was overheating trying to keep up. Started as intermittent fail to start while hot
I have the same P0230 problem and 50% of the time the engine starts and stops immidiatelly. The relay is good the fuse is good. Do you have any guess what could cause only occasionally this problem?
at the end of the video you say white wire with black...i was following the the dark green with black ....?
Just a question. Isn’t 87a the unused pin? 30 and 87 r the load side. Correct?
I picked up on that too. Pretty sure he meant to say 87a instead of 87
Hi love your vidoes and i am learning a lot from you......do you know where i can get a reliable manual with wiring diagrams and stuff
If you are a DIY'er, what would be best for you as far as diagrams would be BBB Industries website. If you are looking for repair information, Alldata DIY is a site you can use, but requires a subscription for whatever vehicle you are servicing. Thanks for watching!
The wire harness connects to the long black bar bracket on the underside there’s a small hole where it snaps in place I have to zip tie mine or it will fall down?
Dealing with this same issue on a 2008 chvey impala ss with the 5.3l. and it's a intermittent problem only when hot. pain in the ass this is turning out to be.
My God. In my day we would have changed the fuel filter right away. No wonder it costs so much in labor to fix my car these days. 12 hours to diagnose
My question, why do the modern fuel injected engines have the computer to control the operation of the fuel injection /fuel pump relay instead of just having the ignition switch operate a relay to switch the heavier current to the fuel pump(s). Does the computer automatically turn the fuel pump(s) on and off while driving, (kind of like an electric cooling fan)? And if so, why? I am working on a 1990 Volvo 760GLE with the 2.8 liter V6 Peugeot engine. It starts up and dies within 3 seconds. This system has 2 separate ground closures from the computer, one to control the fuel injection relay, the other to control the fuel pumps. This car has 2 pumps. I will look around for a relay adapter specific for this style relay. That alone was very helpful. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks.
That would flood on startup, edit; on startup it richens the mixture slightly then leans to where the 02 tells the brain to, otherwise the fuel pump wouldnt know the differnce between idling, part throttle, and wot. Please post some videos on your puegot
I have a 2002 it just started doing this I need help ! Fixing should I replace my purge vale canister ? How should I go into starting repairs??
I don’t want to ask something dumb but how do you guys read the circuit lay out
Whoever put a new battery in forgot to plug that xmas tree connector back into the brace. Not really a GM fault.
It is GM fault. Very bad design to hold the weight. Mine feel out and would not stay. The tree connector is the issue.
What’s the cost for this repair
good video..
I have a 2004 subaru wrx and I’m getting the same code
I have a Envoy Denali 5.3 It starts just fine when cold. When it gets operating temperature it gets hesitant and stopping at lights tge rpm is wavering till it finally stops maybe 5 to 10 min driving. Wont start till cold again.
Check out your fuel pump relay and try replacing it with one thats 5a more, if its anything like the malibus and venture they share wirings between the oil sensor and fuel pump relay. After I fixed the relay on a customer's venture the oil sensor quit sending codes, when I checked the other fuses the cooling system fuses were blown too so it wouldnt hurt checking those too. 2000 era by chance?
lotta work done in a hour ..
I'd want 4hr for this repair
I notice that my harness would not stay in the right place. Used zip ties to hold it up out of the belts. Very poor design by GM to hold the harness.
There are gals watching too, not all guys.
Give me a break Guys!!! It was only 129 times he said it.
I Must've Watched This Video About 10Times. I'm More Mechanical Than Electrical. But, Good Lesson Though "Guy". So I'm Having This Fuel Pump Issue, And After Watching For The 11th Time and Got Enough Heart To Hot Wiring the Fuel Pump Ground (AKA 30), I got No Fuel Priming. So What I Understand from That Is My Fuel Pump Is Toast.. ? Yes? 😕🤔... (Possibly A Bad Wiring/Poor Connection To The F.Pump, But, Highly Unlikely)
GUYSS
I had the same problem with my 2005 impala it died on me I could smell the burned wires I look down and seen it laying on belt
Aslong as it's just wires you can solder em back together ;)
How me can oder
low miles hell is that for sale lol
I'm begging you. PLEASE, PLEASE STOP SAYING GUYS. You had to say that at least 100 times in this video. I liked the video but this was driving me nuts.
I do the same thing Schmidt only with the word man hard habit to correct.
I agree - I'd throw in a few 'dudes' here in there or possibly 'pups' or 'milkies' to keep it interesting.
SATAMAN Schmidt I Gots No Problem Him Saying Guys, I Just Pay Attention To What He's Saying/Teaching Not The Amount Of Guys He Says Apparently That's The Common Addresser He Uses When He Speaks.. Besides, It's Probably Only Guys Watching This Video Anyway... Lol (I Know I'm Gonna Get In Trouble For That Last Statement) Hehe. 😜
SATAMAN Schmidt ok Guy
Had same thing happen to my 04 Impala 3800 so appreciate the vid
Stop calling us guys. lol
