Cathedral Mountain (+ Twin Spires) day walk

  • In this wonderful, less visited part of the Walls of Jerusalem in Tasmania's stunning World Heritage Area lies Cathedral Mountain. This mountain dominates the view from Kia Ora Hut, and I had wanted to climb it for some time. Most people head out there over 2 days, but I only had one free day for the walk. In the end, I managed it quite comfortably, with the entire walk taking about 10 hours. Bear in mind that I walk quite quickly. Many parties may not be able to achieve these two peaks in one day.
    As I say at the end, and mention in the text at the beginning, this is a less visited area of the Walls, and as a result is is more vulnerable to impacts from visitation. Take care if visiting, follow the Leave No Trace principles and Minimal Impact Bushwalking Guidelines, and enjoy it!

    you definitely need to stay overnight at Tent Tarn one day - the sunsets on a clear day are beyond words...

      If I had got the day after off, then I may have got to experience that! I suspect I'll be heading back there at some point though; a gorgeous place.

    Hi Lucas, loved your coverage of this trip. I did walk to Twin Spires on Cathedral Plateau from Chapter Lake campsite in January 1990 ...34 years ago! This was part of a 10 day highlands hike from Walls to Lake St Clair via Lake Ball, Lake Meston, & Junction Lake with 2 nights overnight camp at base of Grail Falls on Chapter Lake. Like you I was incredibly lucky with glorious weather. Its indeed a place with glorious views. Michael.

      Thanks Michael! One day it would be good to just do something like what you did then as allocate a week or two to just explore the Walls and Central Highlands.

      Yes Lucas indeed I planned my walk for some weeks beforehand, travelled alone, but met many others along the various tracks covered. Most difficult section was following the fault line between Junction Lake aalong Cloister Lagoon to Chapter Lake as it was unmarked and very rough back in 1990. I had good laminated 25K topo maps well portioned food for each day, & lucky with good weather until last day. My most memorable trip ever. @@LucasChamberlain

      I hear ya when it comes to that section alongside Cloister Lagoon. I was there just before Christmas when I went to Mountains of Jupiter, and that stretch of track from Junction to the southern end of Cloister Lagoon was pretty unexciting and not the greatest track. It went even more faint as I approached Junction Lake, but at least that part was quite scenic haha.

    Outstanding video Lucas. What a great panorama. I've camped a couple of times at Ducane ( I know a no no ) and observed Cathedral Mt in the moonlight as I fell asleep so it's great to see it from the summit. As usual your finger pointing of landmarks is a distinguishing feature of your videos. Thank you. Tas is opening up its border to Melbourne on the 27th ( hopefully) and will finally come down .

      Yes not too long now! Assuming the recent developments in SA don't change things.

      Yeah it's definitely doable as a day walk - most people would do it as an overnighter, but if you only have one day then it can be done. I'd try it with longer daylight hours.

      @@LucasChamberlain Hey Lucas, I bit the bullet and went on the Monday public holiday, the day was perfect. I visited Cathedral, both spires, and climbed out on to the 'middle spire', which doesn't seem to have a name (?). It was the best view of the overland track I've witnessed to date (from Cathedral), so thanks for confirming that it was fairly easily achievable in a day! Cheers.

      @@LucasChamberlain If you go some way down the track from kiora you will find a piece of rusty wire wrapped around a tree. This marks the point where that track to lees starts. Im dreaming of a circuit... Walls to hartnet to kiora to lees and road walk to car.

    Wow!! You lucky bugger!! I went up in early Feb this year (hard to believe its THE SAME YEAR!) and as I ascended it was stinking hot!!! By the time I got to Cathedral mountain, the change came through and it rained!!! Camped at Tent Tarn and was (I kid you not) 20 degrees at 8 pm !! Bloody hot night in the tent!! Well done on the time though.....and yes...thanks for clearing up which hut was which as I came across the same dilemma!

      @LucasChamberlain  Před 3 lety

      Yeah it was only once I was home that I realised it couldn't be Kia ora hut; the orientation wasn't right.
      Sounds like I'll have to camp at tent tarn sometime!

    Another great video of an area I had the pleasure of visiting albeit a bit rushed for you on a day trip. Unfortunately the vision is spoiled by written text. This practice appears to become more common of late on many u tube postings and often carries spelling mistakes to the point of annoyance. Sorry to be so picky. Keep up the good work Lucas.😉

    • @LucasChamberlain
      @LucasChamberlain  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks Peter 🙂
      I try to avoid putting text on screen, but I included it on the summit panorama clip as I misidentified the hut as Kia Ora hut and was correcting myself.
      Usually I'll only do it if the wind is too strong, and it'll be generally pretty discreet or small.

    Nice fun little walk would be Woods Quoin 926mASL it's about 2.25km 1hr 45 return with some very light scrub and has pretty good views.
    It is located about 15km north-north-east (15min) of the farming town of Bothwell.

      Hey mate, I've been working over the summer, but did do some good walks late last year including some peaks out near Frenchmans Cap. I might be going to horizontal hill next weekend, and a friend and I are doing the Mt Anne circuit in late February.
