Hey, we were all where you are at one point. What's important is that make videos like THIS ONE and the Poor Unfortunate Souls review. You speak intelligently and make excellent salient points. (and I've been married to a music teacher for 20 years). Your production will improve as you do more and more, but it's certainly not by any means "bad". Keep at it!
You did great honestly, you went so far as to break down the lyrics, edited the text and added the necessary highlights, that’s no small feat for only a few hours! People will always have their own opinions, and honestly, we’re all kind of spoiled by higher-end CZcams video essays… Lindsay Ellis, YMS/Your Movie Sucks, and Movie Bob just to name a few. They are INSANELY well-researched, super long and super in-depth analysis, they spend so much time covering all their bases and double-checking their opinions just to avoid getting nit-picked… I don’t think you should feel discouraged from speaking your mind real quick, or blurting some occasional unfiltered opinions. Not every joke needs to be a banger, and not every reference needs to have 50 cited sources. Whiny commenters are guilty of mistakes too, but they didn’t put in the work hours that you did! …On the other hand, just be warned that there ARE some majorly pedantic commenters out there, on a mission to set the records straight. It can make one feel so uncomfortable about minor missteps… Doesn’t hurt to double-check your work if you’ve got the extra time. Keep it up yo! I look forward to checking out future vids
I am so glad you've made such well stated and valid video essays about how trash this movie is. I also am sick and tired of Lin Manuel miranda, but I think it's worth saying that the name is pronounced "manwell" and not "manual". I love your takes and want to hear more!
I'm 90 percent sure Disney has Lin locked in a basement somewhere forcing him to write hit songs and the Scuttlebutt is him humiliating Disney so they'll let him out.
honestly me too. Just they guy who wrote In The Heights and Hamilton... this song? I think they had him in a contract and he was good with Encanto and Moana because they were both supposed to be stories of under represented cultures and that's in line with Lins Brand. But then they were like 'hey, you want to do live action remakes' and he was like 'not really.' and they were like "it wasn't a question" and he wrote this.
I audibly groaned in the theater during this song. While my friend was jumping in her seat and laughing, I actually said out loud "I want to jump off a building."
You wanna know a good thing about this song? If you ever think you are a bad singer, remember scuttlebutt exists and you can never stoop lower than scuttle’s screeching
It's crazy because Lin Manuel CAN write good lyrics, especially for musicals. Not just the obvious In The Heights and Hamilton, but Moana and Encanto for disney movies. He can write rap into his songs and they can still be phenomenal. The big mistake was 1. Adding a rap to THE LITTLE MERMAID, and 2. Having Awkwafina rap the song, and 3. Having Awkwafina rap the song in THE LITTLE MERMAID
@@WobblesandBean Hamilton was insanely popular because of LMM and his writing. Watch any music theory video talking about the lyrics and composition of Hamilton songs. This video is good; the scuttlebutt is trash and it's not the artists, but the directors and exec's fault. Lin Manuel is a good writer, just not here.
@@animeFAN1743Hamilton was insanely popular because LMM took nearly a decade working on this passion project, rather than churning out music for already-slated movies every two years. I dislike LMM as a person and figure, but you’re absolutely right that he can make actually good pieces-but I don’t think that’s what we’ve been getting, because instead of working on a 2.5 hour sung-through musical that has all of that time to dedicate to developing motifs and patterns and themes, he’s writing one-off raps for The Little Mermaid, where there is nothing really at stake to motivate it being good at all or even trying, and it’s really saddening to watch.
@@bronwyn4553 I'm fully aware that some of his music for disney is not the best; I hate the additions to TLM but also Mary Poppins Returns, I hated the music from that. But Lins music in Moana and especially Encanto were phenomenal. Ik the creator of the video said she didnt like Surface Pressure but it's such a good song, and nobody can deny how awesome We Dont Talk About Bruno was. It's fine to have your opinion on him, I like his work. Similar to Tim Burton, I think hes doing what disney wants in order to up his budget for bigger projects. He worked on Moana and MPR basically to fund and stream Hamilton on Disney+, I wouldn't be surprised if the more and more garbage disney releases, we'll see another Hamilton like epic from him.
@@animeFAN1743no Hamilton was insanely popular because the entire cast were POCs and there was rapping in it. It was “fresh”. Some of those songs are still shit. He needs to stop casting himself as the main character too because the the rambly rhymes coming out of his mouth are horrific.
Personally, I blame corporate more than composer (Alan Menken) and lyricist (Lin) for scuttlebutt. That sounded like a disney producer saying they wanted more songs for the kids because the plot was getting too serious children and they still want to primarily market to them. They probably tried to salvage as much as they could from that disaster.
@@alikarol3 Sadly, that's Disney for you. They made masterpieces and wanted to recapture that for live action. It's a slippery slope because people don't want the originals to change, but on the other hand no one wants to watch an exact replica of their favorite movies (it would be boring and you could just watch the original - AKA they should just stop live actions). In my opinion they should of stopped at Maleficent. I think the original isn't bad, but it's hard to follow and gets a bit slow. The Female Lead wasn't really inspirational (for young girls) so they picked everyone's favorite villain to be the main lead. The original had maybe 1-2 songs so it wouldn't be a big deal if they didn't use them. You can see so much creativity go into that movie(like fairies, Maleficent's magic, Aurora's father, etc.), but it has gone downhill ever since.
I think the other producer just thought “do the Hamilton thing!” and Lin just went along with it, cause Lin isn’t that tone deaf, he has had song in products that were inconsistent to the rest of it, but they were conscious choices made as to give the characters they portrayed more personality Shiny, you’ll be back and the like. The songs in Hamilton were thought out though, this song was probably released with the 2nd draft of the song
@billiexlove4906 I understand that. I meant more creating this type of song to "keep children engaged." Children don't need THIS type of song to be engaged. All the years of Disney classics we still sing today prove that. I'm all for new songs, but they should match the tone of the rest included and of the film.
@@caitlyncarvalho7637 I was talking about wish. Wish downfall was that Lin-Manuel Miranda wasn’t on it. Also scuttle but isn’t a bad song it’s just really annoying, unique song writer combined with a unique voice doesn’t work for a lot of people.
It grosses me out the Crab was in Ariels hair. Like , I picture her smelling fishy. It's hyper realistic so it has a different feel in this movie. I know in the cartoon Sabastion was in her hair but he could emote felt more like a puppy then a real slimy hyper realistic crab.
Dude, I too prefer the original cartoon Sabastion over the emotionless hyper-real one. Much as I prefer everything else from the 1989 cartoon original than this new one.
Thankfully, I'm not from an English-speaking country, so I didn't have to listen to Awkwafina's horrible voice. However, the dub actress had to try and sound faithful to Awkwafina's version (sadly), so I still suffered throughout the whole song. Hell, when it started my friend and I looked at each other and whispered "not this song please" And none of the kids in the theatre laughed. Not one bit. I hate it when people treat kids like idiots with a shitty sense of humor, most kids I know prefer jokes that are more intelligent than the ones in scuttlebutt
As Astor said, Le Poisson is devastatingly clever and does not condescend to the audience at all, and I have always thought it was hilarious. It really does strike you watching Disney movies from before this decade how they never used to talk down to the kids.
I'm french and the same thing happened with the french dub...I LOVE the voice actress who voiced Awkwafina (she's the voice actress of Margot Robbie and A LOT of cartoons characters) but she sounded too much like Awkwafina (I don't blame her, that's her job after all) so the final result is sadly as bad as the original english version...
Howard Ashman wasn’t the composer of the Disney classics, that would be Alan Menken, who also composed this song lol. Haters don’t even try to look up random claims they make. This song does suck though lol
I like Lin-Manuel's work, especially in Encanto and Hamilton, but, yeah, this was too much. I cringed throughout the whole thing. Also, it feels out of place since it's in the 1800's- Edit: Okay, Hamilton was in the 1700's, but, it worked at least.
It's not really the time period that makes it feel out of place, but rather that Alan Menken and Lin Manuel Miranda have very different music styles and in a movie that's mostly Alan songs, Lin's just feel awkward and out of place
It's clearly a you problem. You can't blame your children liking a very lively beat of the song. It's for kids to get entertained not for boring crusty seniors.
I like Awkwafina in small doses. She's funny and entertaining but in a very specific way. I liked her in the Jumanji sequel, though that was probably because the director knew what he was doing and that she was cast in a role that didn't make her annoying. She was also in The Dark Crystal series, as a Skeksis that didn't have a huge amount of screen time, but her voice fit the character well I think.
Same here. I thought she was pretty good in Shang-Chi. But with that + Raya + this, I’m just getting sick of her. To her credit, she does convey “annoying ass bird” really well. Same with Gilbert Godfrey when he played Iago in Aladdin. But they had him sing, with that voice, in that weird direct-to-dvd sequel and it was terrible there, too. Disney apparently never learned their lesson.
I honestly didn't mind her too much at the beginning in the Raya (these two are the only ones I've seen with her voice - well, I haven't seen the little mermaid la, but I can hear her, so fair enough. I did find her voice a bit annoying but also interesting. But the character of the dragon was so god damn annoying, that it slowly turned from me not getting over the character, but the voice as well. With me being already not very found of her voice, this movie was a nail to the coffin really. I don't know her from any other movies, perhaps she's amazing and not annoying at all, just her roles were bad, but as these were the only one I can build my opinion on, she does not come out very good.. After this "song", I cannot help but think of it whenever her name or voice come off, and instantly get irritated.
@@ple8379 The issue is that she does really well in these parts! But Raya was an overwhelmingly messy and unfortunate movie, and her character was written - badly, to say the least.
I understand it perfectly, in the old days, freaks we're laughed at and models are admired, but now, Hollywood and media in general wants us to admire the freaks and laugh at the models!
Ariel rolling around and covering her ears with the pillow perfectly mirrors the audience. This song makes me wanna shoot a gannet, baste/marinate it in red wine and eat it, head and all, served with sides of whole fish head soup, tempura shrimp and crab dumplings.
Lin-Manuel's central problem is that he doesn't seem able to "say no" to each and every project Disney decides to shoe horn him into. He IS talented, and I don't even dislike him (for emphasis three Halloweens ago I was Lin-Manuel Usnavi and rapped the opening to In The Heights, which was actually the first cast album I ever owned), but its becoming more apparent he's not all that judicious and is starting to buy into the hype that he's "the new Ashman" even as Howard himself had a pretty good sense of what he was and wasn't able to do (he was brought on to Disney by Eisner and specifically sought out animation which at the time would have come out of nowhere and would have been perceived as slumming. It would have been much more logical for him to pursue success in the live action musical genre, maybe working with Bette MIdler or somebody on a movie musical as a Little Shop followup, rather than in a genre that at the time was most associated with Roger Rabbit). And in so failing to do so we get Scuttlebutt
I’ve seen a couple people talk about this, and it seems like he’s just really grateful for all the opportunities he gets and can’t say no. Apparently he’s also said that he’s pretty burnt out after all the projects he’s been in and needs a break. He’s talented, but man needs to just take a break.
@@lumenx7499 I'll be really interested to see how his next show The Warriors will turn out. Considering that Hollywood is at a complete standstill at the moment maybe this will be the good opening for him to return to the stage and do his thing
In defense of the line: “From the women who wash all the clothes To the hunter that arrows the bow” The point is that literally EVERYONE is talking about the proposal, including the guy who has nothing to do with anything.
@@gypsylee333 to arrow: move or appear to move swiftly and directly, e.g. "lights arrowed down into the airport" (thanks Google). Though the line makes even less sense with that knowledge ig
My main problem with this song is that as someone who processes things slower than many people, this song that is a key crucial part in carrying the plot, being a fast paced rap can very easily fly over the head for me (especially because as you mentioned Awkwafinas voice can be very grading). Which only makes me wonder if people harder of hearing than me even understand what was happening in this scene and instead just watched the film skip like it was a scratched 2000s dvd. I also pitched to my friends a similar point you made that the ONLY reason this song was put in was to get Daveed Diggs and Awkwafina rapping.
Agreed! What's the point of having clever lyrics (not that this song does) if it's going too fast for anyone to understand? I like Hamilton, but I understood nothing until after I had spent hours replaying the soundtrack on Spotify.
Can confirm: my gf is deaf and just couldn’t figure out what was going on so I just leaned over and told her “Scuttle is rapping badly about hearing that Eric is proposing to someone” which saved like 3 minutes of exposition
@@FungiGamerthey just need to leave Disney alone... The original is already good, why make a remake? Next they are gonna make a live action Hannah Montana? Miley Cyrus played Hannah Montana but knowing Disney, they just might make a live action out of an already live action show and movie...
I think a lot of the problem is the people at Disney now don't understand why Howard Ashman made the Little Mermaid a musical. The basic premise of a musical is this: If there's too much emotion to be relayed just by talking, sing. If there's too much emotion to be relayed by just singing, dance. This is why so many of those song stick with us. Not simply because they're well written, perfectly sung (and Howard was a notorious perfectionist who drove his singers hard), lyrically brilliant songs but because they relay emotion beyond what is just said. That's why I, as a 37 year old man who doesn't care for musicals and isn't really all that hung up on the original Little Mermaid (there are better Disney movies), still remember the first time I saw "Part of Your World" and can still sing parts of it from memory. Linn Manuel Miranda has honestly always struck me as passe. The problem is that he's "the musical guy" of our time, but again, that doesn't mean he understands what Ashman was doing with the original, or even that he is a fan of the original. Honestly the rap song by Akwafina, written by Lin Manuel Miranda, sounds like something a focus group came up with. Hmm, what do the kids like these days? Survey says Hamilton, Akwafina and rap music. Well how do we combine those things?
@@Kureemy Thank you for your kind words. Yes, I am a fan of Sideways, and I recommend his channel to anyone who wants to better understand how music influences a movie or TV show. Miranda's not terrible, but he is limited. That's my biggest concern with him.
The one that I don't understand, they go over the top with Poor Unfortunate Soul, added extra instruments like the violins, to make it more like an orchestra, i guess, but decided to go with rap with this song, like what? :"D
@@Noblesse_Sapphire Again, the more I think about it the more I think they're making movies via focus group. That, or they're already using the AI software to write scripts.
LMM was a big fan of the original film and even went to school with Alan Menken's niece for years. All the new songs from these remake sounds off because they're just attached to a pre-existing piece that's well-known. A lot of people LMM as that "Rap guy" and while he does incorporate a lot of patter, he's shown musical diversity in things like Hamilton alone. His entire claim the same was bringing more modern music into Broadway this is why a lot of music ends up popular because it shreds the line between sounding like a mainstream song while still clearly being showtune adjacent.
I feel so bad for your mother she gave birth to someone who calls other people bad and then starts acting like they are better then then and can’t just say it’s their opinion instead of bringing down the actress

I’m not acting high and mighty I have disliked things but I don’t go on a website then start commenting some things that could make them feel bad I keep it to myself you should try that
I haven’t even listened to the whole song but this is the first time for a Disney movie where I got a headache from listening to a song in less than 10 seconds.
To be fair to Mr. Miranda, if I was told to make a song for Scuttle (a character who in the original had a running joke of having a horrible singing voice and will be voiced by someone who can’t sing) in a scene that is a horrible place for a song, I’d just quit on the spot.
Honestly, this doesn’t feel like Menken or Miranda. This feels like Mouse Corporation. I refuse to believe that any of these brilliant composers, who know musical language, wrote this travesty.
LMM is a legend. It's perfectly okay to still be his fan AND admit that this song is a stinker. It's really bad. Like, *really* bad, but it doesn't discredit the rest of his work.
Lin Manuel Miranda also wrote all the songs for the movie Vivo between that and his other works, my impression is that he really struggles to write intelligent or unique songs on “short: timeframes, though “short” meaning whatever the standard production period is right now. In Vivo the songs are catchy enough but all of them fall into one of 2 categories: Expressing a singular emotion in a repetitive pop song format or literally describing what is happening on-screen/in the story to a slightly more dynamic but still repetitive pop song format. In Hamilton the musical one of THE BEST songs is “My Shot” and that took him SIX YEARS to write! I think his two musicals are just so much more consistently good because he had enough time to actually write them
I had a bad headache when I saw this movie (bought the tickets ahead of time and couldn’t get a refund). When Scuttlebutt came on, it felt like Awkwafina herself entered the theater and physically started shaking me and hitting me in the head lmao
I swear, listening to Scuttlebutt, I literally feel like Ren & Stimpy where a yak character literally screams, “SHUT UP!!!! I CAN’T STAND IT ANYMORE!!!! ALL THE TIME!!!! SINGING!!!! SINGING!!!! WHY WON’T IT STOP?!?!?!?!?!” And then went insane.
god. thank you for speaking out against this atrocity. I am still trying to process it myself. a couple notes: Scuttle actually has, believe it or not, *2* whole songs in the broadway adaptation! they used to be my least favourites, and I used to skip them-- but they actually sort of... grew on me, and now they're like. some *of* my favourites?? they're silly, but they're genuinely fun and pleasing to listen to, and the whacky voice isn't honestly all that grating. they've got some clever word play, great dance moves, and a unique sound - really catchy stuff overall! plus, the second one is a really heartfelt "you got this, girl!" number to uplift Ariel and encourage her to keep chasing her dreams, even with so many challenges stacked against her. I honestly really like it. it's cute and genuine. Scuttlebutt... feels like the lyrics and whatever semblance of an instrumental track it has don't even want to *be* together. it has that typical Calypso backing we associate with Sebastian, but overlaid with rap (notably a Lin rap) feels very... unnatural? the rhythms are NOT coming together and there are numerous moments where there are just, agonizingly long gaps between lyrics, or everything is way too fast to make any kind of sense of, which is... weird for an exposition song. it's excessively literal. I cannot believe these lyrics are supposed to be interpreted as snarky, smart, creative and playful, which... feels very much like the energy they're trying to sell this with. it BEWILDERS me that a behind-the-scenes tape quotes Alan Menken and Lin MM as being excited about the "magic" this new track suppsedly brings to the movie. and, honestly? writers with as much history/training/experience in writing for musicals should KNOW this stuff by now - that in a musical, a lyrical song should only exist to: a) advance the plot, or b) develop character. the audience is already stretching their disbelief as much as it already is: make it worth their time. give them substance, give them emotion, give them meaning. or: give them a well-written and entertaining comedy song that enhances their love for the characters on screen/stage! just... pick one!!! finally, I feel like... conceptually something like this could've worked, just in a MUCH different medium. stage musicals give you the benefit of flashy outfits and campy dance routines which can really help you lean into the silliness of something. heck - there are even parts of *this* song that I could imagine working a lot better in 2D animation, if the characters were allowed to have exaggerated movements and facial expressions, or... if the camera was allowed to do literally anything other than float aimlessly around every scene. (seriously. why is that so prevelant in this movie?? some snappy back-and-forth movements with closeups on character expressions would've done wonders here.) nothing kills me more than seeing Sebastian's soulless little hyperrealistic 3D model render *crab rapping,* though. just........ god. why. I'd be curious if you had any thoughts on what they did with Under The Sea, because... god I have so many.
Under the sea made no sense to me. Not having sea creatures playing instruments meant they dodged creating more potentially creepy looking characters (or was it a budget thing?) but I’d rather that than a nondescript turtle shuffling along a floor with nothing to do with the lyric. Instead we got an extended dance break… why? They made such a big deal about having a dance troupe perform for them for reference. It just ruined the flow of the song. (So the extended scene can’t mean it had budget restrictions?) Overall it just makes me think Rob Marshall (is he the same one who directed Brandy’s Cinderella?) should not have taken a ‘make it look national geographic realistic’ angle… it’s a fairytale with mermaids… the ‘newt plays the flute’ and the ‘black fish she sing’ are sorely missed!
I have to think (hope?) that those quotes were taken out of context, and/or referenced another version of the song that was scrapped. Because, goodness. Most likely, though, they were just given tons of money and told to play it up. I cannot imagine, with how talented they both are, that either Alan or Lin seriously thought that the Scuttlebutt as it appears in the final version of the film was a welcome addition.
The revenge because Scuttle wasn't allowed to sing in the original movie! Even Ariel keeps the pillow around her ears. Later tossing the blanked on Scuttle. Nobody could stand this. This is pure fun. because its brutally bad (;
What are you talking about, Encanto is very capturing, the songs eat themselves into your brain, they flow, they are full of emotions and well delivered. Not everything a person creates must be the same. The Scuttlebutt can still be awful.
Yes, I don’t understand why there are people who don’t like the songs in Encanto. The ensemble singing is very interesting to listen to. Surface Pressure feels a bit out of place in terms of style but it is still a fun song, plus the lyrics and message are heartfelt.
I like Lin Manuel Miranda's work in a lot of places, but it does have a time in a place. Howard Ashman is very dear to me, as is his work, and although I love Hamilton, Miranda was just not the person to write new songs for the little mermaid. Ashman had a strong vision for how everything was supposed to sound and feel to push the stiry along while making songs memorable and catchy. Sadly, I find this song to do neither. This is nothing against Lin, Awkwafina, and definitely not against Daveed, and I wouldn't say this is Disney's worst, but this song just doesn't fit the little mermaid or its narrative. Howard Ashman deserved his legacy to be shown fully through this movie, and it just.. wasn't.
My hope isn't lost on Wish. What I do find interesting is that they hired two pop music writers/producers for the music as opposed to Broadway people. I guess they're leaning in hard to the pop angle, but the song in the trailer sounds Broadway. So I'm not sure what to expect.
I also wanted to ask what is wrong with the song "guy like you"? I've never seen Hunchback but I just listened to the song and it wasn't bad??? Idk maybe I'm dumb lol
@@tired247guy like you is fun and easy to listen, it fits with the gargoyles' comedic personality, and they're actually funny unlike awkwafina's scuttle
Arguably I think the scuttlebutt fits more than the other original songs they put in, because theyre talking to eachother while singing instead of narrating to the audience. The scuttlebutt, while goofy and awkward, fit in better than say Ariel singing in her head during the ride to the castle

If we're being honest, the repetition there had a purpose. It was to emphasize Moana's boredom with staying on the island. Every day felt the same to her.
Like a lot of pelple said, I would not critize Lin that harshly, this was probably Disney pushing impossible deadlines and/or "juvenile content" to "attract the kids"
They removed Les Poissons for this. There are people who worked on this atrocity that thought THIS was fixing the movie. From what exactly? I do not know.
I personally must say I disagree with your take on Surface Pressure. I actually enjoyed that song too much because it relates to much to me, but I think that’s more in terms of the lyrics and less in terms of the execution. I value your insight and I can see why it’s on that great in the movie sense, for story telling. Anyway, just wanted to express my thoughts as well. And I agree with everything else so far. Haha you make amazing content! :)
I am living for for the absolute outrage in astors voice when she talks about how they got rid of the cooking of the crab song for scuttlebutt. ITS SO FUNNY
I am in love with your takes. You HAVE to do Part of Your World and Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl, because I think they all have lots of valid reasons to be critiqued compared to the original and I think Howard deserves the world to hear why these songs are subpar compared to the original.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this. Halle Bailey is a good singer but it felt like there was no direction and part of your world just ended up feeling somewhat sloppy. Howard Ashman wanted part of your world to be perfection to the point they almost got the film delayed because he was working so hard on it with Jodi Benson, instead we got a version that felt like a first take.

Who in Disney decided that children would want their ears to bleed from *this*? Blessings to Awkwafina and Lin. May the two of them escape Disney’s basements.
I actually really liked surface pressure. It really resonated with me as the eldest sibling and how that worked with my family. I thought it was communicated super well, and it was one of the few things in the movie I really enjoyed.
I really hate it how Disney wedges these new songs into their prexisting musicals/these added songs. The main problem is that these songs are from completely different periods of musicals/clearly different composers with different styles so they don’t jell or fit in the slightest and come off like pop songs rather than musical numbers made specifically for the film and their style Additionally I agree with your feelings on Lin Manuel, while I enjoy some of his songs they do feel more like just songs rather then musical numbers, like I king the song under the surface but it just sorta starts and has no real build up like musical numbers should
I like how in the scene it looks like Ariel doesn’t want to listen to that shit. When I first heard about the song being put into the remake, I was like, “Why?”, and then I heard it on your video. I knew it would be a horrible song.
I unfortunately watched this in theaters, and I got up to take a bathroom break and came back to the VERY end of this song. The universe decided to bless me. Thank you, universe.
“Don’t worry. Not all is lost. The next Disney movie, Wish, has no Maranda on it.” Man I wish it did tho. That villain song makes this look like a masterpiece
Lin-Manuel very can much can make great music. Look at Hamilton and In The Heights, they did not become staples in contemporary musical theatre for no reason. So not sure what happened
This is the fundamental flaw with all the live action remakes, all the songs were tailor made for the movie, the singing performance (emphasis on performance), you didn't even need to be a good singer, Jeremy Irons and Rowan Atkins literally talked their lines in the songs they were involved in and everything else made up for it, and when they try to make original songs oh boy you can tell a vast difference between a song brought in from the stage play and... Scuttlebutt.
In defense of the song "Savages", it was meant to make you, the audience, feel uncomfortable - because racism is an uncomfortable topic for everyone. In my opinion, "Savages" captures the terrible sentiments of racism perfectly - from both sides of the same human coin - with equal awfulness, showing no partiality between the European settlers nor the Native Americans - which is what racism is. Anyone of any skin tone/color can be racist - this is what Disney has shown through that song. The raw, abrasive harshness of the lyrics in "Savages" is meant to capture the gross nature of racism. It's a villain song that both sides partake in. You have both sides fuelling hatred for the other - dehumanizing one another all while preparing to war between each other. I say, if "Savages" makes you uncomfortable, that's good! That means you have a functioning moral compass & can recognize that racism is disgusting, no matter who it is of whatever skin color is doing it.
Savages is an underrated villain song tbh. It just evokes such a powerful and tense feeling in the music - and the lyrics perfectly convey what they're supposed to. Two sides opposing one another who have dehumanizing the other - while Pocahontas flies to make one final gesture of peace. Even the word "Savages" itself is used brilliantly. Obviously you have the Englishmen referring to the "primitive" Natives as "Savages," something the English settlers actually did, evoking primitive or uncultured people. But the verse sung by the Natives, the Chieftan especially, conveys a similarly dehumanizing tone, but uses "Savages" to refer to them more as morally devoid or animalistic in their greed. The Chieftain isn't acting out of hatred, he's acting out of protection for his people who he sees as under attack - but that sentiment obviously twists into hatred of the Englishmen in the eyes of the younger Native warriors. The Chieftan sounds regretful and disappointed when he sings "The only thing they feel at all is greed. Beneath that milky hide, there's emptiness inside," But the warriors sound angry and spiteful when they finish "I wonder if they even bleed." The Natives were the ones being invaded, but by the point of the song occurring, they had let their rightful fear and rage turn them to acting with the same generalized hatred as the English captain had for them.
My composer friend and I took a grand total of 5 minutes to come up with a better set-up for this song if they really had to have one here that would still fit in with the sound of the original soundtrack. Have Scuttle fly over the land and hear the sailors, village folk, and palace servants give us the exposition inn ensemble song a la "A Rumor in St Petersburg" or "Belle," passing off the rumors to each other. Have Scuttle overhear all of it, then only deliver the final big line while bursting into Ariel's room and waking her up. Took less than 5 minutes to come up with.
This reminds me of how in the late 90’s early 2000’s movie makers used to shove unnecessary poorly written rap songs into everything because they thought it was the cool thing for kids these days. It was a terrible trend then and I really don’t want that to return. Or at least hire someone who understands how to write a good rap. I mean there was a bit of rapping in Moana so I think Lin could write a rap, but that’s definitely not what we got here. And tonally not sure a tap really works anyway in this musical.

They are INSANELY well-researched, super long and super in-depth analysis, they spend so much time covering all their bases and double-checking their opinions just to avoid getting nit-picked…
I don’t think you should feel discouraged from speaking your mind real quick, or blurting some occasional unfiltered opinions.

Yeah, no. She's right, LMM is overrated. His forced rhymes aren't good.
@@WobblesandBean Hamilton was insanely popular because of LMM and his writing. Watch any music theory video talking about the lyrics and composition of Hamilton songs.
But why? The original had nothing like this and has been loved by children for over 30 years..

Thankfully, I'm not from an English-speaking country, so I didn't have to listen to Awkwafina's horrible voice. And none of the kids in the theatre laughed. Not one bit. I hate it when people treat kids like idiots with a shitty sense of humor, most kids I know prefer jokes that are more intelligent than the ones in scuttlebutt

She was actually fantastic in "The Farewell," where she was the lead.

I share your main problem and disliked the introduction to everyone in Encanto for the same reason.

I think his two musicals are just so much more consistently good because he had enough time to actually write them

god. thank you for speaking out against this atrocity. I am still trying to process it myself. a couple notes:
Scuttle actually has, believe it or not, *2* whole songs in the broadway adaptation! they used to be my least favourites, and I used to skip them-- but they actually sort of... grew on me, and now they're like. some *of* my favourites?? they're silly, but they're genuinely fun and pleasing to listen to, and the whacky voice isn't honestly all that grating. they've got some clever word play, great dance moves, and a unique sound - really catchy stuff overall! plus, the second one is a really heartfelt "you got this, girl!" number to uplift Ariel and encourage her to keep chasing her dreams, even with so many challenges stacked against her.
(seriously. why is that so prevelant in this movie?? some snappy back-and-forth movements with closeups on character expressions would've done wonders here.)
nothing kills me more than seeing Sebastian's soulless little hyperrealistic 3D model render *crab rapping,* though. just........ god.
Im probably the only person in this comment section that actually loves this song wtf

The revenge because Scuttle wasn't allowed to sing in the original movie! Even Ariel keeps the pillow around her ears. Later tossing the blanked on Scuttle. Nobody could stand this. This is pure fun. because its brutally bad (;
Lol 😂 interesting observation
It didn’t bother me. I actually laughed.😄
Nah, even the original Ariel finds Scuttle song irritating. 😂
What are you talking about, Encanto is very capturing, the songs eat themselves into your brain, they flow, they are full of emotions and well delivered. Not everything a person creates must be the same. The Scuttlebutt can still be awful.
@@GlitchiboIt’s one of my favorites actually
Howard Ashman deserved his legacy to be shown fully through this movie, and it just.. wasn't.
Surface Pressure is the best song in Echanto. As a person with anxiety, I genuinely connected with the performance.
I have no hope for Wish. Disney has lost the ability to tell great stories and push technology. They are pro failures.
My hope isn't lost on Wish. What I do find interesting is that they hired two pop music writers/producers for the music as opposed to Broadway people. I guess they're leaning in hard to the pop angle, but the song in the trailer sounds Broadway. So I'm not sure what to expect.
@@Glitchiboit looks like the beta version of Encanto.

I also wanted to ask what is wrong with the song "guy like you"? I've never seen Hunchback but I just listened to the song and it wasn't bad??? Idk maybe I'm dumb lol

Plot twist: Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote it to be bad on purpose
He probably was forced into this.
This video was playing as I was cooking, and my 5 year old said eww what is that as soon as the bird started singing 😭😭😭
"not all is lost! the next movie, Wish, doesn't have Lin Manuel, so it could have a good soundtrack!"
that aged well :.)
Arguably I think the scuttlebutt fits more than the other original songs they put in, because theyre talking to eachother while singing instead of narrating to the audience. The scuttlebutt, while goofy and awkward, fit in better than say Ariel singing in her head during the ride to the castle
Are you serious
Scuttlebutt doesn’t fit into the story at all
@@stargirIll the story? No not at all. but the vibe is the same. Like it is out of place but I like it more than the others because the characters are having a conversation rather than singing at the audience
@@ShyFly221 but if it takes people out of the story entirely and adds nothing good to the movie…it’s not a good song

I remember in Moana where he didn't know how to rhyme "island", so he just rhymed it with "island" 😅
If we're being honest, the repetition there had a purpose. It was to emphasize Moana's boredom with staying on the island. Every day felt the same to her.
7:10 uhm,, I think I miss Lin Manuel Miranda after hearing the thanks songs .
7:12 Oh my gosh, you poor soul…
Saying that is the same as using God's name in vain
I personally must say I disagree with your take on Surface Pressure. I actually enjoyed that song too much because it relates to much to me, but I think that’s more in terms of the lyrics and less in terms of the execution.
I value your insight and I can see why it’s on that great in the movie sense, for story telling.
Anyway, just wanted to express my thoughts as well. And I agree with everything else so far. Haha you make amazing content! :)
if they wanted to give Scuttle a song, they should've just taken "Human Stuff" or "Positoovity" from the broadway musical
Howard Ashman is the king! R.I.P
Lin Manuel has lived long enough to see himself become a villain
You having hope for Wish’s soundtrack has definitely.. aged 😭
I am living for for the absolute outrage in astors voice when she talks about how they got rid of the cooking of the crab song for scuttlebutt. ITS SO FUNNY
this is the thanks i get: hold my beer
To quote Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm, ‘They were so preoccupied with whether or not they could they never stopped to think if they should.’
@@sallyprice8772i personally loved halle’s rendition, are there any specific reasons you think it sounds like a first take? genuine question

@@xxxmaysilssss690Maybe not but I thought she still did great. It’s also not completely void of emotion. I also personally enjoy the different directions she takes the songs with her voice
@@midosworld I felt there was a lot of phrasing issues e.g. where she held the note rather than made it staccato and, maybe this is me being picky, it felt as if she was trying to sound more musical theatre esc but at the same try to sound more like a pop artist. I don't blame Halle for this more the producers and composers. I don't want to go too much into detail here (I could talk all night about what I'd change to the composition choices in this version of the film lmao) but I'm genuinely glad disney chose someone who can actually sing and not overload the autotune
"We're safe, 'Wish' has no Lin Manuel Miranda" oh the blissfull lack of knowledge we all had back then
If they'd done a literal re-creation of "Les Poissons" from the original film in live action, it would have been a gore-fest of a kitchen scene; a _Texas Chainsaw Massacre_ for the kiddies. Even the animated sequence was gag-inducing at times.
_(Looks around apprehensively, whispers)_ ....Maybe in ten years they'll own up to actually having filmed it and they'll release it as a special feature on whatever home video format we're using _then._ Sigh....a girl can dream.
Its almost as if Disney shouldn't be remaking these films in the first place.
Disney also made Into the Woods (2014) that had Rapunzel's prince being blind due to thorns, one stepsister having her big toe cut off while the other one has her heel cut off, the birds peck their eyes out.
The Lone Ranger (2013) A character eats a man's heart.

"wish dosen't have lin so we'll be safe". If only we'd known...
The main problem is that these songs are from completely different periods of musicals/clearly different composers with different styles so they don’t jell or fit in the slightest and come off like pop songs rather than musical numbers made specifically for the film and their style
Additionally I agree with your feelings on Lin Manuel, while I enjoy some of his songs they do feel more like just songs rather then musical numbers, like I king the song under the surface but it just sorta starts and has no real build up like musical numbers should
oh that- that comment about Wish was... Optimistic
I like how in the scene it looks like Ariel doesn’t want to listen to that shit. When I first heard about the song being put into the remake, I was like, “Why?”, and then I heard it on your video. I knew it would be a horrible song.
Lol
oh thank god someone else cant stand Lin Manuel Miranda anymore. I also cant stand Awkwafina, so i guess this was a critical hit to my cringe organs.
I unfortunately watched this in theaters, and I got up to take a bathroom break and came back to the VERY end of this song. The universe decided to bless me. Thank you, universe.
When you thought you where safe but then wish drops with ONLY shitty songs. We are never safe.
"Guy Like You" was from "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame."
That Wish comment did not hold up
“Don’t worry. Not all is lost. The next Disney movie, Wish, has no Maranda on it.”
Man I wish it did tho. That villain song makes this look like a masterpiece
Wish is worse honestly
Lin Manuel Miranda went from writing Satisfied (my personal vote for his magnum opus) to Scuttlebutt.
Beneath that milky hide, there's emptiness inside,"
But the warriors sound angry and spiteful when they finish "I wonder if they even bleed."
The Natives were the ones being invaded, but by the point of the song occurring, they had let their rightful fear and rage turn them to acting with the same generalized hatred as the English captain had for them.
Howard Ashman and Walt Disney are spinning in their graves.
I wanted to leave the theatre at that scene. And when Ariel throwed a blanket on Scuttle and Sebastian ı was so relieved.
Dude, this is still the number one song in hell. Demons can't get enough of it.
Yeah, Wish... so much for that, then.
