The younger generation of Singapore Chinese no longer proud of their Chinese culture and names. Chinese names have meaning to it and can connect to their ancestors. Why must we adopt Anglo-Saxon name first, then followed by the Chinese name?No matter what, the Western people or ang mo will not recognise us as Whites people. We Asians must retain our own identity of names.
You should find out about English names the mainland Chinese named themselves... you'd flip. This is true... I had colleagues who was named "Lucky", "Gambling" and they met a person named "Win". Not kidding. Then, I met a woman who called herself Handowin. So, hand in Chinese is 手 shou, and Win in Chinese is 赢 ying. Put them together and you get "手赢", which is all good and fine until you realize that in Chinese, "masturbation" is also pronounced 手淫 the same. So, I told her and she got angry but refused to change the name. Go figure.
