LYRICS:
Springtime is coming in the mountains
However on the hill where daddy lay
All the song birds are singing
And a robin built a nest on daddy’s grave
I planted dad a rose sometime ago
Oh the rose how it did grow
Springtime is coming I’m glad to say
And a robin built a nest on daddy’s grave
Oh the rose bloomed so red
And spread its beauty for that day
Then a robin came one day
And there she built a nest on daddy’s grave
Oh the rose how it bloomed
I believe the Lord is coming soon
That’s what the rose it seem to say
And a robin built a nest on daddy’s grave
And a robin built a nest on daddy’s grave

My dad passed in November he loved bluegrass life and everything and everyone had home services for long time he preached till his end . God bless you all
Yankee born from Kentucky parents, I have southern blood runnin through my veins. This music is deep in my spirit.
John (mandolin)is so unassuming, but put anything in his hands with a set of strings and he can bring the house down.
I remember while working in the school system when as a student John would often bring an instrument to school, and even then he was brilliant. For John Rigsby to not have been a successful musician would've been a crime against humanity.
Hes also a great guy.
My dad loves Ralph Stanley and he still does to this day, back when I was 3? i believe, dad was pushing me on the swing and he would play a robin built a nest on daddy's grave, wildwood flower, and one drop of water. Ahh the good old toddler days I'm 10 now. But I still love Ralph Stanley and rest in peace Ralph. Praise the Lord.
This will be lost soon... thank god I was raised by my great grandparents... I’d never know what I’d be missing
We sure do miss him,
My daddy loved listening to Ralph Stanley. He passed away in 2002 & there was a robin that made a nest on his headstone 2 years in a row. So profound.
On my side of the pond the robin has always been associated with death. in Irish lore if one comes into your house its a sign of a death to come. In English poetry its said to cover your eyes with moss and leaves if you die alone in the woods with noone to tend to your burial .
"Covering with moss the dead’s unclosed eye,
The little redbreast teacheth charitie."
And
"The redbreast oft at evening’s hours
Shall kindly lend his little aid,
With hoary moss and gathered flowers,
To deck the ground where thou art laid. "
and
"No burial this pretty pair
From any man receives,
Till robin redbreast, piously,
Did cover them with leaves. "
@@buzzcagney8096 beautiful, thanks for sharing.. my father is dying of dementia, and the day is drawing near... I find comfort each morning, listening to the robin, singing it’s beautiful tune each morning outside dads window... God bless
Ralph was still living when you wrote this in 2014 because he died in 2016, but everything else is spot on.
Amen
@@RedRoosterParty He was talking about his father dying in 2002, not Ralph.
Love seeing Doyle in the audience! Lots of bluegrass royalty in that room.
I had 5 brothers that played like that I was raised with music like that would not take nothing for it it touched my heart when I found it on my phone I praise the lord for finding it
Man if this one doesn't tug at your heart strings then those heart strings ain't attached to anything.
THIS is the song that made me love Appalachian music.
Long time Ralph Stanley fan, but this version of this song epitomizes "the Stanley sound". Precise banjo and madolin, great harmony, and that regular bluegrass beat.
+Lee Eshelman Steve on that banjo is one of a kind. Love the Stanley style banjo more than Scruggs. Would have like to her Ralph play this on the banjo back when he did. That would be something!
No matter how far I moved away from Clinch Valley VA in Tazewell county. I listen to Ralph Stanley he brings me back home sweet home up there.
James Price on fiddle and Steve Sparkman on banjo. I think Price nails the mountain music style.
A west by god virginian
Rest in peace Ralph. We will never, ever have a true, blue voice like yours again.Rest in peace, god take care of, allow to sing with angels....
Amen.
Respect for him and for you!
I've listened to Bluegrass for many years. I'm convinced there's a never-ending treasure trove of astounding songs to be found.
This is my kind of singing
That voice defines bluegrass.
Mr. Stanley has a captivating voice. I always wondered what he looked like, ever since "O Brother, where Art Thou?
A wonderful gospel singer and group.
❤❤❤❤❤my king
God bless Ralph Stanley not a day foes by without me listening to him sing about that glory land that's not far away
Amen 🙏🏻
I had never heard this song before. I really like it.
That'll bring a tear to a glass eye
I think the fiddle player should’ve gotten a round of applause as well for the great job he did on his solo, just like the mandolin player did!
