Maybe it's just me, but whenever I hear this aria, I always anticipate the sound of the first phrase. Hearing Ms. Price sing the opening line gives one a taste of what you're going to hear for the rest of the piece. Never has there been a soprano before or since that has sung this with such effortless nuance, beauty and freedom (and I've heard quite a few).
Where does one begin with this performance ?!!! Watch her stage presence as she enters and exists. She is absolutely loving her performance! Then, listen to every phrase. No one sings "fish are jumping " like that. No one colors "Daddy and Mamma" like that. Listen to the glissando on "good lookin'". Only Leontyne Price sang this aria with such individuality! And the portamento at the end....puhleeze! This was her artistry and this was her stamp on that aria. Others may sing the aria well, but no one does it better!
She first sang Bess in Porgy and Bess in a touring production in 1952, with her then husband bass-baritone William Warfield. The lullaby "Summertime" is sung by a young mother, Clara, to her baby. It's at the beginning of Act one. Bess sings the reprise in Act 3. Price has also sung "My Man's Gone Now," sung by Serena. I only heard Price sing this lovely aria in concert. She was wearing a glittering red gown with matching turban. I shall never forget it. s.abcnews.com/images/Entertainment/200210_vod_orig_leontyneprice_mix_hpMain_1x1_992.jpg
