    Technically he isn't a villain yet, this is more along the lines of a descent... So if you think of the lyrics... "This is the thanks I get" for being a good king who was trying to create a haven for his people....he probably wouldn't be all evil to start. This is his becoming a villain song, unlike other typical Disney villains who were bad when they were introduced.

    I definitely didn’t notice as many musical changes, but mostly because of the poor story changes. Why the heck was Ariel singing, and why is Sebastián describing fish playing instruments they aren’t playing?! The entire underwater world feels drained of its magic. Realism is fine, but where was king Trident's KINGDOM?!

  • @Mockingdragon
    @Mockingdragon Před 16 hodinami

    What in the heck was the choreography in this song? Magnifico storms into the room, absolutely furious, and then the emotion vanishes the second the song starts, and he's bopping around and smiling. It was like the absolute opposite of the songwriting adage - You're supposed to sing when your emotion is too strong for mere words. But this song just completely changed the emotion involved. It's like singing cheered him up, and then he wasn't angry again until the end of the song.

    Finally watched this movie and...phew. I really hated this song. In general I found that I liked the music overall but the lyrics were all so terrible that I couldn't enjoy the songs. So much about the lyrics just doesn't mean anything. "When I speak, they tell me 'sit down'" - When did that happen? That...isn't what the scene with Magnifico OR the scene with her family were about. Why is your I Want song telling the audience stuff we've never been Shown? Plot-wise, this was a great example of the lack of worldbuilding and general establishment of the premise. Her wish is for "something better than this". Than...what? What is "this"? A utopia (albeit a false one) that the entire population is supposed to believe in? These people are supposed to believe wholeheartedly that giving up their wishes for safekeeping is good for them, makes them happier, etc. And yet Asha immediately believes that this is Wrong and Evil and Must Be Stopped because....she's the protagonist, I guess. Song-wise, I realized even the first time though how generic this was. Nothing about This Wish couldn't be plopped onto the radio and understood without context. Not that Broadway hasn't had breakaway pop hits, but you tell me anyone understood what One Night In Bangkok was about

    One of the reasons why the songs in Wish is so vague is because they wrote the songs before THE SCRIPT!

    It worth mentioning that the redundancy in "in let you live here for free and i dont even charge you rent" isnt the only problem In hellfire theres the lyric "its not my fault, im not to blame" so redundancy isnt the problem, the problem is how its used, the usage of the word "and" specifically. "And" can be used and work, loke in poor unfortunate souls "Repented, seen the light AND made a switch" But the issue with magnificos lyric is that there is no important poetic meaning in those lines, money and rent arent important in the story abd the melody of the line is quite boring. Theoreticallly "living for free" and "charging rent" COULD be different things but the line and song doesn't do anything to make us come to that conclusion, so we just assume its redundant. I think the word "even" is to blame for this absurd line. Also, this is just my preference, but doesn't the word "rent" feel out of place? It felt so odd the first time i heard it "I let you live here for free" is also an awkward rhythm, but im nitpicking now "I let you live for free, yeah, i dont even charge a cent" feels better, if i heard it my jaw wouldn't drop so that an improvement

    Just watched Wish. Honestly, the static backgrounds paired with the Shrek 1 level animation distracted me more than the songs but they were all pretty painful. This was arguably the best song of the movie (other than maybe the Knowing What I Know Now) but you nailed it on the head about it being so bland. I don’t know how much is to blame on the song vs the movie not establishing enough story to backup the words in the song.

    Honestly, my biggest problem with this rendition is how weird it is genre wise. Okay, so they stripped the guitar, flute, and most of the percussion, which turns the Calypso and Reggae song into what I can only describe as "Caribbean pop", bad enough, but okay. Then they add a _string ensemble_ in the second half, so I guess it's Chamber.. Caribbean.. pop? And _then_ they add the Reggae instruments in the climax, which ends with me being _very_ confused as to what direction they wanted to take. It feels like multiple people wanted to do the same song but in different ways, like one group wanted to stick to Reggae to be accurate to the original, but the other wanted Chamber music so they could convince people this was a reimagining, and then the last one wanted a pop song so they could reach the top of the charts, so we end up with a musically incoherent mess that doesn't know what it wants to be.

  • @samuelhadjaissa5201

    I want to say that I like your video and that you made a great point about the issues with "This is the thanks I get" . However I feel like you kind of miss the point of Magnifico, the whole deal isn't that he isn't granting everyone's wishes. Rather that is is holding on to people's ambitions, their desires and dreams, because Asha made the point that if he isn't going to grant peoples wishes he should just simply give them back so that they can achieve these wishes for themselves. And this in turn takes away their will to dream. And while Magnifico seems to have good intentions he is still doing this out of pride, he only trust himself and believes that only "he" is capable of making good choices and that only he knows best. Even the song show's off how arrogant he is. And while you make a great point about the follow, the lyrics and tone its still a song about arrogant man who see himself as the hero of his own story.

    Just have her completely misspell her name past the "A" and pause like she doesn't know if it's right, and Ursula be like, "Good enough," and wrap up the scroll like she doesn't give a shit. It's binding enough, she signed it. She still doesn't know how to spell, she's so desperate she isn't thinking ahead, and Ursula is shown to be rushing her into a bad choice, again. Or, you know, tell Buzzfeed to get a better imagination so they can imagine a world where someone only knows how to spell their name and nothing else, a thing that I'm sure happens.

    another thing that bugs me in the live action remake version of the song is the severe lack of facial expression from Ursula. I feel like in the animated movie, her facial expressions played such a big role in her appearing as this manipulator who tries to make ariel trust her, but really is just after her own interests, while also making her way more fun and sassy. In the remake, i dont think i've seen her smile even once (in the song i haven't watched the remake) which in my opinion makes it all the less believable that ariel would trust her, because she looks antagonistic all the time, and don't even get me started in the frustrating difference between her calm expression and the (over)powerful singing voice

    The sad thing is you can see what they're TRYING to do, but it's just super clunky and doesn't fit what the movie is going for in the first place. They can write better songs, but it just shows what the live action remakes were trying to do: be a cash grab, "renew" their movies, and don't emphasize quality

    I think that even "Watch Me Work" from Trolls Band Together was a better villain song that this one. It wasn't as upbeat, the lyrics nicely represented the personalities of Velvet and Veneer and how they are obsessed with fame while having a bit of irony to it and later in the movie during the Mount Rageous chase they sing it again mixed with other songs Sweet Dreams and Fame while literaly sucking the life out of the trolls for talent .

    Also, can we talk about the lack of colour in the live-action Under the Sea? This is supposed to be set in the middle of a coral reef, which is supposed to be full of colour and activity, from the corals and anemones to the dozens of species of colourful fish. Where was all that? Instead, the coral in the live action looks dead and bleached. Which I wouldn't mind that if they ever brought it up in dialogue that the reefs are dying (they talk about the wrecks of ships cluttering the oceans but nothing else) yet they don't and it makes under the sea feel very plain and bland

    Ariel doesn't need to be illiterate to justify being unable to write out her story. If it needs to be justified, maybe it's forbidden by the small print of the contract. Maybe her kingdom doesn't use the Latin alphabet. Maybe she just doesn't think anyone will believe her.

    The movie wasn't great, nor was its soundtrack, but I really don't think anything in the song sounds "awkward" in terms of the rhythm or vocal performance. If anything, I appreciate that the rhythm of the vocals doesn't strictly adhere to the instrumentation. Makes it more interesting to me, at least. I must also mention, I generally don't like a lot of "musical" songs or songwriting. In context of the Wish movie, I agree that the lyrics and themes missed the mark.

    They should've taken bo burnham instead. He made four of my favorite songs : How the world works ; A dhmis-esque musical number about a teacher (society) and his sock puppet named socko (possibly bo burnham) teaching a crowd of disembodied unseen and unheard children. God's perspective ; A song from the perspective of god telling us that we should love eachother rather than pointlessly trying to earn the lord's love. Repeat stuff ; A pop song made by a demon straight from hell under the guise of a teen pop singer. Welcome to the internet ; Possibly the best villain song ever. It's about bo burnham praising the internet before taking us with him into his descent into madness as he showcases the horror of the internet like virgil leading dante through the nine circles. He can make such good songs and i'm sure he would'nt mind writting a few for disney, given enough money and time.
