    Great description and demo. My first fly reel was the perrine with orange trigger extension like the one you showed. Wow that was 42 years ago
    and it still works fine. Thanks for the video.

      Hi Game Hog much welcome and thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing to the channel. I get a lot of questions about these things online here and in person so I thought Id put together something that takes a little mystery out of them. I would not be surprised if someone adds in the future another method of using em they are so neat!

    I took up fly fishing 10 years ago (so basically still a greenhorn!). I bought an expensive graphite rod and expensive reel. I got the chance to try some vintage stuff a couple of years ago. I now use a bamboo rod from the 1920's, an old auto reel (Higgins from 1955?), silk line, and of course an old wicker kreel. I enjoy the art/sport much more now!

    in the mid to late 70's 2 out of 3 fishermen used them. I have an Olimpic, the beautiful matalic brown. Bought at Sears, if Im not mistaking.

      Hi Alan! Always a pleasure hearing from you I do need to check your page out see what adventures you been on and what you have shared always takes me away on a cold winter day. Olympic made some good stuff, like you mention all the manufacturers minus a few had a good stake in em at one time. I dont know why or what happened to the popularity of the reel? Perhaps they were made too well and never broke down so once you had one you have it for life and low profit margins?

    I learned fly fishing back in the 70's with these things. A blue martin to be exact. I have about 2 dozen of these reels I have collected over the decades. Just for nostalgia I guess. some I found at yard sales, and some were given to me by people that just hated them. Several of the Martins are still in the box, never used. I too have an Ocean City in excellent shape. Use it as an automatic or reel it in. I use one every now and then when going out.

      @FishYourWay  Před 2 lety +1

      That sounds like a fine collection you have there. I have noticed the same some people just dont care for them and part with the automatic easily. The martin and oc are my favorite hit about anything between the two. Thanks much for watching and commenting

    Most people have the Perrine aluminum fly boxes left over from the old days lol let alone the reels! You never fail to bust out some gorgeous older gear! Those are beautiful. Love the colors too.... Soo cool. People go nuts for classic cars.... I love classic everything.

    As always I learned something. Thanks Jerry. Perrine used to advertise a lot when I was young in Sports Afield, Field & Stream etc. I could never afford one back then! All this fly fishing talk has me tempted to use my fly rods this season. I tried last year but found it sooooooo hard with the kayak to maneuver and cast and to stay in one spot without constantly drifting one way or the other. Fishing from shore they are a joy - I tend to use my 4 wt more than any other - no saltwater here. suppose practice makes perfect on the kayak! Be safe Jerry. Ron

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Ron thanks for sharing that. I was actually thinking how it would be difficult to store as well on a kayak. Seems that one of the key points to kayak fishing is multiple rods and 4 fly rods for quick fly changes and presentations seems like a task!!! The automatic fly reel is truly a marvel with a place on the water I enjoy mine. The big one for the salt on the pier and sometimes high walls and the other ones fw on the banks. like to make thse so somethings there when someone asks in the future hey how do those things work I can say check this video out and save the words for fun!

    My dad got a nice rod, an automatic fly reel when he retired in the mid 70's. The reel was gold colored, we fly fished for bream on small creeks, an rivers in Arkansas alot. The old rod is missing the reel now, I wish I knew what kind it was so I could get one to replace it. The setup was a really nice.

      Thats a sweet story Willie thanks for sharing. You can most certainly check ebay. The gold one was a perrine you may see something like the one you had as well on there. Used the dont cost to much please check it out!

    I bought a Pflueger automatic many years ago. I think I used it once. The reel is too heavy and makes it difficult to cast well for any extended period. The automatic take up is a novelty. Interesting conversation piece.

    Recently picked up a vintage Kalamazoo Miracle reel to try out an auto reel. The release button was a bit clunky. I went to open it up and the spring came flying back. Tried for 4 hours to get it spooled back and tried every trick to no avail.
    Moral of the story: don’t go unscrewing things unless you know what’s behind it!

    Hi Jerry, The automatic fly reel looks like an easy way to reel in the line and keep you from getting tangled line. I wonder why they aren't more popular. Have fun out there, Mickey

    I recently picked up a new old stock Martin 49 and am looking for some input on the rod I should attach it to. Anyone have advice? I wouldn’t mind sticking with a classic rod to match the age of the reel but maybe not.

    • @FishYourWay

      Hard to say pend what you fish for. I like a 6wt it is good and weighs nice they have some weight so a weighted rod may be beter try a few have and go from there

      Oh cool! You should be able to screw the wop off may have a lever or lock. The spool should come out and top off so youll see the gears. the plate under the top should come off as well which holds the spring but you should be able to leave that as is they are quite simple

      Hi William I have not used any of the newer ones. I seen some in your blog and thought if anyone can add it will be you. Do you find any difference between the new ones and older? The OC 90 is so smooth really a tight reel with true planetary gears and can also be used manual. I see pflueger still makes them as well but its a specialized market in general I suppose. Always wonder what else can be done with em or other ways to fish with em.
