- Hey everyone! Here's another exciting episode detailing our 3,000 mile trip through Southeast Alaska on our 37' sailboat, Maya.
In this episode, we are on 46 days in and 1174 nautical miles traveled since leaving our homeport of Anacortes, Washington.
We start the episode in Gut Bay, Baranof Island- headed North to our next major destination: Sikta, AK (population 8600).
Along the way we going shrimping, find natural hot springs, lots of grizzly bears and humpback whales- we even change our Nature's Head Composting Toilet! Never a dull moment aboard SV Maya! All of that and more in this episode.

Awesome
I had a natures head and absolutely loved it. Best marine head for a smaller sailboat. I have cruised the same waters two separate times totaling around 10 months. Your videos do a great job highlighting a few of the best memories I have.
Production value is only getting better. You have great story telling, without manufactured drama. I appreciate that.
Oh thank you so much- really appreciate the kind words. We're always trying to improve so it means a lot to know that it shows. Thanks again 😀
It was great meeting you too at Warm Springs. See you in Anacortes 😊❤.
Hey hey! Likewise! We drive past your boat all the time in Anacortes!
I empty mine into the bag right at the toilet base. So easy and no mess. Bag over the top and flip upside down.
Exactly! Love the composting head for a boat- sooo much better than a traditional marine toilet and holding tank!
Amazing greatly done
Appreciate ya watching and commenting!
Loving your videos! Thanks
Thank you! We love to share!
Those bath houses are a cruisers DREAM 😍
We soaked A LOT while we were there. Truly an oasis!
Another great one! I am looking forward to one day sailing from our home port of Seattle up the Inside Passage.
Thanks so much! It's a great trip- when you go give yourself lots of time... it's a long ways up there and there's lots to see and experience along the way.
Love your drone shots! Spectacular scenery!
Alaska is like cheating for photography! Thanks so much for your comment and for watching!
Good work on Prawns, hot springs a must whenever we are in AK. Glad you got to experience!
Those hot springs were utterly amazing. Out of this world.... as are fresh prawns on the grill with butter and garlic 😍
Nice one.
Thank you! Cheers!
God I love it guys ♥️♥️ those bath houses and hot springs looks like they hit the spot ♥️ had to post before the composting head segment just in case 🤣🤣🤣
Nice tidbit on navionics.. going to go play with that now 👍👍👍and all good regarding Bunnie ^^
Those hot springs were beyond words..... especially since we don't have a hot water heater on the boat.... Alaska is a cold place!!
@@CruisingMaya aye we have a hot water tank that can use shore power or a heat exchanger with the engine and I kinda thing if we go north it will be a much loved item.. hot showers however quick are awesome :)
I forget do you guys have a diesel space heater in Maya? If so did you like it? If you used another system or none at all, what was your .02? If I can ask...
@@AfterDeath1986 we have a solid fuel heater and, while it does heat up the boat, it's a pain to keep going. Next time, I'm going with a diesel heater. Would have been so nice to flip on the heater first thing in morning... especially on those cold wet mornings.
@@CruisingMaya thanks for insight guys 👍 coffee is on me if ever we meet :)
Another great video you guys!
Thanks so much!
Incredible beautiful story, the landscape is amazing beautiful. Greetings from the most beautiful romantic island 🏝of Kauai, Hawaii ! 30 living in the middle pacific ocean. I like it Alaska very much I sailed ⛵in Alaska too. Super cool. Good like guys ,thanks for sharing. Fantastic videos and the beauty of Alaska
Thanks for following our journey! Hawaii sounds lovely!
I absolutely LOVE your vids! I came across them recently and have really been enjoying your travels and adventures on Maya. The scenery has been spectacular, too. I have NEVER been sailing so I'm quite green in that department. I see you use a compost toilet, but how do you handle Disco toilet needs when you can't get to shore for her? I'm playing the guessing game on this, but am wondering how you manage her needs on board in that regard. Thanks so much and I look forward to following your adventures.
Hello and thank up for the lovely comment! We have disco trained to go on the deck of the boat. We have a raw water pump that we spray down the deck with, which works great!
Beautiful place ...thanks from the uk.
Very cool to have a viewer from across the pond! Thanks for watching- we appreciate your viewership!
Castiron frypan, I was wondering if any sailers used cast cookware. Glad to see that you do. I am thinking of retiring to a Sailboat if a few years and doing Alaska from California then to the east coast.
Don't leave home without a cast iron pan! We use ours daily!
Awesome video!!
Appreciate ya!
Wow, so gorgeous, great video!
Thanks for watching- we appreciate it!
You didn't go ashore and play with the bears!
Nope- we didn't want to be dinner!
At what depth do you guys generally set your shrimp pots? Deep for shrimp shallow for crabs? And WOWWWWWW on the hot springs and even those free hot water bath tubs. I cant even imagine how amazing it must feel to get off the boat and jump into a nice fresh hot bath. Great episode guys!!!!
For shrimp we are generally in the 200-300' depth range. For crab usually no deeper than 50'.... ALTHOUGH we have heard that crab are usually deeper in AK due to the otters- otters love crab and can clean them right out of shallower depths. Cant confirm that bc we didnt fish for crab deep, but wanted to share that.
And yes, that hot water was heavenly (we dont have a hot water heater aboard Maya so it was extra great). As always, thanks for watching we appreciate you following our journey.
@@CruisingMaya Thanks for the reply and the confirmation on depths. That's really interesting about the otters. I'd have never guessed but it makes total sense now that you mention it.
@@timnoneya811 we were surprised at how hard it was to catch crab up in AK- Sounds like it was both time of year and us fishing shallower depths (under 50'). There were also a lot of otters so I think the deeper water theory could be right.
@@CruisingMaya We were there right after you, but took a different route. There are zero crab when you are seeing lots of sea otters - confirmed by local fisherfolk. In other areas of the inside passage, there were no sea otters (don't know why), but we were successful crabbing in 20-30 feet.
Great episode guys! I love Alaska, I used to guide out of King Salmon but I have never been to S. E. AK can’t wait to go in a few years. It is so beautiful. I am cruising to the S Pacific in the Spring and will drop into AK on the way back to the West Coast US in a year or two. How do you like your Portland Pudgy? Can you get it on deck for offshore sailing? Thanks, Ben S/V DAWN
Ahoy fellow cruiser and thanks for your comment! SE AK is amazing! So much natural beauty and just straight up wilderness- something that can be hard to find in the world today.
We love our pudgy- it takes a lickin' and keeps tickin'. I couldn't imagine doing this trip with a dinghy that I had to worry about scratching paint or blowing a hole in it. We store the pudgy up forward on deck and hoist it up with a halyard and winch. Two person job, but only takes about 15 minutes. Thanks again for your comment- safe travels and cheers!
Hi there! I was wondering if you put toilet paper in your compost? If so, what type? Love the videos! In Bellingham and planning our trip up north soon on a Freedom 33 Cat Ketch!
Hello! Great to hear you've got an Alaskan cruise on the horizon!
For our composting toilet we use regular toilet paper- usually the nice stuff because.... why not....
Thanks for the comment and for watching! Cheers.
Compost toilett waste could go in nature?
Yes, the waste can be buried in the ground a few hundred feet from any water sources. We've actually done this when we did our boat trip around Vancouver Island.
I thought it was ok to discard the coconut husk waste into the water?
I think it would probably be ok when you are miles off shore, but I don't think you're supposed to pump out in interior waters.... could be wrong- not sure. We just bag it and throw it in the trash when we are in town. For what its worth, we love the composting head- wouldn't have it any other way.
is there no wind in alaska?
There's wind up there and we did sail.
