    I attended 70,000 Tons of Metal earlier this year, back in Jan/ Feb. Blind Guardian was on board, and I had never heard of them before, but I was aware there was a ton of hype for them. Holy crap, they were amazing! And they basically had a sing along for Bard song. I met them afterwards in a meet and greet as well, super cool dudes.

  • @nikolasmichaelides9444
    @nikolasmichaelides9444 Před 3 lety +20

    Blind Guardian and the crowd have a symbiotic relationship. For example, I do not think they ever actually sung the whole "The bard's Song" live. I would bet they do not even remember all the words anymore. Just the opening lines, and then they sit back and enjoy the performance.

    You can tell how legendary a band is by how loudly the audience sings along!

  • @tinudur2284
    @tinudur2284 Před 3 lety +75

    Well the peoples I know call Blind Guardians style Bard Metal. The crowd participation on the live album Tokyo Tales is so good.
    But the most legendary crowd participation is "Valhalla" in the video from the "Imaginations Through the Looking Glass" Tour. When you think the song is over continue to watch. The expression on Hansis face as he wondered whats going on is priceless. The tale is that the crowd is still singing to this day. Man how I wish I could have been there...
    Song recommendation... well there is a lot... from the early speed metal days clearly "Majesty", "Banish from Sanctuary", "Welcome to Dying", "Traveler in Time", "A Quest for Tanelorn", "The Script for my Requiem"... any one of these songs is a banger and a chorus to sing along to.
    The whole album Nightfall of Middlearth is such a big tribute and is worth listening to as a whole. Another song to react and... sing along to from this album is "Nightfall"
    For slower songs like the Bard song with folk touches "A past and future secret" (based on a book about king arthur), "The Lord of the Rings", "Skalds and Shadows" and my personal favorite" Curse my name" (based on a medieval book that is themed around to hold nobility responsible infront of the law) the middle part of the song when layer after layer comes in and builds up..
    Over the years Blind Guardian added more and more symphonic elements into their songs. A highly recommendation is the 14 minute epic "And then there was silence" which is about the fall of Troy. "Wheel of Time" is another great song with some oriental touches to it which covers the epic book series wheel of time. I recommend for both songs the album versions, probably lyric video. I have not seen a good live video.
    And as nerds as Blind Guardian for sure are they have an ingame concert song "Sacred Worlds" in the game Sacred 2. "Children of the Smith" is also dedicated to the game The Dwarves which is based on a book series by german fantasy author Markus Heitz. Blind Guardian are fans of the books and met the author. Markus Heitz was in close contact with the developers of the game and so developers asked if they could use a Blind Guardian Song in their game. Markus Heitz called Blind Guardian making the request and Blind Guardian basically said yes, but we make you a new song (with a symphonic orchestra and a whole choir).
    The latest album which is pure orchestra concept album no eguitar, no bass, no drums, just Hansi singing is based also on one of the books of the german fantasy author. The album continues the story of the book. The idea of an orchestra album and the music material was about 20 years in the making. Its something totally different. controversial but I love it. To me its a showcase that they could do music for a tv show or a movie. Two official lyric videos "Point of no return" and "This storm". Personally I prefer "This Storm".
    Well I think there is more but this gives some insight into the band and I hope they get more attention as they clearly deserve it but most important their music deserved to be heard.
    Thank you for your reaction.

    Super happy Hansi/Blind Guardian get a 'full treatment'. There are so many 'smaller' bands that often get overshadowed by the bigger ones (not calling Blind Guardian small, but you hopefully get what I mean). Blind Guardian deserves more attention on social media for the long time they've been around and work so hard still. On that note, I hope Kamelot will get the full treatment too by a very special person 😉

    Yeah, one of the more unique things Blind Guardian is known for is André pretty much constantly playing lead-work under Hansi's vocals. He also has a style of playing rather classical sounding melodies. As such, it doesn't really come as a surprise that he's a big fan of and largely inspired by Brian May. Hansi is also very much inspired by Freddie Mercury in his singing, and the way he layers his vocals in studio recordings, which is another staple of Blind Guardian. So you could say Blind Guardian, in many ways, is basically the Queen of power metal, heh.
    You might've also noticed the video in this one was cut from several different shows during one of their tours a few years back (though the audio is obviously just from one show). That's why the video looks kinda jittery at times.

    I love them. And Hansi's voice is magic! He said that he is inspired with Freddie Mercury and Ronnie James Dio. What a combo! The God landed those three on the Earth to take us breaths away every time we hear their songs.

    Blind Guardian is one of my all-time favorites. Nightfall in Middle Earth is such an amazing album. I really admire how they evolved over time from a basic speed metal band to epic power metal bordering on prog occasionally. I wish there was a video for "Sadly Sings Destiny." That's a helluva song. Hansi sings most of that second verse down an octave from the original recording (makes sense, it's live and he used to rip his voice apart trying to always stay true to the recording). He's really improved and become a stronger live singer over the years.

    Olbrich really isn't talked up as much as he should be as a guitarist. That's probably because he doesn't do too much super flashy technical things, but his ability to just string along great melodies is top tier.

    • @PsycHoOone
      @PsycHoOone Před 3 lety +3

      Yeah, that' what I found most impressive to the first chorus. Those 110% Wah-Wah-Pedal leads switching into Power Metal Riffing for the chorus and after the chorus in this even heavier style (sorry, I'm no guitarist)...it's just rad!

      Yes. It's very memorable and easy to sing along to.

  • @theicedevil
    @theicedevil Před 3 lety +46

    Andre is a very underrated guitarist. He has a uneque style that is all about serving the song and never serving his own ego, like how most lead guitarist perform. He is never about ripping technical solos. His solos are always melodic, in a lot of cases you can sing along with them. It's one of the stand out component of Blind Guardian that make them uneque sounding, and that in part is all thinks to Andre's lead guitar work.
    Yes, you need to go see this band live. They rarely tour the States so it's a special event every time they tour here, so don't miss your opportunity if and when they come by. They are a very fun band to see live. It's even better if you get to know their music. I know you want to save them for reactions, but this band is a sing along with kind of band. Every song they write is designed to sing along with and that is part of the fun and excitement of going to a Blind Guardian concert. They always play the classics. The older songs are always a hit with the audience, and these three songs are a live staple of the band.
    Also, to answer your question, this song, Mirror Mirror, is from their album, Nightfall in Middle-Earth, which is a concept album based on Tolkien's book, The Silmarillion. It's one of their most popular albums. Go listen to that album from start to finish. Also, check out their album "Imaginations From The Other Side", which is by far the bands heaviest album. These two albums are by far my favorite two albums from the band. I also would like to point out that on both these albums they worked with producer Flemming Rasmussen, who is famous for producing Metallica's "...And Justice For All", "Ride The Lighting", and "Master of Puppets" albums.
    Make sure to check out Demon's & Wizards, side project band of Hansi (Blind Guardian) and guitarist Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth). They sound like a perfect blind of Iced Earth and Blind Guardian. Listen to their song "Fiddler On The Green". It's literally on my list as one of my top 10 favorite song of all time. Check out "Fiddler on the Green - Live at Wacken Open Air 2019".

    I made this comment on your last video, but they really do love these big, grand, crowd oriented songs during their live shows. A trademark of their albums is much a part of what you see here. The studio album chorus' sound like a hundred people singing and chanting, and because of that the songs lend themselves really well to allow the audience to participate as you have mentioned in this video and the previous one where you reviewed The Bards Song and Valhalla. Having seen them live, it's every bit of what you have said about being blown away by the crowd participation. Now go check out the Wacken performance of The Gunslinger by Demons and Wizards. I've seen Blind Guardian twice at festivals. 2002 at Wacken Open and man that was amazing. They ended the festival then. Other bands I saw there was Edguy, Kreator, Exodus, Bruce Dickinson and Savatage among others. Our neighbours at the camping were german and they had a rebuild firetruck and invited us for bbq every night. But that Blind Guardian concert was the highlight of the decade for me! I also saw Blind Guardian on Sweden Rock 2003 but it was in the middle of the day so not AS fantastic but man they are so good live.

    New to this here. Fun FUN channel man. Blind Guardian is my #1.5 fave band, behind only Maiden (by .5!) I am in Canada, but have been lucky enough to catch BG bout 26times now. Top shows being Blind Guardian open Air in 2003, and 70,000 Ton of Metal 2015. They are RIGHT there with Maiden for greatest Live metal bands to see. DO NOT miss them when they come remotely near ya! Haven't dug too deep into your vids yet, But give And Then There Was Silence a go, if you have not, THE most epic song they have ever done... Cheers!

    Mirror Mirror was von the Nightfall in Middle-earth, which was about the Silmarillion. The Silmarillion was a pre story to Lord of the rings.
    Somewhere far beyond was great too. They'll be on a tour to celebrate it's 30th bday. That one was about the Dark Tower books, if I'm not wrong.
    They rly are one of the best live bands and i've seen plenty.
    I can also recommend live versions of older songs, like Banish from sanctuary, Lost in the twilight hall and so on. More speedmetal than powermetal but still very very melodic.
    But what you rly should try is their "Imaginations through the looking glass" DVD. They played two whole sets on their own festival.

  • @aleksanderdomanski222
    @aleksanderdomanski222 Před 3 lety +5

    That song is based on early parts of Silmalirion book. Book is kinda whole history od Middle Earth. Lord of the rings ale a minor episode (3 pages at most) in that book. And whole "nightfall story is placed way earlier than LOTR. It explains how and why elves ho to the Middle Earth on the first place and why it is wat it is. And it (whole album) is worth listening at once cos it is complete storytelling.

    The amazing thing about André is that his guitar stuff isn't even all that technical. There's no fancy sweeps or 8-finger tapping or any of that humbug. Just lots of Hammer-on/Pull-offs, shittons of Wah and an awesome feeling for melodies. And shredding.

    My inner elf was waiting for this so bad. Early BG faster and shorter songs like valhalla, highlights: the last candle, run for the night, traveler in time. Post nightfall on Middle-Earth, longer songs with more orchestration and mid paced, highlights: wheel of time, and there was silence.
    Can't recomend other songs from nightfall cuz they all so good jajaja.

    @nimedhel09 Před 3 lety +5

    And Then There Was Silence needs to be your next reaction, hehe. One of my favourites from them is Wheel of Time (you guessed it, talking about the series of the same name, hehe).
    And yes, we do love some power metal inspired by works of literature. And I feel like all their songs, or at least most of them, are super catchy and sing-along-y, haha! I really want to see them live one day. That'd be soooo cool.
    Oh, you ought to listen to Kamelot - Elizabeth (part I, II and III) live with their former vocalist Roy Khan. You'll definitely love it. And then, Sacrimony live feat. Alissa White-Gluz and Elize Ryd from their latest live DVD. Tommy is super cool (you already heard him with Ayreon). I think the band is power symphonic metal? Or something? Someone correct me if I'm wrong! I'm a noob at knowing the genres of bands (I just know if I like the band/song or not, and that's all that matters to my ears, lol).
    Talking about Ayreon, they have published the first 3 singles of the new Transitus album. Tommy and Simone (from Epica) are part of it! And I'd really love to see your reaction of Valley of the Queens from the Universe live.
    I have a suggestion for you and your reactions: maybe, like you Nightwish Wednesdays, you could have a day dedicated to lesser known or lesser reacted to bands? It's just a suggestion, of course, so if you don't feel like it's something that's right for your channel, I'm totally ok with it, hehe.

    Blind Guardian is one of those rare bands, that sounds much better live, than on the records. My friends feel the same. On the record, I feel that they are somewhat restricted and they are plaing in artificial environment, maybe even over playing a bit, but on stage, they are like unleashed. Tones and sounds are richer, deeper and more powerful. Add to this, wonderful crowd and athmosphere, and you have a perfect live concert. They can't recreate this sound and feeling in the studio.

    So the next Song you should react to is some newer stuff.. They teamed up with the (now defunct) game company Ascaron and made an ingame concert for their game "sacred 2". But i would recommend to react to the live version or the album version. the did a cool video with ingame graphics but it didn't age that well.
    And since you are on the road to power metal there is three things you definitly need to do...
    1. check out some other great european power metal bands like Helloween, Gamma Ray, Dream Evil, Hammerfall, Grave Digger,
    2. hansi teamed up with Jon Schaffer from iced Earth (a band that is definitly worth a listen too) as "Demons and Wizards" Basically its iced earth gitars combined with Blind Guardians voice
    and 3.... Come over to Germany on first weekend of August when there is the W:O:A, the biggest metal festival in the world... and pick a year when BG is headliner... being there among 80.000 metalheads and singing the bards song is pure magic, you won't get more metal than this...

      Quick follow up based on your question about Mirror Mirror, yes, it IS on nightfall on Middle Earth, but Hansi's on record as saying that it was left over from the Imaginations recording sessions and went in because they didn't want to waste it.
      But it makes more sense in the Imaginations storyline. Much more sense.
      When you've got more BG experience under your belt, Legacy of the darklands is a must...

    I discovered them with "somewhere far beyond" and there were a few times when I thought they lost their touch for power metal, but that changed and they are stronger now than ever before. And I just love Hansi`s voice. From a german standpoint it`s cracy that there are 3 or 4 german singers in the power metal genre that would be in the competition for best power metal vocalist: Hansi Kürsch, Michael Kiske, Andy Deris and Toby Sammet and I´m sure I forgot a few other great ones here.

    Two other great german power metal bands were mentioned in the chat, Helloween and Gamma Ray. Stuff from last years is particularly interesting, because the band reunited with most of the former members. Including all three singers. I Want Out czcams.com/video/gpIc32shXH4/video.html (great song for this year) Gamma Ray may be the best band most people never heard. Heaven Can Wait is one of the most uplifting metal songs czcams.com/video/3wqgOQYdh1w/video.html. Ralph Scheepers was the original singer. The mastermind was Kai Hansen.
