  • Yes we're testing some 480s today - no, they are not of the "RX" variety. Let's see if hard use really causes performance degradation!

Too bad I can't play Fallout 4 or The Witcher 3, because my GPU doesn't support DX11 but I can watch ''Let's play'' videos and it's almost like playing the game. • @atomicskull6405
      @atomicskull6405 Před 6 lety +28

      Doesn't work like that, over time the chip degrades and eventually gets to a point where it'll throw out errors under certain circumstances but the chip will appear to work fine otherwise. One example of this is when an old video card will put up bars on the screen sometimes but otherwise works fine. Eventually as the degradation progresses it gets worse and worse until the chip becomes unusable. Even with adequate cooling overclocking speeds this process up, however even at stock speeds they still degrade over time albeit more slowly.
      Note that this WILL NOT cause performance degradation, just an increase in erroneous operation.

    • @Impact009
      @Impact009 Před 6 lety +5

      @Teth47 They don't run perfectly at all. That's why product binning exists. Visheras are all the same hardware, but the difference is in the defects. A high-quality Vishera will be binned at say, 8370, while a lower quality one will only be binned as an 8300. All software will "fail" after a certain hardware error threshold to prevent damage, and a lower bin will start to fail at a lower clock speed than their higher bin counterparts.

    Performance degradation in PCs mainly happens because over time software gets updated to take advantage of newer hardware so their new features are made with newer hardware's performance envelope and capabilities in mind. Over the years the PC will still perform at the same envelope as when it was initially bought but the software on it is no longer the same, it has invariably become more resource intensive and your hardware just can't keep up with it anymore like it used to. Any other noticeable slowdowns are pretty much due to thermal issues like CPU or GPU throttling due to failing/clogged fans or any other hardware with moving parts wearing down over time like good old spinning disks hard disk drives.

      If only... They do die with use. I bought an R9 270x Devil for $110 used, plugged it in, and shot bolts of lightning killing my TV (I'm guessing it was used for bitcoin mining, they were selling 4).Then being lower on budget, went with a brand new 270 (not x and only single fan instead of 3) for $90. That one works great and overclocks @ 25% like a champ, so other than the TV dead, its not terrible.
      I wouldn't worry about running them for long periods of time unless they are getting hot. Sure running them at 100% for a couple years may kill them, but for gaming, you have to sleep sometime, and if your that into gaming, you probably buy new GPU's every year or two anyways. If you do run one to its death, you've probably got your money's worth out of it.
      Biggest killers would be dropping, lightning or power surges, other electrical, spilling your drink on it, overvolting/overclocking absurd amounts, running them past 100c all the time, and then getting so much dust that it catches fire some day (not in that particular order).

Now I have an LG G3, it's 2 years old, and with every Android software update my phone has actually been getting faster xD I'm pretty sure Apple slows down older phones purposely... they don't bother optimizing it, but they do the complete opposite. FYI I had a 3 year contract with my iPhone 4S so when my phone was really slow just after 2 years, I was pretty angry.

    Performance degradation is caused by SOFTWARE, not HARDWARE. What happens is operating systems (more relevant to portable devices like smartphones) and drivers (relevant to video cards) over time get optimized for new generation hardware in determent of the old. This happens for several reasons:
    1. It takes more time and resources to write software that works well on the full range of hardware, old and new
    1.1 - it's in the manufacturers interest when old hardware suffers from performance degradation. Why?
    A -> it's cheaper to optimise for new hardware only, even if those optimizations degrade performance on older hardware, and optimizing for older hardware as well as new would cost more man hours.
    B -> performance degradation might cause users to upgrade, thus the manufacturer profits.
    2. Older hardware may lack features new hardware has - by requiring those features, new software / drivers may degrade performance of old hardware witch lack said features.
    There you have it. Example: - Modded skyrim with seasons of skyrim patch, verdant and 2k texture pack used to get over 45 fps on my old GTX 970 a year ago. Now, it gets about 25-35 -that's a considerable performance loss. Why? Driver updates. While the 970 still performs well in new games like Rise of the Tomb Raider (even better than with old drivers that perform well in skyrim), older titles get a performance hit.

      However on "hot devices" that rely on fans will only get worse specially when the fans are always at top speed for long time and the thermal compound will also make it downclock more after it's completely dry and have worse heat transference...
      Smartphones most of the high performance ones only run for very little time on max clocks and will downclock very fast.
      But most likely you will upgrade your hardware before the thermal compound gets completely like a crap, so it won't probably affect much, but will certainly affect the devices that already come brand new always at near max temps...

Then you get used to things going that fast, new games come out that your card doesn't handle that well, etc, and suddenly it's "Man, this thing just doesn't perform like it used to." In fact, it does, it's just no longer the new hotness. It's the old slowness now.

      I completely agree, having high end hardware can easily last you years, if you allocate your resources properly and don't go all out, trying to have the best of the best, when that is easily trumped in the next year. a Gtx 480 is still able to run games on medium at 1080p without a problem, aside from poorly optimized ports I guarantee my Gtx 970 will continue to run 1080p at medium 40-60 fps in 5 years. as well. Whereas in 5 years the ps4 will be obsolete and put on the shelf for the next generation.

    • @darkaiso

      I game maybe 2- 10 hours a week, i spend a great deal more time on my computer, so when i game, it's easier to just have a graphics card on my rig so i can game on it rather than spending an extra 350 on a console, that i'd only use 10 hours a week, when i could just spend that on a capable graphics card and turn my working computer into a gaming computer, so it becomes multi purpose. Everyone's scenario is different, my application may differ from yours, but i believe many people are applicable to my situation.

    • @darkaiso
      @darkaiso Před 8 lety +1

      That is very true, consoles are a great alternatives for low spec computers that require a whole new build just for games, which are very costly. But in my case i already had a core i5 system with 8gb ram and a large hard drive, so it took some little upgrades, such as ssd, power supply and the bulk on the graphics card, to turn it into a capable gaming rig.

    I think that a major cause of performance degradation that affects all cards equally from the moment they are made is quantum teleportation of transistors in chips. Because the transistors are so small, the movement of a single atom even slightly is enough to ruin a transistor and because there are so many, it happens fairly often.

    • @Thogert
      @Thogert Před 8 lety +2

      It's not really atom migration that kills chips, it's a combination of diffusion (the heat drives this faster and this causes the chip to fail quicker if it is run at a higher temp at all times) and the breakdown of the dielectrics of the chips structure. All transistors and capacitors (in the vram portion) use some kind, if not multiple kinds of dielectric to keep the electrons where they need to be to run the way it was meant to run. The voltage potential of the electrons tunnel through this material and can damage it, this is one of the causes for NAND flash chips to only be programmable so many times before failure.

      No, he said that they're the primary cause of performance degradation. Updates are usually worth taking as they keep you secure and provide new features. Perhaps, though, sticking to an older version of an OS while it still has patches coming out might make sense if newer OSes are harder to run. Driver updates will usually increase performance as will some software updates while others will slow things down.

    Hi, I've worked for quite some time in the roofing and home improvement industry.
    Roofs wear out, shingles eventually stop being able to hold water, ice-dams run their course, and underlayment goes bad. This doesn't mean that every time it rains, you'll have water pouring on your head. It means that in many circumstances you'll get a leak, and that this leak will become worse over time, gradually.
    I advise everyone to ensure that they're using the highest-quality underlayment and shingles, and making sure that they're installed by a reputable contractor with a warranty that you can trust. Do not hire cheap, you will have problems down the line.

    • @pauljs75
      @pauljs75 Před 8 lety +5

      I suspect this happens. Some features supported by older cards can and do get pulled with updates. If support is ended for some reason, they also avoid bridging features supported by older cards from newer standards. (Theoretically backporting is possible with a thin software layer. Something's up when stuff that used to work perfectly in OpenGL3 doesn't work anymore in 4. Shouldn't have to switch to a full software layer to do things, when it's just the way some bit of code is being parsed. If A is now called B, the hardware could handle it if software only told the hardware A=B. Would be faster and less bloated, but they don't do that.)
      Only a problem if you're stretching every penny you get and trying to ride the long tail, if you have money to update and stay current - you'll never notice this stuff. Guess which side most developers are on? (Good luck with related bug reports.)
      And the way it happens, I'd say it's often planned obsolescence. The hardware is still capable, but companies are pushing the new stuff and do what they can to kill it off on purpose.

    As I've thought for years, product degradation really isn't a thing. If you are always using the exact same programs, you won't feel a difference 4 years later. The reason it feels like our computers get slower is because our software is always updating and needing slightly better stuff.

    • @ryohyamaru8282
      @ryohyamaru8282 Před 8 lety +2

      Ya it's especially noticeable if you game. That card that wrecked every game you threw at it then needs a bit of an overclock to keep it maxing games, then you need to tick AA off, then turn down some other settings and before you know it your gaming on medium/low just to get 60 fps.
      Well that's the way it used to be but now you can keep the same hardware for like 3-4 years at a shot and still have a halfway decent gaming rig ;p

    Personally i almost never experience preformance degradation, in fact i experience the OPPOSITE.
    I often run with the same old hardware for 3-4 years, and yet the games i can play on the same hardware, keep looking better and better, at the same framerate.
    Because software magic and innovative optimizations are what rules the gaming industry these days, NOT hardware preformance.
    You can play GTA5 with great framerates today, which looks gorgeous, on the same hardware that 4 years ago that ran GTA4 at identical framerates (with much worse graphics and extreme LOD popin).
    The real most common reason why people say they experience preformance degradation, is because they dont know how to take care of their machines or software. They bloat it with five different anti-viruses with expired definitions and constant real-time scans, while they somehow also managed to cram adware and malware on their machines and click "cancel" everytime its detected, while clicking on more porn site advertisement banners that night.
    Thats why you see preformance degrading over time as you use your computer/laptop.
    Not because the hardware is changing, but because your OS is getting jammed with shit that you dont take care of.
    Naturally most people watching this channel knows about that, but im talking about 90% of people who just run to forums and yell "diz broken it crashes", without really knowing anything about computers.

    • @gamagama69
      @gamagama69 Před 2 lety

      gta4 is not a good example because of how badly it's optimized. Whereas gta5 was well optimized from the start and only got better from rockstar updating it.

      "Fact" is a very strong word to use for a popular opinion based purely on conjecture. iPhones get iOS updates until they are severely outdated, the same cannot be said about android devices. Each version of iOS has more features and takes more system resources to run efficiently, because of this, older devices won't run as well on newer versions of iOS. This effect was amplified in the past due to the rapid increase in arm processor performance and other advances in smartphone technology, which is likely why the rumor that apple purposefully slows down older devices manifested, at worst, it could be said that they probably don't optimize newer versions of iOS for older iPhones and iPads, nearly as much as they do for new devices.

      Nikola Karovic Bro, it doesn't fucking matter. AMD is still using gcn and it means optimisations for really old cards. Consumers won't look at it and judge based on architecture. What they will see is consistent optimisation compared to nvidia on an individual card basis. Nvidia doesn't purposefully "gimp" hardware. it is just that their architecture changes per generation so optimising for old cards is not as viable as optimising for new cards

    We are essentially talking about switches, they flip 0 to 1 or 1 to 0. If they cannot do it, the device is broken. There is no "almost 1" or "almost 0" in binary, it's either 1 or 0.
    So the most common component of electronics (transistor) cannot slow down. Same applies to other components as well (bit more complicated, but the result is the same), excluding mechanical components of course.
    SSDs can lose working cells to write/read, so that they are losing capacity over time, but they don't slow down.
