- Yes we're testing some 480s today - no, they are not of the "RX" variety. Let's see if hard use really causes performance degradation!

6 year old graphics card?
Still better than a PS4 LOL!
you forgot the xbox one

ha ha ha cute -_-
Flying CAT PS4 Use confirmed!
+Gooseman2k2 haha I see what you did there
Who else thought that the GTX 480 in the title was a typo.
Yeah... Only me
lol youre not the only one
Same I thought it said rx 480 until I read it again
it's no longer in the title unfortunately
+Shravan Parthasarathy I meant thumbnail, not title. My bad
PoopCast it's not a bad card,j just a lil hot
My friend still uses his 460...
He has a skill for playing games at 20fps on a 4:3 monitor
How is he? :)
I'm still rocking a Radeon HD 5770 from 10 years ago
Gaming at 30fps
I'm still rocking with my vmodded ATI HD4670 and 19'' 1280x1024 monitor. I can play AAA games like The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion/Skyrim, The Witcher 2, Mass Effect 1/2/3, Dragon Age 1/2/3 and Fallout 3/NV/TTW. Too bad I can't play Fallout 4 or The Witcher 3, because my GPU doesn't support DX11 but I can watch ''Let's play'' videos and it's almost like playing the game. I have my studio tour and gaming setup video on my channel.
Nibba hol up
I can run gta 5 on mid settings and 1680x1050 with the same card what you talkin about?
@@stefantheconqueror8710 you're thinking of an RX 460, he's talking about a GTX 460 (which is much older and weaker)
surprised you didn't melt your hand on that GTX 480
Probably he got used to the r9 290x
the 480 easily gets past 95C and can max out at around 105C, whereas the 290x maxes at 94 and with a semi decent cooler maxes at 80ish C lol
as they say on /r/ayyyymd... get rekt novideo

Same here. I have a 290 as well, I'm waiting till black Friday to upgrade
still a good card, and the 10 series isn't holding up to all scrutiny so far, so you don't really know if you were missing out yet. i just bought a 980ti i couldn't be happier. always buy the last in a series of cards. not the first. for hardware and driver reasons
i have a 650tiboost so ya mines old not your.

It REALLY shouldn't. The GTX 480 should be about on par with the GTX 660, let alone the GTX 960...
He had a beast cpu
Dude, the 480 beats the 660 ti, not sure what you're talking about, yes a 960 should beat the 480, but a 660 doesn't.
+David Masson (L10 Industries) The Rx 480 is absolutely on par with a gtx 970. Benchmarks prove that.
It still blows my mind that we make devices with billions of functional units, and if a single one fails anywhere, the whole thing doesn't work, and the damn thing runs for a decade.
Imagine an engine with a billion moving parts. How long do you think that'd run at full throttle? Solid state electronics man. Crazy shit.
Teth47 so your new to this then
Wind Why is he new? Nothing newbie about being fascinated by technology.
Doesn't work like that, over time the chip degrades and eventually gets to a point where it'll throw out errors under certain circumstances but the chip will appear to work fine otherwise. One example of this is when an old video card will put up bars on the screen sometimes but otherwise works fine. Eventually as the degradation progresses it gets worse and worse until the chip becomes unusable. Even with adequate cooling overclocking speeds this process up, however even at stock speeds they still degrade over time albeit more slowly.
Note that this WILL NOT cause performance degradation, just an increase in erroneous operation.
@Teth47 They don't run perfectly at all. That's why product binning exists. Visheras are all the same hardware, but the difference is in the defects. A high-quality Vishera will be binned at say, 8370, while a lower quality one will only be binned as an 8300. All software will "fail" after a certain hardware error threshold to prevent damage, and a lower bin will start to fail at a lower clock speed than their higher bin counterparts.
Same thing with humans
Maybe you guys could do some proving/disproving of "driver nerfing" as well? It would be nice to see the benchmarks from the driver that 480 shipped with and then compare with the latest drivers on nvidia's site.
lol this video is hilarious because he said HP helps you save money in the end.

Performance degradation in PCs mainly happens because over time software gets updated to take advantage of newer hardware so their new features are made with newer hardware's performance envelope and capabilities in mind. Over the years the PC will still perform at the same envelope as when it was initially bought but the software on it is no longer the same, it has invariably become more resource intensive and your hardware just can't keep up with it anymore like it used to. Any other noticeable slowdowns are pretty much due to thermal issues like CPU or GPU throttling due to failing/clogged fans or any other hardware with moving parts wearing down over time like good old spinning disks hard disk drives.
The fuck is your name pal?

I guess GPU's are immortal then.
narpuppy420 Some aren't that lucky then.
If only... They do die with use. I bought an R9 270x Devil for $110 used, plugged it in, and shot bolts of lightning killing my TV (I'm guessing it was used for bitcoin mining, they were selling 4).Then being lower on budget, went with a brand new 270 (not x and only single fan instead of 3) for $90. That one works great and overclocks @ 25% like a champ, so other than the TV dead, its not terrible.
I wouldn't worry about running them for long periods of time unless they are getting hot. Sure running them at 100% for a couple years may kill them, but for gaming, you have to sleep sometime, and if your that into gaming, you probably buy new GPU's every year or two anyways. If you do run one to its death, you've probably got your money's worth out of it.
Biggest killers would be dropping, lightning or power surges, other electrical, spilling your drink on it, overvolting/overclocking absurd amounts, running them past 100c all the time, and then getting so much dust that it catches fire some day (not in that particular order).
+Jake Garrett lmao that's insane

How it feels to chew 5-Gum
Apple software updates. That's why..!
doesn't update
downloads the update anyway and sits there eating GBs of space
The Law Of Microsoft : The faster hardware gets the slower Windows gets.
My iPhone 4S came with iOS 5, and with iOS 6 it began to get slower, and then iOS 7 was RIP my phone... only 2 years old and it was incredibly slow, even after a restore. Now I have an LG G3, it's 2 years old, and with every Android software update my phone has actually been getting faster xD I'm pretty sure Apple slows down older phones purposely... they don't bother optimizing it, but they do the complete opposite. FYI I had a 3 year contract with my iPhone 4S so when my phone was really slow just after 2 years, I was pretty angry.
+ChrisTheAppleOne I swear dude! my lg g3 still kicks up to this day with the fulmics rom. no need to upgrade to a new phone anytime soon
Maybe actually read what people write before you shoot your mouth off. He wasn't comparing it to new phones. He said the phone itself got slower with every update. Which quite frankly they shouldn't. None of my Android phones slow down with updates. But Apples shit bricks always do.

Back in my day instructors taught how to code in ways that used memory efficiently.
I suspect that newer programs are not written that way.
I've been wrong before though. 🐰
Programs are really not memory limited anymore and memory is cheap so developers tend to use more memory if it makes development easier or if memory can be traded for speed.
The answer is diminishing returns. Sabe one mb of memory in a 16 mb system and is a difference. That same mb in an 8gb system is negligible.
Will my potato degrade over time and use?
how do you use it? please explain in full detail so I can assess the situation.
If it`s watercooled than you are good to go! Kappa
it will grow eyes and get wrinkly, does that count?
No, as it breaks down it turns into mashed potato, which is far superior.
not if they're turned into french fries at McDonalds
Performance degradation is caused by SOFTWARE, not HARDWARE. What happens is operating systems (more relevant to portable devices like smartphones) and drivers (relevant to video cards) over time get optimized for new generation hardware in determent of the old. This happens for several reasons:
1. It takes more time and resources to write software that works well on the full range of hardware, old and new
1.1 - it's in the manufacturers interest when old hardware suffers from performance degradation. Why?
A -> it's cheaper to optimise for new hardware only, even if those optimizations degrade performance on older hardware, and optimizing for older hardware as well as new would cost more man hours.
B -> performance degradation might cause users to upgrade, thus the manufacturer profits.
2. Older hardware may lack features new hardware has - by requiring those features, new software / drivers may degrade performance of old hardware witch lack said features.
There you have it. Example: - Modded skyrim with seasons of skyrim patch, verdant and 2k texture pack used to get over 45 fps on my old GTX 970 a year ago. Now, it gets about 25-35 -that's a considerable performance loss. Why? Driver updates. While the 970 still performs well in new games like Rise of the Tomb Raider (even better than with old drivers that perform well in skyrim), older titles get a performance hit.
Gimpworks even affects Nvidia's own cards.
No .linus did a video about that
However on "hot devices" that rely on fans will only get worse specially when the fans are always at top speed for long time and the thermal compound will also make it downclock more after it's completely dry and have worse heat transference...
Smartphones most of the high performance ones only run for very little time on max clocks and will downclock very fast.
But most likely you will upgrade your hardware before the thermal compound gets completely like a crap, so it won't probably affect much, but will certainly affect the devices that already come brand new always at near max temps...
Yep, Apple was caught red handed.
*Warboss Mowdakka* Don't you mean "in *detriment* of the old"?
I had a pretty strong feeling the idea of "performance degradation" was mostly psychological. You have the new hotness, and OMG it's so fast! Then you get used to things going that fast, new games come out that your card doesn't handle that well, etc, and suddenly it's "Man, this thing just doesn't perform like it used to." In fact, it does, it's just no longer the new hotness. It's the old slowness now.
I just threw one of those HP printers away this weekend, performance degradation is real on that printer damn thing starting giving me bluescreen errors, a tiny 3" bluescreen.
NVIDIA had a 480 6 years ago! AMD is trying to trick us!
no, I'm not retarted, just joking.
+YIC damn
but ati had produced various radeon graphics cards with 7xxx and 8xxx and 9xxx moniker years before nvidia ever made the 7xxxGxx 8xxxGxx and 9xxxGxx moniker....so if anyones done it first its nvidia "using their competitors" product moniker. even the 3 digit x### had been used as well prior to the HD radeon series. Which was directly during the 8800gts 8800gt era
I hope AMD comes out with a 4k card because 1080 just won't cut it for me... I'd need at least a 1440.
+deimosian dude even the 1070 can play ultra games at 1440p the 1080 is like a ultra 4K at 30 - 40 fps card and some games all the way up to 80 fps.
+Air stuff17 The joke went woosh
when a 6 yr old gpu is = to a ps4
LUL
Actually, it's equal to an Xbone, and both the xbone and the ps4 are far from new. The ps4 gpu should perform better than a gtx 580, which, imho, is still a decent card.
That is not to say that I didn't expect more power from that generation of consoles; 2X the Xbox's performance would have been just perfect, even if it meant a $500 price tag.
k.

so if i buy a ps4 is like buying a 6 year old pc? WOW i feel sorry for those who owe a console!

This is why my Galaxy S5 has cyanogenmod. Fuck Samsung and their touchwiz.
dude did you know iphones are operating off Samsung cpus
Ive always felt degradation was from a higher expectation over time, and expect our devices to do more, and when we put that "today" expectation on older hardware, we assume its worn out.
i want these old type of vids again
You could also benchmark a PC that's a couple of years old now, and compare to the benchmarks on that same PC when it was new.
Yes if you could stay on the same set of software, and have no software related changes, this that or the other thing, such as a newer benchmarking software, thne yes that would be reliable, however sadly all of that stuff happens and we don't have 2-6 years sadly.
Well maybe the peasants will finally understand what I say when I tell them you don't have to upgrade your PC every other year and that a PC which is more powerful than a console now will still be more powerful than that console in 5 years...
***** Objectively speaking PC is better... that's a simple fact... one of the consoles few strongpoints is ease of use and simplicity, I'm fully aware of that... is a console more reliable? I wouldn't say so, under the hood they use the same technology (though outdated) as PC's does and I highly doubt they use much server grade hardware... so no it's not more reliable... my only point here was that console peasants always say that "you have to upgrade your PC every two years but a console last for 10!" which is complete and utter bullshit and we all know it...
you are damn right my bro, damn right
I completely agree, having high end hardware can easily last you years, if you allocate your resources properly and don't go all out, trying to have the best of the best, when that is easily trumped in the next year. a Gtx 480 is still able to run games on medium at 1080p without a problem, aside from poorly optimized ports I guarantee my Gtx 970 will continue to run 1080p at medium 40-60 fps in 5 years. as well. Whereas in 5 years the ps4 will be obsolete and put on the shelf for the next generation.
I game maybe 2- 10 hours a week, i spend a great deal more time on my computer, so when i game, it's easier to just have a graphics card on my rig so i can game on it rather than spending an extra 350 on a console, that i'd only use 10 hours a week, when i could just spend that on a capable graphics card and turn my working computer into a gaming computer, so it becomes multi purpose. Everyone's scenario is different, my application may differ from yours, but i believe many people are applicable to my situation.
That is very true, consoles are a great alternatives for low spec computers that require a whole new build just for games, which are very costly. But in my case i already had a core i5 system with 8gb ram and a large hard drive, so it took some little upgrades, such as ssd, power supply and the bulk on the graphics card, to turn it into a capable gaming rig.
im still using a gt 620 with max overclocing
lots of bluescreens and now i started to accept 17fps as smooth
F
I think that a major cause of performance degradation that affects all cards equally from the moment they are made is quantum teleportation of transistors in chips. Because the transistors are so small, the movement of a single atom even slightly is enough to ruin a transistor and because there are so many, it happens fairly often.
are you high? ELI5 if you don't mind :P
Tf is ELI5? And why would you think that I'm high?
Oh I just realized that I meant atoms and not the first transistors
It's not really atom migration that kills chips, it's a combination of diffusion (the heat drives this faster and this causes the chip to fail quicker if it is run at a higher temp at all times) and the breakdown of the dielectrics of the chips structure. All transistors and capacitors (in the vram portion) use some kind, if not multiple kinds of dielectric to keep the electrons where they need to be to run the way it was meant to run. The voltage potential of the electrons tunnel through this material and can damage it, this is one of the causes for NAND flash chips to only be programmable so many times before failure.
Oh, cool! Thanks for telling me!
I had once a GTX 480. Man it was great to cook food on it or to use it as a heater in winter!

6:20 I love, when you are still professional even when benchmarking the chewing gum :D
Also, how are you supposed to overclock chewing gum?
Chew faster 😂
@@TH3C001 makes sense...
so he is saying avoid updates?
No, he said that they're the primary cause of performance degradation. Updates are usually worth taking as they keep you secure and provide new features. Perhaps, though, sticking to an older version of an OS while it still has patches coming out might make sense if newer OSes are harder to run. Driver updates will usually increase performance as will some software updates while others will slow things down.
keep your autostart free from trash
If the update is too heavy and degrades the performance of the phone too much you might have to consider going back to an older version of the OS. However with more powerful phone models such as the Zenphone 2 usually updates are welcome.
I don't know about him but I'd say YES, if your potato box is running fine then “update at your own risk”- specifically for windows update, (device drivers excluded ),
a seems faster to me than a ,
I remember it quite well, last time I enabled windows update service, Gta V started lagging as hell(after update obviously) ,
So I wouldn't update windows unless I've confirmed that it doesn't mess things up

Ultra gamers: DAMN IT! Why am I only getting 60 FPS on ultra High setting at 4K!!!
Brain Matrix I'm going to enjoy the time when I can move up to be able to do 4k ultra 120 fps for now I have to live with 60fps on low settings or console fps on ultra
Yeah.... i've felt somewhat like that at the start of the video.
"ooh its a 6 year old card, you cant find these new anymore. its old"
Dude... my motherboard doesnt even support one of these...
Paulo Mangano Really? Do you use a mobo with AGP?
@crsor Compatibility goes beyond the port. A CPU won't always be compatible with a mobo out-of-the-box despite sharing the same socket. Same with RAM. Old Dell mobos are notorious for being incompatible with Fermi GPUs despite having PCIe ports. Sure, a BIOS update would fix that, but that revision has to exist first.
Wow, look at Mr. Fancy pants and his whole 15 FPS! I didn't see 4 FPS on max potato settings till I was 3 years old and even now I'm still only pulling ~5 FPS. Thanks to the new RAM I just downloaded! Wow, honestly I don't even understand how you guys keep up with these kinds of speeds. I don't even know whats going on most of the time tbh...
Hi, I've worked for quite some time in the roofing and home improvement industry.
Roofs wear out, shingles eventually stop being able to hold water, ice-dams run their course, and underlayment goes bad. This doesn't mean that every time it rains, you'll have water pouring on your head. It means that in many circumstances you'll get a leak, and that this leak will become worse over time, gradually.
I advise everyone to ensure that they're using the highest-quality underlayment and shingles, and making sure that they're installed by a reputable contractor with a warranty that you can trust. Do not hire cheap, you will have problems down the line.
6:21 yeah they really did graph on chewing gums :D
You need several thousand units to make a clear scientific results. Also each chip is not equal.
There is no way LMG would do that. Close enough is good enough.
Well good thing he's not writing a paper on it then.
several thousand?! are you saying that you would still call the test illegitimate if they tested, say... 500 cards? We aren't testing a group of people here dude, the quality control has already been done in the factory.
Lol, it´s faaaar too trivial to do a proper scientific test like that. This test shows that, if there are differences, they are not down to time of use.
This test proves that not all hardware degrades performance, is all
Linus did mention that HDDs and SSDs will degrade over time, this a well documented phenomenon
Why do SSDs degrade over time if they have no moving parts?
The bits do wear out over time
SSD' s technically have moving parts. The electrons traveling between flash cells wears away at the storage speed.
the memory cells in a ssd can only be overwritten a certain number of times
+bokke vdbergh why is that? and why is speed degrading even if you use TRIM? RAM can be overwritten virtually infinite number of times, why can't flash memory do that? does it.. decay? burn? erode? I dunno.
Yup I've seen it first hand. My 120gb Mushkin drive from 2011 ran at about 400-500 MB/s in ATTO when I first bought it but in 2016, even completely empty, it hovers around 250-300 MB/s. The other identical drive, I bought the exact same day, just outright died last year.
That intro quote gave me some tech-yes vibes

It took me several minutes to realize he was talking about GTX 480 not an RX 480 ._.
Wait a second. Did Linus just predict that apples software would degrade iPhones over time?
BOOMSUNNYD
Lol I think so. Even tho it's a well known fact that they have been slowing them down. I realized that about 3 years b4 they admitted to it
Apple throttles down processor speeds on older hardware. Supposedly this has to do with the battery slowing dying, and that it can no longer keep up with higher performance. Makes sense, but I wouldn't doubt some BS about it to sell newer products. I've heard that once people out in new batteries, their phones speed up.
i just rewatched this video and wanted to say that you got proven wrong lol, ios 12 provided a huge boost to older iphones
@@koolsaxnoob Not really, my used Iphone 3 (yea it's old) did slow down but only after I updated the IOS system (not sure if it's called that, haven't been following apple products for years)
So yea it's not about hardware, it's about software.
@@koolsaxnoob Wait.... proven wrong... when an "update" speed up older phones? So like... when they removed all that crap that slowed them down that they added to begin with? How does that prove anything? That proves they did it more then anything else!
Wow this is real old.
You @linus tech tips need to create in 5 years a museum :D
How about Driver degradation?
Driver's are software so I don't know how that would degrade unless you mean companies degrade support for older cards
MarioDragon Pretty much what I meant. Kind of like a planned obsolescence idea.
Well I guess you can call it planned although it makes no sense to support hardware that nobody has anymore
I suspect this happens. Some features supported by older cards can and do get pulled with updates. If support is ended for some reason, they also avoid bridging features supported by older cards from newer standards. (Theoretically backporting is possible with a thin software layer. Something's up when stuff that used to work perfectly in OpenGL3 doesn't work anymore in 4. Shouldn't have to switch to a full software layer to do things, when it's just the way some bit of code is being parsed. If A is now called B, the hardware could handle it if software only told the hardware A=B. Would be faster and less bloated, but they don't do that.)
Only a problem if you're stretching every penny you get and trying to ride the long tail, if you have money to update and stay current - you'll never notice this stuff. Guess which side most developers are on? (Good luck with related bug reports.)
And the way it happens, I'd say it's often planned obsolescence. The hardware is still capable, but companies are pushing the new stuff and do what they can to kill it off on purpose.
Do you also wear a tin foil hat and live in a basement? Linus already tested this and the "nerfing old cards with drivers" is a complete myth. You could test it out yourself if you wanted. A lot of people have tested it and it really boggles my mind that so many people are clueless and believe that these companies actually nerf their cards:/
As I've thought for years, product degradation really isn't a thing. If you are always using the exact same programs, you won't feel a difference 4 years later. The reason it feels like our computers get slower is because our software is always updating and needing slightly better stuff.
Also the fact the we see newer stuff running faster so we assume ours is getting worse. It's like how we were all "ok" on our dial up internet until Dsl and cable internet came around, then our outdated dial up became slow to us.
Ya it's especially noticeable if you game. That card that wrecked every game you threw at it then needs a bit of an overclock to keep it maxing games, then you need to tick AA off, then turn down some other settings and before you know it your gaming on medium/low just to get 60 fps.
Well that's the way it used to be but now you can keep the same hardware for like 3-4 years at a shot and still have a halfway decent gaming rig ;p
when u pulled out the 480, my youtube changed the res of the video to 480p
My pc comes from 2012 (when it was basically top range) and this December I got an SSD, formatted my pc and now it runs good as new. It's amazing how long computers can last if you buy quality.
At 0:12 Linus looks like the dude in Blues Clues x'D
Personally i almost never experience preformance degradation, in fact i experience the OPPOSITE.
I often run with the same old hardware for 3-4 years, and yet the games i can play on the same hardware, keep looking better and better, at the same framerate.
Because software magic and innovative optimizations are what rules the gaming industry these days, NOT hardware preformance.
You can play GTA5 with great framerates today, which looks gorgeous, on the same hardware that 4 years ago that ran GTA4 at identical framerates (with much worse graphics and extreme LOD popin).
The real most common reason why people say they experience preformance degradation, is because they dont know how to take care of their machines or software. They bloat it with five different anti-viruses with expired definitions and constant real-time scans, while they somehow also managed to cram adware and malware on their machines and click "cancel" everytime its detected, while clicking on more porn site advertisement banners that night.
Thats why you see preformance degrading over time as you use your computer/laptop.
Not because the hardware is changing, but because your OS is getting jammed with shit that you dont take care of.
Naturally most people watching this channel knows about that, but im talking about 90% of people who just run to forums and yell "diz broken it crashes", without really knowing anything about computers.
gta4 is not a good example because of how badly it's optimized. Whereas gta5 was well optimized from the start and only got better from rockstar updating it.
Also, people fill up their ssds and don't know that that causes slow downs. nvme drives are better but they still suffer.
People that say that mining bitcoins on the card wears it down, has some serious issues with understanding hardware and electronics ... sigh.
If a card is bitcoin mining 24/7 pegged at 100% use for around a year, it does seem logical to think it would shorten the life of the card.
Not the card itself, but it does wear down the fan(s), since they're constantly spinning at a high speed.
I can vouch for that, Although linus says a gpu has no moving parts, the parts of the cooling that do move can eventually fly off and across you're room like what one of my 280X fans decided to do.
It will shorten the life of a card. Similar to the way overclocking a CPU will shorten it's lifespan as well as the motherboards lifespan.
Except the physical lifespan of computer parts tends to be dwarfed by their operational lifespan. I doubt anyone here would want to rock a core 2 duo in their gaming rig still.
6:47 About the mention of the roof, that is actually gradual. At the moment, I'm living in a house with a roof that is going to be replaced in 2 weeks or less. Your roof will continue holding up until the times comes in which it starts to leak during rain, and slowly, water pockets will grow larger & larger into the ceiling below, until one day, the drywall ceiling falls in. That happened in the one vacant room we had (such luck, tho!)
lost it with the chewing gum performance graph xD
Now I wan't overclocked gum.
can you show the gum overclocked
haven't you replaced the thermal goo on the card at some point. that should be considered aswell
while it's a gray area of what comes with a GPU - **good** Thermal Paste has an **extremely** long lifetime.
What an amazing sample size of 1. What a reliable study...
They never put the Amazon link in the description like they say... I want deals
Deals? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE DEALS!!!
Isn't it a well-known fact that Apple makes older iPhones run slower on purpose?
So that's why the Iphone SE runs faster than a Iphone 6 or 6s xD
The iPhone SE runs faster than the 6 because it has much better specs. It runs ever so slightly, but not noticeably faster than the 6s because of the lower resolution of the screen. Both the SE and 6S have the same specs.
How does apple do that?
This was debunked about a month ago...the UI slows down with new OS iterations, the performance does not actually decrease. That's where jailbreaking becomes attractive.
"Fact" is a very strong word to use for a popular opinion based purely on conjecture. iPhones get iOS updates until they are severely outdated, the same cannot be said about android devices. Each version of iOS has more features and takes more system resources to run efficiently, because of this, older devices won't run as well on newer versions of iOS. This effect was amplified in the past due to the rapid increase in arm processor performance and other advances in smartphone technology, which is likely why the rumor that apple purposefully slows down older devices manifested, at worst, it could be said that they probably don't optimize newer versions of iOS for older iPhones and iPads, nearly as much as they do for new devices.
Anybody got some gaming ink I can use with my printer?
Linus at al, you're doing an amazing job. Keep it up, you're one of the few channels of this genre really worth watching.
2:45 " It's so crazy to see such as old product in new packaging...". You've obviously not been watching LGR then!
Yeah I'm good I'd rather not watch a manchild open boxes
Here I am rocking a 550 Ti...while I build uber rigs for friends and family. If I charged I'd probably be able to get myself a friggin upgrade, but I'm too nice for that.
Fine line between nice and stupid.
+AntiHero R Yeah at that point he's being taking advantage of and doesn't realize it.
Now people will realize you do it for free and you'll be the first person to go to when something goes wrong.
AntiHero R Well, to be fair, I've stopped repairing people's rigs for the most part. I know I'm being taken advantage of, I'm just a softy when it comes to doing favors for friends and family. However, I also look at it as experience, since I'm testing different and newer components as well. So it's not a total loss for me.
BoogerLeader Gotta make them appreciate your hard work, or they won't take you seriously, I speak from experience.
When you get hyped because you thought it said RX 480 :c but still good :)
They should do a 480 sli video and see how it compares to a mid range system with more recent hardware. I actually have a 480 laying around and used to have a second and I think they'd still be able to handle more than what most people think they can. Right now they're actually pretty cheap too so I'm sure it would benefit someone.
Haswell-E 4.xGhz and 1.4V stress test with AVX2.
This will degrade faster than the currency in 3rd world countries. 'Nuf said.
1.5V and it will degrade faster than the UK Pound
Jesus hell, 1.4V? I keep my old ass i7-920 at 4GHZ on 1.293V. You sir badly lost the sillicone lottery haha
Rinkk Read again.
f4z0 welp, I have no clue at what voltage a Haswell-E is supposed to run, I am only used to overclocking 45nm chips like the Core 2 Duos/pentiums and Early i-series chips. Afaik some AMD CPUs come with 1.45v out of the box.
i5 2500k @4.9GHz and 1.460 V is running for 5 years already.
i7 3930k @4.71GHz and 1.420 V is running for 4 years already.
A CPU at stock speeds + stock cooler that runs hot 24/7 is likely to fail sooner than an overclocked CPU that is well cooled.
Kind regards,
Meta Custom Computers
I was like
"How can a RX 480 be 6 years old? 🤔"
Then I realized it xD
before i watch this im going to say software .
yep.
+Lightn1ng Reply selfie confirmed
new softwarew makes old hardware die
Agreed
High priority update, with free bug to slow your hardware down so forcing us to buy new.
I've known this for a while. So glad someone proved it and pointed it out.
When are we getting the gum OC video?
What the fuck is that swaggy ass motherboard!? I WANT IT NOM NOM NOM!
feed me daddyboard
what the fuck...?
bastard™ m9 just askin' for the mobo in his rig
+iPhynx it asus x99 give us all your money and your butt virginity white rgb edition
leevi moilanen holy shit that's expensive. www.ebuyer.com/662001-asus-x99-deluxe-socket-2011-v3-8-channel-audio-atx-motherboard-x99-deluxe and i'm still rocking that DDR3 RAM lmao
So... this means Adored TV's suspicions of Nvidia deliberately reducing the performance of their old cards to get people to upgrade must be true.
Didn't Linus already do a video where he found that old cards using newer drivers performed better than using the drivers that they came with?
except they tested this too, and new drivers have actually almost invariably resulted in better performance over time.
This is different...
This is testing old vs new gpus with the same model and the same drivers so this doesn't prove anything about nvidia "gimping"
Adored is and idiot and fanboy. Amd hold its performanse levels from 7000 series just bescause they still use GCN ...when they get rid of GCN youll not see fucking driver for old cards not to mention suport (hd5000 and 6000 dont have drivers anymore, HD6900 is still good card...)
Nikola Karovic Bro, it doesn't fucking matter. AMD is still using gcn and it means optimisations for really old cards. Consumers won't look at it and judge based on architecture. What they will see is consistent optimisation compared to nvidia on an individual card basis. Nvidia doesn't purposefully "gimp" hardware. it is just that their architecture changes per generation so optimising for old cards is not as viable as optimising for new cards
Seriously, are you reading my mind or something?
I was just thinking how great could be some vid. about performance degradation from you guys. Turned on youtube and first post on main page :D
Test this with an Iphone!
iPhone* you illiterate
oh... here I've been spelling it iCult all this time
EDIT: fucking hell youtube isn't letting me reply, +... does jack shit
+Jacob R I wouldn't have replied if I were you,, your joke is bad anyway-_-!
are you some sort of edgelord
Illiterate? You kidding me? It's just the name of a fucking phone (a not really good one to be honest).
Would love to see a CPU test
6:22 16GB of G. Skills Ripjaws GUM 2133 mhz
We are essentially talking about switches, they flip 0 to 1 or 1 to 0. If they cannot do it, the device is broken. There is no "almost 1" or "almost 0" in binary, it's either 1 or 0.
So the most common component of electronics (transistor) cannot slow down. Same applies to other components as well (bit more complicated, but the result is the same), excluding mechanical components of course.
SSDs can lose working cells to write/read, so that they are losing capacity over time, but they don't slow down.
I completely forgot the gtx 480 existed so I thought about rx 480 and I thought "huh? 480 isn't nvidia"
HD6570 here, still running strong, considering I can't afford a new graphics card right now.
I feel better knowing that someone out there has the same card :D
Rip my 7870 lasted many years. I'm back to my 5750 and suprisingly I can play most vidya that I want to no problem.. On low of course. No witcher 3 though...
Yay :D. I, personally, don't need anything more than a HD6570, nor do I have the money for something better.
HD 6870 here :D
You lucky i have an amd radeon 5000 hd!!!
Jacob Overthere seems like a pretty swell guy.
Happy Birthday! This video is one year old by now! :)
A nice bit of myth debunking.
sorry Linus, we can't relate to you and your printer needs because not all of us own a company
*THANK YOU*
Ok... so their advertising didn't target you personally. Is this your first experience with advertisement? Are you aware that LTT has a huge audience and their advertisements are going to apply to different parts of that audience? What the hell is the point you are even trying to make here? "Hey Linus, you failed to find an advertising partner on this one video that is relevant to 100% of your viewership and me personally!"
Backseat Rider ads always target me.
Good printers are fucking worth it, as someone who likes to invest in their tools so that they fuck off and let me do my job :)
Relates to me as I do own my own business, and yes a good printer is a gift from whatever deity you tip your hat to! (or don't, I'm atheist personally)
Great channel but intro music is too loud and bassy. I always turn down the volume during the intro.
Roofs actually do fail gradually. The leaks get worse over time. Usually by the time cieling drywall collapses, the roof's been leaking for over two years and a substantial portion of the plywood needs replacing and the rafters may be damaged also.
