I just found out about kinnikuman from a comment section of a Hokuto no Ken video. They said before Kenshiro and Goku, there was Kinnikuman the OG Shounen. So here I am, and already you mention a new anime on the horizon.
It is kinda funny that Kuntaman is surprisingly the least racist looking from that Olympics lineup but then is immediately followed by Amazonman.
Literally made him have the ridiculous lips and made him throw a spear kinnikuman was wild
The hilarious thing is that they later had to get rid of Kuntaman, not for THE OBVIOUS REASONS, but because they thought it was a pun on “Kintama,” which means balls
And they immediately followed it with a gong for the Chinese Ramenman

Neptuneman, a Perfect Chōjin that HATES USING WEAPONRY, has HUGE SPIKES ON HIS OWN VEST that he literally uses as part of his signature move.
One dude is just literally a Russian Fighter Jet. One dude is JUST A BIG 1,000 TON WEIGHT.
And despite all that, Rāmenman starts as a psychotic violent murderer (ostensibly the most powerful of the Brutal Chōjin), grows as a character, becomes a trusted & powerful friend, a victim of severe disability & faced with not only losing his whole career, but living a life incapable & begins traveling the world like Dr. Strange just to find a cure...
And he still has a Fu Manchu & huge slits for eyes.
HE EVEN GOT HIS OWN SPIN-OFF, which is just his ancestor, VICTORY RĀMENMAN, who walks the Earth like Cain from Kung Fu & fights bandits. He looks EXACTLY the same as Rāmenman

Understandably, Toei Animation didn’t want to offend the grumpy Japanese bluenoses too much; which is why the Kinnikuman anime was broadcasted with scenes considered more appropriate for Japanese tweens (than for American tweens).
the irony is that it's kinda worse in the anime bc RamenMan essentially eats the guy alive instead (by turning him into noodles)

One of my formative memories was watching Ramenman literally fold Brockenman in half in the ring, then fold him again, and again, and again, so many times that Brockenman became noodle dough. He then sliced the dough up and cooked it in a soup and proceeded to eat the nazi noodles. He just ate a guy in front of everyone. In a later arc Brockenman's son tries to get revenge on Ramenman but they become close friends. This isn't really something meant for the human mind to comprehend.
I watched Ultimate muscle as a kid and thought Jaeger was cool, but his dad, Brocken Jr., was kind of nazi looking. He was nazi looking because his dad was a literal nazi who was folded over a hundred times and eaten by a caricature of a Chinese man. The wally tusket and dik dik van dik were perfectly normal compared to og Kinnikuman.
Brocken Jr also had a lot of nazi iconography to him including an image of him wearing a swastika t-shirt. It's just as the story went on the creators thought I'd be messed up if one of the main heroes was a nazi so they retconned him to be a generic German soldier.
Also fyi Brocken Jr isn't Jaegers dad. That's just something 4kids made up for some reason.

@@neuronoc.7343 As someone who actually watched this thing, Ramenman DID start out as a goofy, stereotype-ish character, sure. But that was back when Kinnikuman was goofy, and before the second Choujin Olympics which got MUCH more serious as it went on. Dude got his brain stabbed by Warsman and came back a far more serious character and strong ally of Kinnikuman. Ramenman straight up became one of the biggest stars of the series.

With Japan reairing the OG series on TV Saitama starting today every Wednesday, I’m wondering if they’ll keep all these scenes intact. Specially since this’ll be the first time since the original broadcast the raw episodes will be scene in high quality.
Ironically for as stereotypical as these characters are, it also makes for a diverse cast. Kind of like the Street Fighter series or the Punch-Out!! games
Yeah, and considering that Terryman is the most positive portrayal of an American in a Japanese cartoon I can think of, it is pretty wild.
@@MDonuT-of7px If I remember correctly many of the characters are also based on real life wrestlers. Terryman for example was based on Terry Funk as when he wrestled in Japan he was clean shaven and a baby face. It's funny considering that Terry Funk was a major heel for a big part of his career and had his signature facial hair here in the states.

so in terms why Kinnikuman didn't get an English dub was: Nazis, the royal Guard's of the royal family, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, a Chinese stereotype, and my favorite Native American headdresses.
and here's the plot twist: I AM NATIVE AMERICAN! GERMAN AND LIVE CLOSE TO TEXAS; but then again I am not surprised that Terryman was one of the favorites because of his blonde hair

There is also a Native American wrestler in the series named Geronimo, who also played into the stereotypes (tho interestingly he did replace Brocken Jr. in the NES M.U.S.C.L.E. game, replacing a German Nazi stereotype with a Native American stereotype). His name was changed to Beetle Bomb and he was turned from a Native American to a Brit in Ultimate Muscle. I always hated that change but now I understand why that change was made, tho still not a fan of it

Fun story, in Chile it was actually dubbed BUT never finished due the stufy being robbed

@@mightyfilm None of this is bad or offensive whatsoever, especially not Rats & Star. They even played at Whiskey a Go Go in the USA in the 70's and 80's with other black groups and they had an amazing time, no one was offended. In fact, they were all honored.
@@frog9304 I find it weird and hilarious, myself. Though the Kinnikuman bit was funnier out of context. I remember when it surfaced on YT the first time and it was just so random. Even in the context of the show it comes out of nowhere. And for the longest time, American Kinnikuman fans were just mystified that they didn't know what the song was and thought it was an original bit.
It did got a dub.. in Spanish.. un South America, this is part of my childhood.
And cut every scene of Brockenman (and Jr) 😂
In Spain it get also dubbed in catalonian.

If Kinnikuman were to ever get an official dub, it would more than likely have to be TV-MA and targeted towards an audience 18+ mainly due to the historical controversies of the story alone. You have to look at this series through a keen culutural relative lense to not be offended by some of the shocking humor. The issue however is how casual so much of the culturally insensitive humor is. With a dub you can make changes to the script to desensitize certain things, but there's honestly stuff that you just can't desensitize mainly due in fact to the actual intent of the animators. Japan really had no clue people in other countries would watch this someday lol.
In a way I think it'd be nice to have a reboot that would be easier to market or somn... as long as it was done well in the process.

@@DaFunk14 well technically it's had a few resurrections. The manga actually is still going as it got revived in 2011.
So maybe in the future it might get another anime. One can hope.

Also, it was *EAST GERMANY* that still acted pretty much like the Nazis when the country split in two, *NOT* West Germany! Even _Ring ni Kakero_ had the same problem with the whole "Germans = Nazis" thing (which I ain't amused by as I'm part German on my Dad's side), although at least Kurumada had the sense to change/erase the symbols in later editions.
Thankfully all nazi symbolism and references is omitted from Brocken Jr's portrayal in later chapters/episodes but he still dons a stereotypical German soldier dress
I know the creators were taking the piss but it really does boggle my mind how in the 80s they said yeah let's make a nazi hero

If it did get dubed in the 90s I imagine them obviously censoring the swastika and removing any frams where he does the salute. I can also see them removing the brazil wrestlers intro entirely and of course changing dialog. Stuff like the native American scene they probably wouldn't care. (Remember 90's)

It's kinda sucks because we don't see kinnikuman no more in united states of america because it's not huge no more not lot fans of kinnikuman & license issue. then not lot Merchandise & product of ultimate muscle maybe near future we see ultimate muscle making comeback soon but times will tell. But till then Cross my fingers if we ever see kinnikuman returns to anime.
tbh it never reached the popularity here it had in Japan.
American audiences were introduced to it through eraser figures, called the M.U.S.C.L.E line in the 80s but there was practically no context to it other than cool character designs and vague descriptions.
The original manga has never been officially translated and even Ultimate Muscle only received English release through Viz due to the anime being popular enough and I'm not certain it ever fully got translated either.
Ultimate Muscle - called Kinnikuman Nisei (Kinnikuman the 2nd) in Japanese - can mostly attribute it's success on a fluke really... since 4kids just grabbed dubbing rights to whatever was available at the time, and due to its already silly premise worked pretty well with their dubbing style.
It was even popular enough that Japan made a second season just for the American market.
Kinnikuman is definitely rooted in Japanese pop culture as being influential but its popularity there has waned overtime as well.

We got a dub in the 00's here in Chile, but sadly they dubbed just 50 or 60 episodes, so we missed over 100 episodes
We got Kinnikuman dubbed in Latam at least it was not completed but hey we got like 30 episodes.
Yes, it got dubbed in my country, recently I went to a Anime con (to compete in a Fighterz tourney) and I met the voice of Kevin Mask.
Brockenman and Brocken Jr were censoeed af, but all the racistic jokes were kept... yes, they even translated the blackface song.
