THE FUTURE IS BEHIND US // LYRICS
Stuck in our last season
Bite off our headless fever
Drifting and melting
We hope you gravitate
Please don’t wave back
I’ve severed (once again) in transparency
Please just sit back
Devour (once again) our broken disease
Kill the writer
Their eyes follow you
Open the closed off circle
Kill the writer
Their eyes follow us
Open the closed off circle
Sorry for the last week of bringing you down
My mind is to blame
My mind is to blame
What the fuck
Stuck in our last season
Bite off our headless fever
Dripping and melting
We hope you gravitate
Locked in a place of grief
I cannot find the proper balance
These odd rhythms, they are killing me
Yes, me and my brain
Drip and melt
Follow
I made it through
Sorry for the last month of bringing you down
My mind is to blame
My mind is to blame
What the fuck
Guilty memory
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Where’s the bottom?
Keep falling
The future is behind our eyes
Annihilate cleansing
Disrupt
Erasing
The future is behind us
Born of a dream
I am
Born of a dream
We are lunatics
Open wide and let the pill slide down
Sink away from your nourishment
Sorry for the last year of bringing you down
My mind is to blame

Those are some very white walls

Ahhh I see what you did there 😏
WHIIIIIIIIITE WAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLS
Well he does say “open the closed off circle” in this song. Coincidence? I think not.
Heh good one
I love how Dan Briggs is just not playing the same song as the others.
Hahahaha
Yet he’s absolutely holding it down lol
Haha he always do that and it slaps
My man just straight vibin LOL
Dan is the Man! One of my bass idols.
0:01 - We've become Dark Dream Theater, please don't mind
2:47 - Just kidding
4:09 - Shame on you for having that thought
Lmao
Dark DT is Awake.
I was just thinking that lmao
Don't compare btbam to dt
Btbam is miles ahead of them.
They're great, but not in the same realm as these guys.
Dream Theater is too goofy sounding. 🤓
They did it! They made another masterpiece that easily rivals Colors or Parallax 2.
This album is insane!
As a long time btbam fan I concur
I've been struggling with this, but after bout 8 full listen throughs, this has become my number 1 BTBAM album. It's just too good.
Automata never gets the love it deserves /:
@@ddrum1090 true that, my favorite too, I listened to it thru headphones once on ketamine and it blew my mind, I highly recommend it.
@@ddrum1090 I think that's because Sumerian completely fucking botched its release. By splitting it into 2 EP like albums it wasn't released the way it was meant to be. I don't get why you'd sign a progressive band and split their album into two short parts so it's more "digestible". They're a fucking prog band, anyone who likes them is used to listening to 70 minute long albums
This is why progressive music is untouchable. What an amazing song. This band just keeps evolving somehow.
@Dawn Razor don’t worry dude, I’ll give it what it deserves
Prog will always be on the cutting edge because instead of you hearing what you thought you were going to hear, we played something else loool.
Priiiiingles yoooou caaaant juuuust eeeeat ooooone!!!
The moment at 2:20 when get hit with the Ferris Beuller “chicka chik ahhhhhhh” might be the most random part of any BTBAM song ever.
I love it.
It throws me off everytime.
For me it's the airhorns in The Double Helix of Extinction. 2:10 into the song you can hear three airhorn blasts. When I first noticed it my brain did a 360 pop shove-it.
@@SaltpeterTaffy omg I'm just now noticing that
Idk, the random horse sound in Disease, Injury, Madness might give it a run for its money for most random sound in a BTBAM song
I'm a drunk Englishman at half 6 in the morning and this just popped up. I have never been so excited to see Between The Buried And... Me? Maybe someone else... pretty sure it's me. Good song though.
I'm a drunk American and I gotta say that their album Colors is what turned me on to them back in the 90s... I think. Anyhow, if you haven't heard that check it out... amongst others between the colors and this...
@@testrabbit close! 2007!
A drunk Englishman? What's one of those?

welcome to the great journey
It was so ballsy to make a direct sequel to Colors, but god damn, they absolutely over-delivered. An instant classic, a true masterpiece.
This video is SICK.
That is the most I’ve ever seen Dustie move, so much that he had to play this last tour sitting down to recover.
Yeah what's going on with that?! I kept taking pics of him because I knew I wouldn't even believe it later.
@@aplus1080 Dustie died before the tour and they had to get a couple of roadies to hold his head and arms up like a puppet to play for him.
Tragic.
@@steezydan8543 weekend at dustie's
@@aplus1080 I recall he was suffering from chronic back issues way back in the days of Alaska/Colors. Back issues ain't no joke.
Yeah wow he's still doing that? Crazy. I remember him sitting down because of back issues while they played over a decade ago.
Surprised it's not more common really. Standing in one spot for a long time for me is pretty hard, I can walk all day, but standing in one spot is brutal - add a guitar I can imagine it would be awful.
Can’t stop listening. Whole album is perfect. I feel like they’ve reached fully evolved form and are now more powerful than we could ever hope or imagine...
They learned the Final Getsuga Tenshou
The technical ability of this band is mind blowing while still being able to craft catchy and enjoyable songs. The new album is incredible. I'm going to be listening to it for the rest of the year.
5-6 times per day like I did for colors
Only the rest of the year? 😂😂
@@sebarel9728 lol I used to drive my roommate insane doing this with colors!
@@natewerk they really let them down themselves
@@sebarel9728 how much free time you have, bro?
I've lost count how many times I've listened to Colors 2 in its entirety. In this day in age it is rare when a band can write an album that is meant to be played through, from start to finish, yet each song holds its own weight. Bad Habbits is my personal favorite of the entire album. Nothing but positive things to say about this WHOLE album. Would love to see played Live!
It's rare to find a band with 5+ albums that are all amazing.
I love all the positivity they’re getting with this. They’ve truly out done themselves. 20 fucking years in
It’s really weird seeing this many positive comments in one place on the internet.
That "chicka chicka" at 2:20 had me almost spitting out my drink. hahaha
Most innovative band of the last 2 decades. These dudes deserve every bit of success.
😂
This is why they are my favorite studio and live band since Silent Circus. So good and effortless.
There will never be another Between the Buried and Me. What a time to be alive!
Colors 2 has exceeded expectation. They delivered in spades, every listen is better than the last, so many little details. You gotta hear it with good headphones all the way through. And then you gotta hear it very loud in a good system so that you can go insane to the heaviest moments they’re ever procured and then fall into yourself during the most beautiful. I’m currently digging Turbulent, the vocal hooks on that are so beautiful, but the entire album is incredible.
Definitely agree with you on this, I listen to this song and Turbulent as one song in my mind. This album is just so incredible
So true about the headphones. I’m a huge headphone advocate lol. They put so many little layers in there that are only truly appreciated with good headphones!
The middle of stare into the abyss is otherworldly too.
good advice
That’s always been a thing for me with btbam. Every listen seems to get better and better until the album is this intense euphoric experience.
BTBAM is such a special band. It seems like as I get older and my life experiences and tastes evolve and shape who I am, BTBAM is evolving as well almost in perfect synchronization. Unreal.
No man crosses the same river twice.
You can find 100% more meaning in this song than the writers intended if you want to.
Just listened to the entire album, and I am incredibly impressed. Needless to say, I loved it.
No way, I was just searching BTBAM, after not listening from them in forever, and found a this new music video!? Crazy coincidence
Even better, they released a new album today - Colors II.
Welcome back to the journey
And a new album! And dont you love that!?! I have that gift man and its incredible, all the time it happens to me. I think about a band havent heard in while, go and check and bam.new song or album. I think about a band or artist and within 24 hours they drop new music. Or happens w everything. One of my all time fav times is inwas talking To my son and buddy and said how I really really want a Last of Us tv series and it would be incredible if Hbo was the one to do the series, I legit go online 5 min later in front of them and announcement!Last of Us tv series is coming! And it's coming from and by HBO. We all freaked out itnwas hilarious. But yeah happens w me all the time.. it just just happened w me this week with silent planet, I felt we were gunna get new silent planet and I kept looking on CZcams and then new silent planet came .
One of the few band that can literally play any kind of metal.
4:30 seeing that split second of the spaceman floating towards the sun, love the reference!!
Holy shit great catch!
Between The Buried And Me, from the bottom of my heart: thank you ♡.
This is my first time watching this band. I never seen something like this before, so many things in one song, very creative.
If you think this has everything, wait until you explore their entire discography. (Year old comment - so hopefully you've done that by now)
I am completely blown away by this entire album. Exceeding my expectations doesn't even come close. Thank you BTBAM 🙏
dan Briggs plays two pianos and a bass at the same time better than I can tie my shoes.
This song kills just like the rest of the album. It's a true banger.
@@91earthlink you should be banned for this comment.
@@91earthlink did you have the video on mute???
I would place good money on you changing your mind in a few weeks when you've had time to digest the album more. It's that kind of album. Needs time to settle. Jut my opinion of course! All the best!
you know shit about BTBAM haha
@@BlueCrayon77 very true, btbam is the definition of grower haha
There is so much packed into this video. I’m catching “Jeremy” music video vibes if they were directed by Kubrick and sprinkled with 80’s Yes and Crimson. OUTSTANDING.
Some Bowie too

This maybe one of the most accessible songs they’ve put out that doesn’t compromise their credibility.
That’s a hard thing to do.

You're absolutely correct. I actually was a bit worried when I started watching this, just because it looks unlike any video I've seen from them before.
This is the least accessible song they've ever put out. LMAO What are you eve talking about? This is fucking weird even for BTBAM.
@@XGALAXYDRIFT3RX you have no idea what you're talking about
@@NotQuietRight Well i've been listening to BTBAM regurlarly for almost 20 years, i know a few things about the btbizzle.
It must suck for other bands when BTBAM release an album. It's like "there they go reinventing the game again". It's just their world and we are living in it
Seriously. It's insane that these dudes keep pushing forward after everything they've done. Colors and every album after it has basically set a new bar for the genre.
I hear a lot of influences on this. No doubt they're talented but it's not like they're all these miles ahead of everyone else. Check out Leprous for example. This also has a lot of similarity to some tracks by Haken.
@@iabdgogogo1234letsgo idk man. I get why you would say that if you'd only heard this song. But try listening to the whole album. And yeah it's gotta be the whole album as it's a "one song" album, like every album they've done since 2007. It's not like this track is their "sound". In fact, just listen to everything from 2007 forward and you'll see how they've moved the progressive metal genre forward. Essentially only Opeth, Meshuggah, and Between the Buried and Me are bringing anything new to the table. Dream Theater used to, but judging by the new single, that may not be the case anymore. Of course I reserve full judgement for after the album comes out.
And yes, bands have influences. Other bands might even have the same influences.
@@CheddarGetter so there's only 3 bands innovating in this genre? I don't agree. I don't necessarily need someone to employ techniques not typically associated with this genre, I want good songwriting and if it's interesting and somewhat unpredictable, that's a plus. And Opeth and Meshuggah sound like Opeth and Meshuggah.
@@iabdgogogo1234letsgo Yeah I'd probably say that currently there only 2 bands innovating in the progressive metal genre. I'd say Tosin Abasi is innovating, and he's progressive metal, but it's a different thing. Polyphia is innovating, but that's not really progressive metal. Meshuggah isn't really in the same slice of progressive metal as Opeth and Between the Buried and Me. I would say in the Meshuggah slice, everyone is still copying what they did a over decade ago. I'll acknowledge that Periphery has kinda spun off in their own direction. And a LARGE percentage are copying THEM. Of course I'm being a tad reductive. Some are just influenced by these 2 bands, obviously. But a lot do just straight up copy.
As you get into the more heavy stuff there are plenty of bands that are innovating. Same for the less-heavy progressive and progressive rock genres.
But like you said. Innovation isn't required for enjoyment. Just something engaging, that isn't totally predictable.
Lastly, sometimes innovation can just be setting the high benchmark for a particular genre.
The only band that its a appropriate to simp for
I've known about BTBAM for a long time, but never really listened deeply for some reason. Here I am years later appreciating all their material old to new. They are amazing musicians! Anyone else hearing Danny Elfman compositional influences on this?

Every album is phenomenal. Parallax 2 was the first I listened to
I've been so looking forward to this damn album. BTBAM always puts out music that I end up listening to for years down the road.
I liked that it felt more like a live performance with dan switching from synth/keyboard work, and bass guitar. Also the cameras to get more a 4k feel, and made the band pop out even more. One of the most creative music videos I've ever seen. This whole album for me is soo sick.

Everything must make sense in his head or you gotta understand the occult to decode the lyrics, lol. Haven't listened to BTBAM in a min. I've always loved the technicality of the music, the vocals are just a bonus, never really put to much thought into the lyrics besides some songs that stood out to me. If Tommy wants to believe man is god(Fossil Genera) that's his prerogative. These guys are getting old, colors was the first album I came across and the rest is history. Good ole memories.

I remember listening to these guys in some club on Walker Ave in Greensboro back when they had one album. I knew they were special then. I’ve been a dedicated fan ever since that first show and I can say they’ve never let me down. Only the foothills of Appalachia could produce a band that would turn metal heads into fans of jazz.

Had a woodworking project, spending 10 hours in the garage with this album on repeat the entire time. I can’t express how mine blowing it is. A true musical masterpiece. Layers upon layers of complex, groundbreaking, genre bending audio bliss. I’m absolutely in love with this album and just cements this band atop my all time favorites list. Straight Oingo Boingo/Mr. Bungle vibes and I LOVE it!
Everyone in this band is handsome as fuck
We used to listen to them as kids in Bahrain. The scene was pretty much non exsistent and I remember fucking dying to get the alaska when it was first released. We looked everywhere, asked my uncles abroad and no one gave a shit. A couple of years after it's release we were finally able to burn our friend's older brother's CD into a cassette tape (horrible quality) . We used to sit in my dad's car in the garage with my brother and best friend and listen to the entire album in one go, we did this ALOT, we would never listen to one song, it was always the album and funny enough, we didn't know what any of the songs were called. Track number 8 often got repeated the most :)
The point is, you guys did a lot for a lot of people in the most random parts of the world. Whether you know it or not, we idolised you and always remembered you.
That’s a fantastic story. Thank you for sharing
I was 18 in Nashville at Rocketown when Colors live was recorded. And never did I expect in that moment these years later we'd have Colors 2.
These guys. I don’t know how they keep doing it but they KEEP DOING IT.
I like to think that after Automata the boys were just like, "Well, what now?" and someone goes, "what if we did Colors again?" and that's what they did
Youd be wrong.
Danny Elfman: *exists*
BTBAM: And I took that personally.
I'm addicted to this song
This is my favorite video of theirs. The visuals and angles fit the on-edge energy of the song. And when the heavy riff kicks in (you know the one), all the lighting and camera movement while they're rocking out is just so cool.
The best part is when the visuals get dark and Blake starts twirling the drum sticks. You know shit’s about to get heavy when a drummer does that.
