Taking a look at Bluey's Uncle Stripe, he is often depicted as irresponsible and lazy when it comes to parenting, yet remains as one of the most popular characters in the show. Could there be more to his character than most people imagine?

Don't worry Stripe fans, I got you.
Stripe isn't relatively a bad parent, he's a work in progress one. As we see, Stripe is the youngest brother. He got himself a love-intrest, two chaotic kids, and a loving family. He's still young though so he doesn't have the best parenting experience but he's learning everyday with his kids just like Bandit or any other parent. There is no such thing as a "bad character" in Bluey. Every character represents someone in real life as it is a slice-of-life show, no character is the way they are without reason. And therefore, Stripe is not a bad parent, just not the best... yet. He'll get there someday. For now, just run your own race.

I actually think Stripe and Bandit are actually a brilliant contrast as parents in their families. Given how they were raised as kids (and even very young), their upbringing determined a lot of who they became as parents.
They normally didn’t have a lot of freedom and were brought up in a distant and stricter household.
Bandit was neglected and acted out, being very bratty while Stripe was the younger pushover for the longest time.
I think Stripe being hands off and giving the kids what they want was probably his way of giving his kids what he never truly got, all the joys of being a kid.
Bandit on the other hand was regularly neglected and took what he had for granted. He would later grow up to be a lot more responsible and spending time with his kids, giving what he felt never truly had, a loving caring household.
I feel like they are very alike and are glad they reconnected with their mother. A slow healing of family relationships.

      @mynameisreallycool1 Před 9 měsíci +22

It didn't seem like he was neglected, from the way his parents were shown in the Fairytale episode. The parents seemed generally normal. I think people are judging Bandit's parents too harshly because they were parents in the 80s, and nowadays, it's trendy to pretend that all baby boomer parents were awful to their kids, even if what they did was no worse than what gen x or millennial parents were/are doing. They didn't seem perfect, but Bandit didn't seem neglected.

I was wondering when someone would offer an opportunity for conversation about this.
My opinion, Stripe is *not* a bad parent. He's just inexperienced and wound up with a real handful of a kid. Just like Muffin, he self-corrects when he realizes his mistakes. Library demonstrates this perfectly. Yes, he ran the red light. Yes, he made an excuse for it. Yes, he planted the seed that Muffin drew upon to declare herself an unpleasable sovereign and ruin Bluey and Bingo's game. However, once he heard them tell him what the issue with Muffin was, he went and straightened it out - and the end of the episode showed that Stripe had also decided to start practicing what he preached.
...Now, Stripe's status as a *brother in law*? Definitely much more vulnerable. His annoyances and inconveniences to Chili are few but plenty.

I liked that episode, because it showed that parents who don't act well around their kids often set a bad example for them, causing them to follow their parents' bad habits. Finally, a show that holds parents responsible for their children's behavior. Most of the time, the child learns their bad behavior from someone they know in their life, often their own parents. The thing is, while Stripe admitted this to himself and calmly communicated with Muffin what he meant by "special" and also corrected his behavior by stopping at the red light, a lot of parents don't want to admit that they sometimes are careless or selfish, so they spank their kid and call it a day, or whatever.

I always assumed Stripe was a work-oholic, which would explain why he could afford such a nice house and car, but would also explain why Trixie told him that he wasn't there alot of the time for his kids. I'm NOT saying that choosing to work long hours excuses him from spending time with his kids. I think that even if people chose a job that requires them to work long hours, they should still put their Families first.

  • @TrueEnergizerBunnies
    @TrueEnergizerBunnies Před 9 měsíci +51

I always saw Stripe as more of a push over in personality. He was always pushed around by his brothers and now he's pushed around by his kids. Muffin is just a massive brat and gets away with everything all the time and Stripe kinda allows that by not confronting her and dealing with her tantrums. Socks was a handful when she was little too, but she's since seemed to have calmed down. You also see Stripe and Trixie fight sometimes so it doesnt seem like they see eye to eye all the time. I think Stripe is trying his best, Trixie too, but they are flawed. Just like all of us.
I will say though that if they dont start cracking down on Muffin now, she's gonna be a holy horror when she gets older. Bratty kids like that usually start very young and happen when you dont consistently punish bad behavior. Its amazing how very quickly the behaviors of little kids change if you are constant with rules and punishments for breaking those rules.

Muffin has been getting better too though. She even worries about being too mean in pretend play in Granny Mobile, and even back in Library, when Stripe pulls her up on her behaviour, she immediately accepts that she isn’t special to everyone and plays properly after that.

Muffin isn't really bad, just unaware of the consequences of her actions. She likes to act crazy and doesn't stop until someone asks her to in a way she can understand, but once she realizes that what she's doing can have a negative impact on others she usually stops.
She's going to turn out completely fine once she really realizes what she's able to do without upsetting others.

I kinda feel it was a little unfair to compare Stripe to Bandit since Stripe gets less screen attention & he will NEVER BE AS GODLY AS BANDI-
But all jokes aside they both have very different characters, such as Stripe being more lax while Bandit’s more of the fun and competitive type and we see him grow/change more as a character compared to Stripe. And I feel it’s kind of a stretch to say that Stripe is an arguably worse parent since he does just lack experience (being the youngest of his brothers and all) and having to raise someone of Muffin’s scale does NOT look easy, and my family says I’m the most patient.
Muffin’s pretty impressionable, as shown in Library & Muffin Cone (if you wanna consider it because she sucked her thumb to get the cone again) so I can see how someone like Stripe just wants to get away from her. And it also shows how Stripe just needs more help with parenting especially lacking experience because we have Bandit who just endures the chaos while Stripe doesn’t tackle it, or that he lacks stamina.
But I wouldn’t say Stripe’s a bad parent, he’s just knew to everything and as you pointed out, still growing himself as a parent.
And yes you’ll probably hate me for this and many others here, but I think Bob’s worse of a parent.
If you’re still reading after me going full nerd, I think you should make a video covering hidden moments in the show. What I mean by this is when moments like when Bluey brings up Boscow in front of Frisky in Double Babysitter. I hope it’s an interesting idea you’ll try out 👍

Ok I don't know if you have kids but I'm gonna tell you right now as someone with almost 3 1/2 yo twins and an almost 2 yo. This is a ROUGH age range
There's a reason they call it the terrible twos and fantastic fours. Bluey and Bingo are 6/7 and 4/5 respectfully depending on the season. Whereas Muffin and Socks are 3 and 1.
I love my kids and would do anything for them.... But I also need 10 minutes away from them from time to time. Kids at this stage are breaking every boundary they can to see what happens. They are hyper, curious, extremely focused on details, doing everything they can to copy you, because they are trying to figure out the world around them and where everything fits. This normally involves a lot of messes, fights, and deciding which battles are worth fighting and which fires are most urgent to put out.
I love Stripes because I'm literally living his and Trixie's life right now, plus an extra kid. They're not negligent, they are exhausted. I can promise you Bandit and Chili had these moments too, are now passed them, and are better parents for it. Whereas Trixie and Stripes are still in the trenches and are crawling through mud and gunk to get out. Good portion of the time literally.

I think something that needs to be considered is Stripe's personal trauma. He grew up being bullied by his A-type personality brother Bandit, constantly losing at everything no matter how hard he tried. There is baggage that comes with constantly failing and being bullied while simultaneously watching his older brother doing the same thing and succeeding at nearly everything he does, while Stripe himself lost over and over again. The type of laziness we see with Stripe is the kind that seems to come from a learned helplessness. At some point his desire to do something about the problem overrides the fear of failure, but after failing in some way again, he runs away. I'm not excusing his behavior, I'm saying, he needs therapy to address his internal issues.

Weighing-in as the parent of an actual mad 5-year-old (think Muffin, but with Bingo’s sweetness, plus ADHD): it’s a lot harder to be as enthusiastic as Bandit and Chillie, especially when you’ve been working all day, the house is a mess, you have a puppy, and have no energy left. He’s not a bad dad, he’s clearly younger than his brother, and still learning. There are days when I can be a really good parent, and others where, yes, I’m playing on my phone so I don’t have to listen to the hell that is Blippi 😂 But dad and I work as a team: he is full of energy and active, and I’m the comforting, talkative parent. I wonder if Stripes method of parenting has to do with him being the youngest of his brothers.
Like how in some families the youngest child doesn’t have that many responsibilities like their older sibling so they have more freedom to themselves.
So I wonder Stripe is this way because of that.
I’m the youngest in my family but I don’t have kids.

You have a good point with the fact that Stripe isn't the best at parenting, but I think he's just a busy provider for his family. In Faceytalk, Trixie said he's not always around to help with the kids. I take that as him just doing his job as the dad who works in his office all the time. I don't really know what his occupation is, his Wiki page isn't saying anything about it as far as I know. But since Muffin's family looks very wealthy, I'll just take that as him having a high position in his job so he's being paid well and can't really be home that much.
Also take this with a grain of salt I'm still new to Bluey :'D

    My opinion on Stripe:
It’s very clear that Stripe lets his own insecurities from childhood effect his parenting. In “Squash” we see him and bingo bond over being the younger sibling and the conflicts that happen between siblings. (and how they can effect you later in life) And in “Fairytale” his relationship with Bandit as a kid was quite strained. This makes it seem he’s not only inexperienced, but rather focuses on keeping his kids happy (even if it negatively effects other people.) and not thinking of the long term effects that this kind of parenting may have because he doesn’t want his kids to feel the way he did when he was young.
It’s good that he and Trixie have the means to support their family and then some, but having that privilege is something that muffin and socks don’t understand yet. Getting what they want when they want it for the sake of momentary peace or happiness, unfortunately, turns into… well… muffin. (And difficulties being told “no” among other problems.)
It’s clear that Trixie is trying to do her research on what can help her kids best (and is clearly the firmer parent).
The conflict of Trixies more hands on “tough love” approach and Stripes hands off “Laid back” approach, leads to the kids having a lack of parental structure because of the lack of consistency between the two. Which can be confusing for little ones.
Bandit and chilli seem to have put a lot of thought into how they parent, and strive for good communication. Unfortunately Stripe may not have great communication skills, and that’s okay! However it just may be effecting his kids in a way he couldn’t foresee.

I like how it's made obvious in the show that stripe(and Muffins mom) are still figuring things out as a new parent. Muffin is 3, so she's only just begun being a person to be parented as opposed to basically just a stinky crying pot plant.

This video reminded me of OnlyLeigh's 5 stages of watching Bluey, where there's a bonus clip of one of someone having beef with Muffin. As for those who don't know what the song from Facey Talk actually is, it's called March of the Toreadors which was used in Fnaf but I'll let this slide as this was obviously a joke in the video.
That being said, yeah Stripe isn't the best dad, especially when compared to Bandit, but I can see he's trying. He's definitely contributing to Muffin's spoiled attitude and his actions in the first two seasons doesn't help his case either. However, episodes such as Facey Talk does show that he's once again trying, and also trying to better communicate with Trixie. Let's just see where this leads.
Although, I should mention that not all the parents are perfect and there were times that both Chilli and Bandit did things that made me a little ticked off at them. Examples that come to mind include Handstand, Dance Mode, and more recently Obstacle Course. However, they usually admit to mistakes (for the most part) and do try to make up for them, and it shows that even the best parents mess up sometimes.

I also think Stripe and Trixie have made mistakes that they’re dealing with now just like any new parents. They spoiled Muffin because she was their first baby, and now she has some negative behaviors that they’re trying to correct now. As someone who adores Muffin as a character, she’s not an “easy” kid and she’s a headstrong, independent little girl but she’s more than willing to change her mind when given a good reason like in Library. She’s got a personality that is difficult for new parents to get a handle on at first and that’s okay, they’ll learn how to bring out the best in her just like she’ll eventually bring out the best in them.

Reminder too, that kids like Muffin sometimes are not triggered by anything. They are just more chaotic. And it can be super exhausting to have a kid not react to any attempt of gentle parenting. That's why I see mum taking a break... some times parents don't like their kids all that much either. That's why parenting is all about incondicional love, not "I am your parent as long as I like you"

To be honest…I‘be gotta agree with you B & B. While Stripe is a great character, he’s funny and chilled and laidback, sometimes he can be a little TOO laidback. I’ve always thought to myself when I was a little younger “why doesn’t Stripe do ANYTHING about Muffin?! He always lets her get away with things!” And I just thought that’s why she’s such a brat because her parents never taught her the right thing, there QUITE LITERALLY scared of there own child when she “blows her top” so I get and understand it.

Stripes just trying his best. As an incompetent person myself I relate to him because of the feeling of being the little brother all the time (despite being an only child). He's a pretty bad parent and that definitely explains... Muffin. But he's at least trying in Facey Talk and he tries to be there which makes him at least a good parent (though he may not be a competent one)

  • @jettthewolf887
    @jettthewolf887 Před 7 měsíci +1

If I absolutely had to choose between Stripe and Trixie as the worst parent, I would actually pick Trixie. I think Stripe is trying his hardest, but Trixie scolding him for putting Muffin in timeout and then saying he's "not there" for her is pretty toxic and degrading for him as a father, in my opinion. And I think its also a big part of why Muffin is a brat.
Timeout is a perfectly acceptable form of discipline for a child - much better than the old days when you got the belt or other form of physical punishment. Making your kid sit in their room for a little bit to cool down and think about their actions gives them time to teach themselves how to do better and be a better person. I don't really agree with Trixie's style of parenting and her constant berating of Stripe tbh.

And you’re so right about her being a little combative!
In all the episodes I watched-and was especially present in “the Sign”-it is pretty much almost always TRIXIE who starts the arguments with Stripe. I don’t think I’ve seen ONE TIME in any episode where Stripe was the one who started the argument with her. She just seems kind of gullible (though both of them are) and doesn’t have much in the way of fluid or situational intelligence (though neither does Stripe, but Trixie might be worse)

Stripe is not bad, saying he’s the worst parent is kinda intense. Sure, he isn’t as amazing as his brother, he simply… has a little less experience and much younger children, but he’s definitely learning day by day. Remember the Faceytalk episode?
Also, this video made me realize that a bad parent in Bluey would be actually interesting to see. When you think about it, there are no abusive parents in this show, yet this topic is not uncommon. I think such thing could actually work out!

@@Magulousmous We have abusive parents in many other kids shows, such as My Little Pony which has a similar target audience as Bluey. Stripe and Trixie as well as their daughters are important characters to have within the context of the show. Parents see Bandit and Chilli being pretty much perfect parents and it can help them with how they can aspire to be as parents, whereas Stripe and Trixie remind them that not everyone is perfect as parents and it's okay to have faults.
It's important to depict characters like Stripe, Trixie, Muffin and Socks. If you don't and just have the perfect family of Bandit, Chilli, Bluey and Bingo, it may make people watching doubt if they are doing it right.
