Have you traveled from Europe to any African country before? The Air Maroc flight from Casablanca to Accra used to stop at Lome before it got to Accra. In Lome, those traveling from Morocco to Togo got off, and those traveling from Lome to Casablanca embarked. Then it headed to Accra and same was repeated. This was my experience in 2013. This practice happens in a lot of places. Last summer, I boarded a flight from Amsterdam to Uganda. The KLM flight first stopped in Kigali to drop off and take passengers headed to Amsterdam before it got to its final destination, Kampala. When I was going back, the KLM flight I boarded at Kampala had people already in it. So for example, KLM can fly from Amsterdam to Kumasi to disembark passengers and pick up those traveling from Kumasi to Amsterdam. Then, it’ll fly to Accra where those from Amsterdam will get off and others traveling from Accra to Amsterdam will embark. That’s what’s gonna happen with the Kumasi airport. Although there has been no proper research done, I believe that about 50% of every flight that touches down in Accra have passengers traveling to Ashanti, Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Western and Western North Regions. The international airlines know about this. The runway just has to be extended to allow wide-bodied airplanes to land and take off.

Well done. Too many ignorant people online. Anytime I'm on flight from abroad at least 50% of people on flight are from Asante and regions mid and North of Kumasi. People talk about stuff they know nothing about. Kumasi people travel a lot. 🎉🎉

Kumasi Airport does not need wide body airline to be an international airport. Does TAP Portugal and Turkish Airlines use wide bodies to come to Ghana? All that matters is demand, and there is a greater number of travellers to Ghana from Ashanti and adding some of the nearby regions can increase to 50-60% of travellers to Ghana.

So the big question we ask is "what went into the planning of making the Kumasi International Airport an international airport"? Maybe for now we should name it "West Africa Airport" and when we have eventually put our act together taking into consideration our capacity to contain flights from the Americas and European countries we can truly call it, Kumasi International Airport.

When you travel abroad most people are from Ashanti, western, bono and the northern only few from the coastal part. They are scared Kumasi will start seeing investors and developme t and they don't want that. Ashanti Region population is far higher than in Scotland yet they have three international airport. Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Small country with less than 5 million population.

I don’t understand Twi but I am assuming this bro is contending that the airport has no international status unless flights come in and out from the West. It is an international airport even if flights are only for 30mins from a neighbouring country. The issue in Africa is we like to add ‘international’ to most things for exclusivity. Not all airports in the UK handle flights to other continents however they will serve neighbouring European cities; Luton and Stanstead are a couple.

Many countries have their main airport having 2,300m runway length. The Kumasi one is going to be extended to 2,300m and that is long enough for every purpose.
Every Airport with 2,300m runway can accommodate an aircraft with more than 200 passengers.
Airbus A321-100 with over 200 passenger capacity requires 2,200m runway to take off.
