Tesla’s new Matrix Headlights test 2 (in the mist!) - good, but couple of concerns.

- Always hard to film at night and camera never shows it as well as in person but here we give it another go and in the mist and fog (and drizzle!) it shows in more clarity how the lights work to give full beam and yet block out cars in front to prevent dazzling.
It’s good, a vast improvement over any Tesla headlight before! Reaction time is good, and crucially I’ve not been flashed in my Model 3 “highland” once, yay!
We should see it also come to 2021 onwards model 3 and Y soon too.
Two things for future software tweaks
1. To not be used in street lit urban areas?
2. To not be used when slow down below a certain speed and esp at junctions with cross traffic where it gets close to being caught out.
Otherwise though it’s pretty clever and very good. I’m glad “Tesla vision” seems to be improving

@@TrickyTree84 My wipers now activate when the sky just get a bit grey but absolutely no rain = EVERY time i activate CC/AP the wipers starts. Tesla = Tragic joke after 1½ year of "Vision"-virus with all sorts of newly introduced flaws by patches. As another example: "auto-defog"
I second the wipers. Did a 400:mile trip over the weekend, truly awful. Off when they should be on and on when they should be off.
Auto wipers stay on when auto pilot is engaged unable to deactivate, then wipers wipe a dry screen wtf

My former car was a Mercedes A205 (2020) with matrix headlights. The difference with my current Tesla M3 Highland is that the Merc lights worked far much smoother than the Tesla’s lights. However it’s the result that counts. Despite the smoother lights on the Merc I often got flashed but in the Tesla so far not once!

Damn the Model 3 Highland seems like such a good package! And I have to say, your video production has really taken a step up lately. I can clearly see the effort you put in these videos, giving us the perspective of other cars, pedestrians etc. Great stuff!
My M3 Sport 2021 bought from you guys last summer has just installed the update. Matrix seem to work well, don't come on in town if it's busy but as soon as you're on the open road they come on automatically. No option to force high beam on, driving back down my lane at home they didn't come on and flicking the stalk forward doesn't bring them on, only pulling into the flash position brings them on full.
Not quite as good as the ID.3 matrix headlights that I used to have (that was the only good thing about it) but it's a free upgrade and makes the car I bought even better - win!!

Thanks for the video. Having started driving in the 1960's with Lucas, Prince of Darkness incandescent headlamps on a Triumph Spitfire, I find modern LED-matrix adaptive beam headlamps to be extraordinary as well as endlessly entertaining. I sometimes go for a night time drive just for the joy of seeing my headlights dance. 🙂

5:45 I Got the 2024.8.3 update this weekend for my 2021 Model 3 performance and the difference is stunning…🤯 It’s hard to get them to work, on dim lit roads, until it’s a completely dark road BUT driving back the same road, in the other direction, they stay on where before they wouldn’t activate the Matrix auto high beams…🥺 So I hope we can expect some tweaking and fine tuning like you said…🤔 Between the previous auto high beam and the auto MATRIX high beam there is NO comparison ‘WHAT SO EVER’…!!!🫡
Hey Richard - Though it may be useful for you to know, driving home on Saturday 30th March in 2023 M3LR and main beam reverted to normal headlights even on dual carriageway when streetlights on. As soon as street lights not present then active matrix reactivated. Keep up the good work, love what you do. 👍🏻

My friends with 2023 Model Y, are pleased they will have more responsive lights soon!
They definitely made some changes with the beam pattern on the old model 3 matrix recently, noticed it was more spikey looking on the ground.
Will be interesting to see once the full update comes, hopefully within a few days judging by others.

Looking forward to getting these on our 2021 model 3. I found the spread on the Highland high beams to not be as powerful when I had one on an overnight test drive. The reaction time is much better now however it’s cars traveling in the same direction that are quite far ahead it still struggles with.
Does it fix it when the car puts its fog lights on when in front.
I find myself doing that a lot on some dual carriageways near me that are poorly lit.
Usually the car dazzling me from behind doesn’t do anything about it.

Got it on my Model Y a week ago. it works AMAZING, total gamechanger for nightdriving here in the dark Denmark wintertime :D Gotten ZERO flashes so far, so seems to be working well. Sickest freebee from Tesla. This is a 4K USD option on most german highend cars, and we got it free of charge. Thanks Daddy Elon!
Just had my 70reg model 3, matrix lights upgrade today, will be interesting to see how well it performs.
Received the update this morning. Will be testing out tomorrow on the french b-roads.

Great stuff! Can't wait for roll-out to legacy vehicles. Agree with all about wipers. Also, is there a way of using navigation to plot a return journey to include charging if necessary and %left on return. Even better if you can put in %required on return so it would work out charging options. Keep up the amazing work!

If you're starting from home, just set your destination as home and then add a waypoint for your far destination in the middle.

Great videos. Thanks for the 'down to earth' coverage. I have a silly question. My Highland main beam never seems to be 'on'. With lighting on auto, and adaptive headlights on, I assume, the car will turn main beam on whenever it can (especially from your coverage and comments) But mine seems to have a beam pattern that looks like it's dipped all the time. Any thoughts?

Personally i’ve been getting flashed quite a lot by oncoming traffic on the Autobahn in Germany during a 200km trip.
Plus, it’s not great at all recognizing trucks, and when trucks are flashing you back… holyy.
I feel more confident disabling the function unfortunately for now on my Model 3.

I assume the dip function is still there? Is it a button with stalkless?
I have had the update on my model for a few days now and I think they are responding just as well (in Belgium)

It's landed on my 23MYLR, they're really good
Last night (April 23rd) I drove back from Newcastle in the North East to Newport South Wales. The adaptive headlights are excellent. Long unlit motor way curves are fully lit yet oncoming traffic is in shadow. The lights seem to pick out gaps and signs to illuminate them. On motorway, A and B roads it feels far safer now as you can see so much more. The best bit is these will only get better as Tesla refine the software. One thing on wipers too, they have definitely made a tweak to them. Mine worked without fuss all day yesterday travelling up to Newcastle. They weren’t needed on the trip home in the dark so can’t comment there. The north east is slim pickings for supercharger locations. The ones that are there are slow and busy so plan ahead is my advice if travelling up there and back.
Got the update on my 71 plate M3LR to activate the matrix headlights. Not tried them yet though
Is the Matrix part only for the high beam or do they work on the dipped beam too?
I've now got this on my 2022 Model 3 with the update 2024.8.4. It certainly does switch to regular dipped headlights when there is street lighting, happened several times on my way home, the icon on the screen switches to dipped. It seems to take a few seconds, and maybe some tall LED streetlamps aren't bright enough to trigger it.
Many thanks for going out in those foggy conditions to make this video for us. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." where proof would nowadays be replaced with "test". (Please forgive my pedantry.)
I've read that update 2024.8 apparently brings this functionality to 2021 Tesla's and beyond? Is there any news as to when this might be coming to UK cars?
impressive, need to hire one for a week to see if i can overcome the lack of stalks and dashboard before taking the plunge, but i doubt it
Go into it open minded and acticely try to relearn. You will get used to it and will be happy with no stalks.

My 2022 MYLR just received the update while I was was watching your video!! Unusually it was followed by another update 2024.8.7 - perhaps to correct those bugs??
Our BYD Atto 3 has auto high beam (not matrix), but in urban (city/suburb) driving with artificial lighting such as street lighting it stays on low beam.
BTW, I have a Model 3 LR (early March build) on order since mid-January that is 3 days out from the port of Melbourne on a transport ship. So hopefully I'll get it in the next few weeks. Tesla even tell you the name of the transport ship it's on. 😁

Just to update. I got to try my MY with adaptive lights tonight. Very impressed! A bit weird at first with the shadow patch moving about but you soon get used to it. You can also see so much more all of the time. Excellent work Tesla. Now just sort the wipers out😂
Hi, forgive me. If this has been asked before, can you still flash an oncoming vehicle if they still haven't dipped their main beam as to say mine are dipped, but yours aren't? I hope that makes sense.

Yes, flashing lights (pulling back on stalk in my Model Y, no idea how Highland works!) Lights up the whole array and overrides any pixel deletion.
Crazy that they work that well when the on off function on my highland actually didn't really work... only half of the time.
Matrix update being applied to my UK MY23 Model Y as we speak. Very exciting!
UPDATE... Just tried them and they work very well. I went out at dusk initially and I'd say whilst it was dark enough for the dipped lights to come on, they didn't start their matrix functions until a few minutes later as I left the built up (lit) area and the sky got darker. It's as if they sort of switched from standard mode to matrix at that point (for clarity, I'd enabled them in the settings prior to leaving). Very impressed though. I've had them before on a Volvo V90 but these have a much higher resolution (more LEDs) and the effect when an oncoming car passed by is less distracting in Tesla's implementation because the beam returns more quickly and with less distraction - it sort of blends back into place without any fuss whereas the Volvo's lights had more movement in them which I found distracting. Overall, they're a big improvement. I got flashed once but - ironically - that was as I was leaving the built up area and (as above) I don't think the matrix function had started at that point. No problems though once darker and with oncoming traffic.
I can confirm that after 8000km of driving my Highland no driver has ever flashed at me.
I do wonder though what it looks like to other drivers. Do they just see a low beam light or do they see some movement within the light beam.
WAiting for 2024.8. which should bring Matrix lights also to my 2021 Model 3 LR 🎉🎉🎉

I don't see that my headlights is working I have 2023 MYLR. Opposite side keep flashing thier headlights on me what should I do?
I’ve stopped using my matrix headlamp mode on my Taycan when driving on motorways as I frequently get flashed by on coming lorries. I think it’s because of the central reservation barriers blocking the oncoming headlamps so the Taycan doesn’t see the oncoming lights but the lorry driver sits high in the cab and sees over the barriers and gets blinded by my lights.

I’ve done a couple trips this week and my auto wipers have gone from non existent to quite good, not perfect but a lot better then before, have Tesla done a sneaky update without saying anything?
I’ve a 2023 Audi Q4 etron with matrix headlights and continuously get flashed when my high beam is on auto mode. I can see it working away and dimming on coming cars etc, so it makes me wonder if they just assume I’m on high beam and they ‘need’ to flash me to remind me. I end up just turning it off and using high beam the old fashioned way… manually scrambling for the stalk.
Perhaps your headlights need to be adjusted downward a little. Matrix headlights can still require manual level adjustments similar to more traditional headlights. The automatic leveling feature cannot set the correct leveling baseline. I know someone who had a similar problem on his Porsche. His matrix high beams tracked oncoming vehicles correctly but the beam level was too high. I've got the same model Porsche with matrix and have not been flashed at by an oncoming driver a single time.
That looks like pretty thin mist, but in heavy mist or fog any matrix lights will fail to work effectively because of the diffusion of the light by the water droplets. They are best turned off in fog.
How do you flash these matrix headlights if needed when there is no light stalk?

Hi Richard. I have. Question and I am hoping your able to answer it for me as your a dealer with electric cars ( Tesla).
So as a growing family we are considering getting a model Y performance ( I want to have the performance because I know that if I get the LR I would end up wishing I got the performance as it’s both the same battery and stuff, and by driving the performance on chill mode am sure it would get the same efficiency as the LR)
My concern is buying the performance new, currently with all the packages I want it’s £63k and with FSD it’s £70k.
I am awaiting for the Juniper version to come before we get one but my concern is about the price depreciation. The last thing we want is to get it and the it depreciates really fast. Is it best to buy it new or used? It would be nice to buy it new as we want to keep the car for a long time. Most likely 10+ years etc.

The biggest difference you'll find apart from acceleration is the suspension setup. The suspension setup on the Performance version is HARD. The LR will be a pretty nice ride in comparison. You'll feel bumps and Road imperfections a lot more in the performance variant. So the added acceleration and handling difference comes at a cost of reduced comfort in every day driving. So depends what's important for you.
FSD not worth it if you are not in USA.

@@theoteam4641 in that case go for the Performance if you can afford it, you won't be disappointed 👌 Don't bother with FSD in the UK I'd say, save your money.
Be prepared mentally for the depreciation if buying new though, luckily I bought mine through my Ltd company so it eases the depreciation hit, but I plan to keep mine for 6-8yrs.
My 2020 Model 3 got its matrix update at the same time as my wife’s 2022 Model Y.
I would actually really dislike it if it dipped on an approach to an intersection at a lower speed. And it seemed to do a decent job with dipping cars passing in from while you were waiting.
Also, under street lights is it not easier to just turn them off manually?
But high beam isn't needed as one slows for and stops at an intersection. And people who reside across from a T-junction likely wouldn't appreciate high beam headlamps shining into their front windows. The adaptive high beam on my Porsche is inoperable below 30 km/h / 18.6 mph which means that it is off when stopped at an intersection. I am surprised that the Tesla doesn't do that. The object of fully automatic headlamps is to free the driver to pay attention to more pressing matters such as driving safely. Why require the driver to turn off the high beam when there are street lights if the vehicle can automatically do it? My Porsche turns off the high beam when there are street lights that provide a certain level of lighting but may not if there is only one lonely street light. I do manually turn off my headlamps while waiting for traffic signals at intersections if I sense that my headlights are irritating drivers facing me on the opposite side of the intersection. That is a courtesy common in Japan.
What i have noticed on other videos, and here too, is that it is kind of very slow, and this poses a problem when you have a car in front of you and it moves quickly laterally. Then you will beam short bursts of high beam into their mirrors.
I've noticed from watching these videos and from my own personal experience that none of these adaptive matrix systems are always lightening quick and that they do not always perfectly track other vehicles. Yes, preceding vehicles occasionally get short bursts of high beam light in their rear view mirrors but at least many vehicles have automatic dimming interior and exterior rear view mirrors. The problem may be greater when vehicles are not in horizontal alignment such as when ascending and descending hills. One CZcams video I watched indicated that the newer high definition matrix headlights do a better job of tracking vehicles that are not in horizontal alignment. A video I recently watched about Mercedes high definition matrix headlights showed them automatically adjusting to hilly terrain like the headlights of the Citroen DS did 50 years ago.

Tesla is slow as usual today and are mostly wasting resources at games, fart sound, removing useful stuff and that scam called FSD.

I watched a video recently of a M3 Highland driving in fog and because the car uses vision detection not radar none of the nearby traffic showed up and auto pilot couldn’t be used ……….. my old 2007 Range Rover Sport with ACC had forward alert that saved my life in dense fog when it detected something in front of me - an unlighted tractor and trailer - and gave me sufficient time to reduce to walking pace before I saw it visually about 30ft in front of me. Tesla vision system would not detect that in sufficient time
Allegedly release 2024.8 brings adaptive full Beam to older M3, & MY... Rollout of this version started on March 12th. 🤞

I`d love for my high beams to stay on Even with street lights, the more light the better! Hopefully they don`t Remove this, make it optional at least.

highland lights does not seem on par with older (2021-2022) model 3 lights
After having a 2016 Mercedes with proper matrix lights and a 2023 BMW with laser lights these Tesla lights seem pretty poor in their discrimination of both approaching cars and when following other vehicles, or indeed both. I always look at the performance of the lights on high beam up the near side verge in all three cases, also on both German cars you cannot dazzle at a junction because the lights are switched to low beam at speeds under 30 mph (maybe 40 in the BMW) so this is a major flaw in the Tesla, this also aids the issue you see with high beam on in street lit areas, and with pedestrians, the laser lights in the BMW are certainly poorer with regard to “intelligent” operation of my old Mercedes but going on your camera footage they’re a lot better than the Tesla. Personally looking at the footage I think the Tesla LED hardware isn’t particularly good and it’s being driven by fairly poor software too.
I hope they are better now, because almost every time I get blinded by another driver, it is a tesla 🤦♂
these are honestly just crap and far behind the competition lmao. My i4’s headlights are light years ahead. The mistakes are also amateur hour. Every car I’ve had with Matrix lights does not use high beams when there are street lights, and not when the car is traveling slowly (below a certain speed)

I have to say that I find the wipers perfectly satisfactory anyway. But my own experience aside, let’s not get carried away being dramatic.

2013? I thought matrix headlights first appeared on an Audi A8 in 2016ish? Were Volvo ahead of them?
LED headlights should realistically be banned, they are very dangerous. For 20/30 years we had perfectly good functioning headlights and there would have been no reason to even make this video.
