Personally, I think that the multiple definitions of words are often artificial constructs, and that the meaning of words is a lot more fluid in our brains than our language wants to allow. English has at least four definitions for the word "litter", and, even though three of them are nouns and one is a verb, I think they all refer to the same central concept. (Though the "litter of kittens" definition is quite a bit more detached from that concept than the others.)

Russell seemed irritated when you started paying attention to Teen. He hit "no" and was glancing at Teen and doing 'angry tail' movements. He made a point to keep rubbing/scenting mom and mom's "litter" bins. He's just showing Teen who is top cat around here!
i think his tail movements were actually him thinking! billie, another button talking cat, does the same thing when she's having a think about what and how to say something and giving cats a 'thinking' toy gives the same results. not overstimulated or angry lashing, just stimulated wagging!

I absolutely L O V E these videos! I don't have buttons at home but my cat is very communivative! I'm sure it's because I talk to him and his cousin all of the time! I noticed Russle likes to play fetch and pouts at times. My grandDog n grandCat are famous for adding their extra touch for the guilt factor... hanging their head low and glancing over their shoulder to see if I SEE them pouting. As soon as u say... 'There's no need to pout, you were in trouble, I had to scold you!' You can almost see them smile when they come running back over foe reassurance. These two critters have brought me SoOO much joy. It really is amazing how imtelligent our pets really are! They will show us if/when we pay more attention and interact with them! Thank you for sharing your families life with us! Thank you so very much for sharing your story with Russ and his buttons, and for being so in depth about the how and why you've trained him,I require a service dog however as a first time renter(in an unsuitable sized home so have chosen to not pursue it just yet) and coming from DV, I've chosen the pandemic and the craziness (I'm keeping that part VERY polite lol) of pricing of puppies by "legitimate breeders" to experiment with the two kittens we purchased after moving here, firstly to see if it's viable to have a cat as a service animal which so far I'm proving that whilst it's definitely a challenge and obviously very different to dogs, its working far better that I anticipated, my 14 year old son and I both have issues with mental illness and my son is autistic but undiagnosed as yet (damn Australian health and schooling system, I've moved states to give him a better opportunity for his future and the diagnosis side of things which has caused him a lot of mood issues understandably) and I have severe CPTSD, both cats will naturally "task" to our needs and we have been able to use this to form proper and specific behaviours, im now going to be adding buttons like this to our training as both cats are very vocal and expressive and I believe they will pick buttons up very quickly and it will only help emensely with other parts of their training, so again thank you so much for showing me the possibilities with them
Litter box= smelly, messy, poop gets thrown away. Trash = maybe smelly, probably messy, definitely gets thrown away. The *trash can* is definitely smelly, and both cat poop and trash get thrown in there, so maybe "litter" is "that which should be put in the stinky trash can". It's just abstract enough for us humans to be amazed that Russell grasps this.

Cats have always known how to communicate with hoomans. We’ve just been too stupid to understand what they were saying. Although, I must admit, “litter tray” was a phrase I learned from my cat. The cat would announce she needed it, I would promise to clean it afterwards, I would forget and she would use a particular miaow that I came to recognise. The first few times, I struggled and she stood on, repeating it over and over. Once she knew I understood, she turned away and went to sleep in one of the bedrooms. Later when I caught on immediately, she turned away and went to sleep in one of the bedrooms. She knew she had taught me well..
I think we already knew, the complexities of words. Then at other times, they seem to fall short and are never enough to adequately explain...then here comes Russ the cat with his take, on things😂😂

Litter box= smelly, messy, poop gets thrown away. Trash = maybe smelly, probably messy, definitely gets thrown away. The *trash can* is definitely smelly, and both cat poop and trash get thrown in there, so maybe "litter" is "that which should be put in the stinky trash can". It's just abstract enough for us humans to be amazed that Russell grasps this.

Cats have always known how to communicate with hoomans. We’ve just been too stupid to understand what they were saying.
Although, I must admit, “litter tray” was a phrase I learned from my cat. The cat would announce she needed it, I would promise to clean it afterwards, I would forget and she would use a particular miaow that I came to recognise. The first few times, I struggled and she stood on, repeating it over and over. Once she knew I understood, she turned away and went to sleep in one of the bedrooms.
Later when I caught on immediately, she turned away and went to sleep in one of the bedrooms.
She knew she had taught me well..
Russell has definitely learned to generalize the word litter and use it correctly for its multiple meanings.
I think we already knew, the complexities of words. Then at other times, they seem to fall short and are never enough to adequately explain...then here comes Russ the cat with his take, on things😂😂
