      Occasionally, they're out of my cat's favorite food at the store and I have to buy a substitute. She will glare at me and then mimic scratching litter over it. Her meaning is quite clear: "Mom, this garbage you're feeding me is nothing but poop." I've never seen any other cat do this, although I'm sure there must be a few out there. Cracks me up!

    He understands the duality of the word litter? You have got to be kitten me!? 😸

    • @gaysarahk
      @gaysarahk Před 2 lety +9

      He understands that "no" can mean "stop" or "lack of"; and he seems to understand that "litter" can refer to the litter machine in the guest bathroom, the guest bathroom itself, or anything that "doesn't belong here".
      Personally, I think that the multiple definitions of words are often artificial constructs, and that the meaning of words is a lot more fluid in our brains than our language wants to allow. English has at least four definitions for the word "litter", and, even though three of them are nouns and one is a verb, I think they all refer to the same central concept. (Though the "litter of kittens" definition is quite a bit more detached from that concept than the others.)

    Thank you so very much for sharing your story with Russ and his buttons, and for being so in depth about the how and why you've trained him,I require a service dog however as a first time renter(in an unsuitable sized home so have chosen to not pursue it just yet) and coming from DV, I've chosen the pandemic and the craziness (I'm keeping that part VERY polite lol) of pricing of puppies by "legitimate breeders" to experiment with the two kittens we purchased after moving here, firstly to see if it's viable to have a cat as a service animal which so far I'm proving that whilst it's definitely a challenge and obviously very different to dogs, its working far better that I anticipated, my 14 year old son and I both have issues with mental illness and my son is autistic but undiagnosed as yet (damn Australian health and schooling system, I've moved states to give him a better opportunity for his future and the diagnosis side of things which has caused him a lot of mood issues understandably) and I have severe CPTSD, both cats will naturally "task" to our needs and we have been able to use this to form proper and specific behaviours, im now going to be adding buttons like this to our training as both cats are very vocal and expressive and I believe they will pick buttons up very quickly and it will only help emensely with other parts of their training, so again thank you so much for showing me the possibilities with them

    Yes Russ, mom littered the house with trash! 🤣🤣🤣 WHAT was she THINKING!! 🤣🤣🤣

  • @spooniesarah
    @spooniesarah Před 2 lety +2

    Litter box= smelly, messy, poop gets thrown away. Trash = maybe smelly, probably messy, definitely gets thrown away. The *trash can* is definitely smelly, and both cat poop and trash get thrown in there, so maybe "litter" is "that which should be put in the stinky trash can". It's just abstract enough for us humans to be amazed that Russell grasps this.

  • @uzumakirakku

    Russell: litter is stinky. broken toy is stinky. messy boxes are stinky.

  • @kjamison5951

    Cats have always known how to communicate with hoomans. We’ve just been too stupid to understand what they were saying.
    Although, I must admit, “litter tray” was a phrase I learned from my cat. The cat would announce she needed it, I would promise to clean it afterwards, I would forget and she would use a particular miaow that I came to recognise. The first few times, I struggled and she stood on, repeating it over and over. Once she knew I understood, she turned away and went to sleep in one of the bedrooms.
    Later when I caught on immediately, she turned away and went to sleep in one of the bedrooms.
    She knew she had taught me well..
