    I have it on good authority that the final statement was made through gritted teeth. They were all seething at the loss of the franchise as they bid more than Westcountry TV and yet they still did not get the franchise awarded......

    Ruth Langsford and Ian Stirling nearly fluffs their lines again. Wouldn't have it any other way.

    Ian read my birthday out at least 3 times with Gus Runny Bum. It really had a community feel to it that channel.

    I have always thought that the Bristol area (HTV West) should have been separate news and advertising region and should have been attached to the same company as the one that serves the south west (TSW) rather than to Wales, making the region a bit more lucrative, and bringing it into line with the government region of the south west, and there would be around 5.2 million viewers. (How many times have we heard the west of England being referred to as the West Country?) Also, bidding for both the south west and the west of England as one area, £16 million might not have been too high. For goodness sake, HTV got away with bidding £20 million for Wales and the West combined.

    heck mark..what do you want them to do...sit at home penniless and stressing that because they have no money that little johnny's braces will have to wait another two years? heck no! i don't blame them one bit...plus you can't have dead air...you have to have flawless transitions from one station to another on the same channel

    The biggest victim of the ITV auction was TSW. While Thames did a few things to piss off the Tories, and TVS had it coming, with their mismanagement, TSW's only problem was that it bid too low.

    • @essvee86
      @essvee86 Před 9 lety +4

      No disagreement with you on that one.

      No, it bid too high! TSW's bid was rejected because the ITC didn't think it could run a business on that bid. TSW felt hard-done-by on that, because no-one really mentioned that the ITC might reject bids on that basis. The sad irony was that in 1994 some of the ITV companies were able to renegotiate the amounts they had bid (i.e. agreed to pay the govt each year) because it turned out their bids weren't sustainable either. That was very unfair on TSW, really.

      TSW bid £16 million and Westcounty bid £8 million. A massive overbid sadly

      Ian was very upset at the loss of TSW's franchise. While singing Auld Lang Syne at the end of the last TSW Today he looked close to tears.

    Did Westcountry Television stay in Plymouth would like to know please

    • @TheFrem1
      @TheFrem1 Před 6 lety +5

      Westcountry TV had purpose built studio's at Language Science Park on the edge of Plymouth, The studio's at Derrys Cross were abandoned FOR tv use, Changed use and eventually demolished

    • @Althekeys
      @Althekeys Před 4 lety +5

      They had a converted industrial unit at Langage which had no soul whatsoever. When you remember the magic of Derrys Cross and the fact that so many familiar faces worked (or had worked there) the new building was just a box with a carpark. Now long gone too as they closed the studios and it's now a regular office building again.
